Abstract Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common entity of Cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCL) and is characterized by the presence of clonal malignant T cells in the skin. The role of the skin microbiome for MF development and progression are currently poorly understood. Using shotgun metagenomic profiling, real-time qPCR, and T cell receptor sequencing, we compared lesional and nonlesional skin of 20 MF patients with early and advanced MF. Additionally, we isolated Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria from MF skin for functional profiling and to study the S. aureus virulence factor spa. We identified a subgroup of MF patients with substantial dysbiosis on MF lesions and concomitant outgrowth of S. aureus on plaque-staged lesions, while the other MF patients had a balanced microbiome on lesional skin. Dysbiosis and S. aureus outgrowth were accompanied by ectopic levels of cutaneous antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), including adaptation of the plaque-derived S. aureus strain. Furthermore, the plaque-derived S. aureus strain showed a reduced susceptibility towards antibiotics and an upregulation of the virulence factor spa, which may activate the NF-κB pathway. Remarkably, patients with dysbiosis on MF lesions had a restricted T cell receptor repertoire and significantly lower event-free survival. Our study highlights the potential for microbiome-modulating treatments targeting S. aureus to prevent MF progression.

This study examined the trends in English language education (ELE) using a literature review from the 1960s to the 2020s as a research method. After reading the 1012 journal article abstracts, 210 articles emerged using the 37 keywords, which were supposed to embrace racial and linguistic equity. After multiple iterations of reading and open coding these abstracts, thirty-two articles were selected for the final analysis. One research question guided this study, “What were the emerging trends of PK-12 ELE in the USA in terms of equity and excellence from the 1960s to the 2020s?” Three phases were identified: Phase 1 (1968-1999) on remedial service; Phase 2 (2000-2007) on test accountability; and Phase 3 (2008-2020) on asset-based ELE. We integrated Feiman-Nemser’s central tasks into the four themes: 1) gaining EBLs' funds of knowledge (FoK), 2) enacting EBLs' racial, linguistic, and cultural repertoires, 3) forming teacher beliefs, and 4) deepening knowledge of the curriculum. The findings revealed shifts in three phases under each theme: from assimilating to the target language and culture and devaluing EBLs' assets in Phase 1 to interweaving EBLs’ FoK but with racialized attitude towards EBLs in Phase 2 and valuing EBLs’ FoK as assets, seeing them as ‘language architect’, and integrating translanguaging and resisting raciolinguistic ideologies into ELE in Phase 3.

Abstract This retrospective study applied machine-learning models to predict treatment outcomes of women undergoing elective fertility preservation. Two-hundred-fifty women who underwent elective fertility preservation at a tertiary center, 2019–2022 were included. Primary outcome was the number of metaphase II oocytes retrieved. Outcome class was based on oocyte count (OC): Low (≤ 8), Medium (9–15) or High (≥ 16). Machine-learning models and statistical regression were used to predict outcome class, first based on pre-treatment parameters, and then using post-treatment data from ovulation-triggering day. OC was 136 Low, 80 Medium, and 34 High. Random Forest Classifier (RFC) was the most accurate model (pre-treatment receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) was 77%, and post-treatment ROC AUC was 87%), followed by XGBoost Classifier (pre-treatment ROC AUC 74%, post-treatment ROC AUC 86%). The most important pre-treatment parameters for RFC were basal FSH (22.6%), basal LH (19.1%), AFC (18.2%), and basal estradiol (15.6%). Post-treatment parameters were estradiol levels on trigger-day (17.7%), basal FSH (11%), basal LH (9%), and AFC (8%). Machine-learning models trained with clinical data appear to predict fertility preservation treatment outcomes with relatively high accuracy.

