By means of a specific heat, susceptibility and high-pressure electrical resistivity study, we show that the local magnetic moments of the intercalated V ions in V$_{5}$S$_{8}$ realize a prototype of Kondo lattice system, where an antiferromagnetic order of the moments coexists with a Fermi liquid in the VS$_{2}$ layers with intermediate heavy Fermion properties. The antiferromagnetic order and the Fermi-liquid behavior are simultaneously suppressed at a critical pressure, $P_c =10$ GPa, signature of a quantum critical point, which supports a Kondo lattice scenario and raises the question whether, in the paramagnetic phase at higher pressures, the heavy quasiparticles survive or form a non-Fermi liquid phase governed by the Kondo interaction., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Strongly-correlated transition-metal oxides are widely known for their various exotic phenomena. This is exemplified by rare-earth nickelates such as LaNiO$_{3}$, which possess intimate interconnections between their electronic, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. Their properties can be further enhanced by pairing them in hybrid heterostructures, which can lead to hidden phases and emergent phenomena. An important example is the LaNiO$_{3}$/LaTiO$_{3}$ superlattice, where an interlayer electron transfer has been observed from LaTiO$_{3}$ into LaNiO$_{3}$ leading to a high-spin state. However, macroscopic emergence of magnetic order associated with this high-spin state has so far not been observed. Here, by using muon spin rotation, x-ray absorption, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we present direct evidence of an emergent antiferromagnetic order with high magnon energy and exchange interactions at the LaNiO$_{3}$/LaTiO$_{3}$ interface. As the magnetism is purely interfacial, a single LaNiO$_{3}$/LaTiO$_{3}$ interface can essentially behave as an atomically thin strongly-correlated quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet, potentially allowing its technological utilisation in advanced spintronic devices. Furthermore, its strong quasi-two-dimensional magnetic correlations, orbitally-polarized planar ligand holes, and layered superlattice design make its electronic, magnetic, and lattice configurations resemble the precursor states of superconducting cuprates and nickelates, but with an $S \rightarrow 1$ spin state instead., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures

Barium ruthenate Ba$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$, in which Ru$_{3}$O$_{12}$ trimers are connected together to form a chequered two-dimensional framework, has been synthesised and its structural, magnetic and transport properties studied between 300 K and 2 K. The paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N \sim 105$ K evidenced on the susceptibility curve coincides with an increase of electron localization in transport measurements. Thermoelectric power and Hall coefficient measurements both exhibit dramatic changes at $T_N$, characteristic of a reconstruction of the bands structure near the Fermi level. No pronounced structural changes are observed at TN in this compound. The magnetic scattering signal on the neutron powder diffraction patterns below $T_N$ is weak, but can be tentatively modelled with an antiferromagnetic ordering of the spins at both ends of a trimer, the spin of the more symmetric Ru site remaining idle. Crystal field and strong spin-orbit coupling at the Ru$^{4+}$ site seem to be the key parameters to understand the magnetic state of Ba$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$.

By means of a combined x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat study, we investigate the interplay between orthorhombic distortion and stripe-like antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in the Mott insulator BaCoS$_{2}$ at $T_N=290$ K. The data give evidence of a purely electronic AFM transition with no participation of the lattice. The observation of large thermal fluctuations in the vicinity of $T_N$ and a Schottky anomaly unveils competing ground states within a minute $\sim$1 meV energy range that differ in the orbital and spin configurations of the Co ions. This interpretation suggests that the stripe-like order results from a spontaneous symmetry breaking of the geometrically frustrated pristine tetragonal phase, which offers an ideal playground to study the driving force of multi-orbital Mott transitions without the participation of the lattice., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Supplemental Information

