Abstract

There is increasing interest in using cross-laminated timber (CLT) in buildings because of its high strength and stiffness. In Japan, structural design guidelines for CLT buildings were established in 2016 and construction of mid-rise buildings is increasing. Wide-panel walls can exceed widths of 10 m and integrate cut-outs for window and door openings. However, under lateral loads, corner cracks at the openings have been the most prevalent failure mechanism. To investigate the initiation and propagation of corner cracks, a series of bendings are undertaken on L- and T-shape specimens extracted from the CLT panels. In addition, three-point bending and shear tests are also carried out on beam sections extracted from the CLT panels. Three types of brittle failure were observed: bending failure of the beam or column, and rolling shear failure.

Abstract

In this study, the columns with interior notches in traditional Japanese timber frames were selected as the research object, and static bending tests were performed to investigate the effect of interior notches on the flexural properties of columns. First, the bending behaviors of columns under three-point and four-point load configurations were compared to obtain a suitable referenced strength of a column without notches. The reduction in the load-bearing capacity of columns with different types of interior notches in traditional Japanese timber structures was determined through experimental tests and statistical analysis. The results indicated that the mean bending strength of columns with three different notch types was consistent with those without notches, the continuous timber on both sides of the notch had a beneficial effect on maintaining a higher strength and reducing the stress intensity around the notch. The fracture position and the standard deviation of the bending strength were affected not only by the notch depth, but also by the notch width on the tensile side of the column.

Abstract

本項は我が国の伝統木造建築物に見られる特徴を技術的観点から論じたものである。まず、「伝統構法」の架構技術に依存した発達と形態の変遷についてその特徴を明らかとし、続いて嵌合接合部の技術に関して、めり込みに依存した粘り強い性質を持つ接合の原理について論じる。続いて、「バランスを取る、受け流す」をキーワードに、伝統構法建築物に見られる地震力に対する柔軟な考え方を例示する。さらに伝統構法から現代の在来工法へ、住宅がどの様に変化してきたかを論じ、最後に今後伝統構法建築物を建てる際に必要な、設計手法に関する研究を紹介する。

34. Evaluation on dynamic performance of glulam frame structure composed of slotted bolted connection system

Abstract

Earthquake-resisting performance of glulam frame structure was evaluated by shaking table tests on a specially designed glulam “double cross shape” specimen composed of slotted bolted connection (SBC) system. By the first vibration test using sinusoidal wave having a maximum acceleration of 800gal, the specimen survived until 80% level of input waves without damage. After renewing SBC system, the second vibration test was done on a same specimen using the JMA-Kobe NS waves having a PGA of 818gal. The specimen survived until 80% level of input without damage but slightly failed by the panel-shear when 100% level was inputted. Earthquake-resisting performance of glulam moment-resisting joints composed of SBC system was considered as satisfactory enough for ductile joint system, but improvement of panel-shear of glulam member itself was recognized as a future research need., World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE 2014), Quebec City, Canada, 10-14 August 2014.

Abstract

In this study, the reinforcement of wood by screws for partial compression perpendicular to the grain was studied. For the estimation of stiffness and strength, the reinforcement effect of screws depending on their position under the loading plate was evaluated by taking into account the internal displacement distribution of the wood. The finite element analysis (FEA) was used to investigate the internal displacement distribution of the wood. Then an approximate function that can be applied to various internal displacement distributions under loading plate was proposed. From the shear resistance mechanism between the screw and wood by taking their relative displacement distribution into consideration, the equations to estimate the initial stiffness and yield strength of the bearing performance of the wood reinforced by screws were derived. Then partial compression test was carried out for wood reinforced by screws with setting screw thread at various positions. The values obtained by the equations corresponded with the tendency of the experimental results. It was found that the screw reinforcement is more effective when its thread is positioned as much as distant from the contact surface.