Silicon (Si) offers cost-effective production and convenient on-chip integration for photodetection due to its well-established CMOS technology. However, the indirect bandgap of Si inherently limits its detection efficiency in the near-infrared (NIR) regime. Here, we propose a strategy to achieve high NIR photoresponse in Si by introducing a strong light-absorbing ultrathin gold (Au) film to generate hot carriers. Using a 4.6 nm thick-Au film deposited on Si, we achieved photoresponsivity of 1.6 mA/W at 1310 nm under zero-bias conditions, and rapid temporal responses of 7.5 and 8 μs for rise and fall times, respectively, comparable to germanium (Ge) photodiodes. By utilizing an ultrathin (100 nm) Au film as electrodes, we introduce a unique approach to design a photodiode array based on a single metal (Au) platform. Comparative analysis with a commercial beam profiler image validates the performance of our designed array. This work presents an efficient strategy for manufacturing cost-effective and scalable NIR photodetector arrays, which eliminates the need for additional insulator layers.

Abstract This study presents a meticulous examination of the solar energy potential of five selected metropolitan cities (Abakaliki, Awka, Enugu, Owerri, and Umuahia) in Eastern part of Nigeria using deep learning algorithm, specifically the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. These cities, despite being characterized by extended rainy seasons and a high level of cloudiness, are suitable environment for solar power generation and investment opportunities. The employed methodology capitalized on the LSTM deep learning approach to analyze and predict energy generation, utilizing comprehensive hourly weather data from the National Airspace Agency (NASA). The data set comprised various parameters, such as date/time, solar azimuth angle, temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, cloud cover, and power, enabling a thorough analysis of each city. To ensure accuracy, energy prediction capabilities were benchmarked against real-time datasets from a solar power plant in Ulsan, South Korea, thereby training and fine-tuning the model for precision. The LSTM model's performance metrics were maintained at a learning rate of 0.07, a batch size of 150, and a train-test split ratio of 0.8 to 0.2. Data validation exhibited a mean square error (MSE) of 0.01, demonstrating the model’s reliability. Results showed Enugu as having the highest solar energy potential, averaging 6.25 kWh/day, while Awka registered the most substantial electricity demand across various sectors. These findings highlight the substantial potential for photovoltaic (PV) power systems and advocate for the immediate implementation of renewable energy policy in the selected cities. These are expected to bring about significant implications for future renewable energy environmentally friendly investments in Nigeria and globally.

In this paper, which is largely personal and retrospective, the author shares his memories of his encounters with the works of Yuri Lotman and takes the opportunity for a reconside­ration of his semiotics as a specific reflection on the history of Russia. Beginning with me­mories of the first encounter with Lotman's work more than thirty years ago in Korea, the author describes his experiences studying Lotman in Russia under the supervision of Pro­fessor Boris Fedorovich Egorov and, after returning to his native country, intensively explor­ing Lotman's last years (the so-called ‘Lotmanian explosion’). In particular, the author at­tempts to reconceptualize the intriguing concept of the ‘mechanism of Smuta’ that Lotman developed in his later years in terms of the "unpredictability of the past" and to highlight its profound implications for Lotman, who, the author argues, should be seen not only as a theo­rist but also as a (Russian) thinker.

CMOS image sensor (CIS) plays a crucial role in diverse optical applications by facilitating the capture of images in the visible and near-infrared spectra. The enhancement of image resolution in CIS by an increase in pixel density is becoming more significant and realizable with the recent progress of nanofabrication. However, as pixel size decreases towards the diffraction limit, there is an inevitable trade-off between the scale-down of pixel size and the enhancement of optical sensitivity. Recently, to overcome this, an entirely new concept of spectral sensing using a nanophotonic-based color router has been proposed. In this work, we present a metasurface-based spectral router to effectively split the spectrum from visible to near-infrared and redirect through the four optical channels to the targeted pixel surfaces. We optimize the metasurface that simultaneously controls the phases of the transmitted light of targeted spectra, i.e. red (R), green (G), blue (B), and near-infrared (NIR), which is the largest number of channels reported based on a single layered metasurface and has an optical efficiency that surpasses the efficiency of conventional color filter systems.

