In this paper, we report on a crystal based x-ray imaging system fielded at the OMEGA EP laser facility. This new system has a pointing accuracy of +/100 μm, a temporal resolution down to 100 ps (depending on backlighter characteristics), variable magnification, and a spatial resolution of 21.9 µm at the object plane at a magnification of 15×. The system is designed to use a crystal along the crystal plane that satisfies the Bragg condition for the x ray of interest. The thin crystal is then bent into a spherical geometry and attached to a glass backing substrate to hold it in the diagnostic, and the x rays are imaged onto a charge coupled device. We report on data acquired with the new Los Alamos National Laboratory supplied spherical quartz crystal to image the Mn He-α 6.15 keV line emission.

We acquired high resolution images of laser driven cylindrical implosion experiments using a Fresnel zone plate (FZP), a diffraction driven lens composed of alternating opaque and transparent rings, on the OMEGA laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics in Rochester, NY, USA. Our FZP geometrical properties were designed for a standard 25x magnification and include 700 zones of 900 nm thick gold, minimum zone width of 40 nm, and a lens radius of 56 μm to focus an energy spectral peak at 6.127 keV emitted from a Manganese backlighter. This design was informed by our new Python-implemented forward model that considers 4 diffractive orders and a realistic x-ray spectrum to characterize the spatial resolution of FZP systems. The model supports two methods of exploring FZP designs: optimization via the SciPy library and algorithmic differentiation via the PyTorch library and its neural network module.

We will discuss our recent work performing high-resolution (E/ΔE > 5000) X-ray spectroscopy of copper K-shell emission from high-intensity (I ∼10 21 W/cm 2 ) laser experiments using the ALEPH 400 nm laser at Colorado State University. Through measurements of front- and rear-side K-shell fluorescence and hot electron emission, we examine the generation and propagation of energetic electrons in thin foil and layered targets to elucidate the physics of ultra high-intensity, laser-solid interactions and the existence of temperature gradients in heated materials.

A European consortium of 15 laboratories across nine nations have worked together under the EUROFusion Enabling Research grants for the past decade with three principle objectives. These are: (a) investigating obstacles to ignition on megaJoule-class laser facilities; (b) investigating novel alternative approaches to ignition, including basic studies for fast ignition (both electron and ion-driven), auxiliary heating, shock ignition, etc.; and (c) developing technologies that will be required in the future for a fusion reactor. A brief overview of these activities, presented here, along with new calculations relates the concept of auxiliary heating of inertial fusion targets, and provides possible future directions of research and development for the updated European Roadmap that is due at the end of 2020. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘Prospects for high gain inertial fusion energy (part 2)’.

In this work, we present results from experiments capable of producing and measuring the propagation of multiple successive, copropagating shocks across an unstable planar interface, where the shocks are independently driven and separately controllable, enabling the study of this important phenomenon. Copropagating shocks play a significant role in a wide range of systems involving stratified media subject to a shock, and exhibit different physical characteristics compared to counterpropagating shocks. Existing techniques, however, preclude copropagating shocks, so experiments to date have been limited to the study of counterpropagating shocks. We address this previous limitation and open a physical parameter space for study using a new hohlraum platform on the National Ignition Facility. Initial experimental results are presented together with comparisons from numerical simulations.

