Abstract

An electron-phonon cavity consisting of a quantum dot embedded in a free-standing GaAs/AlGaAs membrane is characterized in Coulomb blockade measurements at low temperatures. We find a complete suppression of single electron tunneling around zero bias leading to the formation of an energy gap in the transport spectrum. The observed effect is induced by the excitation of a localized phonon mode confined in the cavity. This phonon blockade of transport is lifted at magnetic fields where higher electronic states with nonzero angular momentum are brought into resonance with the phonon energy., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Experiments on self-diffusion in amorphous silicon (Si) were performed at temperatures between 460 to 600° C. The amorphous structure was prepared by Si ion implantation of single crystalline Si isotope multilayers epitaxially grown on a silicon-on-insulator wafer. The Si isotope profiles before and after annealing were determined by means of secondary ion mass spectrometry. Isothermal diffusion experiments reveal that structural relaxation does not cause any significant intermixing of the isotope interfaces whereas self-diffusion is significant before the structure recrystallizes. The temperature dependence of self-diffusion is described by an Arrhenius law with an activation enthalpy Q =2.70 +- 0.11eV and preexponential factor D0=5.5(+11.1 -3.7) × 10−2 cm2 s−1. Remarkably, Q equals the activation enthalpy of hydrogen diffusion in amorphous Si, the migration of bond defects determining boron diffusion, and the activation enthalpy of solid phase epitaxial recrystallization reported in the literature. This close agreement provides strong evidence that self-diffusion is mediated by local bond rearrangements rather than by the migration of extended defects as suggested by Strauß et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 025901 (2016)).

Abstract

Amorphous silicon (a-Si) is a widely used material, especially for solar cells and thin-film-transistors. Measuring the self-diffusion coefficient of a-Si is experimentally demanding since recrystallization during diffusion annealing must be suppressed. We used Si on insulator (SOI) structures to stabilize the amorphous state during annealing. Isotopically enriched Si multilayers with a thickness per layer of about 10 nm were grown by means of molecular beam epitaxy on top of SOI wafers. Subsequently the whole top crystalline Si layer was amorphized by means of Si ion implantation. Before and after annealing the distribution of the Si isotopes within the isotope structure was measured with SIMS. The observed broadening suggests a significantly higher self-diffusion in the amorphous compared to the crystalline state. Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to gain information about the mechanism of self-diffusion. We used an adjusted Stillinger-Weber potential, as the original Stillinger-Weber parametrization for Si overestimates the mobility of the matrix atoms. The parameters were chosen to simulate the experimentally observed diffusion in a-Si. The coordination numbers and radial-distribution-function were analyzed to confirm the assumption of bond switching as the dominant mechanism of self-diffusion.

24. NASA automatic subject analysis technique for extracting retrievable multi-terms (NASA TERM) system

Abstract

Current methods for information processing and retrieval used at the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Facility are reviewed. A more cost effective computer aided indexing system is proposed which automatically generates print terms (phrases) from the natural text. Satisfactory print terms can be generated in a primarily automatic manner to produce a thesaurus (NASA TERMS) which extends all the mappings presently applied by indexers, specifies the worth of each posting term in the thesaurus, and indicates the areas of use of the thesaurus entry phrase. These print terms enable the computer to determine which of several terms in a hierarchy is desirable and to differentiate ambiguous terms. Steps in the NASA TERMS algorithm are discussed and the processing of surrogate entry phrases is demonstrated using four previously manually indexed STAR abstracts for comparison. The simulation shows phrase isolation, text phrase reduction, NASA terms selection, and RECON display.

Abstract

The reagent p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl chloride (PNZ-CI) was used for pre-column derivatization of biogenic amines (BAs) at ambient temperature followed by reversed-phase, liquid-chromatographic separation of the derivatives. Optimized derivatization of samples was achieved within 10 min in borate buffer by adding PNZ-Cl in acetonitrile (MeCN). Excess reagent was scavenged by subsequent addition of glycine in water. For LC a Superspher® RP-18e column and gradient elution using a ternary gradient system containing sodium acetabe buffer (pH 6.1), sodium acetate buffer (pH 4.3) and MeCN, were used. The PNZ-derivatives were quantified by their UV-absorption at 265 nm. Detection limits of BAs were approximately 62–1000 μg L−1 (injected amounts: 53–850 pg) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3:1. The coefficients of determination were 0.9906–0.9992. Diaminohexane was used as internal standard. Recoveries of BAs ranged from 78–93% depending on the food matrix. This method was applied to the quantitative determination of 2-phenylethylamine, tryptamine, serotonin, putrescine, histamine, cadaverine, tyramine, spermidine, and spermine, in beer, wine, vinegars, and lactic fermented cabbage juice. 40. Temperature-sensitive RNA polymerase mutants with altered subunit synthesis and degradation.

Abstract

A temperature-sensitive mutant having a lethal mutation in the gene for the beta subunit of RNA polymerase (nucleosidetriphosphate:RNA nucleotidyltransferase, EC 2.7.7.6) exhibits an apparent 2- to 3-fold decrease in the rates of both beta and beta' subunit synthesis at the non-permissive temperature, relative to total protein. In contrast, a temperature-sensitive mutant with a lethal mutation in the gene encoding beta' has a 5- to 6-fold increase in the rates of beta and beta' synthesis at 42 degrees. These beta and beta' mutants also exhibit rapid degradation of both subunits at the high temperature.

Abstract

The AGARD Multilingual Aeronautical Dictionary (MAD), second edition, published in 1980, contained 7,300 technical terms defined in English but also translated into nine other languages. The preparation work was performed by some 250 scientists and engineers who were members of AGARD and involved the translation skills of staff in many of the NATO nations. Nearly all the compilation and setting work for the book was done by computer and automatic photo-composition, a task of great complexity and one which is unique. The purpose of this publication is to record how the task was approached, in terms of management planning; to state frankly what went wrong, so that these errors will not be repeated; and to make some modest reference to the successes of the programme. It does not deal in great detail with the technical aspects of the task. (Author)