Soft skills are critical for undergraduate students to succeed in the workplace, but there exists a gap between the skills possessed by undergraduate students and those required by the industry. This review explores the use of game-based learning (GBL) for developing soft skills among undergraduate students. The review aims to answer four research questions that cover essential aspects of GBL, such as its theoretical foundation, skill development, game design elements, and assessment methods. Following the Preferred Reporting for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we selected 24 journal articles with empirical results from Scopus databases spanning 2017 to 2023, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria to finalize 18 articles for review. The review identified potential challenges in using GBL for soft skills development, such as the exploration of least developed soft skills, effectiveness of theoretical foundation adoption, game design elements development, and validation of assessment methods. This study aims to provide recommendations for game designers and educators to enhance GBL for soft skills development. The study proposes integrating established learning theories with emerging technologies and social media to provide a personalised learning experience, exploring generative AI in soft skills games, designing open-ended or sandbox game environments to develop innovation skills, incorporating in-game assessment features to assess self-management skills, aligning game rewards with learning objectives, encouraging peer-to-peer assessment, and collaborating with psychometricians to align captured data with the intended soft skills assessment. The study also highlights limitations and suggests future studies to address them, such as adopting emerging technologies to address limitations. Overall, the study contributes to the understanding of GBL for soft skills development and provides valuable insights and recommendations for future research and practice in this domain.

Real-time information on water supply and quality is a crucial asset for planning and managing water resources, infrastructure, and scientific research for sustainable development. In this direction, the innovative concept of smart water infrastructure is progressing. The present paper reports a case study on the demonstration of a `smart graded-water supply grid' on the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, India. The paper describes the transformation of ∼13 km long water distribution network that supplies drinking water to ∼5,000 inhabitants into smart supply grid by deploying sensors and establishing an IoT-enabled real-time monitoring platform. The data sets of water flow and pressure collected from sensor nodes are analyzed to understand the characteristic diurnal water usage profiles unique to student hostels on the campus. The data show a distinctive consumption profile of student hostels over the weekdays with a maximum peak consumption of 16.38 m3/h. Monitoring of vital quality parameters such as chlorine, pH, and temperature demonstrate acceptable levels thereby ensuring compliance with safety standards. The purpose of the paper is to provide insights from a real-world case and close the knowledge gap between general awareness and the potential of smart water grid in sustainable management of graded-water services. HIGHLIGHTS An institutional case study of the smart graded-water supply grid in India is presented.; Deployment of sensor nodes and IoT architecture for remote monitoring is reported.; Real-time monitoring of pressure, flow, and quality in the water supply grid is demonstrated.; Temporal variations in water hydraulics and quality are presented and discussed.;

Integration of information across heterogeneous sources creates added scientific value. Interoperability of data, tools and models is, however, difficult to accomplish across spatial and temporal scales. Here we introduce the toolbox Parallel Co-Simulation, which enables the interoperation of simulators operating at different scales. We provide a software science co-design pattern and illustrate its functioning along a neuroscience example, in which individual regions of interest are simulated on the cellular level allowing us to study detailed mechanisms, while the remaining network is efficiently simulated on the population level. A workflow is illustrated for the use case of The Virtual Brain and NEST, in which the CA1 region of the cellular-level hippocampus of the mouse is embedded into a full brain network involving micro and macro electrode recordings. This new tool allows integrating knowledge across scales in the same simulation framework and validating them against multiscale experiments, thereby largely widening the explanatory power of computational models.

Abstract Mouse models are useful for the early down-selection of malaria vaccine candidates. The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research has optimized a transgenic Plasmodium berghei sporozoite challenge model to compare the efficacy of Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (CSP) vaccines. GSK’s RTS,S vaccine formulated in the adjuvant AS01 can protect malaria-naïve individuals against malaria. We report that the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine induces high level sterile protection in our mouse model. Down titration of the antigen at a constant AS01 dose revealed a potent antigen dose-sparing effect and the superiority of RTS,S/AS01 over a soluble CSP antigen. RTS,S-mediated protective immunity was associated with a threshold of major repeat antibody titer. Combined titration of the antigen and adjuvant showed that reducing the adjuvant could improve antibody boosting post-3rd vaccination and reduce the threshold antibody concentration required for protection. Mouse models can provide a pathway for preclinical assessment of strategies to improve CSP vaccines against malaria.