Experimental asymmetries in fusion implosions can lead to magnetic field generation in the hot plasma core. For typical parameters, previous studies found that the magnetisation Hall parameter, given by the product of the electron gyro-frequency and Coulomb collision time, can exceed one. This will affect the hydrodynamics through inhibition and deflection of the electron heat flux. The magnetic field source is the collisionless Biermann term, which arises from the Debye shielding potential in electron pressure gradients. We show that there is an additional source term due to the Z dependence of the Coulomb collision operator. If there are ion composition gradients, such as jets of carbon ablator mix entering the hot-spot, this source term can rapidly exceed the Biermann fields. In addition, the Biermann fields are enhanced due to the increased temperature gradients from carbon radiative cooling. Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth is shown to be hydrodynamically scale invariant in convergent cylindrical implosions for targets that varied in radial dimension and implosion timescale by a factor of 3. The targets were driven directly by laser irradiation providing a short impulse, and instability growth at an embedded aluminum interface occurs as it converges radially inward by a factor of 2.25 and decelerates on a central foam core. Late-time growth factors of 14 are observed for a single-mode m=20 azimuthal perturbation at both scales, despite the differences in laser drive conditions between the experimental facilities, consistent with predictions from radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. This platform enables detailed investigations into the limits of hydrodynamic scaling in high-energy-density systems.

Energy-transport effects can alter the structure that develops as a supernova evolves into a supernova remnant. The Rayleigh–Taylor instability is thought to produce structure at the interface between the stellar ejecta and the circumstellar matter, based on simple models and hydrodynamic simulations. Here we report experimental results from the National Ignition Facility to explore how large energy fluxes, which are present in supernovae, affect this structure. We observed a reduction in Rayleigh–Taylor growth. In analyzing the comparison with supernova SN1993J, a Type II supernova, we found that the energy fluxes produced by heat conduction appear to be larger than the radiative energy fluxes, and large enough to have dramatic consequences. No reported astrophysical simulations have included radiation and heat conduction self-consistently in modeling supernova remnants and these dynamics should be noted in the understanding of young supernova remnants., Radiation and conduction are generally considered as the main energy transport mechanisms for the evolution of early supernova remnants. Here the authors experimentally show the role of electron heat transfer on the growth of Rayleigh–Taylor instability in young supernova remnants.

The High Energy Density Physics program at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has had a multiyear campaign to verify the predictive capability of the interface evolution of shock propagation through different profiles machined into the face of a plastic package with an iodine-doped plastic center region. These experiments varied the machined surface from a simple sine wave to a double sine wave and finally to a multitude of different profiles with power spectrum ranges and shapes to verify LANL’s simulation capability. The MultiMode-A profiles had a band-pass flat region of the power spectrum, while the MultiMode-B profile had two band-pass flat regions. Another profile of interest was the 1-Peak profile, a band-pass concept with a spike to one side of the power spectrum. All these profiles were machined in flat and tilted orientations of 30 and 60 deg. Magnetic fields are well known to affect the evolution of fluids via the J × B force, where J is the current density and B is the magnetic field. This force leads to the influence of magnetic fields on hydrodynamics (magnetohydrodynamics). Magnetic fields are often neglected in modeling of high-energy-density plasmas, since J × B is very small compared with the plasma pressure gradients. However, many experiments lie in a separate part of parameter space where the plasma is indirectly affected via magnetization of the heat flux and charged particle transport. This is true even for initially unmagnetized plasmas, since misaligned density and temperature gradients can self-generate magnetic fields. By comparing terms in the induction equation, we go on to estimate the regions of parameter space where these self-generated fields are strong enough to affect the hydrodynamics.

Preheat in laser-driven experiments can have negative impacts on inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and hydrodynamic experiments. While many groups employ the use of dopants to reduce or block preheat, direct quantification has not previously been explored. We developed a planar platform and a series of ablator targets to measure the electron and x-ray spectra generated by laser-plasma interactions with a direct drive using OMEGA-60. By comparing both thin ablators (75m) and thick ablators (270 m) that were either pure CH, 3% Si doped or 3% I doped, we were able to measure differences in electron and x-ray spectra. In addition, we observed the preheat growth of tracer layers and observed reductions in the growth with different materials. We find that iodine or a thin gold layer is the best at tamping the direct-drive preheat at OMEGA, but that the growth is still significant.

