Research data and software rely heavily on the technical and social infrastructure to disseminate, cultivate, and coordinate projects, priorities, and activities. The groups that have stepped forward to support these activities are often segmented by aspects of their identity - facets like discipline, for-profit versus academic orientation, and others. Siloes across the data and software publishing communities are even more splintered into those that are driven by altruism and collective advance

This seminar is part of a series to provide societies and their journals with information and resources to help their communities be more knowledgeable and prepared to share data (and software) in a way that is relevant and meaningful for each discipline. This is a 12-month series. Following the planned presentation, participants will have ~30 minutes of Q&A and discussion specific to society engagement to improve data sharing, credit, and transparency. This workshop is part of a series focused on editors of Earth, space, and environmental journals and other COPDESS stakeholders that focuses on relevant developments in data and software. COPDESS Workshop Co-Chairs: Danie Kinkade, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Lesley Wyborn, National Computational Infrastructure Shelley Stall, American Geophysical Union Objective:Discuss the detailed workflow between the journal, author, and repository that identifies the activities necessary for both processes to move forward in a more coordinated way. The co-chairs will share the current progress on the use case where data are submitted for preservation at or near the same time as the paper is submitted to a journal that will cite the data. The co-chairs seek feedback from both journal and repository communities that will lead to recommendations for better transparency and coordination across both processes. This presentation, originally given during a webinar on February 19th, 2021, provides an overview of plenary and breakout sessions from the 2021 Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Winter Meeting held online (January 26th-29th, 2021).

Through multiple international/national efforts, Earth, space, and environmental science communities are developing both general and domain-specific leading practices for data management, infrastructure development, vocabularies, and common data/digital services. The ESIP/RDA ESES-IG works towards coordinating and harmonizing these efforts to reduce possible duplication, increase efficiency, share use cases, and promote partnerships in the community. The ESES-IG offers an opportunity for any ESIP Cluster/Working Group to expose their work to a wider international audience and seek additional feedback. This poster was presented at the 2021 Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Summer Meeting held virtually in July 2021.

Frictionless Data Processing in the Wild Presentation at csv,conf,v4 (https://csvconf.com/) May 8th, 2019 10:30 AM PDT. Frictionless Data (FD) initiatives out of the Open Knowledge Foundationprovideattractive informatics and processing capabilities. The BCO-DMO data repository used FD tools on real-world datasets, and we have some lessons learned to share. By building upon existing FD tools, we found ways to reduce the amount of time data managers spend generating metadata, and writing custom scripts. We are also developing ways for data managers with varying levels of scripting ability to make use of Frictionless Data tools.

EarthCube Council of Data Facilities: Enabling Advanced Cyberinfrastructure for Integrative Science was presented at the ORCID Consortia Workshop on May 20-21, 2019.

Well-founded data management systems are of vital importance for ocean observing systems as they ensure that essential data are not only collected but also retained and made accessible for analysis and application by current and future users. Effective data management requires collaboration across activities including observations, metadata and data assembly, quality assurance and control (QA/QC), and data publication that enables local and interoperable discovery and access and secures archiving that guarantees long-term preservation. To achieve this, data should be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). Here, we outline how these principles apply to ocean data and illustrate them with a few examples. In recent decades, ocean data managers, in close collaboration with international organizations, have played an active role in the improvement of environmental data standardization, accessibility, and interoperability through different projects, enhancing access to observation data at all stages of the data life cycle and fostering the development of integrated services targeted to research, regulatory, and operational users. As ocean observing systems evolve and an increasing number of autonomous platforms and sensors are deployed, the volume and variety of data increase dramatically. For instance, there are more than 70 data catalogs that contain metadata records for the polar oceans, a situation that makes comprehensive data discovery beyond the capacity of most researchers. To better serve research, operational, and commercial users, more efficient turnaround of quality data in known formats and made available through Web services is necessary. In particular, automation of data workflows will be critical to reduce friction throughout the data value chain. Adhering to the FAIR principles with free, timely, and unrestricted access to ocean observation data is beneficial for the originators, has obvious benefits for users, and is an essential foundation for the development of new services made possible with big data technologies. publishedVersion