Abstract The foods, diets, lifestyles, and cultures that can be encountered throughout the world are different depending on the environment of each region and each ethnic group. Ethnic food has been developed according to the constraints of the given environment in terms of philosophical, agricultural, and geohistorical conditions. In other words, ethnic food is a product of efforts to cope with and overcome food safety, desirability, and the need for food storage for periods of famine. It would be a tradition and emergence created by accumulated wisdom that actively utilizes the given geographical and natural environment. Since the Ice Age, the development of all ethnic foods on the Earth has been unique in terms of their characteristics, due to the natural agro-ecological background of the region, through the movement and settlement of primitive mankind and wars of the Bronze Age. Therefore, it is impossible to understand the development of a particular ethnic food without understanding its historical background and geographical and agro-ecological characteristics. The same applies to Korean foods, which should be studied from this perspective. Nevertheless, until now, the history of food on the Korean Peninsula has been mainly studied by history scholars who can read Chinese characters rather than by natural scientists, resulting in errors and distortions in our understanding of the identity, history, and originality of Korean food. In this paper, we aim to correct these errors and distortions and to present scientifically validated research and the developmental background of Korean food in terms of its anthropological, historical, geographical, and cultural values, which is essential for K-food (Korean Traditional foods) to be known as a distinctly different world food rather than as a regional variant of Northeast Asian foods. Furthermore, we also aim to provide scientific truths by researching the health functionalities and cultural values of Korean food so that it can develop as a global food worldwide.

Plasmonic optical nanolithography using extraordinary optical transmission through a metallic nanohole mask has been actively applied to the high-resolution fabrication of nanostructures over a large area. Although there have been studies on improving the nanostructure fabrication performance in optical nanolithography, such as on adjustable external gap spacing, additional performance enhancement is required for practical applications and commercialization of large-area and high-resolution nanostructure array fabrication techniques. In this study, we design and apply a plasmonic bull’s eye nanostructured meta-mask to enhance the performance of optical nanolithography. Through simulation results and experimental verification, it is confirmed that advanced optical nanolithography using the bull’s eye nanostructured meta-mask has several merits compared to conventional Talbot lithography using nanoholes: (1) Optical nanolithography using the bull’s eye nanostructured meta-mask effectively fabricates nanopillar arrays even at a shorter exposure time than conventional optical lithography using nanoholes. (2) It is possible to create a large-area nanopillar array with various nanopillar diameters by exposure time control in optical nanolithography using the bull’s eye meta-mask. (3) Using water or objective immersion oil to increase the refractive index of the contact medium, light can be focused on smaller sizes, and large-area nanopillar arrays with smaller nanopillar diameters are established. With the upgradation of hardware for large-area fabrication, application of immersion media supplying techniques, and additional studies to establish complex nanostructures, optical nanolithography using the bull’s eye nanostructured meta-mask is an efficient modality to produce various nanostructure-based devices.