On laser-driven platforms the assumption of experiment repeatability is particularly important due to a typically low data acquisition rate that doesn’t often allow for data redundancy. If the platform is repeatable, then measurements of the repeatable dynamics from multiple experiments can be treated as measurements of the same system. In high-energy-density hydrodynamic instability experiments the interface growth is assumed to be one of the repeatable aspects of the system. In this paper we demonstrate the repeatability of the instability growth in the counter-propagating shear experiment at the OMEGA laser facility, where the instability growth is characterized by the tracer layer thickness or mix-width evolution. In our previous experiment campaigns we have assumed the instability growth was repeatable enough to identify trends, but in this work we explicitly show that the mix-width measurements for nominally identical experiments are repeatable within the measurement error bars.

X-ray opacity is a crucial factor of all radiation-hydrodynamics calculations, yet it is one of the least validated of the material properties in the simulation codes. Recent opacity experiments at the Sandia Z-machine have shown up to factors of two discrepancies between theory and experiment, casting doubt on the validity of the opacity models. Therefore, a new experimental opacity platform is being developed on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) not only to verify the Z-machine experimental results but also to extend the experiments to other temperatures and densities. The first experiments will be directed towards measuring the opacity of iron at a temperature of ∼160 eV and an electron density of ∼7 × 1021 cm−3. Preliminary experiments on NIF have demonstrated the ability to create a sufficiently bright point backlighter using an imploding plastic capsule and also a hohlraum that can heat the opacity sample to the desired conditions. The first of these iron opacity experiments is expected to be performed in 2017.

New short-pulse kilojoule, Petawatt-class lasers, which have recently come online and are coupled to large-scale, many-beam long-pulse facilities, undoubtedly serve as very exciting tools to capture transformational science opportunities in high energy density physics. These short-pulse lasers also happen to reside in a unique laser regime: very high-energy (kilojoule), relatively long (multi-picosecond) pulse-lengths, and large (10s of micron) focal spots, where their use in driving energetic particle beams is largely unexplored. Proton acceleration via Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) using the Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) short-pulse laser at the National Ignition Facility in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is demonstrated for the first time, and protons of up to 18 MeV are measured using laser irradiation of >1 ps pulse-lengths and quasi-relativistic (∼1018 W/cm2) intensities. This is indicative of a super-ponderomotive electron acceleration mechanism that sustains acceleration over long (multi-picosecond) time-scales and allows for proton energies to be achieved far beyond what the well-established scalings of proton acceleration via TNSA would predict at these modest intensities. Furthermore, the characteristics of the ARC laser (large ∼100 μm diameter focal spot, flat spatial profile, multi-picosecond, relatively low prepulse) provide acceleration conditions that allow for the investigation of 1D-like particle acceleration. A high flux ∼ 50 J of laser-accelerated protons is experimentally demonstrated. A new capability in multi-picosecond particle-in-cell simulation is applied to model the data, corroborating the high proton energies and elucidating the physics of multi-picosecond particle acceleration.

Inertial confinement fusion fuel suffers increased x-ray radiation losses when carbon from the capsule ablator mixes into the hot-spot. Here, we present one- and two-dimensional ion Vlasov-Fokker-Planck simulations that resolve hot-spot self-heating in the presence of a localized spike of carbon mix, totalling $1.9%$ of the hot-spot mass. The mix region cools and contracts over tens of picoseconds, increasing its $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particle stopping power and radiative losses. This makes a localized mix region more severe than an equal amount of uniformly distributed mix. There is also a purely kinetic effect that reduces fusion reactivity by several percent, since faster ions in the tail of the distribution are absorbed by the mix region. Radiative cooling and contraction of the spike induces fluid motion, causing neutron spectrum broadening. This artificially increases the inferred experimental ion temperatures and gives line of sight variations.

