Abstract

Many glaciers in the Antarctic Peninsula are now rapidly losing mass. Understanding of the dynamics of these fast-flowing glaciers, and their potential future behaviour, can be improved through ice sheet modelling studies. Inverse methods are commonly used in ice sheet models to infer the spatial distribution of a basal friction coefficient, which has a large effect on the basal velocity and ice deformation. Here we use the full-Stokes Elmer/Ice model to simulate the Wordie Ice Shelf-Fleming Glacier system in the southern Antarctic Peninsula. With an inverse method, we infer the pattern of the basal friction coefficient from surface velocities observed in 2008. We propose a multi-cycle spin-up scheme to reduce the influence of the assumed initial englacial temperature field on the final inversion. This is particularly important for glaciers like the Fleming Glacier, which have areas of strongly temperature-dependent deformational flow in the fast-flowing regions. Sensitivity tests using various bed elevation datasets, ice front positions and boundary conditions demonstrate the importance of high-accuracy ice thickness/bed geometry data and precise location of the ice front boundary..

Abstract

The Wordie Ice Shelf-Fleming Glacier system in the southern Antarctic Peninsula has experienced a long-term retreat and disintegration of its ice shelf in the past 50 years. Increases in the glacier velocity and dynamic thinning have been observed over the past two decades, especially after 2008 when only a small ice shelf remained at the Fleming Glacier front. It is important to know whether the substantial further speed-up and greater surface draw-down of the glacier since 2008 is a direct response to ocean forcing, or driven by feedbacks within the grounded marine-based glacier system, or both. Recent observational studies have suggested the 2008-2015 velocity change was due to the ungrounding of the Fleming Glacier front. To explore the mechanisms underlying the recent changes, we use a full-Stokes ice sheet model to simulate the basal shear stress distribution of the Fleming system in 2008 and 2015. This study is part of the first high resolution modelling campaign of this system. Comparison of inversions for basal shear stresses for 2008 and 2015 suggests the migration of the grounding line ĝ1/4 9 km upstream by 2015 from the 2008 ice front/grounding line positions, which virtually coincided with the 1996 grounding line position. This migration is consistent with the change in floating area deduced from the calculated height above buoyancy in 2015. The retrograde submarine bed underneath the lowest part of the Fleming Glacier may have promoted retreat of the grounding line. Grounding line retreat may also be enhanced by a feedback mechanism upstream of the grounding line by which increased basal lubrication due to increasing frictional heating enhances sliding and thinning. Improved knowledge of bed topography near the grounding line and further transient simulations with oceanic forcing are required to accurately predict the future movement of the Fleming Glacier system grounding line and better understand its ice dynamics and future contribution to sea level..