Abstract Purpose To measure the proportion of unexplained and all causes of visual loss following primary rhegmatogenous-retinal-detachment (RRD) repair, comparing gas tamponade (SF6, C2F6, C3F8), silicone oil (SO, 1000cs and 5000cs) and heavy silicone oil (Densiron). Methods Retrospective, continuous, comparative study from 01/1/2017-31/5/2021. All primary RRDs were included after successful removal of SO and Densiron. Primary failures were excluded. Visual loss was defined as reduction of ≥0.30 logMAR units. Multivariable binary-logistic and linear regression models to compare tamponade, and all cases of unexplained visual loss and logMAR gain were performed. Covariates included age, ocular co-morbidities, pre-op vision, macula-status, high-myopia, giant-retinal-tear (GRT), perfluorocarbon-use, combined buckle/PPV, PVR-C, retinectomy, tamponade agent and post-operative lens status. Results Of 1,012 primary RRDs, we found an incidence of unexplained visual loss in 15/1012 (1.5%, SF6:1/341[0.3%], C2F6:4/338[1.2%], C3F8:2/239[0.8%], Densiron:0/33[0.0%], SO-1000cs:5/43[11.6%] and SO-5000cs:3/18[16.7%]), and visual loss of all causes in 57/1012 (5.6%, SF6:13/341[3.8%], C2F6:14/338[4.1%], C3F8:15/239[6.3%], Densiron:2/33[6.1%], SO-1000cs:9/43[20.9%] and SO-5000cs:4/18[22.2%]). On multivariable binary-logistic regression, we report that macula-on RRD (Odds-Ratio[OR]5.7,95% Confidence-interval[CI]1.2-28.2, p=0.032), GRT (OR35.0,CI 2.0-617.3, p=0.015), combined buckle/PPV (OR37.7,CI 2.0-711.4, p=0.015), SO1000cs (OR86.6,CI 5.6-1,348.0), p=0.001) and 5000cs (OR37.2,CI 1.3-1,101.5, p=0.036) (Reference-tamponade:SF6) were associated with unexplained visual loss. Duration of oil tamponade was not linked to increase in unexplained visual loss (p=0.569). Conclusions Correlation between SO in detachment repairs and unexplained visual loss has been established, however incidence with HSO has not been compared to other agents. This study demonstrates that although SO was linked with risk-adjusted increased unexplained visual loss relative to gas tamponade, no such association was found for Densiron, on multivariable analysis.

The Banff Digital Pathology Working Group (DPWG) was established with the goal to establish a digital pathology repository; develop, validate, and share models for image analysis; and foster collaborations using regular videoconferencing. During the calls, a variety of artificial intelligence (AI)-based support systems for transplantation pathology were presented. Potential collaborations in a competition/trial on AI applied to kidney transplant specimens, including the DIAGGRAFT challenge (staining of biopsies at multiple institutions, pathologists’ visual assessment, and development and validation of new and pre-existing Banff scoring algorithms), were also discussed. To determine the next steps, a survey was conducted, primarily focusing on the feasibility of establishing a digital pathology repository and identifying potential hosts. Sixteen of the 35 respondents (46%) had access to a server hosting a digital pathology repository, with 2 respondents that could serve as a potential host at no cost to the DPWG. The 16 digital pathology repositories collected specimens from various organs, with the largest constituent being kidney (n = 12,870 specimens). A DPWG pilot digital pathology repository was established, and there are plans for a competition/trial with the DIAGGRAFT project. Utilizing existing resources and previously established models, the Banff DPWG is establishing new resources for the Banff community.

The Qianmen Area in Beijing is an important symbol of the ancient capital’s style, and the colors of its commercial buildings are a crucial component of the city’s overall appearance. This article traces the historical evolution, renovation, and restoration of the Qianmen Area, and analyzes the colors of its commercial buildings through practical research. It organizes the architectural colorscape, studies the influencing factors of building colors, and applies the international color standard system, Munsell, to analyze color patterns. The aim is to provide a reference for research on traditional architectural colors in Beijing.

COVID-19 is an unprecedented pandemic that has impacted the whole world. The pandemic made researchers and educators realize the critical need to prepare for future disasters. This study explored a context-specific case for elementary online learning where we investigated how elementary school teachers transitioned to emergency remote teaching (ERT) from face-to-face to online learning during the pandemic. A case study approach was used to explore South Korean elementary teachers' ERT approaches and experiences during COVID-19. Using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, and Product) framework, we sought to understand how the transition occurred from the perspectives of the teachers. The analysis uncovered several themes that fall under each category of the framework. In terms of context, limited technological aptitude and lack of training in online instructional design as well as policy issues and socio-economic differences were identified as key factors in assessing the current state of the ERT. In terms of input, instructors' efforts as well as support from in and out of school were discussed. Student interaction and engagement were identified as key factors in understanding the process of ERT. Lastly, learning outcomes, instructional strategies, and systemic transformation emerged as products of ERT.

