Objectives: Older adults underutilize mental healthcare, and ageism as a potential barrier has been under-researched. As ageism comes both from external sources and is internalized by older adults, we examined the prevalence of external and internalized ageist barriers to help-seeking and how depressive and anxiety symptoms differed based on how strongly older adults endorsed these ageist barriers., Methods: A sample of 247 older adults completed measures online to assess barriers to mental healthcare (BMHSS-R), depressive symptoms (CES-D), and anxiety symptoms (GAD-7)., Results: Barriers representing internalized ageist stereotypes about older adult mental health were endorsed more frequently than external ageist barriers. Older adults endorsing ageist barriers to care reported significantly more depressive and anxiety symptoms than those not endorsing these barriers., Conclusions: Ageism, particularly internalized beliefs that poor mental health is typical in older adulthood, was reflected in older adults' perceptions of barriers to seeking mental healthcare. Both internalized and external ageist barriers to care negatively influence well-being., Clinical Implication: To support older adult mental health, clinicians should dispel inaccurate, ageist stereotypes about older adult mental health internalized by their clients and work to increase and then communicate their openness and ability to provide competent mental healthcare to older adults.

The cause, or causes, of the Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions have been difficult to establish, in part because poor spatiotemporal resolution in the fossil record hinders alignment of species disappearances with archeological and environmental data. We obtained 172 new radiocarbon dates on megafauna from Rancho La Brea in California spanning 15.6 to 10.0 thousand calendar years before present (ka). Seven species of extinct megafauna disappeared by 12.9 ka, before the onset of the Younger Dryas. Comparison with high-resolution regional datasets revealed that these disappearances coincided with an ecological state shift that followed aridification and vegetation changes during the Bølling-Allerød (14.69 to 12.89 ka). Time-series modeling implicates large-scale fires as the primary cause of the extirpations, and the catalyst of this state shift may have been mounting human impacts in a drying, warming, and increasingly fire-prone ecosystem.

Red algae, belonging to the phylum Rhodophyta, contain an abundance of useful chemicals including bioactive molecules and present opportunities for the production of different products through biorefinery cascades. The rhodophyte Palmaria palmata , commonly termed dulse or dillisk, grows predominantly on the northern coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and is a well-known snack food. Due to its abundance, availability and cultivation capacity, P. palmata was selected for study as a potential candidate for a biorefinery process. In addition to studying juice and solid fractions of freshly harvested P. palmata , we have investigated the novel possibility of preserving algal biomass by ensilaging protocols similar to those employed for terrestrial forage crops. In the metabolite partitioning within the solid and liquid fractions following screw-pressing, the majority of the metabolites screened for-water soluble carbohydrates, proteins and amino acids, lipids, pigments, phenolics and antioxidant activity-remained in the solid fraction, though at differing proportions depending on the metabolite, from 70.8% soluble amino acids to 98.2% chlorophyll a and 98.1% total carotenoids. For the ensiling study, screw-pressed P. palmata , with comparative wilted and chopped, and chopped only samples, were ensiled at scale with and without Safesil silage additive. All samples were successfully ensiled after 90 days, with screw-pressing giving lower or equal pH before and after ensiling compared with the other preparations. Of particular note was the effluent volumes generated during ensiling: 26-49% of the fresh weight, containing 16-34% of the silage dry matter. Pyrolysis char residues from ensiled macroalgae were examined to determine their potential as growth promoters on germinating and transplanted seedlings. Macroalgae was harvested in May, July and August from beach collections, containing predominantly Laminaria digitata and Laminaria hyperborea ; naturally seeded mussel lines dominated by Saccharina latissima ; and lines seeded with cultivated L. digitata . Material was ensiled, pressed to pellets and underwent pyrolysis using a thermo-catalytic reforming (TCR) process, with and without additional steam. The chars generated were then assessed through proximate and ultimate analysis. Seasonal changes had the prevalent impact on char composition, though using mixed beach-harvested material gave a greater variability in elements than when using the offshore collections. Applying the char at 5% (v/v)/2% (w/w) into germination or seedling soils was universally negative for the plants, inhibiting