Abstract

Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

Abstract

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment., Comment: Letter of Intent

Abstract

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Abstract

The SHiP experiment is designed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. An essential task for the experiment is to keep the Standard Model background level to less than 0.1 event after $2\times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the beam dump, around $10^{11}$ muons will be produced per second. The muon rate in the spectrometer has to be reduced by at least four orders of magnitude to avoid muon-induced combinatorial background. A novel active muon shield is used to magnetically deflect the muons out of the acceptance of the spectrometer. Abstract

We study LHC phenomenology of mirage mediation scenario in which anomaly and modulus contributions to soft SUSY breaking terms are comparable to each other. A Monte Carlo study of mirage mediation, with model parameters $\alpha=1$,$ M_0=500$ GeV, $n_M=1/2$, $n_H=1$ and $\rm{tan}\beta=10$, is presented. It is shown that masses of supersymmetric particles can be measured in a model independent way, providing information on SUSY breaking sector. In particular, the mass ratio of gluino to the lightest neutralino for the benchmark scenario is determined to be $1.9 \lesssim m_{\tildeg}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \lesssim 3.1$, well reproducing theoretical input value of $m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \simeq 2.5$ which is quite distinctive from the predictions $m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \gtrsim 6$ of other SUSY scenarios in which gaugino masses are unified at the GUT scale. The model parameters of mirage mediation can be also determined from various kinematic distributions.

Abstract

We study the phenomenology of neutralino dark matter (DM) in mirage mediation scenario of supersymmetry breaking which results from the moduli stabilization in some string/brane models. Depending upon the model parameters, especially the anomaly to modulus mediation ratio determined by the moduli stabilization mechanism, the nature of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) changes from Bino-like neutralino to Higgsino-like one via Bino-Higgsino mixing region. For the Bino-like LSP, the standard thermal production mechanism can give a right amount of relic DM density through the stop/stau-neutralino coannihilation or the pseudo-scalar Higgs resonance process. We also examine the prospect of direct and indirect DM detection in various parameter regions of mirage mediation. Neutralino DM in galactic halo might be detected by near future direct detection experiments in the case of Bino-Higgsino mixed LSP. Abstract

The lightest neutralino is a compelling candidate to account for cold dark matter in the universe in supersymmetric theories with $R$--parity. In the CP-invariant theory, the neutralino relic density can be found in accord with recent WMAP data if neutralino annihilation in the early universe occurs via the s-channel $A$ funnel. In contrast, in the CP-noninvariant theory two heavy neutral Higgs bosons can contribute to the Higgs funnel mechanism significantly due to a CP-violating {\it complex} mixing between two heavy states, in particular, when they are almost degenerate. With a simple analytic and numerical analysis, we demonstrate that the CP-violating Higgs mixing can modify the profile of the neutralino relic density {\it considerably} in the heavy Higgs funnel with the neutralino mass close to half of the heavy Higgs masses., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Results of a CCD study of the variability of the cataclysmic variable BG CMi obtained at the Korean 1.8m telescope in 2002-2005 are presented. The "multi-comparison star" method had been applied for better accuracy estimates. The linear ephemeris based on 19 mean maxima for 2002--2005 is HJD 2453105.31448(6)+0.01057257716(198)(E-764707). The period differs from that predicted by the quadratic ephemeris by Pych et al. (1996) leading to a possible cycle miscount. The statistically optimal ephemeris is a fourth-order polynomial, as a quadratic or even a cubic ephemeris leads to unaceptably large residuals: Min.HJD=$ 2445020.28095(28)+0.0105729609(57)E -1.58(32)\cdot10^{-13}E^2-5.81(64)\cdot10^{-19}E^3+4.92(41)\cdot10^{-25}E^4.$ Thus the rate of the spin-up of the white dwarf is decreasing. An alternative explanation is that the spin-up has been stopped during recent years. The deviations between the amplutudes of the spin variability in V and R, as well as between phases are not statistically significant. However, the orbital light curves exhibit distinct difference; the corresponding color index shows a nearly sinusoidal shape with a maximum at orbital phase $\sim0.2.$ The variations of the amplitude of spin waves shows a short maximum at the phase of the orbital dip. The corrected ephemeris for orbital minima is Min.HJD=$2448368.7225(12)+0\fd13474841(6)\cdot(E-24849)$ with a narrow dip occuring 0.07P later. Abstract