Purpose: Educational technology ("EdTech") served a pivotal role in keeping schools functioning during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Little is known about EdTech leaders' roles in shaping this response. This study explores EdTech leaders' perspectives and backgrounds, their response to the pandemic, how they envision their roles as educators, and their perspectives about how technology facilitates educational innovation. Design/Approach/Methods: This study uses a qualitative, phenomenological approach to understand how 11 EdTech leaders experienced the pandemic. Participants were recruited for interviews in summer 2021 via purposive sampling to include diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Data were analyzed inductively. Findings: The findings show that a four-category typology can be used to describe EdTech leaders' diverse backgrounds and experiences. Leaders emphasized equity and open collaboration in their pandemic responses, by expanding access to their tools and adapting their products as users' needs evolved. EdTech leaders anticipate streamlined user experiences, improvements in online learning, and increased adoption of artificial intelligence and simulated learning environments. Originality/Value: This study addresses a gap in the research concerning EdTech leaders' perspectives on their efforts to support educators and their experiences during the pandemic. We hope this study sparks additional research on EdTech leaders' experiences and roles in education.

Within the field of K-2 computer science (CS) education, unplugged computational thinking (CT) activities have been suggested as beneficial for younger students and shown to impact young students' skills and motivation to learn about CS. This study sought to examine how children demonstrate CT competencies in unplugged sequencing tasks and how children use manipulatives to solve unplugged sequencing tasks. This case study approach examined two unplugged sequencing tasks for six children ranging from ages five to eight (pre-kindergarten to 2nd grade). Children showed evidence of several CT competencies during the sequencing tasks: (1) pattern recognition, (2) algorithms and procedures, (3) problem decomposition, and (4) debugging. The strategies and use of manipulatives to showcase CT competencies seemed to evolve in complexity based on age and developmental levels. Taking into account children's abilities to demonstrate CT competencies, this study suggests that sequencing is a developmentally appropriate entry point for young children to begin engaging in other CT competencies. In addition, these unplugged sequencing tasks can also be easily integrated into other activities commonly experienced in early childhood classrooms.

This study addresses the scarcity of research examining technology's impact on learners of English as a foreign language in English for specific purposes (ESP) courses within English-medium instruction (EMI) programs. Focusing on a business communication course using a social question-answering platform, this study explores the interplay among English proficiency, motivational orientations, and online engagement. Surveying 126 university students via a mixed-method approach, this research identifies distinct motivational orientations (intrinsic, extrinsic, and self-efficacy) existing during class activities, influenced by proficiency levels, with notable differences in online participation between beginner and advanced learners. The findings suggest that while online activities enhance peer interaction and teacher feedback, they may trigger anxiety in beginners, potentially diminishing motivation and self-efficacy. These results emphasize the need to tailor technology integration to proficiency levels and motivational orientations in ESP/EMI settings. Practical recommendations are offered for educators aiming to implement effective online activities and provide targeted support, particularly for beginner learners, thereby bolstering their motivation and self-efficacy.

Despite increased research interest in improving students' scientific inquiry abilities, how to conduct scientific inquiry using science textbooks that are easily accessible to primary school students remains understudied. This study developed and verified an inquiry activity model (IAM) to improve the performance of primary school students in science textbook inquiry activities. Data were collected from sixth-grade primary students (n = 167) to analyze the difficulty level of textbook inquiry activities. An analysis tool was developed, focusing on inquiry skills and process flow. Expert analysis increased the tool's validity. The analysis revealed that students possessed low integrated inquiry skills, were partially aware of the inquiry process flow, and could not design experiments. Hence, the IAM was developed to enhance students' ability to perform textbook inquiry activities and understand the activity phases. It emphasized the flow and representation of the inquiry process for students to easily recall the contents as they learn the interconnectivity between phases. The post-test of the experimental group and the inquiry process flow chart showed significant improvement in all areas of inquiry ability. The scores for "connections" and "interconnectivity" in the inquiry process flow were high, reflecting the model's effectiveness in showing the interconnectedness of all stages.

