Abstract Background Young people are disproportionately affected by sexually transmissible infections in Australia but face barriers to accessing sexual health services, including concerns over confidentiality and, for some, geographic remoteness. A possible innovation to increase access to services is the use of telemedicine. Methods Young people's (aged 16-24) pre-use views on telephone and webcam consultations for sexual health were investigated through a widely-advertised national online survey in Australia. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the study sample and chi-square, Mann-Whitney U test, or t-tests were used to assess associations. Multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the association between the three-level outcome variable (first preference in person, telephone or webcam, and demographic and behavioural variables); odds ratios and 95%CI were calculated using in person as the reference category. Free text responses were analysed thematically. Results A total of 662 people completed the questionnaire. Overall, 85% of the sample indicated they would be willing to have an in-person consultation with a doctor, 63% a telephone consultation, and 29% a webcam consultation. Men, respondents with same-sex partners, and respondents reporting three or more partners in the previous year were more willing to have a webcam consultation. Imagining they lived 20 minutes from a doctor, 83% of respondents reported that their first preference would be an in-person consultation with a doctor; if imagining they lived two hours from a doctor, 51% preferred a telephone consultation. The main objections to webcam consultations in the free text responses were privacy and security concerns relating to the possibility of the webcam consultation being recorded, saved, and potentially searchable and retrievable online. Conclusions This study is the first we are aware of that seeks the views of young people on telemedicine and access to sexual health services. Although only 29% of respondents were willing to have a webcam consultation, such a service may benefit youth who may not otherwise access a sexual health service. The acceptability of webcam consultations may be increased if medical clinics provide clear and accessible privacy policies ensuring that consultations will not be recorded or saved.

Research on female genital cosmetic surgery usually comes from Anglophone countries. We investigated female genital cosmetic surgery in the predominantly Muslim South-East Asian country of Indonesia, aiming to identify the procedures offered by medical clinics on Instagram, how they are justified, and what they claim to achieve; and to understand what this means for women and their bodies. The 184 eligible posts from 19 clinics between 1 January to 31 March 2021 offered vaginoplasty, labiaplasty, hymenoplasty, and other procedures. Reflexive thematic analysis yielded three themes: Why you should have female genital cosmetic surgery, Indications for female genital cosmetic surgery, and What you will gain from female genital cosmetic surgery. Posts were similar to those identified in other countries, revealing implicit vulvar aesthetics, expectations that women choose to 'improve' their genitals, the need to please men, and that female genital cosmetic surgery is straightforward. Two differences from Anglophone advertising were the use of euphemisms to describe the vulva and an emphasis on physical 'virginity'. Across countries, female genital cosmetic surgery advertising appears to arise from patriarchal constructs of women's bodies and determination to control them. We contend that Indonesia shares with other countries the need for education—of medical practitioners and the general public—about sexuality and the vulva, and that the advertising of female genital cosmetic surgery should be regulated and rigorously monitored. While the appropriateness of restorative justice for sexual and family violence continues to experience worldwide feminist debate, these programs already exist. We thematically analyzed the transcripts of former members of a second-wave feminist antirape organization in Australia to ascertain their perspectives on a victim-centered conferencing model. They provided informed and valuable insights drawn from their decades of advocacy. Participants supported restorative justice in principle, stressing respect for victims' agency and independence in all policies and program designs. Their reservations, consistent with concerns in the literature, related to meeting victims' needs within a constrained system rather than principled opposition to the concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Despite the considerable and increasing proportion of women of reproductive age with a chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) and the potential adverse implications of many NCDs for childbearing, little is known about the fertility management experiences of women with an NCD, including their contraceptive use, pregnancy experiences and outcomes, and reproductive health care utilisation. The aim of this study was to investigate the fertility management experiences of women with an NCD and draw comparisons with women without an NCD. Method A sample of 18-50 year-old women (n = 1543) was randomly recruited from the Australian electoral roll in 2013. Of these women, 172 women reported a physical, chronic non-communicable disease: diabetes, arthritis, asthma, hypertension, heart disease, thyroid disorders, and cystic fibrosis. Respondents completed an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. Factors associated with fertility management were identified in multivariable analyses. Results Women who reported having an NCD were significantly more likely than women who did not report an NCD to have ever been pregnant (75.9 vs. 67.5%, p = 0.034), have had an unintended pregnancy (33.47 vs. 25.5%, p = 0.026), and have had an abortion (20.3 vs. 14.2%, p = 0.044); they were less likely to consult a healthcare provider about fertility management (45.0 vs. 54.4%, p = 0.024). Similar proportions were using contraception (48.8 vs. 54.5%, p = 0.138). An Australian study of parent-adolescent communication about sexuality revealed complex meanings inherent in the understanding of "openness". These included willingness to answer questions while not keeping a spotlight on the topic; having an open-minded attitude; balancing openness with privacy; and being responsive to characteristics of the child. Various constraints applied to the application of open communication in this sensitive area. Given the range of meanings encompassed by "openness", the authors recommend that social scientists limit their application of this term in the study of communication in families, and that sex educators take care to be more specific in recommending openness in communication about sexuality.

Discusses the difficulties experienced by fathers in carrying out what they accept as their parental responsibility to communicate with their children about sexuality. Includes examples from interviews with fathers, their wives, and their adolescent children. Donated sperm, eggs, and embryos are an increasing feature of assisted reproduction; people conceived in this way have different genetic and social histories. Although most offspring of donor-assisted conception are ignorant of their genetic history, recipient parents must negotiate increasing demand for full disclosure to offspring. This paper illustrates some of the reasons parents give for not telling their children, underlines the experience of many parents of being uncertain of how to go about telling, presents information from some parents who have endeavoured to be open with their children about conception from very early childhood, and discusses implications for the narrative identity of offspring of donor-assisted conception. Recipient parents (n = 55) and offspring (12) from Australia; Canada, US, England, and Argentina were interviewed and subsequently consulted about the development of their narrative accounts and the way in which these have been interpreted. Parental narratives were found to be located along a continuum, broadly encompassing: (1) Parents who intend to exclude donor-assisted conception from the narratives they construct for their children, (2) parents who are uncertain about what they want to do, or confused about the best way to disclose and discuss donor conception with their children and (3) those have incorporated the donor in their children's narratives from the beginning. From interviews with offspring and on the basis of human rights issues and the increasing salience of genetic knowledge, it is concluded that disclosure to offspring before adolescence should be encouraged. As part of a larger study on donor-assisted conception, this paper reports research which explored the ways in which women who have donated or received eggs or embryos interpret such donations in the context of motherhood. Narrative analysis of women's accounts revealed that egg and embryo donations are not interpreted as incompatible with motherhood; that they may be explained as contributing to the significance of motherhood through the desire to assist some women to whom motherhood has been denied; and that the welfare of offspring of donated eggs and embryos is considered by donors. Differences were found between the meanings of egg donation and embryo donation, including likening eggs to cells and embryos to children, and in donors the expression of stronger maternal connection to the offspring of donated embryos. These accounts reveal individual variation, complexity, and change, reflecting (among other things) the dynamic process of narrative revision. KEYWORDS.
