With 168 stone ringed burials and hundreds of rock engravings, Namoratung'a (previously spelt Moruliin Ng'tung'a, Ng'amoritung'a) South near the town of Lokori carries a wealth of archaeological evidence. Yet, the meaning and identity of this site remains elusive largely because it is hard to date, there is little cultural material in the graves and no living areas have been found in association with it. Two radiocarbon dates and the remains of domestic livestock make the site potentially important for understanding the origins, spread and interactions of early food producers in the Lake Turkana region. A study of the rock art may help to understand who lived near Namoratung'a. An eastern Cushitic authorship of the engravings and the burials was suggested by Lynch and Robbins based on astronomical alignments at one of the Namoratung'a sites and a 'best-fit' comparison between the Namoratung'a burials and Nilotic and Cushitic ethnographic data, but beyond noting its similarity to modern-day Turkana livestock brands and its influence on their interpretation of the site, the rock art was not analysed. This paper presents an analysis of the relative chronology of the Namoratung'a South gravestone engravings. This is to establish if the burials were made by the engravers. The relationship of the gravestone engravings to present-day Turkana livestock brands is also considered. This must be addressed before tackling the bigger question surrounding the cultural affiliations of groups who were at Namoratung'a South. Preliminary work suggests that the engravings attached to gravestones are some of the oldest at the site and are made by the grave makers and that these are unlike Turkana brands.