10. The dynamics of the Amery Ice Shelf from a combination of terrestrial and space geodetic data

Abstract

Understanding and monitoring the changes occurring in the Earth's climate are of increasing interest to scientists, legislators and policy makers, environmentalists and to the wider-population. The Antarctic continent is particularly suitable for studies into climate change, as it is the major geographical region where the climate signature influences the production and storage of water and ice. The outlet glaciers and ice shelves are the most dynamic regions of Antarctica and as such can be expected to respond to variations in the climate signal sooner than the other regions. Unlike the glaciers, which may have response lags of hundreds or thousands of years, the ocean-ice interface of the ice shelves are sensitive to changes in sea level or ocean temperature, resulting in a much faster response times. If an accurate determination of change is to be made, it is of critical importance that baseline (and future) measurements of change and rate of change are of the highest accuracy and precision. The Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system is a major feature of East Antarctica. This study uses a combination of historical-terrestrial and modern-space geodetic measurements to increase our understanding of the dynamics of the Amery Ice Shelf (AIS). Parameters of interest are horizontal and vertical velocity and strain. Vertical ice shelf motion induced by the tides is also of significant interest. The available data spans approximately 30 years, providing an opportunity to test for change in the state of the ice shelf. Continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements that are longer than one day were processed using a segmentation technique for use in tidal studies. Tidal signals are evident as far south as 73¬¨‚àûS, confirming that the southern-most part of the grounding zone is more than 200km to the south of the previously adopted position. Upon analysis, significant north-south amplification is revealed in each of the tidal constituents caused by a reduction in the depth of the water column close to the grounding zone. First-estimates of the height of the water column are made for the southern-most sites based on an analysis of the GPS-derived tidal constituents. Higher order and non-linear tides are evident in the residuals and thus need to be modelled for high accuracy applications. Comparisons were made with three different numerical tidal models with a view to addressing fundamental corrections for future satellite missions, such as ICESat and CryoSat. These missions will require high resolution, accurate tidal models to remove the tidal signals from ice shelf measurements. Significant amounts of in situ tidal measurements (>2 months and up to 1 year) are required for input into the tidal models if these missions are to reach their promised accuracy. To provide sufficient ice shelf tidal measurements, an inexpensive autonomous GPS system was designed to run for periods greater than 8 weeks during the Antarctic summer, yet can be easily modified to make longer term measurements of up to one year. The terrestrial ice shelf surveys of 1968-69 and 1969-70 provide the backbone to the current glaciological understanding of the AIS. This investigation shows that the widely circulated coordinate and velocity results from this survey had significant error. The data are reanalysed using modern least-squares methods and new results provided in a modern, stationary (tide-free), highly precise and accessible International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF96). Coordinate uncertainties (95% confidence level) of the new ITRF solution are generally less than Sm, while the velocity uncertainties are better than 3.7myr‚ÄövÖ¬™¬¨œÄ in magnitude and 0.6¬¨‚àû in flow direction. More recent GPS data, collected from 1988 onwards, were analysed using modern least squares processing techniques in which the results of each field season were held as quasi-observations and then combined in the ITRF97. Velocity uncertainties (95%) are generally less than 3.9myr‚ÄövÖ¬™¬¨œÄ in magnitude and 0.8¬¨‚àû in flow direction. The final velocities (both terrestrial and GPS) were compared to an independent set of velocities derived from sequential Radarsat images, revealing systematic biases in the remote sensing velocity magnitude of ¬¨¬±20-40myr‚ÄövÖ¬™¬¨œÄ and 1-4¬¨‚àû in direction. The combined terrestrial and GPS velocities represent the most comprehensive, consistent and accurate set of velocities from in situ data presently available for the AIS. A congruency test is performed to test the hypothesis that the ice shelf velocity profile is unchanged during the period 1968-1999. This approach provides an overview of both change and rate of change occurring on the Amery Ice Shelf for the first time and hence provides an important contribution with new information on the ice shelf dynamics. The test is shown to fail at the 95% confidence interval for velocity directions and velocity magnitude. While the sample size is small (9 station pairs), the sign of the differences are essentially uniform, with the GPS velocities being less. Consequently, we suggest that the ice shelf may have slowed by 1-5myr‚ÄövÖ¬™¬¨œÄ during the thirty-year period 1968-70 to 1998-99 where velocity comparisons are available. Such a slowing may be a result of changes in one of the other balance forces acting on the Amery Ice Shelf (temperature of the ocean, snow accumulation, ice discharge rate). Strain rate estimates can be deduced through the combination of the terrestrial data and the quasi-observations from the GPS analysis using four dimensional integrated geodesy. Strain rates are determined using both the individual terrestrial and GPS velocities along with an analysis combining the two data sets. This combined strain solution represents the most precise and spatially dense set of strain grids available for the AIS from in situ data. Further strain information is gathered from computing forward and transverse strain rates in the direction of the terrestrial traverse. These results agree with those strain rates computed from Radarsat images. Using a combination of the derived velocities (horizontal and vertical) and strain rates, combined with snow accumulation, surface slope, ice thickness and water and ice density information, melt rates were determined at four GPS locations. The results generally agree with estimates from two numerical ocean circulation models and measurements using velocities and strains derived from Radarsat images, although the precision of the available accumulation measurements limits the precision of the derived melt rates. Accurate ground data plays a vital part in the calibration and validation of remote sensing measurements, especially for radar altimeters (ERS-1/2), laser altimeters (ICESat), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) measurements and the new generation of satellite gravity missions (GOCE/GRACE). What is needed for this to occur is GPS data collected and processed to the highest precision in a consistent reference frame, while longer GPS time series are required to measure and hence correct biases introduced by ice shelf tidal motion. This thesis provides methods and recommendations to achieve these goals. Such calibration/validation activities will undoubtedly play an essential role in the integration of future data and measurements for ice sheet mass balance studies.