The direct detection of neutralino dark matter is analysed in general supergravity scenarios, where non-universal soft scalar and gaugino masses can be present. In particular, the theoretical predictions for the neutralino-nucleon cross section are studied and compared with the sensitivity of dark matter detectors. We take into account the most recent astrophysical and experimental constraints on the parameter space, including the current limit on B(Bs-> mu+ mu-). The latter puts severe limitations on the dark matter scattering cross section, ruling out most of the regions that would be within the reach of present experiments. We show how this constraint can be softened with the help of appropriate choices of non-universal parameters which increase the Higgsino composition of the lightest neutralino and minimise the chargino contribution to the b->s transition., Comment: 27 pages, 22 figures

Neutralinos $\tilde{\chi}^0$ in supersymmetric theories, the spin--1/2 Majorana--type superpartners of the U(1) and SU(2) neutral electroweak gauge bosons and SU(2) neutral Higgs bosons, are expected to be among light supersymmetric particles so that they can be produced copiouslyvia direct pair production and/or from cascade decays of other sparticles such as sleptons at the planned Large Hadron Collider and the prospective International Linear Collider. Abstract

In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the neutralinos, the spin--1/2 Majorana superpartners of the neutral gauge and Higgs bosons, are expected to be among the light supersymmetric particles that can be produced copiously at future high--energy colliders. We analyze two--body neutralino decays into a neutralino plus a $Z$ boson or a lightest neutral Higgs boson $h$, allowing the relevant parameters to have complex phases. We show that the two--body tree--level decays of neutralinos are kinematically allowed in a large region of the MSSM parameter space and they can provide us with a powerful probe of the Majorana nature and CP properties of the neutralinos through the $Z$--boson polarization measured from $Z$--boson leptonic decays., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, minor revision, to appear in Phys. Abstract

A model-independent analysis for the exclusive, rare B -> K^* l^+ l^- decay is presented. Systematically studied are the experimentally measured quantities, such as, branching ratio, forward-backward asymmetry, longitudinal polarization of the final leptons, and the ratio $\Gamma_L/\Gamma_T$ of the decay widths when $K^\ast$ meson is longitudinally and transversally polarized. The dependence of the asymmetry parameter $\alpha = 2 \Gamma_L/\Gamma_T -1$ on the new Wilson coefficients is also studied in detail. It is found that the afore-mentioned physical observables are quite sensitive to the new Wilson coefficients. Therefore, once we have the experimental data with high statistics and a deviation from the Standard Model, we can interpret the source of such discrepancy., Comment: To be published in PRD (2000)

Abstract

An economic crisis broke out in Asian region in 1997. Korea severely suffered from the economic crisis. This thesis examined the impact of the 1997 economic crisis on the Korean economy. The analysis focused on the impact of economic crisis on labour market, household economy, and social welfare. The analysis on labour market impact focused on both female labour force participation and male unemployment duration. The analysis on household economy impact focused on both household income and consumer behaviour. The analysis on social welfare impact focused on both inequality and social welfare. The analysis is an empirical research using econometric methods based on two micro level datasets: the 1998 Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) and the Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) of Korea from 1991 to 1999. The probit model, the cox proportional hazard model, the cohort analysis and its decomposition method, the nonparametric kernel regression method, the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QAIDS), the second order approximation of welfare measure, and the input- output methodology were employed to estimate the impact of economic crisis. Major findings are as follows. The predicted probability of female labour force participation decreased by 12.8 percent. The conditional probability of being employed decreased by 36.6 percent for male unemployed. Younger generation was more severely affected in the labour market. Household median income in 1998 decreased by 15.9 percent to that in 1994. Income of younger cohorts, households in Seoul, and wage earners group were more heavily affected. The Korean consumers increased food, fuel, and transport expenditure shares and decreased clothing and service shares in the face of economic hardship. Income inequality and poverty severely worsened. Inequality differences among age cohorts, regional, and occupational groups dramatically increased. The social welfare based on indirect utility level decreased by 11.3 percent at -1.5 inequality aversion parameter after the economic crisis.

