The objectives of this study were to determine (a) if child characteristics relate to disagreement between clinician-assigned diagnoses and diagnoses derived from parent-report questionnaire, which were available to clinicians, and (b) if disagreement predicts subsequent number of clinic visits attended. This study evaluated the odds of agreement versus disagreement for internalizing and externalizing problems as a function of child age, gender, race, public-aid status, symptom severity, and impairment among 900 children (3-19 years) in a large, urban, child psychiatry clinic. A mixed-effects regression approach was used to evaluate the relationship between disagreement and visit attendance. Internalizing problem disagreement was more likely for children who were males, older, less symptomatic, and receiving Medicaid. Externalizing problem disagreement was more likely for children who were female, older, less impaired, and less symptomatic. Internalizing disagreement predicted significantly fewer visits; externalizing disagreement did not. Clinician-parent disagreement about the nature of child problems may have clinical consequences, especially for internalizing disorders. Attention to child characteristics that predict agreement may diminish discrepancies and reduce attrition from treatment. DOI: 10.1111/j.1939-0025.2010.01041.x

The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavioral reactions of diners when witnessing a food safety violation in a restaurant. Protection motivation and social norms theories were used to identify risk-related behavior to measure risk assessment, appraisal of food safety health threats, and the impact of descriptive and injunctive norms on reaction behaviors of diners in response to unsanitary food handler behavior and restaurant conditions. A mixed-methods approach was used with focus groups to develop the survey instrument that was distributed to 1,800 recipients, resulting in 1,169 usable surveys. Results suggest that if customers perceive a threat to be severe or if they have a belief that responding in a certain way will reduce the risk of a food safety concern, they are more apt to intervene to eliminate the threat. This study also shows that social norms mediate the influence of intervention, despite the severity of threat assessment. Practical and academic implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite increased scholarly interest in how activists use visuals in claim-making and mobilization, little is known about how mainstream news media visually represent social movements and their causes over time. Given the number of studies that argue that journalistic routines, norms, and conventions create hegemonic discourse around political issues, this gap is surprising. In this article, the authors examine whether the images used to visually represent the abortion issue are homogenized. Drawing on an analysis of 2,093 print and electronic news images associated with the abortion debate, the authors find that the visuals used in media coverage are very similar. Likewise, the authors find that the most frequently shown visual landscapes for the abortion issue are relatively stable across six different kinds of events including commemorations, incidents of clinic violence, legislation, Supreme Court decisions, presidential elections, and executive nominations. The authors conclude with a discussion of the implications of this work for the study of social movements and call for more research on how visual landscapes influence audience understanding of both new and enduring issues. The article discusses the case of a 68-year-old woman, who presented with her third stroke. The patient, who has a history of hypertension, hyperlipedemia and tobacco use, has undergone axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, which indicated an abnormal signal of the bilateral hemispheres representative of multiple subacute infarcts. A transesophageal echocardiogram has also shown an atherosclerotic plaque with a mobile complex atheroma in the aortic arch.