Abstract

In order to approximate the underlying process of temporal data, time series prediction has been a hot research topic for decades. Developing predictive models plays an important role in interpreting complex real-world elements. With the sharp increase in the quantity and dimensionality of data, new challenges, such as extracting deep features and recognizing deep latent patterns, have emerged, demanding novel approaches and effective solutions. Deep learning, composed of multiple processing layers to learn with multiple levels of abstraction, is, now, commonly deployed for overcoming the newly arisen difficulties. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art developments in deep learning for time series prediction. Based on modeling for the perspective of conditional or joint probability, we categorize them into discriminative, generative, and hybrids models. Experiments are implemented on both benchmarks and real-world data to elaborate the performance of the representative deep learning-based prediction methods. Finally, we conclude with comments on possible future perspectives and ongoing challenges with time series prediction.

Abstract

Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a closed-loop computerised physician order entry (CPOE) system on prescribing in a general paediatric unit in Hong Kong. We studied the effect of the CPOE system on medication prescribing error and the characteristics of these errors before and after the implementation of the system. Methods This was a single-site, prospective, observational study at a public hospital’s general paediatric unit in Hong Kong, conducted during the pre- and post-implementation of the system from March to April 2019 and 2020, respectively. Collected data included the number of medication orders processed, the number of prescribing errors identified, and the characteristics of errors, such as the severity, children’s age group, drug formulation, and drug class. Key Findings The prescribing error rate was significantly reduced from 6.7% to 3.9% after CPOE implementation. The causes of prescribing errors were found to be significantly different, as the implementation eradicated handwriting-related errors and reduced dosage selection-related errors. However, we found that CPOE increased other causes of error, such as missing entry of patient information that might affect the dispensing process, thus delaying patients in receiving their medications on time. Conclusion The CPOE system significantly reduced prescribing errors and altered some of the characteristics of these errors. Poor system design or inadequate user training could result in the creation of new causes of error.

13. Virtualized Gamified Pharmacy Simulation during COVID-19

Abstract

Extended and immersive gamified pharmacy simulation has been demonstrated to provide transformative learning in pharmacy education, preparing graduates for real-world practice. An international consortium of universities has implemented local adaptations of the Pharmacy Game into their curricula. From early 2020, pharmacy academics modified the delivery of gamified simulation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while still aiming to deliver the important learning outcomes of enhanced communication, collaboration, confidence and competence. Australian universities went into full lockdown from March 2020, and the critical gamified simulation at Griffith University was delivered entirely virtually in 2020. An array of synchronous and asynchronous approaches and software platforms was employed, including Microsoft Teams, Forms and Stream plus the online interview platform Big Interview. These allowed for the simulation activities, including dispensing, counselling and clinical cases, to be conducted by students online. In 2021, Griffith University conducted hybrid delivery of its Pharmacy Game, balancing student participation both in person and online. Microsoft Power Apps was added to the hosting platform to enhance the simulation interface, and Power Virtual Agent artificial intelligence chatbots, with natural language processing, were used to enable asynchronous clinical interaction. The combination of learning technologies provided the means to deliver successful gamified simulation in the virtual and hybrid environments while still achieving outstanding learning outcomes from the capstone activity. This paper details the technologies used to virtualize the Australian Pharmacy Game and the analytics available to educators to assess student participation, engagement and performance.