A scaling study of short-pulse laser-driven proton and electron acceleration was conducted as a function of pulse duration, laser energy, and laser intensity in the multi-picosecond (ps) regime (∼0.8 ps–20 ps). Maximum proton energies significantly greater than established scaling laws were observed, consistent with observations at other multi-ps laser facilities. In addition, maximum proton energies and electron temperatures in this regime were found to be strongly dependent on the laser pulse duration and preplasma conditions. A modified proton scaling model is presented that is able to better represent the accelerated proton characteristics in this multi-ps regime.

An iterative forward modeling approach has been developed and applied to the analysis of radiography data from cylindrical Rayleigh-Taylor instability studies performed at the Omega laser facility. Synthetic radiographs are generated and iterated using the Bayes’ Inference Engine [1] to produce maximum likelihood estimates for the time-dependent amplitude of deceleration-phase Rayleigh-Taylor modes seeded by a sinusoidal perturbation in the aluminum marker layer. This iterative forward modeling approach self-consistently fits the magnification and parallax in the image, both of which are sensitive at this scale (~13x magnification) to misalignments of the pinhole smaller than 200 μm. Systematic errors in the inference of growth factor as large as 10% have been identified and eliminated by this technique. Furthermore, the self-consistent modeling of image parallax reveals that these implosions are not elliptical as they may appear to the casual observer, but indeed highly symmetric. The regularizing priors adopted here, and further constraints that might be applied in future work, reduce experimental uncertainties and lend greater statistical significance to comparisons with hydrodynamic modeling.

Radiation-hydrodynamics simulations are used to design laser-driven cylindrical implosion experiments to directly measure hydrodynamic instability growth in convergent geometry. Designs for two different size targets, varying in radial dimension by a factor of three, are presented. A set of beam pointings and powers are identified for each scale design that result in a nearly axially uniform implosion of an embedded marker layer. The implosion trajectories are shown to be scale-invariant between designs, with nearly identical scaled acceleration profiles. Linear theory and radiation-hydrodynamics simulations predict that Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth of an azimuthal perturbation, machined on the inner surface of the embedded marker, is also scale-invariant between designs.

The opacities of iron and other mid-Z elements help to regulate the transport of energy in the sun. Recent experiments on the Sandia National Laboratories Z machine have shown large discrepancies between the measured and calculated opacities of iron at certain solar conditions. To replicate these opacity measurements a platform is being developed on the National Ignition Facility to measure the opacities of iron and other elements at the same conditions as in the Z experiments. The NIF platform consists of a hohlraum to heat the opacity sample to the desired conditions, a separate backlighter to radiograph the sample, and a spectrometer to give the spectrally resolved opacity. Not only must the opacity be measured but the temperature and density of the sample must also be accurately determined. This platform has now produced its first iron transmission measurements. These measurements will be presented along with plans for future measurements and details on how the measurements will be improved.

We extract a suitably averaged fluctuating density from the two-dimensional radiographic image of a flow. The X-ray attenuation is given by the Beer–Lambert law which exponentially damps the incident beam intensity by a factor proportional to the density, opacity and thickness of the target. By making reasonable assumptions for the mean density, opacity and effective thickness of the target flow, we estimate the density fluctuation contribution to the attenuation. The extracted density fluctuations averaged across the thickness of the flow in the direction of the beam may be used to form the density–specific-volume correlation b . In a statistical description of variable-density turbulence, b quantifies the degree of mixedness. The ability to extract a measure of mixedness from experimental data would be a powerful tool that could be used in the validation of mix models. The scheme proposed is tested for DNS data computed for variable density buoyancy-driven mixing. We quantify the deficits in the extracted value of b due to target thickness, Atwood number and modeled signal noise. This analysis justifies using the proposed scheme to infer the mix parameter from thin targets at moderate to low Atwood numbers. To illustrate how the scheme might be used in a practical problem, we demonstrate its application to a radiographic image of counter-shear flow obtained from experiments at the National Ignition Facility.

