The recent discovery of the persistence of long-range magnetic order when van der Waals layered magnets are thinned towards the monolayer limit has provided a tunable platform for the engineering of novel magnetic structures and devices. Here, we study the evolution of the electronic structure of CrGeTe$_3$ as a function of electron doping in the surface layer. From angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe spectroscopic fingerprints that this electron doping drives a marked increase in $T_\mathrm{C}$, reaching values more than double that of the undoped material, in agreement with recent studies using electrostatic gating. Together with density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that, surprisingly, the increased $T_\mathrm{C}$ is mediated by the population of spin-minority Cr $t_{2g}$ states, forming a half-metallic 2D electron gas at the surface. We show how this promotes a novel variant of double exchange, and unlocks a significant influence of the Ge -- which was previously thought to be electronically inert in this system -- in mediating Cr-Cr exchange., Comment: 10 pages including supplementary information

The properties of correlated electron materials are often intricately linked to Van Hove singularities (VHs) in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. The class of these VHs is of great importance, with higher order ones -- with power-law divergence in the density of states -- leaving frequently distinct signatures in physical properties. We use a new theoretical method to detect and analyse higher order Van Hove singularities (HOVHs) in two-dimensional materials and apply it to the electronic structure of the surface layer of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We then constrain a low energy model of the VHs of the surface layer of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ against angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quasiparticle interference data to analyse the VHs near the Fermi level. Engineering surfaces and interfaces of materials promises great potential in the field of heterostructures and quantum matter designer, with the opportunity of driving new many-body phases that are absent in the bulk compounds. Here, we focus on the magnetic Weyl kagome system Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and show how for different sample's terminations the Weyl-points connect also differently, still preserving the bulk-boundary correspondence. Scanning-tunnelling microscopy has suggested such a scenario indirectly. Here, we demonstrate this directly for the fermiology of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, by linking it to the system real space surfaces distribution. By a combination of micro-ARPES and first-principles calculations, we measure the energy-momentum spectra and the Fermi surfaces of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ for different surface terminations and show the existence of topological features directly depending on the top-layer electronic environment. Our work helps to define a route to control bulk-derived topological properties by means of surface electrostatic potentials, creating a realistic and reliable methodology to use Weyl kagome metals in responsive magnetic spintronics.

Intermetallics are an important playground to stabilize a large variety of physical phenomena, arising from their complex crystal structure. The ease of their chemical tuneabilty makes them suitable platforms to realize targeted electronic properties starting from the symmetries hidden in their unit cell. Here, we investigate the family of the recently discovered intermetallics MCo$_2$Al$_9$ (M: Sr, Ba) and we unveil their electronic structure for the first time. By using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we discover the existence of Dirac-like dispersions as ubiquitous features in this family, coming from the hidden kagome and honeycomb symmetries embedded in the unit cell. Finally, from calculations, we expect that the spin-orbit coupling is responsible for opening energy gaps in the electronic structure spectrum, which also affects the majority of the observed Dirac-like states. Our study constitutes the first experimental observation of the electronic structure of MCo$_2$Al$_9$ and proposes these systems as hosts of Dirac-like physics with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. The latter effect suggests MCo$_2$Al$_9$ as a future platform for investigating the emergence of non-trivial topology.

Kagome materials have emerged as a setting for emergent electronic phenomena that encompass different aspects of symmetry and topology. It is debated whether the XV$_6$Sn$_6$ kagome family (where X is a rare earth element), a recently discovered family of bilayer kagome metals, hosts a topologically non-trivial ground state resulting from the opening of spin-orbit coupling gaps. These states would carry a finite spin-Berry curvature, and topological surface states. Here, we investigate the spin and electronic structure of the XV$_6$Sn$_6$ kagome family. We obtain evidence for a finite spin-Berry curvature contribution at the center of the Brillouin zone, where the nearly flat band detaches from the dispersing Dirac band because of spin-orbit coupling. In addition, the spin-Berry curvature is further investigated in the charge density wave regime of ScV$_6$Sn$_6$, and it is found to be robust against the onset of the temperature-driven ordered phase. Utilizing the sensitivity of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to the spin and orbital angular momentum, our work unveils the spin-Berry curvature of topological kagome metals, and helps to define its spectroscopic fingerprint., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Van Hove singularities (VHss) in the vicinity of the Fermi energy often play a dramatic role in the physics of strongly correlated electron materials. The divergence of the density of states generated by VHss can trigger the emergence of new phases such as superconductivity, ferromagnetism, metamagnetism, and density wave orders. A detailed understanding of the electronic structure of these VHss is therefore essential for an accurate description of such instabilities. Here, we study the low-energy electronic structure of the trilayer strontium ruthenate Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$, identifying a rich hierarchy of VHss using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and millikelvin scanning tunneling microscopy. Comparison of $k$-resolved electron spectroscopy and quasiparticle interference allows us to determine the structure of the VHss and demonstrate the crucial role of spin-orbit coupling in shaping them. We use this to develop a minimal model from which we identify a new mechanism for driving a field-induced Lifshitz transition in ferromagnetic metals., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures and supplementary material

Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ is a rare example of a layered ferrimagnet. It has recently been shown to host a colossal angular magnetoresistance as the spin orientation is rotated from the in- to out-of-plane direction, proposed to be underpinned by a topological nodal-line degeneracy in its electronic structure. Nonetheless, the origins of its ferrimagnetic structure remain controversial, while its experimental electronic structure, and the role of correlations in shaping this, are little explored to date. Here, we combine x-ray and photoemission-based spectroscopies with first-principles calculations, to probe the elemental-selective electronic structure and magnetic order in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. Through these, we identify a marked Mn-Te hybridisation, which weakens the electronic correlations and enhances the magnetic anisotropy. We demonstrate how this strengthens the magnetic frustration in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$, which is key to stabilising its ferrimagnetic order, and find a crucial role of both exchange interactions extending beyond nearest-neighbours and anti-symmetric exchange in dictating its ordering temperature. Together, our results demonstrate a powerful methodology of using experimental electronic structure probes to constrain the parameter space for first-principles calculations of magnetic materials, and through this approach, reveal a pivotal role played by covalency in stabilising the ferrimagnetic order in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$.

We report the evolution of the electronic structure at the surface of the layered perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under large in-plane uniaxial compression, leading to anisotropic $B_{1g}$ strains of ${\varepsilon_{xx}-\varepsilon_{yy}=-0.9\pm0.1\%}$. From angle-resolved photoemission, we show how this drives a sequence of Lifshitz transitions, reshaping the low-energy electronic structure and the rich spectrum of van Hove singularities that the surface layer of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ hosts. From comparison to tight-binding modelling, we find that the strain is accommodated predominantly by bond-length changes rather than modifications of octahedral tilt and rotation angles. Our study sheds new light on the nature of structural distortions at oxide surfaces, and how targeted control of these can be used to tune density of states singularities to the Fermi level, in turn paving the way to the possible realisation of rich collective states at the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ surface.

Long-range electronic order descending from a metallic parent state constitutes a rich playground to study the intricate interplay of structural and electronic degrees of freedom. With dispersive and correlation features as multifold as topological Dirac-like itinerant states, van-Hove singularities, correlated flat bands, and magnetic transitions at low temperature, kagome metals are located in the most interesting regime where both phonon and electronically mediated couplings are significant. Several of these systems undergo a charge density wave (CDW) transition, and the van-Hove singularities, which are intrinsic to the kagome tiling, have been conjectured to play a key role in mediating such an instability. However, to date, the origin and the main driving force behind this charge order is elusive. Here, we use the topological bilayer kagome metal ScV6Sn6 as a platform to investigate this puzzling problem, since it features both kagome-derived nested Fermi surface and van-Hove singularities near the Fermi level, and a CDW phase that affects the susceptibility, the neutron scattering, and the specific heat, similarly to the siblings AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) and FeGe. We report on our findings from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission, density functional theory, and time-resolved optical spectroscopy to unveil the dynamics of its CDW phase. We identify the structural degrees of freedom to play a fundamental role in the stabilization of charge order. Along with a comprehensive analysis of the subdominant impact from electronic correlations, we find ScV6Sn6 to feature an instance of charge density wave order that predominantly originates from phonons. As we shed light on the emergent phonon profile in the low-temperature ordered regime, our findings pave the way for a deeper understanding of ordering phenomena in all CDW kagome metals.

An anomalous $(2\times2)$ charge density wave (CDW) phase emerges in monolayer 1T-TiTe$_2$ which is absent for the bulk compound, and whose origin is still poorly understood. Here, we investigate the electronic band structure evolution across the CDW transition using temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our study reveals an orbital-selective band hybridisation between the backfolded conduction and valence bands occurring at the CDW phase transition, which in turn leads to a significant electronic energy gain, underpinning the CDW transition. For the bulk compound, we show how this energy gain is almost completely suppressed due to the three-dimensionality of the electronic band structure, including via a $k_z$-dependent band inversion which switches the orbital character of the valence states. Our study thus sheds new light on how control of the electronic dimensionalilty can be used to trigger the emergence of new collective states in 2D materials.

