Abstract

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is an indispensable tool for atomic-resolution structural analysis for a wide range of materials. The conventional analysis of STEM images is an extensive hands-on process, which limits efficient handling of high-throughput data. Here we apply a fully convolutional network (FCN) for identification of important structural features of two-dimensional crystals. ResUNet, a type of FCN, is utilized in identifying sulfur vacancies and polymorph types of ${MoS_2}$ from atomic resolution STEM images. Efficient models are achieved based on training with simulated images in the presence of different levels of noise, aberrations, and carbon contamination. The accuracy of the FCN models toward extensive experimental STEM images is comparable to that of careful hands-on analysis. Our work provides a guideline on best practices to train a deep learning model for STEM image analysis and demonstrates FCN's application for efficient processing of a large volume of STEM data., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Controlling coherent light–matter interactions in semiconductor microcavities is at the heart of the next-generation solid-state polaritonic devices. Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites are potential materials for room-temperature polaritonics owing to their high exciton oscillator strengths and large exciton binding energies. Herein, we report on strong exciton-photon coupling in the micro-platelet and micro-ribbon shaped methylammonium lead bromide single crystals. Owing to high crystallinity and large refractive index, the as-grown perovskite microcrystals serve as self-hybridized optical microcavities along different orientations due to their distinct physical dimensionalities. In this regard, the perovskite micro-platelet forms a simple Fabry–Perot microcavity in out-of-plane orientation, while the micro-ribbon functions as a Fabry–Perot type waveguide microcavity within the plane of the perovskite sample. Consequently, excitons in these microcavities strongly interact with their corresponding uncoupled cavity modes, yielding multimode exciton-polaritons with Rabi splitting energies ∼205 and 235 meV for micro-platelet and micro-ribbon geometry, respectively. Furthermore, micro-ribbon geometry displays Young’s double-slit-like interference patterns, which together with the numerical simulation readily reveals the parity and the mode order of the uncoupled cavity modes. Thus, our results not only shed light on strong exciton-photon coupling in various morphologies of methylammonium lead bromide microcrystals but also open an avenue for advanced polaritonic devices.

12. Large-Scale Conformal Growth of Atomic-Thick MoS2 for Highly Efficient Photocurrent Generation

Abstract

Controlling the interconnection of neighboring seeds (nanoflakes) to full coverage of the textured substrate is the main challenge for the large-scale conformal growth of atomic-thick transition metal dichalcogenides by chemical vapor deposition. Herein, we report on a controllable method for the conformal growth of monolayer MoS2 on not only planar but also micro- and nano-rugged SiO2/Si substrates via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The continuity of monolayer MoS2 on the rugged surface is evidenced by scanning electron microscopy, cross-section high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL) mapping, and Raman mapping. Interestingly, the photo-responsivity (~254.5 mA/W) of as-grown MoS2 on the nano-rugged substrate exhibits 59 times higher than that of the planar sample (4.3 mA/W) under a small applied bias of 0.1 V. This value is record high when compared with all previous MoS2-based photocurrent generation under low or zero bias. Such a large enhancement in the photo-responsivity arises from a large active area for light-matter interaction and local strain for PL quenching, where the latter effect is the key factor and unique in the conformally grown monolayer on the nano-rugged surface. Abstract

Background and purpose: The immune response following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) can exacerbate secondary brain injury and impact clinical outcomes. As the immune response after aSAH is a dynamic process, we aim to track and characterize immune cell trajectories over time to identify patterns associated with various clinical outcomes. Methods: In this retrospective single-center study of patients with aSAH, we analyzed immune cell count trajectories, including neutrophil, monocyte, and lymphocyte counts, collected from day 1 to day 14. These trajectories were classified into four distinct clusters utilizing the k-means longitudinal clustering method. A comprehensive multivariable analysis was performed to explore the associations of these immune cell clusters with various clinical outcomes. These outcomes included a Modified Rankin Scale score (mRS) of 3 to 6, indicative of poor functional outcomes, along with complications including shunt dependency, vasospasm, and secondary cerebral infarction. Results: In this study, 304 patients with aSAH were analyzed. The trajectories of immune cell counts, including neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes, were successfully categorized into four distinct clusters for each immune cell type. Within neutrophil clusters, both persistent neutrophilia and progressive neutrophilia were associated with poor functional outcomes, shunt dependency, and vasospasm, with resolving neutrophilia showing a lesser degree of these associations. Within monocyte clusters, early monocytosis was associated with vasospasm, whereas delayed monocytosis was associated with shunt dependency. Within lymphocyte clusters, both early transient lymphopenia and early prolonged lymphopenia were associated with poor functional outcomes. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that distinct immune cell trajectories post-aSAH, identified through unsupervised clustering, are significantly associated with specific clinical outcomes. Abstract

Dynamic second-order nonlinear susceptibilities, $\chi^{(2)}(2\omega,\omega,\omega)\equiv \chi^{(2)}(\omega)$, are calculated here within a fully first-principles scheme for monolayered molybdenum dichalcogenides, $2H$-MoX$_2$ (X=S,Se,Te). The absolute values of $\chi^{(2)}(\omega)$ across the three chalcogens critically depend on the band gap energies upon uniform strain, yielding the highest $\chi^{(2)}(0)\sim$ 140 pm/V for MoTe$_2$ in the static limit. Under this uniform in-plane stress, $2H$-MoX$_2$ can undergo direct-to-indirect transition of band gaps, which in turn substantially affects $\chi^{(2)}(\omega)$. The tunability of $\chi^{(2)}(\omega)$ by either compressive or tensile strain is demonstrated especially for two important experimental wavelengths, 1064 nm and 800 nm, where resonantly enhanced non-linear effects can be exploited: $\chi^{(2)}$ of MoSe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$ approach $\sim$800 pm/V with -2\% strain at 1064 nm., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures,submitted to Phys. Abstract

Morphology plays a crucial role in defining the optical, electronic, and mechanical properties of halide perovskite microcrystals. Therefore, developing strategies that offer precise control over crystal morphology during the growth process is highly desirable. This work presents a simple scheme to simultaneously grow distinct geometries of cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) microcrystals, including microrods (MR), microplates (MP), and microspheres (MS), in a single chemical vapor deposition (CVD) experiment. By strategically adjusting precursor evaporation temperatures, flux density, and the substrate temperature, we surpass previous techniques by achieving simultaneous yet selective growth of multiple CsPbBr3 geometries at distinct positions on the same substrate. This fine growth control is attributed to the synergistic variation in fluid flow dynamics, precursor substrate distance, and temperature across the substrate, offering regions suitable for the growth of different morphologies. Pertinently, perovskite MR are grown at the top, while MP and MS are observed at the center and bottom regions of the substrate, respectively. Structural analysis reveals high crystallinity and an orthorhombic phase of the as-grown perovskite microcrystals, while persistent photonic lasing manifests their nonlinear optical characteristics, underpinning their potential application for next-generation photonic and optoelectronic devices.