Deceleration-phase Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) growth during inertial confinement fusion capsule implosions significantly affects the performance as it mixes cold ablator material into the fuel. Precise measurements of such instability growth are essential for both validating the existing simulation codes and improving our predictive capability. RTI measurements on the inner surface of a spherical shell are limited and are often inferred indirectly at limited convergence. In contrast, cylindrical implosions allow for direct diagnostic access to the converging interface by imaging down the cylinder axis while retaining the effects of convergence. We have performed direct-drive cylindrical implosion experiments at both the OMEGA and the NIF laser facilities using scaled targets. RTI growth is demonstrated to be scale-invariant between the cylindrical targets at OMEGA and similar targets at the NIF, which are scaled up by a factor of three in the radial dimension. Single-mode (m = 20) instability growth factors of ∼14 are measured at a convergence ratio (CR) ∼ 2.5 with nearly identical mode growth at both scales. The measurements are in agreement with xRAGE radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. In addition, we have developed the Bayesian-inference-engine method to account for the variations in the target alignment, magnification, and the parallax effect in the measurement, allowing a more precise comparison between the experimental data and the simulations.

A hydrodynamic shear mixing layer experiment at the National Ignition Facility had previously demonstrated Eulerian scaling of integrated, late-time quantities, including turbulent kinetic energy. In this manuscript, the experiment is repeated with new materials. Using the new dataset, we demonstrate that Euler-number scalings hold not just for late time, but dynamically throughout the experiment, for measurements in all three spatial dimensions. Incorporating the dynamic scaling leads to an enhanced calculation that the heavier of the two scaled experiments has approached three generations of mergers of its primary instability's structures and a consistent observation of such a merger in action in the lighter of the two scaled experiments. Furthermore, the improved scrutiny of the time evolution of instability structures leads to sharper estimates of turbulent kinetic energy, including a demonstration of different behaviors correlating with surface roughness (quantitatively consistent with transitions between laminar and turbulent initial states), as predicted by a Reynolds-averaged turbulent model, which evidently correctly handles the differing shock-roughness interactions to drive its internal state of the model into different regimes. Altogether, a picture arises of the analytical improvements in treating these variations (of times, densities, and roughnesses) as a unified whole and of multiple ways by which deviations from the scaling could indicate an onset of non-hydrodynamic behavior. Such deviations were not expected for these experiments (which models correctly indicated would remain hydrodynamic) but could be introduced by, for example, imposing external fields or increasing drive energy to test conditions relevant to inertial confinement fusion or other high-energy-density experiments.

Hydrodynamic instabilities such as the Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) and Richtmyer–Meshkov instabilities disrupt inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions through the growth of 3D perturbations. Growth of these 3D imperfections at the interfaces of an ICF capsule during implosion lead to mixing between materials that is detrimental to performance. These instabilities have been studied extensively in planar geometry, but such experiments lack the effects of convergence in spherical implosions. While several studies have been performed in spherical geometry, these often lack a direct means to measure perturbation growth. Experiments in cylindrical geometry include convergence effects while maintaining direct diagnostic access. Although cylinders have less compression than spheres, they do provide an excellent platform to validate modeling for convergent geometries. The problem with previous cylindrical implosion experiments was that the convergence ratios were limited to ∼4. With the National Ignition Facility (NIF), larger cylindrical targets can be driven to convergences of 10–15 while maintaining a large enough final diameter to measure perturbation growth. This paper reviews the design process used to both benchmark radiation hydrodynamics codes and enable 1D post-processed simulations to explore design space to separate compression effects from acceleration/deceleration RT instability. Results from 1D simulations suggest that cylindrical implosions on the NIF can produce high-convergence experiments to validate RT instability growth for ICF implosions.

