Search

Measurements of the EMC effect in the tritium and helium-3 mirror nuclei are reported. The data were obtained by the MARATHON Jefferson Lab experiment, which performed deep inelastic electron scattering from deuterium and the three-body nuclei, using a cryogenic gas target system and the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility of the Lab. The data cover the Bjorken $x$ range from 0.20 to 0.83, corresponding to a squared four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ range from 2.7 to $11.9\gevsq$, and to an invariant mass $W$ of the final hadronic state greater than 1.84 GeV/${\it c}^2$. The tritium EMC effect measurement is the first of its kind. We present the initial data for the ($J = 3 \to 2$) transition of $^{13}$CO obtained from the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way as part of the CO Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey 2 (CHIMPS2). Covering $359^\circ \leq l \leq 1^\circ$ and $|b| \leq 0.5^\circ$ with an angular resolution of 19 arcsec, velocity resolution of 1 km s$^{-1}$, and rms $T_A^* = 0.59$ K at these resolutions, our observations unveil the complex structure of the CMZ molecular gas in improved detail. Complemented by the $^{12}$CO CHIMPS2 data, we estimate a median optical depth of $\tau_{13} = 0.087$. The preliminary analysis yields a median $^{13}$CO column density range equal to $N(^{13}\text{CO})= 2$--$5 \times 10^{18}$ cm$^{-2}$, median H$_2$ column density equal to $N(\text{H}_2)= 4 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ to $1 \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. We derive $N(\text{H}_2)$-based total mass estimates of $M(\text{H}_2)= 2$--$6 \times 10^7\, M_{\odot}$, in agreement with previous studies. We analyze the relationship between the integrated intensity of $^{13}$CO and the surface density of compact sources identified by Herschel Hi-GAL, and find that younger Hi-GAL sources detected at 500 $\mu$m but not at 70 $\mu$m follow the dense gas of the CMZ more closely than those that are bright at 70 $\mu$m. Graph partitioning (GP) and vertex connectivity have traditionally been two distinct fields of study. This paper introduces the highly connected graph partitioning (HCGP) problem, which partitions a graph into compact, size balanced, and $Q$-(vertex) connected parts for any $Q\geq 1$. This problem is valuable in applications that seek cohesion and fault-tolerance within their parts, such as community detection in social networks and resiliency-focused partitioning of power networks. Existing research in this fundamental interconnection primarily focuses on providing theoretical existence guarantees of highly connected partitions for a limited set of dense graphs, and do not include canonical GP considerations such as size balance and compactness. This paper's key contribution is providing a general modeling and algorithmic approach for HCGP, inspired by recent work in the political districting problem, a special case of HCGP with $Q=1$. This approach models $Q$-connectivity constraints as mixed integer programs for any $Q\geq 1$ and provides an efficient branch-and-cut method to solve HCGP. When solution time is a priority over optimality, this paper provides a heuristic method specifically designed for HCGP with $Q=2$. A computational analysis evaluates these methods using a test bed of instances from various real-world graphs. In this analysis, the branch-and-cut method finds an optimal solution within one hour in $82.8\%$ of the instances solved. For $Q=2$, small and sparse instances are challenging for the heuristic, whereas large and sparse instances are challenging for the exact method. Furthermore, this study quantifies the computational cost of ensuring higher connectivity using the branch-and-cut approach, compared to a baseline of ensuring $1$-connectivity. Overall, this work serves as an effective tool to partition a graph into resilient and cohesive parts.

Accurate interaction potentials between microscopic components such as colloidal particles or cells are crucial to understanding a range of processes, including colloidal crystallization, bacterial colony formation, and cancer metastasis. Even in systems where the precise interaction mechanisms are unknown, effective interactions can be measured to inform simulation and design. However, these measurements are difficult and time-intensive, and often require conditions that are drastically different from in situ conditions of the system of interest. Moreover, existing methods of measuring interparticle potentials rely on constraining a small number of particles at equilibrium, placing limits on which interactions can be measured. We introduce a method for inferring interaction potentials directly from trajectory data of interacting particles. We explicitly solve the equations of motion to find a form of the potential that maximizes the probability of observing a known trajectory. Our method is valid for systems both in and out of equilibrium, is well-suited to large numbers of particles interacting in typical system conditions, and does not assume a functional form of the interaction potential. We apply our method to infer the interactions of colloidal spheres from experimental data, successfully extracting the range and strength of a depletion interaction from the motion of the particles.

