5. An Investigation into Empowering Students through Cooperative Learning.

Abstract

This paper reports research into the effectiveness of cooperative social support groups as a means of empowering students to solve their own personal and social problems. A descriptive study using ethnographic techniques was used in the natural setting of one fifth-grade elementary school classroom. Theoretical framework involves the interconnection between achievement motivation and affiliative motivation; specifically, this paper provides a microanalysis of student perceptions and student interactions within a cooperative learning context and relates to the use of base groups to enhance student empowerment. Base groups, a cooperative learning structure of three or four students, were established by the teacher for a period of 1 year. Purposes of the groups were: (1) to provide support for students to solve personal and social problems; (2) to provide a structure for teaching and to reinforce social and cooperative skills. Results are presented under three headings: (1) prevailing antecedents toward the use of base groups; (2) students' perceptions of base groups; and (3) outcomes from the use of base groups. Findings establish that base groups facilitate student empowerment, particularly as students are enabled to solve their own personal and social problems as the need arises. Recommendations for teachers establishing base groups are presented. (Contains 31 references.) (EMK)

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the research writing difficulties encountered by 66 secondary pre-service teachers at Laguna University, College of Education. The study focused on four sub-problems: identifying the difficulties encountered, exploring the underlying factors, discussing the implications, and identifying potential gaps. A mixed-method approach was employed, utilizing a survey questionnaire to determine difficulties, underlying factors, and implications, while content analysis was used to identify potential gaps. The study employed a total population technique. The findings revealed that the most common difficulties faced by secondary pre-service teachers in research writing were related to reviewing the literature, analyzing and interpreting data, and developing research proposals. Furthermore, limited knowledge of research methodologies, time constraints, and inadequate feedback and revision opportunities were identified as underlying factors contributing to these difficulties. These challenges had implications for their teaching practices, such as reduced confidence in integrating research into practice, limited opportunities to publish, present, and collaborate, and restricted professional advancement. The study also identified several gaps that need to be addressed by the College of Education, including the need to improve skills in reviewing literature, analyzing and interpreting data, and conducting proposal defenses. Additionally, addressing the limited knowledge of research methodologies, time constraints, and the need for more feedback and revision opportunities were identified as crucial. It is highly recommended that the College of Education addresses these gaps and challenges, empowering researchers to effectively integrate research into teaching, contribute to the field, and promote evidence-based practices in education. Abstract

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has resulted in youth, academic and professional sport in New Zealand, and around the world suspending play and competitive seasons, as well as structured in-season and off-season training for all sports. In particular, the National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended the season on March 11, 2020, after NBA player Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19, with NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, initially reporting that the season suspension would last at least 30 days. However, more recent reports suggest that a mid-to-late-June return is likely the best-case scenario. This pivotal decision set off a chain of events that led to the postponement of several high-profile team sport events, including the NCAA men's and women's tournaments, the NHL season, MLB's spring training, the English Premier League season, La Liga season, Bundesliga season, Serie A season, UEFA’s European Championship, and Ligue 1 season, to name a few. This has led to an uncertain future, with National Basketball Leagues, across the globe facing unprecedented times which require diligent analysis, evaluation, and preparation to cope with the altered schedule, and the potential deconditioning of players. As such, the Guidelines for Safe Return to Training and Competition for Coaches and Players have been developed by Basketball New Zealand as a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In accordance with the These guidelines support the Sport New Zealand, Balance is Better National Sport Season Transition Guidelines.

Abstract

The MAKITAB system of small-group learning interaction analysis has been developed over a 4 year period. When data were gathered late in 1989 on the verbal interaction of Grade 5 students participating in small-group cooperative learning, we were faced with the problem of having to develop an appropriate analysis system. An initial system was created using inductive approaches. Following further data gathering across other grade levels and subject areas, the system has undergone successive refinements. The final instrument, as presented in this manual, has reached a state of consistency that enables coding of most verbal eventualities as they occur in the small-group cooperative learning context. Furthermore, the reliability and validity of the instrument seems to have been established. The MAKAITAB instrument should facilitate useful data gathering across a broad range of small-group cooperative learning settings.

Abstract

Cases of giant hemangioma in infancy complicated by thrombocytopenia and bleeding have been reported in the literature.1-9 The purpuric manifestations are frequently mild and intermittent, although serious intracranial and visceral hemorrhages have been encountered. Recovery follows surgical removal, radiation therapy, or, rarely, spontaneous regression. Mechanical sequestration of platelets in the vascular channels of the hemangioma is believed to be the mechanism of thrombocytopenia which results in bleeding.2This report describes a case of hemangioma associated with thrombocytopenia in a 7-day-old infant. The patient was transfused with Cr51-tagged platelets, and survival of the donor platelets was studied. Scintillation counting over the hemangioma and spleen to detect sequestration of platelets was performed.