Controlling spin wave excitations in magnetic materials underpins the burgeoning field of magnonics. Yet, little is known about how magnons interact with the conduction electrons of itinerant magnets, or how this interplay can be controlled. Via a surface-sensitive spectroscopic approach, we demonstrate a strong and highly-tuneable electron-magnon coupling at the Pd-terminated surface of the delafossite oxide PdCoO$_2$, where a polar surface charge mediates a Stoner transition to itinerant surface ferromagnetism. We show how the coupling can be enhanced 7-fold with increasing surface disorder, and concomitant charge carrier doping, becoming sufficiently strong to drive the system into a polaronic regime, accompanied by a significant quasiparticle mass enhancement. Our study thus sheds new light on electron-magnon interactions in solid-state materials, and the ways in which these can be controlled.

Our studies evidence an anisotropic magnetic order below $T_N = 32$~K. Susceptibility data in small fields of about 1~T reveal an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order for $H \perp c$, whereas for $H \parallel c$ the data are reminiscent of a field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) structure. At low temperatures and for $H \perp c$, the field-dependent magnetization and AC susceptibility data evidence a metamagnetic transition at $H^+ = 5$~T, which is absent for $H \parallel c$. We assign this to a transition from a planar cycloidal spin structure at low fields to a planar fan-like arrangement above $H^+$. A fully FM polarized state is obtained above the saturation field of $H_{\perp S} = 23.7$~T at 2~K with a magnetization of $M_s = 2.8$~$\mu_{\rm B}{\rm /Cr}$. For $H \parallel c$, $M(H)$ monotonously increases and saturates at the same $M_s$ value at $H_{\parallel S} = 25.1$~T at 4.2~K. Above $T_N $, the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate signatures of two dimensional (2D) frustration related to the presence of planar ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. We found a pronounced nearly isotropic maximum in both properties at about $T^* = 45$~K, which is a clear fingerprint of short-range correlations and emergent spin fluctuations. Calculations based on a planar 2D Heisenberg model support our experimental findings and suggest a predominant FM exchange among nearest and AFM exchange among third-nearest neighbors. Only a minor contribution might be assigned to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction possible related to the non-centrosymmetric polar space group $R3m$. Due to these competing interactions, the magnetism in AgCrSe$_{2}$, in contrast to the oxygen based delafossites, can be tuned by relatively small, experimentally accessible, magnetic fields, allowing us to establish the complete anisotropic magnetic $H-T$ phase diagram in detail.

The quasiparticle spectra of atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and their response to an ultrafast optical excitation critically depend on interactions with the underlying substrate. Here, we present a comparative time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) study of the transient electronic structure and ultrafast carrier dynamics in the single- and bilayer TMDCs MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ on three different substrates: Au(111), Ag(111) and graphene/SiC. The photoexcited quasiparticle bandgaps are observed to vary over the range of 1.9-2.3 eV between our systems. The transient conduction band signals decay on a sub-100 fs timescale on the metals, signifying an efficient removal of photoinduced carriers into the bulk metallic states. On graphene, we instead observe two timescales on the order of 200 fs and 50 ps, respectively, for the conduction band decay in MoS$_2$. These multiple timescales are explained by Auger recombination involving MoS$_2$ and in-gap defect states. In bilayer TMDCs on metals we observe a complex redistribution of excited holes along the valence band that is substantially affected by interactions with the continuum of bulk metallic states., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging is well established to study the low-energy electronic structure in strongly correlated electron materials with unrivalled energy resolution. Yet, being a surface-sensitive technique, the interpretation of QPI only works well for anisotropic materials, where the dispersion in the direction perpendicular to the surface can be neglected and the quasiparticle interference is dominated by a quasi-2D electronic structure. Here, we explore QPI imaging of galena, a material with an electronic structure that does not exhibit pronounced anisotropy. We find that the quasiparticle interference signal is dominated by scattering vectors which are parallel to the surface plane however originate from bias-dependent cuts of the 3D electronic structure. We develop a formalism for the theoretical description of the QPI signal and demonstrate how this quasiparticle tomography can be used to obtain information about the 3D electronic structure and orbital character of the bands., Comment: replaced by published version

