17. Photosynthetic apparatus plasticity contributes to successful survival of Epipactis atrorubens(Orchidaceae) in adverse conditions of serpentine dumps

Abstract

The study of the rare plant species in technogenically disturbed habitats is a significant prerequisite to preserve their natural populations. Structural and functional characteristics of photosynthetic apparatus and biomass allocation in regionally rare orchid Epipactis atrorubens(Hoffm.) Besser (dark-red helleborine), colonizing two serpentine dumps post-asbestos mining (Anatol’sko-Shilovsky deposit, Sverdlovsk region, Russian), in comparison with the natural forest community were studied. Despite the adverse edaphic conditions (the high stoniness, excess some metals, low content of nutrients, water deficiency), quite numerous populations of E. atrorubenswere found in transformed sites. The orchid plants colonizing the serpentine dumps were distinguished by the thicker leaf blade (by 23%), higher leaf mass per area and leaf density (by 36 and 12%, respectively), as well as reduced diffusion resistance to CO2(by 30%) in comparison with plants in the natural forest community. In addition, the number of cells and chloroplasts per unit leaf area of orchid leaves had increased (by 22% on average). Though orchids grew on serpentine dumps in the unfavorable conditions, the CO2uptake per unit leaf area and chlorophyll content decreased significantly (by 16 and 40%, respectively) only on one of the dumps, which was characterized by greater stoniness, excess light and water deficiency due to the lack of crown closure. The total fresh and dry biomass of orchid individuals from dumps was slightly less (14% on average) than that in the forest natural community. The underground biomass decreased significantly (26% on average), and at the same time aboveground biomass was higher for plant on dumps. The changes in leaf mesostructure, as well as the maintaining of photosynthetic activity contributed to stability of orchid populations in disturbed habitats. Analysis of the structural adaptations of E. atrorubensindicates that it possess a secondary ecological strategy (competitor–stress-tolerator–ruderal). Thus, the study suggests that plasticity of E. atrorubensphotosynthetic apparatus promotes its successful survival in adverse environmental conditions of transformed ecosystems.

Abstract

Background: Today's business is conducted in a highly competitive environment. Adoption of adequate decisions requires a deep, comprehensive assessment of the situation and a reliable forecast of events development. Any enterprise operations are accompanied by risks, which is why there is a need to create and apply marketing strategies within the competence of different divisions. Goal: The purpose of the study reported in the article is to develop methods for assessing the effectiveness and risk level of a marketing strategy of the company's activities relevant in today's economic environment. Methods: The methodological basis of the study are the existing approaches to assessing the degree of marketing strategy risks: stochastic programming methods, the decision tree method, and the method of statistical decisions. Results: The analysis of quantitative methods for the analysis of management decisions in terms of the implementation of marketing strategies of industrial companies is carried out. The sequence of the process of strategic marketing risk management is proposed. Competitive risks in the system of strategic marketing risk management are assessed. Conclusion: The conducted work points to the assessment criteria for the concept of risk management in modern conditions. The main features of the concept should be integration, continuity, and comprehensiveness. This will enable the control and monitoring of various current and future risk situations, revealing the consequences of subjects' actions in risk situations. Implementation of the proposed concept will decrease or eliminate negative results in the formulated and implemented tasks.

Abstract

Metabolic changes under stress are often studied in short-term experiments, revealing rapid responses in gene expression, enzyme activity, and the amount of antioxidants. In a long-term experiment, it is possible to identify adaptive changes in both primary and secondary metabolism. In this study, we characterized the physiological state of tobacco plants and assessed the amount and spectrum of phenolic compounds and the lignification of axial organs under excess copper stress in a long-term experiment (40 days). Plants were treated with 100 and 300 μM CuSO4, as well as a control (Knop solution). Copper accumulation, the size and anatomical structure of organs, stress markers, and the activity of antioxidant enzymes were studied. Lignin content was determined with the cysteine-assisted sulfuric method (CASA), and the metabolite profile and phenolic spectrum were determined with UHPLC-MS and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Cu2+ mainly accumulated in the roots and, to a lesser extent, in the shoots. Copper sulfate (100 μM) slightly stimulated stem and leaf growth. A higher concentration (300 μM) caused oxidative stress; H2O2 content, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX) activity increased in roots, and malondialdehyde (MDA) increased in all organs. The deposition of lignin increased in the roots and stems compared with the control. The content of free phenolics, which could be used as substrates for lignification, declined. The proportions of ferulic, cinnamic, and p-coumaric acids in the hydrolysate of bound phenolics were higher, and they tended toward additional lignification. The metabolic profile changed in both roots and stems at both concentrations, and changed in leaves only at a concentration of 300 μM. Thus, changes in the phenolic spectrum and the enhanced lignification of cell walls in the metaxylem of axial (root and stem) organs in tobacco can be considered important metabolic responses to stress caused by excess CuSO4. Abstract

Background: The world experience of leading companies shows that the effective development of a company, in particular a venture company, and the efficiency of its activities cannot be increased without a proper strategy as a set of measures aimed at achieving the goal set. Objective: The article presents the results of studying and developing a venture company strategy. Results: The main stages of organizing the activities of a venture company are determined, possible strategic alternatives and the problems of venture business are identified, and ways to solve them are proposed. Conclusion: To make adequate decisions, it is necessary to comprehensively assess the situation and make a reliable forecast of further events. This article is relevant since the activity of any enterprise, especially venture capital, is accompanied by risks. Consequently, it is required to develop and apply an activity strategy within the competence of various departments.