The quasi-2D Pt-based rare earth intermetallic material LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ has attracted attention as it exhibits strong interplay between charge density wave (CDW) and and superconductivity (SC). However, the most of the results reported on this material come from theoretical calculations, preliminary bulk investigations and powder samples, which makes it difficult to uniquely determine the temperature evolution of its crystal structure and, consequently, of its CDW transition. Therefore, the published literature around LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ is often controversial. In this paper, we clarify the complex evolution of the crystal structure, and the temperature dependence of the development of density wave transitions, in good quality LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ single crystals, with high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction data. According to our findings, on cooling from room temperature LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ undergoes a series of subtle structural transitions which can be summarised as follows: second order commensurate tetragonal ($P4/nmm$)-to-incommensurate structure followed by a first order incommensurate-to-commensurate orthorhombic ($Pmmn$) transition and then a first order commensurate orthorhombic ($Pmmn$)-to-commensurate tetragonal ($P4/nmm$). The structural transitions are accompanied by both incommensurate and commensurate superstructural distortions of the lattice. The observed behavior is compatible with discommensuration of the CDW in this material.

By means of diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering (DS,IXS), we probe directly the charge-ordering (CO) dynamics in the Verwey system (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, where a peculiar quadruple perovskite structure with no oxygen disorder stabilizes a nearly full Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ static charge order at $T_{\rm CO}$=175 K concomitant to a commensurate structural modulation with propagation vector ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}=(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},0)$. At $T_{\rm CO}$, the IXS spectra unveil a softening of a 35.3 meV phonon at ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}$. Lattice dynamical calculations enable us to attribute this soft phonon to a A$_g$ mode whose polarization matches the Jahn-Teller-like distortion pattern of the structural modulation. This result demonstrates that the Jahn-Teller instability is the driving force of the CO Verwey transition in (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, thus elucidating a long-standing controversy regarding the mechanism of this transition observed in other mixed-valence systems like magnetite.

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate thin films, we report on a synthesis and magnetization study on bulk samples of the parent compounds ${R}$NiO$_{2}$ (${R}$=La, Pr, Nd). The frequency-dependent peaks of the AC magnetic susceptibility, along with remarkable memory effects, characterize spin-glass states. Furthermore, various phenomenological parameters via different spin glass models show strong similarity within these three compounds as well as with other rare-earth metal nickelates. The universal spin-glass behaviour distinguishes the nickelates from the parent compound CaCuO$_{2}$ of cuprate superconductors, which has the same crystal structure and $d^9$ electronic configuration but undergoes a long-range antiferromagnetic order. We optimised the magnetic field homogeneity of two canonical designs for mobile microfluidic NMR applications: two parallel magnets with an air gap and a modified Halbach array. Along with the influence of the sample length, general design guidelines will be presented. For a fair comparison the sensitive length of the sample has been chosen to be the same as the gap size between the magnets to ensure enough space for the transmitting and receiving unit, as well as basic electric shimming components. Keeping the compactness of the final device in mind, a box with an edge length 5 times the gap size has been defined, in which the complete magnet configuration should fit. With the chosen boundary conditions, the simple parallel cuboid configuration reaches the best homogeneity without active shimming (0.5$\mathrm{B_{s}}$, 41 ppm), while the Pseudo-Halbach configuration has the highest field strength (0.9$\mathrm{B_{s}}$, 994 ppm), assuming perfect magnets. However, permanent magnet configurations suffer from imperfections, such as magnetisation, fabrication and positioning errors, which results in worse magnetic field homogeneities than expected from simulations using a fixed optimised parameter set. We present a sensitivity analysis for a magnetic cube and the results of studies of the variations in the magnetisation and angle of magnetisation of magnets purchased from different suppliers, composed of different materials and coatings, and of different sizes. We performed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation on the effect of the measured distribution of magnetic properties on the mentioned configurations. The cuboid design shows a mean homogeneity of 430 ppm (std dev. 350 ppm), the Pseudo-Halbach has a mean homogeneity of 1086 ppm (std dev. 8 ppm)., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables

By means of magnetic, specific heat and pyroelectric measurements, we report on magnetic ferroelectricity in the quadruple perovskite \namno, characterized by a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) CE structure. Surprisingly, ferroelectricity is concomitant to a dramatic broadening of the magnetic hysteresis loop, well below the AFM ordering temperature. This unconventional behavior shows that the formation of ferroelectric domains is induced by the symmetric exchange interaction in the local scale, e.g. at magnetic domain boundaries or defects. The value of electric polarization, $P = 0.027 \mu$C cm$^{-2}$, measured in polycrystalline samples is comparatively large as compared to other magnetic multiferroics, suggesting that the above scenario is promising indeed for the rational design of practical multiferroic materials., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

By means of pump-probe time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we provide evidence of a sizeable reduction of the Fermi velocity of out-of-equilibrium Dirac bands in the quasi-two-dimensional semimetal BaNiS$_2$. First-principle calculations indicate that this band renormalization is ascribed to a change in non-local electron correlations driven by a photo-induced enhancement of screening properties. This effect is accompanied by a slowing down of the Dirac fermions and by a non-rigid shift of the bands at the center of the Brillouin zone. This result suggests that other similar electronic structure renormalizations may be photoinduced in other materials in presence of strong non-local correlations.

By means of Shubnikov-de-Haas and de-Haas-van-Alphen oscillations, and ab initio calculations, we have studied the Fermi surface of high-quality BaNiS$_2$ single crystals, with mean free path $l \sim 400 ~\text{\AA}$. The angle and temperature dependence of quantum oscillations indicates a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface, made of an electron-like tube centred at $\Gamma$, and of 4 hole-like cones, generated by Dirac bands, weakly dispersive in the out-of-plane direction. Ab initio electronic structure calculations, in the density functional theory framework, show that the inclusion of screened exchange is necessary to account for the experimental Fermi pockets. Therefore, the choice of the functional becomes crucial. A modified HSE hybrid functional with 7% of exact exchange outperforms both GGA and GGA+U density functionals, signalling the importance of non-local screened-exchange interactions in BaNiS$_2$, and, more generally, in $3d$ compensated semimetals., Comment: 8 figures

We report on a systematic study of the thermodynamic, electronic and charge transport properties of high-quality single crystals of BaNiS$_2$, the metallic end-member of the quasi-twodimensional BaCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$S$_2$ system characterized by a metal-insulator transition at $x_{cr}=0.22$. Our analysis of magnetoresistivity and specific heat data consistently suggests a picture of compensated semimetal with two hole- and one electron-bands, where electron-phonon scattering dominates charge transport and the minority holes exhibit, below $\sim$100 K, a very large mobility, $\mu_h\sim$ 15000 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$, which is explained by a Dirac-like band. Evidence of unconventional metallic properties is given by an intriguing crossover of the resistivity from a Bloch-Gr\"uneisen regime to a linear$-T$ regime occurring at 2 K and by a strong linear term in the paramagnetic susceptibility above 100 K. We discuss the possibility that these anomalies reflect a departure from conventional Fermi-liquid properties in presence of short-range AF fluctuations and of a large Hund coupling., Comment: 21 pages 9 figures (colors)

We present the single-crystalline x-ray diffraction study on the Ba4Ru3O10 consisting of the corner-shared Ru3O12 trimers. The crystal structure is re-determined from 78 to 300 K across an antiferromagnetic transition at 105 K. The orthorhombic symmetry (Cmca, space group No. 64) is preserved at all temperatures measured. This structure presents exceptionally long Ru-O distances characterized by a significant distribution within the Ru3O12 trimer. A bond valence sum calculation suggests that the charge disproportionation within the Ru3O12 trimer emerges even at room temperature, which we ascribe to molecular orbital formation in the Ru3O12 trimer, as supported by recent theoretical calculations. Based on the analyzed crystal structure, the electronic states and the nature of the phase transition at 105 K are discussed., Comment: 7pages, 6 figures