We apply an intense infrared laser pulse in order to perturb the electronic and vibrational states in the three-dimensional charge density wave material 1$T$-VSe$_2$. Ultrafast snapshots of the light-induced hot carrier dynamics and non-equilibrium quasiparticle spectral function are collected using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The hot carrier temperature and time-dependent electronic self-energy are extracted from the time-dependent spectral function, revealing that incoherent electron-phonon interactions heat the lattice above the charge density wave critical temperature on a timescale of $(200 \pm 40)$~fs. Density functional perturbation theory calculations establish that the presence of hot carriers alters the overall phonon dispersion and quenches efficient low-energy acoustic phonon scattering channels, which results in a new quasi-equilibrium state that is experimentally observed., Comment: 24 pages including supplemental material, 4 figures in the main text and 4 figures in the supplemental material

Stoichiometric SnTe is theoretically a small gap semiconductor that undergoes a ferroelectric distortion on cooling. In reality however, crystals are always non-stoichiometric and metallic; the ferroelectric transition is therefore more accurately described as a polar structural transition. Here we study the Fermi surface using quantum oscillations as a function of pressure. We find the oscillation spectrum changes at high pressure, due to the suppression of the polar transition and less than 10 kbar is sufficient to stabilize the undistorted cubic lattice. This is accompanied by a large decrease in the Hall and electrical resistivity. Combined with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements this suggests the Fermi surface $L$-pockets have lower mobility than the tubular Fermi surfaces that connect them. Also captured in our DFT calculations is a small widening of the band gap and shift in density of states for the polar phase. Additionally we find the unusual phenomenon of a linear magnetoresistance that exists irrespective of the distortion that we attribute to regions of the Fermi surface with high curvature., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Assembling transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) at the two-dimensional (2D) limit is a promising approach for tailoring emerging states of matter such as superconductivity or charge density waves (CDWs). Single-layer (SL) VSe$_2$ stands out in this regard because it exhibits a strongly enhanced CDW transition with a higher transition temperature compared to the bulk in addition to an insulating phase with an anisotropic gap at the Fermi level, causing a suppression of anticipated 2D ferromagnetism in the material. Here, we investigate the interplay of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom that underpin these electronic phases in SL VSe$_2$ using ultrafast pump-probe photoemission spectroscopy. In the insulating state, we observe a light-induced closure of the energy gap on a timescale of 480 fs, which we disentangle from the ensuing hot carrier dynamics. Polar distortions in solids give rise to the well-known functionality of switchable macroscopic polarisation in ferroelectrics and, when combined with strong spin-orbit coupling, can mediate giant spin splittings of electronic states. While typically found in insulators, ferroelectric-like distortions can remain robust against increasing itineracy, giving rise to so-called "polar metals". Here, we investigate the temperature-dependent electronic structure of Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, a correlated oxide metal in which octahedral tilts and rotations combine to mediate pronounced polar distortions. Our angle-resolved photoemission measurements reveal the destruction of a large hole-like Fermi surface upon cooling through a coupled structural and spin-reorientation transition at 48 K, accompanied by a sudden onset of quasiparticle coherence. We demonstrate how these result from band hybridisation mediated by a hidden Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. This is enabled by the bulk structural distortions and unlocked when the spin reorients perpendicular to the local symmetry-breaking potential at the Ru sites. We argue that the electronic energy gain associated with the band hybridisation is actually the key driver for the phase transition, reflecting a delicate interplay between spin-orbit coupling and strong electronic correlations, and revealing a new route to control magnetic ordering in solids., Comment: Contains 6+5 pages, including supplementary information

We investigate the temperature-dependent electronic structure of the van der Waals ferromagnet, CrGeTe$_3$. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we identify atomic- and orbital-specific band shifts upon cooling through ${T_\mathrm{C}}$. From these, together with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, we identify the states created by a covalent bond between the Te ${5p}$ and the Cr ${e_g}$ orbitals as the primary driver of the ferromagnetic ordering in this system, while it is the Cr ${t_{2g}}$ states that carry the majority of the spin moment. The ${t_{2g}}$ states furthermore exhibit a marked bandwidth increase and a remarkable lifetime enhancement upon entering the ordered phase, pointing to a delicate interplay between localized and itinerant states in this family of layered ferromagnets.