Particles that scatter waves interact through the waves they scatter. We establish that wave-mediated interactions between dissimilar particles are generically nonreciprocal. This apparent violation of Newton's third law is allowed because the pair of particles does not constitute a closed system; the balance of the system's momentum is carried away by the scattered wave. Nonreciprocal interactions enable collections of scatterers to transduce energy out of a wave and use it to power their own motion. Such wave-matter composites therefore are a form of active matter. Their activity, however, is not an inherent property of the individual particles, nor are the particles simply driven by the wave. Instead, the particles' collective motion is an emergent property of their state of organization. This kind of emergent activity should appear in any context where objects scatter waves. As a concrete example, we combine analysis, experiment and simulation to demonstrate how nonreciprocity and emergent activity arise in collections of acoustically levitated spheres.

Inclusive electron scattering at carefully chosen kinematics can isolate scattering from short-range correlations (SRCs), produced through hard, short-distance interactions of nucleons in the nucleus. Because the two-nucleon (2N) SRCs arise from the same N-N interaction in all nuclei, the cross section in the SRC-dominated regime is identical up to an overall scaling factor, and the A/2H cross section ratio is constant in this region. This scaling behavior has been used to identify SRC dominance and to map out the contribution of SRCs for a wide range of nuclei. We examine this scaling behavior at lower momentum transfers using new data on $^2$H, $^3$H, and $^3$He which show that the scaling region is larger than in heavy nuclei. Based on the improved scaling, especially for $^3$H/$^3$He, we examine the ratios at kinematics where three-nucleon SRCs may play an important role. The data for the largest initial nucleon momenta are consistent with isolation of scattering from 3N-SRCs, and suggest that the very-highest momentum nucleons in $^3$He have a nearly isospin-independent momentum configuration, or a small enhancement of the proton distribution.

While stellar processes are believed to be the main source of feedback in dwarf galaxies, the accumulating discoveries of AGN in dwarf galaxies over recent years arouse the interest to also consider AGN feedback in them. Fast, AGN-driven outflows, a major mechanism of AGN feedback, have indeed been discovered in dwarf galaxies and may be powerful enough to provide feedback to their dwarf hosts. In this paper, we search for outflows traced by the blueshifted ultraviolet absorption features in three dwarf galaxies with AGN from the sample examined in our previous ground-based study. We confirm outflows traced by blueshifted absorption features in two objects and tentatively detect an outflow in the third object. In one object where the outflow is clearly detected in multiple species, photoionization modeling suggests that this outflow is located $\sim$0.5 kpc from the AGN, implying a galactic-scale impact. This outflow is much faster and possesses higher kinetic energy outflow rate than starburst-driven outflows in sources with similar star formation rates, and is likely energetic enough to provide negative feedback to its host galaxy as predicted by simulations. Much broader ($\sim$4000 km s$^{-1}$) absorption features are also discovered in this object which may have the same origin as that of broad absorption lines in quasars. Additionally, strong He II $\lambda$1640 emission is detected in both objects where the transition falls in the wavelength coverage, and is consistent with an AGN origin. Designing components that can robustly self-assemble into structures with biological complexity is a grand challenge for material science. Proofreading and error correction is required to improve assembly yield beyond equilibrium limits, using energy to avoid kinetic traps in the energy landscape. Here we introduce an explicit two staged proofreading scheme for patchy particle colloidal assemblies that substantially improves assembly yield and robustness. The first stage implements local rules whereby particles increase their binding strengths when they detect a local environment corresponding to a desired target. The second stage corrects remaining errors, adding a reverse pathway inspired by kinetic proofreading. The scheme shows significant yield improvements, eliminating kinetic traps, giving a much broader temperature range with high yield. Additionally, the scheme is robust against quenched disorder in the components. Our findings illuminate a pathway for advancing programmable design of synthetic living materials, potentially fostering the synthesis of novel biological materials and functional behaviors.

Direct design of complex functional materials would revolutionize technologies ranging from printable organs to novel clean energy devices. However, even incremental steps towards designing functional materials have proven challenging. If the material is constructed from highly complex components, the design space of materials properties rapidly becomes too computationally expensive to search. On the other hand, very simple components such as uniform spherical particles are not powerful enough to capture rich functional behavior. Here, we introduce a differentiable materials design model with components that are simple enough to design yet powerful enough to capture complex materials properties: rigid bodies composed of spherical particles with directional interactions (patchy particles). We showcase the method with self-assembly designs ranging from open lattices to self-limiting clusters, all of which are notoriously challenging design goals to achieve using purely isotropic particles. By directly optimizing over the location and interaction of the patches on patchy particles using gradient descent, we dramatically reduce the computation time for finding the optimal building blocks.