Imperfections at the interface between the ablator and fuel in an ICF capsule can give rise the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI). The effects of multiple shocks on this impulse-driven instability has been well studied in traditional, low energy density (LED) regimes, but work is limited in the high energy density (HED) regime. Instability and turbulent characteristics are difficult to diagnose in an ICF capsule, with its three dimensional and converging geometry. This paper highlights the platform development of a new planar HED experiment at the OMEGA and NIF laser facilities designed specifically to study the feedthrough of the RMI in a thin layer. Using a simple shock and then re-shock setup, Multi-shock (Mshock) has successfully redesigned the previous Reshock experiment to produce a well-defined mixing layer post-shock and reshock. Localized doping profiles have been developed to improve feature contrast, and reduce edge effects. A series of initial conditions have been precision machined and characterized for comparison, though the effects of preheat are distorting these profiles. First results quantifying the growth via the mixing layer width have been made with an 1D Eulerian code and an 1D RANS mix-model.

We present simulations of a new experimental platform at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) for studying the hydrodynamic instability growth of a high-energy density (HED) fluid interface that undergoes multiple shocks, i.e., is “reshocked.” In these experiments, indirect-drive laser cavities drive strong shocks through an initially solid, planar interface between a high-density plastic and low-density foam, in either one or both directions. The first shock turns the system into an unstable fluid interface with the premachined initial condition that then grows via the Richtmyer–Meshkov and Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities. Backlit X-ray imaging is used to visualize the instability growth at different times. Our main result is that this new HED reshock platform is established and that the initial data confirm the experiment operates in a hydrodynamic regime similar to what simulations predict. The simulations also reveal new types of edge effects that can disturb the experiment at late times and suggest ways to mitigate them.

Supersonic and diffusive radiation flow is an important test problem for the radiative transfer models used in radiation-hydrodynamics computer codes owing to solutions being accessible via analytic and numeric methods. We present experimental results with which we compare these solutions by studying supersonic and diffusive flow in the laboratory. We present results of higher-accuracy experiments than previously possible studying radiation flow through up to 7 high-temperature mean free paths of low-density, chlorine-doped polystyrene foam and silicon dioxide aerogel contained by an Au tube. Measurements of the heat front position and absolute measurements of the x-ray emission arrival at the end of the tube are used to test numerical and analytical models. We find excellent absolute agreement with simulations provided that the opacity and the equation of state are adjusted within expected uncertainties; analytical models provide a good phenomenological match to measurements but are not in quantitative agreement due to their limited scope.

Direct drive implosions of plastic capsules have been performed at the National Ignition Facility to provide a broad-spectrum (500–2000 eV) X-ray continuum source for X-ray transmission spectroscopy. The source was developed for the high-temperature plasma opacity experimental platform. Initial experiments using 2.0 mm diameter polyalpha-methyl styrene capsules with ∼20 μm thickness have been performed. X-ray yields of up to ∼1 kJ/sr have been measured using the Dante multichannel diode array. The backlighter source size was measured to be ∼100 μm FWHM, with ∼350 ps pulse duration during the peak emission stage. Results are used to simulate transmission spectra for a hypothetical iron opacity sample at 150 eV, enabling the derivation of photometrics requirements for future opacity experiments.

In this work, we discuss simulations, along with a benchmarking experiment, performed using the xRAGE code which demonstrate the ability of a laser model to predict laser-driven, high-energy-density shock hydrodynamics with good fidelity. This directly contributes to our ability to model hydrodynamic-instability dynamics produced by a laser drive typical of those available at OMEGA, OMEGA-EP, NIF, and similar facilities. In particular, we show how the laser model is essential for predicting deceleration-phase Rayleigh-Taylor arising from laser turn-off. We do this using the experimental case of a seeded single-mode perturbation. In an effort to better understand mix in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) implosion cores, a series of laser-driven mix experiments has been designed for the University of Rochester's OMEGA laser. Our objective is to perform experiments to investigate the turbulent mixing at material interfaces when subject to multiple shocks and reshocks or high-speed shear. Ultimately, these experiments are providing detailed quantitative measurements to assist in validation efforts for the BHR-2 mix model, which is implemented in the RAGE hydrodynamics code. The Reshock experiment studies the physical process of shocking and reshocking mix layers. Radiographs are recorded to compile a temporal evolution of the mixing layer and its subsequent reshock, compression, and re-growth phases. The Shear experiment investigates shear-driven growth of a mix layer, and radiography captures the time evolution of the development of turbulent mixing due to shear. Simulations of both the Reshock and Shear experiments using RAGE and the BHR-2 mix model demonstrate good agreement with the mix evolution seen in the experimental data, giving confidence that BHR-2 is capable of simulating the behavior of both compressive and shear-driven turbulent flows.