Abstract

The quality and consistency of the components manufactured by Automated Fibre Placement are dependent on multiple process parameters and their interactions. In order to capture the required data, multiple data collection systems are used which output data in different formats, frequencies and reference systems. This results in a long process with manual steps, which can be error-prone and time consuming, taking as much as 60-70% of the total engineering effort. This study implements a data collection and visualisation platform designed to unify and automate data capture from multiple sources and facilitate the deployment of ML models. As a demonstration of the platform, multiple components of complex and varying geometry are manufactured at the National Composites Centre, UK. A number of process parameters, including compaction force, surface temperature and lay-up speed, are measured continuously and are used to train and deploy machine learning models with the aid of the smart platform. Data is visualised and a ply-wise neural networks-based model is developed, achieving accuracies of up to R2 = 0.80; demonstrating that the data-driven approach is scalable to complex geometries.

Process variable distributions are visualised, and the data is processed into datasets which can be used to train process models.

Abstract

Background Fear of treatment of asthma is common amongst patients and their carers, and often leads to poor disease control and poor quality of life. Some carers preferred the use of complementary or alternative medicine, such as Chinese herbal medicine or supplement, to inhaled medications. Objectives This paper aims to describe the perception of parents with asthmatic children on inhaler treatment and smoking at home. Methods The clinical trial was carried out at an acute respiratory Paediatric unit in a public hospital in Hong Kong. The proposal of the clinical trial was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, World Health Organization Organisation (ChiCTR1800019706) and was approval from the Ethic Committee review board was obtained parental consents were obtained. Fifty-six children aged 4–11 years were admitted to an acute paediatric unit for asthmatic attack during the study period from Oct 2018 to Jun 2019. Their parents were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview using open-ended questions, guided by several themes. The interview lasted 15 to 20 minutes. Content analysis was used to analyze the data collected from the interviews. All transcriptions were undertaken by the same investigator. Results Four aspects were concluded. Doubt about asthma diagnosis. According to the most updated concept, asthma is considered an allergic disease that can be controlled without primary symptoms, such as repeated coughing, wheezing and breathing difficulties. However, many parents perceived asthma as a different entity from allergic airway. Some were unable to differentiate between asthmatic attack, upper respiratory tract infection and wheezing in pneumonia. With these misconceptions, parents would doubt the diagnosis of asthma and would default follow-up eventually. Steroid phobia. Many parents expressed their concern on the adverse effects of corticosteroids on their children, especially for those who started treatment at an older age. They were worried that inhaled corticosteroids would do more harm than good. One parent even used the term ‘steroid abuse’ when referring to the regular use of steroid. Another parent had fear of oral ulcer development as a side effect of corticosteroid. Perception on inhaler. There were several misconceptions on inhaler medications. Some parents perceived the long term use of bronchodilator would lead to asthma or persist the asthma symptoms. Some thought nebulizing medications were more effective than delivering medications via inhalers. Smoking at home. Some parents believed indirect exposure to tobacco smoke at home would not affect the control of asthma in their children. Parents understood the harm of smoking at home but expressed their difficulty in asking the elder family member living with child to quit smoking. Conclusions These qualitative data highlight the communication problem between healthcare professionals and patients and the misconceptions of asthma management. Firstly, the updated concept on allergic diseases such as asthma, was not well-publicized. Many parents could not accept their children being diagnosed with asthma, although they themselves had asthma or other allergic disease during their childhood. Furthermore, the concept of controlled asthma used by healthcare professionals and parents are often different. Lastly, third-hand smoking is a commonly overlooked issue.

Abstract

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

20. Integration of an extended, immersive, gamified pharmacy simulation as a capstone event

Abstract

Introduction: A gamified simulation was integrated as a capstone event for a new Australian undergraduate pharmacy programme. It aimed to consolidate previous learning and deliver an authentic activity aligned with self-determination theory to develop students’ professional identity and enhance their competence, confidence, and collaborative skills. Description: A full-environment immersive simulation was constructed in which teams of final-year pharmacy students competitively managed their own virtual pharmacies over an extended period. Gamification of the simulation aimed to enhance student motivation and engagement while recognising the consequences of clinical and professional decision-making. Evaluation: Four years of gamified simulation encouraged outstanding student attendance and engagement. The quantitative evaluation revealed high student satisfaction (mean 4.7 out of 5) of the host courses, while the qualitative evaluation revealed that intended outcomes were met through the delivery of authentic, consolidated learning and enhancement of student confidence and professional identity. Conclusion: An extended, gamified simulation may provide a transformative learning event.