or delaying all parameters assessed with no clear advantage in harvesting date, species or TCR processing methodology. In germinating lettuce seeds, soil containing the pyrolysis chars caused a longer germination time, poorer germination, fewer true leaves to be produced, a lower average plant health score and a lower final biomass yield. For transplanted ryegrass seedlings, there were lower plant survival rates, with surviving plants producing fewer leaves and tillers, lower biomass yields when cut and less regrowth after cutting. As water from the char-contained plant pots inhibited the lettuce char control, one further observation was that run-off water from the pyrolysis char released compounds which detrimentally affected cultivated plant growth. This study clearly shows that pyrolysed macroalgae char does not fit the standard assumption that chars can be used as soil amendments at 2% (w/w) addition levels. Determining stability constants of uranyl complexes with the principal functional groups in siderophores and identifying stability series is of great importance to predict which siderophore classes preferentially bind to U VI and, hence, impact uranium speciation in the environment. It also helps to develop resins for scavenging U VI from aqueous solutions. Here, we apply a recently developed computational approach to calculate log β values for a set of geochemically relevant uranium organometallic complexes using Density Functional Theory (DFT). We determined the stability series for catecholate, hydroxamate, α-hydroxycarboxylate, α-aminocarboxylate, hydroxy-phenyloxazolonate, and α-hydroxyimidazole with the uranyl cation. In this work, the stability constants (log β 110 ) of α-hydroxyimidazolate and hydroxy-phenyloxazolonate are calculated for the first time. Our approach employed the B3LYP density functional approximation, aug-cc-pVDZ basis set for ligand atoms, MDF60 ECP for U VI , and the IEFPCM solvation model. DFT calculated log β 110 were corrected using a previously established fitting equation. We find that the siderophore functional groups stability decreases in the order: α-hydroxycarboxylate bound via the α-hydroxy and carboxylate groups (log β 110 = 17.08), α-hydroxyimidazolate (log β 110 = 16.55), catecholate (log β 110 = 16.43), hydroxamate (log β 110 = 9.00), hydroxy-phenyloxazolonate (log β 110 = 8.43), α-hydroxycarboxylate bound via the carboxylate group (log β 110 = 7.51) and α-aminocarboxylate (log β 110 = 4.73). We confirm that the stability for the binding mode of the functional groups decrease in the order: bidentate, monodentate via ligand O atoms, and monodentate via ligand N atoms. The stability series strongly suggests that α-hydroxyimidazolate is an important functional group that needs to be included when assessing uranyl mobility and removal from aqueous solutions.

Research was undertaken to ascertain the effect on biogas potential during the anaerobic digestion of chicken manure containing Staphylococcus aureus and chlortetracycline (antibiotic) from infected chicken flocks. S. aureus is a pathogenic bacteria in chicken flocks that is usually treated with the broad-spectrum antibiotic, chlortetracycline. Veterinary antibiotics are often prescribed in the poultry sector for on-farm use at the flock level to control disease; consequently, significant quantities of antibiotics are excreted from the bird into the manure. Subsequent anaerobic digestion of this chicken manure could lead to pathogens and antibiotics affecting the digestion process. Anaerobic digestion biochemical methane potential assays were completed at 35°C for 39 days, with some assays receiving S. aureus and some receiving S. aureus and chlortetracycline. No viable S. aureus cells were detected after Day 0 of the experiment. A further experiment utilising an order of magnitude greater concentration of S. aureus demonstrated a significant reduction (>400 fold) in S. aureus within 24 h when inoculated into anaerobic digestate, with no viable S. aureus cells detected by the end of 3 days. Furthermore, the efficacy of chlortetracycline was significantly reduced when applied to anaerobic digestate compared to water alone. Total biogas yields from chicken manure were significantly lowered by the addition of S. aureus , with and without chlortetracycline. However, there was no significant difference in methane yields between treatments. The cellulose control assays showed a lag phase in methane production after receiving chlortetracycline. In comparison, the absence of a lag phase when the antibiotic were added to chicken manure may have been due to the relatively high nitrogen content of the feedstock reducing the inhibition of chlortetracycline on methanogens. Agricultural activity, urban development and habitat alteration have caused the disappearance of the western spadefoot (Spea hammondii) from 80% of its geographic range in southern California. Despite the western spadefoot's continuing decline, little research has been conducted on its natural history. The home range of adult spadefoots is