Abstract Purpose To measure the visual outcomes, proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and retinectomy rates following primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair, comparing silicone oil (SO) and heavy SO (Densiron). Methods Retrospective, continuous comparative study from January 2017 to May 2021 of all primary RRD. Multivariable linear (logMAR gain) and binary-logistic (PVR-C and retinectomy rate) regression models to compare tamponade were performed. Covariates included age, gender, ocular co-morbidities, high myopia, macula-status, giant-retinal-tear (GRT), pre-op vision, PVR-C, oil type, perfluorocarbon-use, combined scleral buckle/vitrectomy, combined phaco-vitrectomy, 360-degrees-endolaser and oil duration. Cases with trauma or less than six-month follow-up were excluded. Results A total of 259 primary RD were analysed. There were 179 SO patients and 80 Densiron patients that had six-month primary re-detachment in 18 (10.1%) and 8 (10.0%) respectively (p = 1.000). No difference in logMAR gain was detected between tamponade choice on multivariable linear regression. Subsequent glaucoma surgery was 5 (2.8%) and 4 (5.0%) for SO and Densiron patients respectively (p = 0.464). On multivariate binary-logistic regression we found no difference in development of PVR-C between oil tamponades. However, SO had significantly higher subsequent retinectomy rate compared to Densiron (odds ratio 15.3, 95% CI 1.9–125.5, p = 0.011). Duration of oil tamponade was not linked to differences in logMAR gain, PVR-C formation or increased retinectomy rate. Conclusions We report no difference in primary anatomical success, number of further RRD surgeries, subsequent glaucoma surgery, visual outcomes, PVR-C between both tamponades on multivariable models. Densiron oil was found to be more retinectomy sparing relative to SO.

Ethics review processes are frequently perceived as extending from codes and protocols rooted in biomedical disciplines. As a result, many researchers in the humanities and social sciences (HASS) find these processes to be misaligned, if not outrightly obstructive to their research. This leads some scholars to advocate against HASS participation in institutional review processes as they currently stand, or in their entirety. While ethics review processes can present a challenge to HASS researchers, these are not insurmountable and, in fact, present opportunities for ethics review boards (ERBs) to mediate their practices to better attend to the concerns of the HASS disciplines. By highlighting the potential value of the ethics review process in recognising the nuances and specificity across different forms of research, this article explores the generative possibilities of greater collaboration between HASS researchers and ERBs. Remaining cognisant of the epistemic and methodological differences that mark different disciplinary formations in turn will benefit the ethical conduct of all researchers.

The ability of modulating optical properties at a lateral subwavelength scale is of crucial importance due to its potential applications for wide-angle holographic displays, optical communications, and interferometric sensors. Here, we present an electrically tunable metasurface whose optical properties can be element-wise controlled at the lateral subwavelength scale in the mid-infrared wavelength regime. Our proposed device facilitates an n-doped InAs layer as a dynamic-tunable layer, and the charge carrier concentration inside the InAs layer is tailored by external gate biases. This InAs active layer is sandwiched between top aluminum strip antennas and a bottom gold substrate, forming the metal–insulator–metal configuration. The change of the charge carrier concentration gives rise to modulation of the amplitude and phase of reflected light in a mid-infrared regime. Numerical investigations show the reflectivity contrast of 44%P with biases of −2.5–0 V and the phase change of 236° with biases of −15 V to +15 V at the wavelength of ∼5 μm. Versatile wavefront shaping such as beam focusing with Fresnel Zone plate and beam steering with saw-tooth phase grating is also provided.