We present a combined study from angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory calculations of the temperature-dependent electronic structure in the excitonic insulator candidate Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. Our experimental measurements unambiguously establish the normal state as a semimetal with a significant band overlap of $>$100~meV. Our temperature-dependent measurements indicate how these low-energy states hybridise when cooling through the well-known 327~K phase transition in this system. From our calculations and polarisation-dependent photoemission measurements, we demonstrate the importance of a loss of mirror symmetry in enabling the band hybridisation, driven by a shear-like structural distortion which reduces the crystal symmetry from orthorhombic to monoclinic. Our results thus point to the key role of the lattice distortion in enabling the phase transition of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Band inversions are key to stabilising a variety of novel electronic states in solids, from topological surface states in inverted bulk band gaps of topological insulators to the formation of symmetry-protected three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl points and nodal-line semimetals. Here, we create a band inversion not of bulk states, but rather between manifolds of surface states. We realise this by aliovalent substitution of Nb for Zr and Sb for S in the ZrSiS family of nonsymmorphic semimetals. Using angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory, we show how two pairs of surface states, known from ZrSiS, are driven to intersect each other in the vicinity of the Fermi level in NbGeSb, as well as to develop pronounced spin-orbit mediated spin splittings. We demonstrate how mirror symmetry leads to protected crossing points in the resulting spin-orbital entangled surface band structure, thereby stabilising surface state analogues of three-dimensional Weyl points. To advance fundamental understanding, and ultimate application, of transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers, it is essential to develop capabilities for the synthesis of high-quality single-layer samples. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), a leading technique for the fabrication of the highest-quality epitaxial films of conventional semiconductors has, however, typically yielded only small grain sizes and sub-optimal morphologies when applied to the van der Waals growth of monolayer TMDs. Here, we present a systematic study on the influence of adatom mobility, growth rate, and metal:chalcogen flux on the growth of NbSe2, VSe2 and TiSe2 using MBE. Through this, we identify the key drivers and influence of the adatom kinetics that control the epitaxial growth of TMDs, realising four distinct morphologies of the as-grown compounds. We use this to determine optimised growth conditions for the fabrication of high-quality monolayers, ultimately realising the largest grain sizes of monolayer TMDs that have been achieved to date via MBE growth.

Two-dimensional (2D) metallic states induced by oxygen vacancies at oxide surfaces and interfaces provide new opportunities for the development of advanced applications, but the ability to control the behavior of these states is still limited. We used Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy combined with density functional theory to study the reactivity of states induced by the oxygen vacancies at the (001)-(1x4) surface of anatase TiO2, where both 2D metallic and deeper lying in-gap states (IGs) are observed. Remarkably, the two states exhibit very different evolution when the surface is exposed to molecular O2: while IGs are almost completely quenched, the metallic states are only weakly affected. The energy scale analysis for the vacancy migration and recombination resulting from the DFT calculations confirms indeed that only the IGs originate from and remain localized at the surface, whereas the metallic states originate from subsurface vacancies, whose migration and recombination at the surface is energetically less favorable rendering them therefore insensitive to oxygen dosing.

Inversion-symmetric crystals are optically isotropic and thus naively not expected to show dichroism effects in optical absorption and photoemission processes. Here, we find a strong linear dichroism effect (up to 42.4%) in the conduction band of inversion-symmetric bilayer MoS$_2$, when measuring energy- and momentum-resolved snapshots of excited electrons by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We model the polarization-dependent photoemission intensity in the transiently-populated conduction band using the semiconductor Bloch equations and show that the observed dichroism emerges from intralayer single-particle effects within the isotropic part of the dispersion. Among Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides, mono and few-layers thick VSe2 has gained much recent attention following claims of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in this system, which have nonetheless proved controversial. Here, we address the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/VSe2 heterostructure by combining element sensitive absorption spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results confirm recent findings that both native mono/few-layer and bulk VSe2 do not show any signature of an intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering. Nonetheless, we find that ferromagnetism can be induced, even at room temperature, after coupling with a Fe thin film layer, with antiparallel alignment of the moment on the V with respect to Fe. We further consider the chemical reactivity at the Fe/VSe2 interface and its relation with interfacial magnetic coupling.