unknown, and their use of upland habitat is poorly understood. Both factors are important for the long-term conservation of the species because adult spadefoots spend the majority of their lives away from breeding pools in self-excavated burrows. Between January 2012 and January 2013, we surgically implanted radio transmitters in 15 spadefoots at two locations and recorded their movements and habitat use. The mean distance moved between burrow locations was 18 m (SD ± 24.1 m, range1-204 m). The mean distance of burrows from the breeding pools was 40 m (SD ± 37.42 m, range 1-262 m). Rain was a significant predictor of spadefoot movement, with more rain predicting higher probability of movement and larger distances moved. At remote sensing scale (1 m) spadefoots selected grassland habitat for their burrow locations. At the microsite scale (< 1 m) spadefoots strongly selected duff over grass or shrub cover. Spadefoots burrowed in friable, sandy/loam soil with significantly less clay than random pseudoabsence points. This research enhances our understanding of a little-studied species and will contribute to the development of effective management plans for the western spadefoot., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Uranium (U VI ) interacts with organic ligands, subsequently controlling its aqueous chemistry. It is therefore imperative to assess the binding ability of natural organic molecules. We evidence that density functional theory (DFT) can be used as a practical protocol for predicting the stability of U VI organic ligand complexes, allowing for the development of a relative stability series for organic complexes with limited experimental data. Solvation methods and DFT settings were benchmarked to suggest a suitable off-the-shelf solution. The results indicate that the IEFPCM solvation method should be employed. A mixed solvation approach improves the accuracy of the calculated stability constant (log β); however, the calculated log β are approximately five times more favorable than experimental data. Different basis sets, functionals, and effective core potentials were tested to check that there were no major changes in molecular geometries and Δ r G. The recommended method employed is the B3LYP functional, aug-cc-pVDZ basis set for ligands, MDF60 ECP and basis set for U VI , and the IEFPCM solvation model. Using the fitting approach employed in the literature with these updated DFT settings allows fitting of 1:1 U VI complexes with root-mean-square deviation of 1.38 log β units. Fitting multiple bound carboxylate ligands indicates a second, separate fitting for 1:2 and 1:3 complexes.

Anaerobic digestion was investigated as a potential method for on-farm disposal of fallen stock (pig carcases), degrading the carcase material to produce biogas and digestate. The effects of feedstock (sugar beet pulp or pig carcase material or a 50:50 mix) and organic loading rate (50 g-TS L -1 or 100 g-TS L -1 ), during mesophilic (35 °C) anaerobic digestion were investigated. Anaerobic digestion was achieved for all experimental treatments, however the pig carcase material at the higher organic loading rate produced the second highest methane yield (0.56 Nm 3 kg-VS -1 versus a range of 0.14-0.58 Nm 3 kg-VS -1 for other treatments), with the highest percentage of methane in total biogas (61.6% versus a range of 36.1-55.2% for all other treatments). Satisfactory pathogen reduction is a legislative requirement for disposal of carcase material. Pathogens were quantified throughout the anaerobic digestion process. Enterococcus faecalis concentrations decreased to negligible levels (2.8 log 10 CFU g-TS -1 ), whilst Clostridium perfringens levels remained unaffected by treatment throughout the digestion process (5.3 ± 0.2 log 10 CFU g-TS -1 )., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Benzodiazepines (BDPs) are widely used drugs that are effective in controlling the symptoms of anxiety. Tolerance develops rapidly to some of the effects but not to anxiolytic effect in most patients. Dependence occurs at usual therapeutic doses and in a small proportion of patients is accompanied by an enormous increase in the dose taken. The majority of subjects using very high doses are dependent on other substances concurrently. On discontinuing BDPs patients may suffer from relapse of the original condition, rebound in the severity of the symptoms of the original condition or the onset of new symptoms in an abstinence syndrome. If BDPs are discontinued abruptly there may be severe consequences such as seizures. With tapering of the dose, even if this is rapid and from high dose, high potency BDP, the subject will probably experience considerable discomfort but rarely life-threatening effects. Whilst there is concern that BDPs are used too freely, the conditions treated are accompanied by significant morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of pure BDP dependence is low and it is still a matter of debate as to how often BDPs should be prescribed, for which conditions and for what length of time.
