9. Access Control Framework for Cross-Platform Interoperability in the Industrial Internet of Things

Abstract

The rapid advancement of the industrial Internet of things (IIoTs) has facilitated the development of diverse platforms and management technologies. However, the lack of standardized protocols and interoperability between platforms developed by various organizations hinders seamless integration. These limitations represent the primary challenge in access control between different IIoT platforms, resulting in limited service utilization across heterogeneous platforms. This study addresses the challenges of effectively sharing user attributes and representations for access control between heterogeneous IIoT platforms using blockchain and a metadata registry (MDR). Utilizing blockchain ensures tamper-proof and transparent attribute sharing, whereas the MDR facilitates the accurate mapping of user attributes for cross-platform resource access control. We demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed framework by successfully implementing access control between two representative standard platforms, namely oneM2M and FIWARE. Our results indicate that enhancing service utilization through access control between heterogeneous IIoT platforms can improve security and efficiency across various industries.

38. Hypothesis Generation Model for Cyber Threat Hunting

Abstract

Cyber attackers are rapidly developing their attack tactics and techniques, and their threats already pose a great danger to the world. Using cyber threat intelligence, security analysts make attack reconstruction possible, and human analysts are mainly responsible for the analysis of security system alerts. A cyber threat hunting hypothesis typically addresses the type of threat being hunted and how it is discovered. In this study, we propose a five-step hypothesis generation model for cyber threat hunting. The proposed model leverages proactive indicators of attack (IOAs) and information technology (IT) asset information related to network security, and correlates them with indicators of compromise (IOCs), defines the structure of hypothesis, and presents the attack domains-based hypothesis generation method for the formation of complicated hypotheses. In addition, it provides an approach to prioritizing the hypotheses.

39. A Nash equilibrium based decision-making method for internet of things

Abstract

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained global popularity. IoT can connect several objects and create a dynamic environment; thus, an IoT system must adapt to environmental changes. To adapt to a dynamic environment, an effective decision-making method is required for an IoT system. Game theory is a mathematical method for decision-making among decision makers, and it may be applied to decision-making for an IoT system. In addition, the concept of self-adaptive software may be applied to IoT because such software evaluates and changes its behavior to satisfy its intended use, and the IoT system then makes decisions and adapts to its dynamic environment. In this study, a decision-making method is proposed along with game theoretic decision-making and self-adaptive loop mechanisms for IoT. The proposed method is based on MAPE-K loops, which are general processes used in self-adaptive software with shared knowledge. In addition, Nash equilibrium is applied to extract candidate strategies, which are evaluated for selecting the most optimal solution. The proposed method was implemented as a prototype, and experiments were conducted to evaluate its runtime performance. The results show that the proposed method can be applied to an IoT environment at runtime.

40. Security and Privacy Requirements for the Metaverse: A Metaverse Applications Perspective

Abstract

The metaverse overcomes the time and space constraints of the real world and expands the physical world based on the Internet of Things, virtual reality, and digital twins. For this reason, interest in metaverse applications has recently increased because they can provide immersion and varied experiences similar to those in the real world. However, some security and privacy incidents are being encountered by these applications. Furthermore, users in the metaverse are concerned about personal data breaches, but metaverse studies on security and privacy are lacking. Thus, this study aims to propose security and privacy requirements for secure metaverse applications. To achieve this aim, we first analyze the existing metaverse-related studies and international standards from the perspective of security and privacy. We then present the security and privacy threats to the metaverse, which are identified by considering the characteristics of the applications. Finally, we propose security and privacy requirements and countermeasures to minimize these threats.