The downscaling of silicon-based structures and proto-devices has now reached the single atom scale, representing an important milestone for the development of a silicon-based quantum computer. One especially notable platform for atomic scale device fabrication is the so-called SiP delta-layer, consisting of an ultra dense and sharp layer of dopants within a semiconductor host. Whilst several alternatives exist, phosphorus dopants in silicon have drawn the most interest, and it is on this platform that many quantum proto-devices have been successfully demonstrated. Motivated by this, both calculations and experiments have been dedicated to understanding the electronic structure of the SiP delta-layer platform. In this work, we use high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to reveal the structure of the electronic states which exist because of the high dopant density of the SiP delta-layer. In contrast to published theoretical work, we resolve three distinct bands, the most occupied of which shows a large anisotropy and significant deviation from simple parabolic behaviour. We investigate the possible origins of this fine structure, and conclude that it is primarily a consequence of the dielectric constant being large (ca. double that of bulk Si). Incorporating this factor into tight binding calculations leads to a major revision of band structure; specifically, the existence of a third band, the separation of the bands, and the departure from purely parabolic behaviour. Pressure represents a clean tuning parameter for traversing the complex phase diagrams of interacting electron systems and as such has proved of key importance in the study of quantum materials. Application of controlled uniaxial pressure has recently been shown to more than double the transition temperature of the unconventional superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ for example, leading to a pronounced peak in $T_\mathrm{c}$ vs. strain whose origin is still under active debate. Here, we develop a simple and compact method to apply large uniaxial pressures passively in restricted sample environments, and utilize this to study the evolution of the electronic structure of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ using angle-resolved photoemission. We directly visualize how uniaxial stress drives a Lifshitz transition of the $\gamma$-band Fermi surface, pointing to the key role of strain-tuning its associated van Hove singularity to the Fermi level in mediating the peak in $T_\mathrm{c}$. Our measurements provide stringent constraints for theoretical models of the strain-tuned electronic structure evolution of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. More generally, our novel experimental approach opens the door to future studies of strain-tuned phase transitions not only using photoemission, but also other experimental techniques where large pressure cells or piezoelectric-based devices may be difficult to implement.

Resistivity measurements of TiSe$_2$ typically show only a weak change in gradient at the charge density wave transition at $T_{CDW}\approx$ 200~K, but more prominently feature a broad peak at a lower $T_{peak}\sim$ 165~K, which has remained poorly understood despite decades of research on the material. Here we present quantitative simulations of the resistivity using a simplified parametrization of the normal state band structure, based on recent photoemission data. Our simulations reproduce the overall profile of the resistivity of TiSe$_2$, including its prominent peak, without implementing the CDW at all. We find that the peak in resistivity corresponds to a crossover between a low temperature regime with electron-like carriers only, to a regime around room temperature where thermally activated and highly mobile hole-like carriers dominate the conductivity. Even when implementing substantial modifications to model the CDW below the transition temperature, we find that these thermal population effects still dominate the transport properties of TiSe$_2$.

The band inversions that generate the topologically non-trivial band gaps of topological insulators and the isolated Dirac touching points of three-dimensional Dirac semimetals generally arise from the crossings of electronic states derived from different orbital manifolds. Recently, the concept of single orbital-manifold band inversions occurring along high-symmetry lines has been demonstrated, stabilising multiple bulk and surface Dirac fermions. Here, we discuss the underlying ingredients necessary to achieve such phases, and discuss their existence within the family of transition metal dichalcogenides. We show how their three-dimensional band structures naturally produce only small $k_z$ projected band gaps, and demonstrate how these play a significant role in shaping the surface electronic structure of these materials. We demonstrate, through spin- and angle-resolved photoemission and density functional theory calculations, how the surface electronic structures of the group-X TMDs PtSe$_2$ and PdTe$_2$ are host to up to five distinct surface states, each with complex band dispersions and spin textures. Finally, we discuss how the origin of several recently-realised instances of topological phenomena in systems outside of the TMDs, including the iron-based superconductors, can be understood as a consequence of the same underlying mechanism driving $k_z$-mediated band inversions in the TMDs., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the response of metallic single layer TaS$_2$ in the 1H structural modification to the generation of excited carriers by a femtosecond laser pulse. A complex interplay of band structure modifications and electronic temperature increase is observed and analyzed by direct fits of model spectral functions to the two-dimensional (energy and $k$-dependent) photoemission data. Upon excitation, the partially occupied valence band is found to shift to higher binding energies by up to 150 meV, accompanied by electronic temperatures exceeding 3000~K. These observations are explained by a combination of temperature-induced shifts of the chemical potential, as well as temperature-induced changes in static screening. Both contributions are evaluated in a semi-empirical tight-binding model. The shift resulting from a change in the chemical potential is found to be dominant., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We study the electronic structure of delafossite PtCoO$_2$ to elucidate its extremely small resistivity and high mobility. The band exhibits steep dispersion near the Fermi level despite the fact that it is formed mainly by Pt $d$ orbitals that are typically localized. We propose a picture based on two hidden kagome-lattice-like electronic structure: one originating from Pt $s+p_x/p_y$ orbitals, and the other from Pt $d_{3z^2-r^2}+d_{xy}/d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, each placed on the bonds of the triangular lattice. In particular, we find that the underlying Pt $s+p_x/p_y$ bands actually determine the steepness of the original dispersion, so that the large Fermi velocity can be attributed to the large width of the Pt $s+p_x/p_y$ band. More importantly, the kagome-like electronic structure gives rise to "orbital-momentum locking" on the Fermi surface, which reduces the electron scattering by impurities. We conclude that the combination of the large Fermi velocity and the orbital-momentum locking is likely to be the origin of the extremely small resistivity in PtCoO$_2$., Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures