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron encode information on the spatial structure of their charge and magnetization distributions. While measurements of the proton are relatively straightforward, the lack of a free neutron target makes measurements of the neutron's electromagnetic structure more challenging and more sensitive to experimental or model-dependent uncertainties. Various experiments have attempted to extract the neutron form factors from scattering from the neutron in deuterium, with different techniques providing different, and sometimes large, systematic uncertainties. We present results from a novel measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor using quasielastic scattering from the mirror nuclei $^3$H and $^3$He, where the nuclear effects are larger than for deuterium but expected to largely cancel in the cross-section ratios. In this work, we study policy poisoning through state manipulation, also known as sensor spoofing, and focus specifically on the case of an agent forming a control policy through batch learning in a linear-quadratic (LQ) system. In this scenario, an attacker aims to trick the learner into implementing a targeted malicious policy by manipulating the batch data before the agent begins its learning process. An attack model is crafted to carry out the poisoning strategically, with the goal of modifying the batch data as little as possible to avoid detection by the learner. We establish an optimization framework to guide the design of such policy poisoning attacks. The presence of bi-linear constraints in the optimization problem requires the design of a computationally efficient algorithm to obtain a solution. Therefore, we develop an iterative scheme based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) which is able to return solutions that are approximately optimal. This whitepaper presents the research priorities decided on by attendees of the 2022 Town Meeting for Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons and Neutrinos, which took place December 13-15, 2022 in Chapel Hill, NC, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 275 scientists registered for the meeting. The whitepaper makes a number of explicit recommendations and justifies them in detail.

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. When protons and neutrons (nucleons) are bound into atomic nuclei, they are close enough together to feel significant attraction, or repulsion, from the strong, short-distance part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. These strong interactions lead to hard collisions between nucleons, generating pairs of highly-energetic nucleons referred to as short-range correlations (SRCs). SRCs are an important but relatively poorly understood part of nuclear structure and mapping out the strength and isospin structure (neutron-proton vs proton-proton pairs) of these virtual excitations is thus critical input for modeling a range of nuclear, particle, and astrophysics measurements. Hitherto measurements used two-nucleon knockout or ``triple-coincidence'' reactions to measure the relative contribution of np- and pp-SRCs by knocking out a proton from the SRC and detecting its partner nucleon (proton or neutron). These measurementsshow that SRCs are almost exclusively np pairs, but had limited statistics and required large model-dependent final-state interaction (FSI) corrections. We report on the first measurement using inclusive scattering from the mirror nuclei $^3$H and $^3$He to extract the np/pp ratio of SRCs in the A=3 system. We obtain a measure of the np/pp SRC ratio that is an order of magnitude more precise than previous experiments, and find a dramatic deviation from the near-total np dominance observed in heavy nuclei. This result implies an unexpected structure in the high-momentum wavefunction for $^3$He and $^3$H. Understanding these results will improve our understanding of the short-range part of the N-N interaction.

The nuclear dependence of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross section (the EMC effect) has been measured for the first time in $^{10}$B and $^{11}$B. Previous measurements of the EMC effect in $A \leq 12$ nuclei showed an unexpected nuclear dependence; $^{10}$B and $^{11}$B were measured to explore the EMC effect in this region in more detail. Results are presented for $^9$Be, $^{10}$B, $^{11}$B, and $^{12}$C at an incident beam energy of 10.6~GeV. The EMC effect in the boron isotopes was found to be similar to that for $^9$Be and $^{12}$C, yielding almost no nuclear dependence in the EMC effect in the range $A=4-12$. This represents important, new data supporting the hypothesis that the EMC effect depends primarily on the local nuclear environment due to the cluster structure of these nuclei., Comment: To appear in PRC

Quasi-elastic scattering on $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ was measured in Hall C at Jefferson Lab for space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ in the range of 8--14.2\,(GeV/$c$)$^2$ with proton momenta up to 8.3\,GeV/$c$. The experiment was carried out in the upgraded Hall C at Jefferson Lab. It used the existing high momentum spectrometer and the new super high momentum spectrometer to detect the scattered electrons and protons in coincidence. The nuclear transparency was extracted as the ratio of the measured yield to the yield calculated in the plane wave impulse approximation. Additionally, the transparency of the $1s_{1/2}$ and $1p_{3/2}$ shell protons in $^{12}$C was extracted, and the asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution was examined for hints of the quantum chromodynamics prediction of Color Transparency. All of these results were found to be consistent with traditional nuclear physics and inconsistent with the onset of Color Transparency.