21. Experiential Learning in a Gamified Pharmacy Simulation: A Qualitative Exploration Guided by Semantic Analysis

Abstract

Experiential learning is an important component of pharmacist education and is primarily achieved through supervised placement or simulation. This study explored senior pharmacy students’ experiential learning in an extended, immersive, gamified simulation, conducted as a capstone learning activity toward the end of their final year of study, consolidating all prior learning and preparing students for intern practice. The simulation aimed to enhance student confidence, competence and collaboration. The three-week activity involved student teams competitively managing simulated pharmacies, assuming the role of pharmacists to complete all scaffolded assessments, including dispensing prescriptions, clinical cases, verbal counselling, simulated patient cases, interprofessional collaboration, and assignments. Assessments were marked continuously, with consequences of practice acknowledged through gain or loss of ‘patients’ for the pharmacy. From 2016 to 2018, 123 students completed multiple individual reflective journals (n = 733). Reflective journals were analyzed to explore the student experience, using a mixed methods approach. Initial Leximancer® 4.51 semantic analysis guided thematic analysis, conducted in NVivo® 12. The major themes that emerged were teamwork, patient-centeredness, medicines provision, future practice, and the learning experience. Student participants reported an intense and emotional experience in the gamified simulation, with many students revealing transformation in their skills, behaviors and attitudes over its duration.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic required pharmacy educators to seek creative and innovative ways of delivering learning outcomes in the virtual environment. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) have been particularly challenging to deliver online.Objective: To explore the use of asynchronous video interview software as a platform for virtual OSCEs in pharmacy education, and for conducting brief structured research interviews.Method: Fourth year Bachelor of Pharmacy students at an Australian university, were interviewed via asynchronous video interview software (Big Interview) about their perceptions of using the platform for virtual OSCEs.Results: 37 students (92.5%) used Big Interview to complete at least one summative OSCE case during a team-based simulation. Seven research interviews were recorded by six students. Positive comments focussed on facilitation of self-reflection and self-correction in patient questioning and counselling. Negative views concerned the lack of authenticity, including the robotic and artificial nature of interactions.Conclusion: Asynchronous video interview software for pharmacy OSCEs may assist formative learning and self-reflection, offering an adjunct to, but not replacement of, in-person communication

Abstract

There are limited treatment options and no consensus on the management of advanced rare ovarian malignancies. Rare ovarian malignancies can present with peritoneal metastases (PM), featuring a similar presentation to more common ovarian subtypes. Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is an effective treatment for PM of non-gynecologic origin and, recently, epithelial ovarian cancer. We evaluated the feasibility of CRS/HIPEC in the management of PM from rare ovarian malignancies and report postoperative outcomes on these patients.

Abstract

The problem of detecting nonstationary disturbances in a pipeline is demonstrated using a predictive framework based on high spatial resolution fiber-optic acoustic sensors. We show that the root-mean-square (RMS) acoustic power is related to flow and density changes in the fluid. However, in practice, fluid parameters are not known at the resolution of the acoustics. In an experimental study, we trained long-short-term memory (LSTM) networks to exploit hidden patterns in an acoustic time series to predict the RMS acoustic power. We found LSTM perform efficiently and shows improvement over baseline neural network predictor, and its strength lies in discriminating sequential order from spatial input data. The system is verified on 25 m resolution fiber-optic acoustic data. Results show promise in predicting anomalous disturbances despite unknown pipe and fluid parameters..