We explore the interplay of electron-electron correlations and spin-orbit coupling in the model Fermi liquid Sr2RuO4 using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our precise measurement of the Fermi surface confirms the importance of spin-orbit coupling in this material and reveals that its effective value is enhanced by a factor of about two, due to electronic correlations. The self-energies for the $\beta$ and $\gamma$ sheets are found to display significant angular dependence. By taking into account the multi-orbital composition of quasiparticle states, we determine self-energies associated with each orbital component directly from the experimental data. This analysis demonstrates that the perceived angular dependence does not imply momentum-dependent many-body effects, but arises from a substantial orbital mixing induced by spin-orbit coupling. A comparison to single-site dynamical mean-field theory further supports the notion of dominantly local orbital self-energies, and provides strong evidence for an electronic origin of the observed non-linear frequency dependence of the self-energies, leading to `kinks' in the quasiparticle dispersion of Sr2RuO4., Comment: PRX accepted

We investigate the electronic structure of a two-dimensional electron gas created at the surface of the multi-valley semimetal 1T-PtSe$_2$. Using angle-resolved photoemission and first-principles-based surface space charge calculations, we show how the induced quantum well subband states form multiple Fermi surfaces which exhibit highly anisotropic Rashba-like spin splittings. We further show how the presence of both electron- and hole-like bulk carriers causes the near-surface band bending potential to develop an unusual non-monotonic form, with spatially-segregated electron accumulation and hole accumulation regions, which in turn amplifies the induced spin splitting. Our results thus demonstrate the novel environment that semimetals provide for tailoring electrostatically-induced potential profiles and their corresponding quantum subband states, Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The two-dimensional (2D) metal PtCoO$_2$ is renowned for the lowest room temperature resistivity among all oxides, close to that of the top two materials Ag and Cu. In addition, we theoretically predict a strong intrinsic spin Hall effect. This originates from six strongly-tilted Dirac cones that we find in the electronic structure near the Fermi surface, where a gap is opened by large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). This is underpinned by rich topological properties; in particular, the phenomenology of a mirror Chern metal is realized not exactly, but very accurately, on account of an approximate crystalline symmetry. We expect that such 'vicinity topology' to be a feature of relevance well beyond this material. Our Wilson loop analysis indicates further elaborate features such as fragile topology. These findings highlight PtCoO$_2$ as a promising material for spintronic applications as well as a platform to study the interplay of symmetry and topology., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

A nearly free electron metal and a Mott insulating state can be thought of as opposite ends of possibilities for the motion of electrons in a solid. In the magnetic oxide metal PdCrO$_{2}$, these two coexist as alternating layers. Using angle resolved photoemission, we surprisingly find sharp band-like features in the one-electron removal spectral function of the correlated subsystem. We show that these arise because a hole created in the Mott layer moves to and propagates in the metallic layer while retaining memory of the Mott layer's magnetism. This picture is quantitatively supported by a strong coupling analysis capturing the physics of PdCrO$_{2}$ in terms of a Kondo lattice Hamiltonian. Our findings open new routes to use the non-magnetic probe of photoemission to gain insights into the spin-susceptibility of correlated electron systems.

We revisit the enduring problem of the $2\times{}2\times{}2$ charge density wave (CDW) order in TiSe$_2$, utilising photon energy-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe the full three-dimensional high- and low-temperature electronic structure. Our measurements demonstrate how a mismatch of dimensionality between the 3D conduction bands and the quasi-2D valence bands in this system leads to a hybridisation that is strongly $k_z$-dependent. While such a momentum-selective coupling can provide the energy gain required to form the CDW, we show how additional "passenger" states remain, which couple only weakly to the CDW and thus dominate the low-energy physics in the ordered phase of TiSe$_2$.

We have studied magneto transport in the single-band, quasi-two-dimensional metals PdCoO2 and PtCoO2, which have extremely long mean free paths. We observer a strong temperature dependence of the Hall resistivity in small applied, fields, linked to a large violation of Kohler's rule in the magnetoresistance. We discuss the extent to which these observations can be accounted for by standard transport theory, and describe other possible, unconventional contributions to magnetotransport in very high purity metals.