Abstract

The SHiP experiment has been proposed at CERN to shed light on phenomena still unexplained in the framework of the Standard Model, such as the nature of dark matter, the baryonic asymmetry of the Universe and the neutrino oscillations, searching for hints of New Physics. A section of the detector will be dedicated to the study of neutrino physics with special emphasis on tau neutrino properties, still very poorly measured. A system to identify the muons produced in neutrino interactions, based on RPC technology, has been proposed and it is presented in detail in this paper.

Abstract

We report the direct observation of muon neutrino interactions with the SND@LHC detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A data set of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6\,$TeV collected by SND@LHC in 2022 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.8$\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The search is based on information from the active electronic components of the SND@LHC detector, which covers the pseudo-rapidity region of $7.2 < \eta < 8.4$, inaccessible to the other experiments at the collider. Muon neutrino candidates are identified through their charged-current interaction topology, with a track propagating through the entire length of the muon detector. After selection cuts, 8 $\nu_\mu$ interaction candidate events remain with an estimated background of 0.076 events, yielding a significance of seven standard deviations for the observed $\nu_\mu$ signal., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Abstract

The BDF/SHiP collaboration has proposed a general-purpose intensity-frontier experimental facility operating in beam-dump mode at the CERN SPS accelerator to search for feebly interacting GeV-scale particles and to perform measurements in neutrino physics. BDF/SHiP complements the world-wide program of New Physics searches by exploring a large region of parameter space which cannot be addressed by other experiments, and which reaches several orders of magnitude below existing bounds. The SHiP detector is sensitive both to decay and scattering signatures of models with heavy neutral leptons, dark photons, dark scalars, axion-like particles, light dark matter and other feebly interacting particles. In neutrino physics, BDF/SHiP can perform unprecedented measurements with tau neutrinos and neutrino-induced charm production. Following the Technical Proposal submitted in 2015, the subsequent three-year Comprehensive Design Study (CDS), and the recent study of BDF/SHiP in existing beam facilities around the SPS, this paper restates the motivation and reports on the implementation and physics performance of BDF/SHiP in the SPS ECN3 high-intensity beam facility.

Abstract

In July 2018 an optimization run for the proposed charm cross section measurement for SHiP was performed at the CERN SPS. A heavy, moving target instrumented with nuclear emulsion films followed by a silicon pixel tracker was installed in front of the Goliath magnet at the H4 proton beam-line. Behind the magnet, scintillating-fibre, drift-tube and RPC detectors were placed. The purpose of this run was to validate the measurement's feasibility, to develop the required analysis tools and fine-tune the detector layout. In this paper, we present the track reconstruction in the pixel tracker and the track matching with the moving emulsion detector. The pixel detector performed as expected and it is shown that, after proper alignment, a vertex matching rate of 87% is achieved.

Abstract

Global net anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the last decade (2010–2019) were higher than at any previous time in human history (high confidence). Since 2010, GHG emissions have continued to grow, reaching 59 ± 6.6 GtCO2-eq in 2019,1 but the average annual growth in the last decade (1.3%, 2010–2019) was lower than in the previous decade (2.1%, 2000–2009) (high confidence). Average annual GHG emissions were 56 ± 6.0 GtCO2-eq yr –1 for the decade 2010–2019 growing by about 9.1 GtCO2-eq yr –1 from the previous decade (2000–2009) – the highest decadal average on record (high confidence).