26. The impact of computerised physician order entry on prescribing in general paediatric units in Hong Kong.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a closed-loop computerised physician order entry (CPOE) system on prescribing in a general paediatric unit in Hong Kong. We studied the effect of the CPOE system on medication prescribing error and the characteristics of these errors before and after the implementation of the system. Methods: This was a single-site, prospective, observational study at a public hospital's general paediatric unit in Hong Kong, conducted during the pre- and post-implementation of the system from March to April 2019 and 2020, respectively. Collected data included the number of medication orders processed, the number of prescribing errors identified, and the characteristics of errors, such as the severity, children's age group, drug formulation, and drug class. Key findings: The prescribing error rate was significantly reduced from 6.7% to 3.9% after CPOE implementation. The causes of prescribing errors were found to be significantly different, as the implementation eradicated handwriting-related errors and reduced dosage selection-related errors. However, we found that CPOE increased other causes of error, such as missing entry of patient information that might affect the dispensing process, thus delaying patients in receiving their medications on time. Conclusion The CPOE system significantly reduced prescribing errors and altered some of the characteristics of these errors. Abstract

Detecting anomalies is important for continuous monitoring of sensor systems. One significant challenge is to use sensor data and autonomously detect changes that cause different conditions to occur. Using deep learning methods, we are able to monitor and detect changes as a result of some disturbance in the system. We utilize deep neural networks for sequence analysis of time series. We use a multi-step method for anomaly detection. We train the network to learn spectral and temporal features from the acoustic time series. We test our method using fiber-optic acoustic data from a pipeline.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the geometric, gravimetric, aerodynamic, and frictional properties of maize grain as affected by varietal differences and moisture content. Honampa, Omankwa, Abontem, Timtim, and Obatanpa were the five maize grain varieties studied. Moisture content, geometric properties, gravimetric properties, aerodynamic properties, and frictional properties were studied. The geometric mean diameters ranged between 6.65 and 7.55 mm, while projected areas ranged between 52.98 and 73.12 m2. The surface area was between 139.69 and 180.29 mm2, and sphericity was from 0.71 to 0.80. The following ranges were obtained as thousand grain weight (213.74 and 292.89 g), and bulk density (709.50 and 746.00 kg/m3). The volume of a single seed was between 1.71 × 10−7 and 2.34 × 10−7 m3 while true density was 1250.0 kg/m3. Porosity ranged from 40.32% to 43.24% and terminal velocity ranged between 2.12 and 2.98 m/s. Drag coefficient of 7.18 to 14.60, drag force of 0.002 to 0.003, and Reynolds number between 992.71 and 1579.20 were similarly obtained. The static angle of repose varied with material surfaces while the dynamic angle of repose varied with grain variety. The grain demonstrated 19° static angle of repose, which portrays a very free flow. All the geometric properties increased with moisture besides sphericity although insignificant. The thousand grain weight, volume of single grain, and porosity increased with moisture content. Nonetheless, bulk density decreased and true density remained the same as moisture content increased. Abstract

This study determines whether maximal voluntary ankle plantar flexor torque could be more accurately represented using a torque generator that is a function of both knee and ankle kinematics. Iso velocity and isometric ankle plantar flexor torques were measured on a single participant for knee joint angles of 111° to 169° (approximately full extension) using a Contrex M J dynamometer. Maximal voluntary torque was represented by a 19-parameter two-joint function of ankle and knee joint angles and angular velocities with the parameters determined by minimizing a weighted root mean square difference between measured torques and the two-joint function. The weighted root mean square difference between the two-joint function and the measured torques was 10 N-m or 3% of maximum torque. The two-joint function was a more accurate representation of maximal voluntary ankle plantar flexor torques than an existing single-joint function where differences of 19% of maximum torque were found. It is concluded that when the knee is flexed by more than 40°, a two-joint representation is necessary.