We study the low-energy surface electronic structure of the transition-metal dichalcogenide superconductor PdTe$_2$ by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density-functional theory-based supercell calculations. Comparing PdTe$_2$ with its sister compound PtSe$_2$, we demonstrate how enhanced inter-layer hopping in the Te-based material drives a band inversion within the anti-bonding p-orbital manifold well above the Fermi level. We show how this mediates spin-polarised topological surface states which form rich multi-valley Fermi surfaces with complex spin textures. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals type-II superconductivity at the surface, and moreover shows no evidence for an unconventional component of its superconducting order parameter, despite the presence of topological surface states., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We study the electronic structure of the Pd-terminated surface of the non-magnetic delafossite oxide metal PdCoO$_2$. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional theory, we show how an electronic reconstruction driven by surface polarity mediates a Stoner-like magnetic instability towards itinerant surface ferromagnetism. Our results reveal how this leads to a rich multi-band surface electronic structure, and provide spectroscopic evidence for an intriguing sample-dependent coupling of the surface electrons to a bosonic mode which we attribute to electron-magnon interactions. Moreover, we find similar surface state dispersions in PdCrO$_2$, suggesting surface ferromagnetism persists in this sister compound despite its bulk antiferromagnetic order., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Engineering and enhancing inversion symmetry breaking in solids is a major goal in condensed matter physics and materials science, as a route to advancing new physics and applications ranging from improved ferroelectrics for memory devices to materials hosting Majorana zero modes for quantum computing. Here, we uncover a new mechanism for realising a much larger energy scale of inversion symmetry breaking at surfaces and interfaces than is typically achieved. The key ingredient is a pronounced asymmetry of surface hopping energies, i.e. a kinetic energy-driven inversion symmetry breaking, whose energy scale is pinned at a significant fraction of the bandwidth. We show, from spin- and angle-resolved photoemission, how this enables surface states of 3d and 4d-based transition-metal oxides to surprisingly develop some of the largest Rashba-like spin splittings that are known. Our findings open new possibilities to produce spin textured states in oxides which exploit the full potential of the bare atomic spin-orbit coupling, raising exciting prospects for oxide spintronics. More generally, the core structural building blocks which enable this are common to numerous materials, providing the prospect of enhanced inversion symmetry breaking at judiciously-chosen surfaces of a plethora of compounds, and suggesting routes to interfacial control of inversion symmetry breaking in designer heterostructures.

The electronic structure of a single Na monolayer on the surface of single-crystal HfSe$_2$ is investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that this system exhibits an almost perfect "nearly-free-electron" behavior with an extracted effective mass of $\sim\!1m_e$, in contrast to heavier masses found previously for alkali metal monolayers on other substrates. Our density-functional-theory calculations indicate that this is due to the large lattice constant, causing both exchange and correlation interactions to be suppressed, and to the weak hybridization between the overlayer and the substrate. This is therefore an ideal model system for understanding the properties of two-dimensional materials., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report on a combined study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy on single crystals of the metallic delafossite PdRhO$_2$ rounded off by \textit{ab initio} band structure calculations. A high sensitivity torque magnetometry setup with SQUID readout and synchrotron-based photoemission with a light spot size of $~50\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ enabled high resolution data to be obtained from samples as small as $150\times100\times20\,(\mu\mathrm{m})^3$. The Fermi surface shape is nearly cylindrical with a rounded hexagonal cross section enclosing a Luttinger volume of 1.00(1) electrons per formula unit.

We describe a tunable low-energy photon source consisting of a laser-driven xenon plasma lamp coupled to a Czerny-Turner monochromator. The combined tunability, brightness, and narrow spectral bandwidth make this light source useful in laboratory-based high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy experiments. The source supplies photons with energies up to ~7 eV, delivering under typical conditions >10^12 ph/s within a 10 meV spectral bandwidth, which is comparable to helium plasma lamps and many synchrotron beamlines. We first describe the lamp and monochromator system and then characterize its output, with attention to those parameters which are of interest for photoemission experiments. Finally, we present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data using the light source and compare its performance to a conventional helium plasma lamp.

We have used angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the band structure of ReS$_2$, a transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductor with a distorted 1T crystal structure. We find a large number of narrow valence bands, which we attribute to the combined influence of the structural distortion and spin-orbit coupling. We further image how this leads to a strong in-plane anisotropy of the electronic structure, with quasi-one-dimensional bands reflecting predominant hopping along zig-zag Re chains. We find that this does not persist up to the top of the valence band, where a more three-dimensional character is recovered with the fundamental band gap located away from the Brillouin zone centre along $k_z$. These experiments are in good agreement with our density-functional theory calculations, shedding new light on the bulk electronic structure of ReS$_2$, and how it can be expected to evolve when thinned to a single layer.