We report an experimental and computational study investigating the effects of laser preheat on the hydrodynamic behavior of a material layer. In particular, we find that perturbation of the surface of the layer results in a complex interaction, in which the bulk of the layer develops density, pressure, and temperature structure and in which the surface experiences instability-like behavior, including mode coupling. A uniform one-temperature preheat model is used to reproduce the experimentally observed behavior, and we find that this model can be used to capture the evolution of the layer, while also providing evidence of complexities in the preheat behavior. This result has important consequences for inertially confined fusion plasmas, which can be difficult to diagnose in detail, as well as for laser hydrodynamics experiments, which generally depend on assumptions about initial conditions in order to interpret their results.

The acceleration of intense proton and ion beams by ultra-intense lasers has matured to a point where applications in basic research and technology are being developed. Crucial for harvesting the unmatched beam parameters driven by the relativistic electron sheath is the precise control of the beam. We report on recent experiments using the PHELIX laser at GSI, the VULCAN laser at RAL and the TRIDENT laser at LANL to control and use laser accelerated proton beams for applications in high energy density research. We demonstrate efficient collimation of the proton beam using high field pulsed solenoid magnets, a prerequisite to capture and transport the beam for applications. Furthermore we report on two campaigns to use intense, short proton bunches to isochorically heat solid targets up to the warm dense matter state. The temporal profile of the proton beam allows for rapid heating of the target, much faster than the hydrodynamic response time thereby creating a strongly coupled plasma at solid density. The target parameters are then probed by X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) to reveal the density and temperature of the heated volume. This combination of two powerful techniques developed during the past few years allows for the generation and investigation of macroscopic samples of matter in states present in giant planets or the interior of the earth. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Coherent emergent structures have been observed in a high-energy-density supersonic mixing layer experiment. A millimeter-scale shock tube uses lasers to drive Mbar shocks into the tube volume. The shocks are driven into initially solid foam (60 $\mathrm{mg}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$) hemicylinders separated by an Al or Ti metal tracer strip; the components are vaporized by the drive. Before the experiment disassembles, the shocks cross at the tube center, creating a very fast ($\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}Ug$ 200 km/s) shear-unstable zone. After several nanoseconds, an expanding mixing layer is measured, and after 10+ ns we observe the appearance of streamwise-periodic, spanwise-aligned rollers associated with the primary Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of mixing layers. We additionally image roller pairing and spanwise-periodic streamwise-aligned filaments associated with secondary instabilities. New closures are derived to connect length scales of these structures to estimates of fluctuating velocity data otherwise unobtainable in the high-energy-density environment. This analysis indicates shear-induced specific turbulent energies ${10}^{3}--{10}^{4}$ times higher than the nearest conventional experiments. Because of difficulties in continuously driving systems under these conditions and the harshness of the experimental environment limiting the usable diagnostics, clear evidence of these developing structures has never before been observed in this regime.