We report a precise measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry $A_{\rm PV}$ in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. We measure $A_{\rm PV} =2668\pm 106\ {\rm (stat)}\pm 40\ {\rm (syst)}$ parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor $F_{\rm W} (q=0.8733$ fm$^{-1}) = 0.1304 \pm 0.0052 \ {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.0020\ {\rm (syst)}$ and the charge minus the weak form factor $F_{\rm ch} - F_{\rm W} = 0.0277\pm 0.0055$. The resulting neutron skin thickness $R_n-R_p=0.121 \pm 0.026\ {\rm (exp)} \pm 0.024\ {\rm (model)}$~fm is relatively thin yet consistent with many model calculations. Despite significant advances in particle imaging technologies over the past two decades, few advances have been made in particle tracking, i.e. linking individual particle positions across time series data. The state-of-the-art tracking algorithm is highly effective for systems in which the particles behave mostly independently. However, these algorithms become inaccurate when particle motion is highly correlated, such as in dense or strongly interacting systems. Accurate particle tracking is essential in the study of the physics of dense colloids, such as the study of dislocation formation, nucleation, and shear transformations. Here, we present a new method for particle tracking that incorporates information about the correlated motion of the particles. We demonstrate significant improvement over the state-of-the-art tracking algorithm in simulated data on highly correlated systems., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We report high-precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable $x_B$. DVCS is sensitive to the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton Form Factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of $x_B$, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes. In particular, the high accuracy of the present data demonstrates sensitivity to some very poorly known CFFs.

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating elastic electron scattering asymmetry on 27Al. The 27Al elastic asymmetry is A_PV = 2.16 +- 0.11 (stat) +- 0.16 (syst) ppm, and was measured at =0.02357 +- 0.0001 GeV^2, = 7.61 +- 0.02 degrees, and = 1.157 GeV with the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab. Predictions using a simple Born approximation as well as more sophisticated distorted-wave calculations are in good agreement with this result. From this asymmetry the 27Al neutron radius R_n = 2.89 +- 0.12 fm was determined using a many-models correlation technique. The corresponding neutron skin thickness R_n-R_p = -0.04 +- 0.12 fm is small, as expected for a light nucleus with a neutron excess of only 1. This result thus serves as a successful benchmark for electroweak determinations of neutron radii on heavier nuclei. A tree-level approach was used to extract the 27Al weak radius R_w = 3.00 +- 0.15 fm, and the weak skin thickness R_wk - R_ch = -0.04 +- 0.15 fm. The weak form factor at this Q^2 is F_wk = 0.39 +- 0.04., Comment: Revised version after referee's comments and suggestions. Low correlation (finite length) sequences are used in communications and remote sensing. One seeks codebooks of sequences in which each sequence has low aperiodic autocorrelation at all nonzero shifts, and each pair of distinct sequences has low aperiodic crosscorrelation at all shifts. An overall criterion of codebook quality is the demerit factor, which normalizes all sequences to unit Euclidean norm, sums the squared magnitudes of all the correlations between every pair of sequences in the codebook (including sequences with themselves to cover autocorrelations), and divides by the square of the number of sequences in the codebook. This demerit factor is expected to be $1+1/N-1/(\ell N)$ for a codebook of $N$ randomly selected binary sequences of length $\ell$, but we want demerit factors much closer to the absolute minimum value of $1$. For each $N$ such that there is an $N\times N$ Hadamard matrix, we use cyclotomy to construct an infinite family of codebooks of binary sequences, in which each codebook has $N-1$ sequences of length $p$, where $p$ runs through the primes with $N\mid p-1$. As $p$ tends to infinity, the demerit factor of the codebooks tends to $1+1/(6(N-1))$, and the maximum magnitude of the undesirable correlations (crosscorrelations between distinct sequences and off-peak autocorrelations) is less than a small constant times $\sqrt{p}\log(p)$.