Abstract

Samples of Vitex doniana fruit (black plum) were collected from Vunchi village in Bida metropolis. The dried endocarp was washed, ground into powder and analysed for the proximate, vitamins and mineral compositions. The values (%DW) of moisture, ash, crude protein, crude fibre, crude fat and carbohydrate available were 16.66, 11.50, 8.24, 0.58, 34.62 and 28.40, respectively. Levels of Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and C were 0.27, 18.33, 4.80, 20.45 and 35.58 (mg/100g DW) respectively. Mineral (mg/100g DW) were: potassium (16.5), sodium (10.40), calcium (30.27), iron (5.20), Copper (2.70), magnesium (20.10) and phosphorus (16.50). The result indicates that Vitex doniana fruit pulp could be promoted as: carbohydrate and lipid supplements for cereal-based diets in rural communities, another cheaper source of raw material for juice production, fortified into feed of ruminants, while its moderate calcium value could be used for the management of oesteomalacia.

Abstract

The archaeological site of the Domus Romana in Rabat, Malta was excavated almost 100 years ago yielding artefacts from the various phases of the site. The Melite Civitas Romana project was designed to investigate the domus, which may have been the home of a Roman Senator, and its many phases of use. Pending planned archaeological excavations designed to investigate the various phases of the site, a team from the Institute for Digital Exploration from the University of South Florida carried out a digitization campaign in the summer of 2019 using terrestrial laser scanning and aerial digital photogrammetry to document the current state of the site to provide a baseline of documentation and plan the coming excavations. In parallel, structured light scanning and photogrammetry were used to digitize 128 artefacts in the museum of the Domus Romana to aid in off-site research and create a virtual museum platform for global dissemination.

37. Accuracy assessment of ocean tide models around Antarctica

Abstract

Accurate ocean tide models for the circum-Antarctic seas are required to remove unwanted signals from floating ice elevation and space-borne, time-variable gravity measurements ( e. g., GRACE). We present accuracy assessments for several global ( CSR4, FES2004, FES99, GOT00.2, NAO. 99b, TPXO6.2) and Antarctic (CADA00.10 and CATS02.01) ocean tide models using coastal and pelagic tide gauges, gravimetric data and GPS records of ice shelf surface elevation. The accuracies of CSR4 and NAO. 99b are poor in the ice shelf regions. The optimum model for the entire circum-Antarctic seas is TPXO6.2, with a root-mean-square deviation of similar to 5 - 7 cm, similar to 40% lower than the next best model, FES2004. The main exception is the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf where CADA00.10 and CATS02.01 most accurately represent observations from two sites near the Rutford Ice Stream grounding line.

Vulval basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are an important differential diagnosis of painful, itchy vulval lesions, which can occur at all ages but commonly affect women in their senium. BCC tend to grow locally in an invasive and destructive pattern and seldom metastasize. Here we describe the rare case of inguinal metastasis in a 70-year-old woman with vulval BCC who was treated with radical hemivulvectomy, bilateral inguinal node sampling and adjuvant external beam radiotherapy. We discuss the clinical management of vulval BCC and provide an overview of the previously reported cases in the literature.

By comparing Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) and Baudrillard through the lens of a study of the notion of withdrawal in Heidegger’s tool analysis and “The Question Concerning Technology”, this article explores the extent to which an Object-Oriented Baudrillard is possible, or even necessary. Considering an OOO understanding of Mauss’s gift-exchange, a possible critique of duomining in Baudrillard and a revision of Baudrillard’s understanding of art, the prospects of a new reading of Baudrillard and interpretation of OOO’s genealogy are established. These lines of comparison qualify the role of withdrawal in Baudrillard and symbolic exchange for OOO, and lead towards the conclusion that an Object-Oriented Baudrillard is possible, but may not, conversely, be considered necessary.

Abstract

A 25-year-old patient treated for relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) with natalizumab had a rapid progression of a low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion to a FIGO stage 1B1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix within 2 years. She was treated with radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy and subsequently developed a vault recurrence within 2 years. The recurrence was treated with definitive synchronous chemo-radiotherapy and she has been disease free for 7 years. This case and existing evidence on increased risk of developing cervical dysplasia under natalizumab show that MS patients under immunosuppressive therapy require close annual cervical screening with immediate investigation of abnormal test results.