In addition to the matured “laser inertial fusion energy” with spherical compression and thermal ignition of deuterium-tritium (DT), a very new alternative for the fast ignition scheme may have now been opened by using side-on block ignition aiming beyond the DT-fusion with igniting the neutron-free reaction of proton-boron-11 (p-11B). Measurements with laser pulses of terawatt power and ps duration led to the discovery of an anomaly of interaction, if the prepulses are cut off by a factor 108(contrast ratio) to avoid relativistic self focusing in agreement with preceding computations. Applying this to petawatt (PW) pulses for Bobin-Chu conditions of side-on ignition of solid fusion fuel results after several improvements in energy gains of 10,000. This is in contrast to the impossible laser-ignition of p-11B by the usual spherical compression and thermal ignition. The side-on ignition is less than ten times only more difficult than for DT ignition. This is essentially based on the instant and direct conversion the optical laser energy by the nonlinear force into extremely high plasma acceleration. Genuine two-fluid hydrodynamic computations for DT are presented showing details how ps laser pulses generate a fusion flame in solid state density with an increase of the density in the thin flame region. Densities four times higher are produced automatically confirming a Rankine-Hugoniot shock wave process with an increasing thickness of the shock up to the nanosecond range and a shock velocity of 1500 km/s which is characteristic for these reactions.

Discrepancies exist between theoretical and experimental opacity data for iron, at temperatures 180&ndash, 195 eV and electron densities near 3 &times, 1022/cm3, relevant to the solar radiative-convective boundary. Another discrepancy, between theory and helioseismic measurements of the boundary&rsquo, s location, would be ameliorated if the experimental opacity is correct. To address these issues, this paper details the first results from new experiments under development at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), using a different method to replicate the prior experimental conditions. In the NIF experiments, 64 laser beams indirectly heat a plastic-tamped rectangular iron-magnesium sample inside a gold cavity. Another 64 beams implode a spherical plastic shell to produce a continuum X-ray flash which backlights the hot sample. An X-ray spectrometer records the transmitted X-rays, the unattenuated X-rays passing around the sample, and the sample&rsquo, s self-emission. From these data, X-ray transmission spectra are inferred, showing Mg K-shell and Fe L-shell X-ray transitions from plasma at a temperature of ~150 eV and electron density of ~8 &times, 1021/cm3. These conditions are similar to prior Z measurements which agree better with theory. The NIF transmission data show statistical uncertainties of 2&ndash, 10%, but various systematic uncertainties must be addressed before pursuing quantitative comparisons. The paths to reduction of the largest uncertainties are discussed. Once the uncertainty is reduced, future NIF experiments will probe higher temperatures (170&ndash, 200 eV) to address the ongoing disagreement between theory and Z data.

Beryllium is a candidate ablator material for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion experiments, motivated by its high mass ablation rate, which is advantageous for implosion coupling efficiency and stabilization of the ablation-front instability growth. We present new data on the shock propagation, in-flight shape, and hot spot self-emission shape from gas-filled capsules that demonstrate the feasibility of predictable, symmetric, controllable beryllium implosions at a case-to-capsule ratio of 3.7. The implosions are round (Legendre mode 2 amplitude ≲5%) at an inner beam power and the energy fraction of 26%–28% of the total, indicating that larger beryllium capsules could be driven symmetrically using the National Ignition Facility.

A point-projection soft X-ray Opacity Spectrometer (OpSpec) has been implemented to measure X-ray spectra from ∼1 to 2 keV on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Measurement of such soft X-rays with open-aperture point-projection detectors is challenging because only very thin filters may be used to shield the detector from the hostile environment. OpSpec diffracts X-rays from 540 to 2100 eV off a potassium (or rubidium) acid phthalate (KAP or RbAP) crystal onto either image plates or, most recently, X-ray films. A “sacrificial front filter” strategy is used to prevent crystal damage, while 2 or 3 rear filters protect the data. Since May 2017, OpSpec has been recording X-ray transmission data for iron-magnesium plasmas on the NIF, at “Anchor 1” plasma conditions (temperature ∼150 eV, density ∼7 × 1021 e−/cm3). Upgrades improved OpSpec’s performance on 6 NIF shots in August and December 2017, with reduced backgrounds and 100% data return using filter stacks as thin as 2.9 μm (total).
