15. Once Common, Long in Decline: Dynamics of Traditional Orchards in a Central European Landscape.

Abstract

Traditional orchards are distinctive features of cultural landscapes in Central Europe. Despite their high level of ecological importance, they are in decline, and comprehensive spatial data over broad extents, which could enable a trend analysis, are lacking. We analysed traditional orchard maps from 1952 to 1967 and a map from 2010, generated via aerial image interpretation, for the state of Hesse (ca. 21,115 km2), which has the second largest share of traditional orchards in Germany. We aimed to (1) quantify long-term orchard dynamics, (2) compare orchard characteristics in terms of topographical, ecological, and socioeconomic factors, and (3) identify key drivers of orchard loss. We found that the number and area of orchards have clearly decreased across Hesse, with varying local and regional patterns. Further, historically old orchards tended to have a larger area, higher shape complexity, and were located closer to settlements, highways, and neighbouring orchards. In contrast, newly established orchards were often found at higher elevations and on steeper slopes. Finally, the three historical orchard hotspots also experienced the most notable losses driven by different factors, namely the expansion of Artificial Surfaces, Residential Buildings, and Agricultural Land. We highlight the importance of such multitemporal spatial data for a wide range of ecological applications, and we encourage the use of novel technologies to support geospatial analyses in the future. Abstract

Current diversity and species composition of ecological communities can often not exclusively be explained by present land use and landscape structure. Historical land use may have considerably influenced ecosystems and their properties for decades and centuries. We analysed the effects of present and historical landscape structure on plant and arthropod species richness in temperate grasslands, using data from comprehensive plant and arthropod assessments across three regions in Germany and maps of current and historical land cover from three time periods between 1820 and 2016. We calculated local, grassland class and landscape scale metrics for 150 grassland plots. Class and landscape scale metrics were calculated in buffer zones of 100 to 2000 m around the plots. We considered effects on total species richness as well as on the richness of species subsets determined by taxonomy and functional traits related to habitat use, dispersal and feeding. Overall, models containing a combination of present and historical landscape metrics showed the best fit for several functional groups. Comparing three historical time periods, data from the 1820/50s was among the most frequent significant time periods in our models (29.7% of all significant variables). Our results suggest that the historical landscape structure is an important predictor of current species richness across different taxa and functional groups. This needs to be considered to better identify priority sites for conservation and to design biodiversity-friendly land use practices that will affect landscape structure in the future.

Abstract

Biodiversity typically increases multiple ecosystem functions simultaneously (multifunctionality) but variation in the strength and direction of biodiversity effects between studies suggests context dependency. To determine how different factors modulate the diversity effect on multifunctionality, we established a large grassland experiment manipulating plant species richness, resource addition, functional composition (exploitative vs. conservative species), functional diversity and enemy abundance. We measured ten above- and belowground functions and calculated ecosystem multifunctionality. Species richness and functional diversity both increased multifunctionality, but their effects were context dependent. Richness increased multifunctionality when communities were assembled with fast-growing species. This was because slow species were more redundant in their functional effects, whereas different fast species promoted different functions. Functional diversity also increased multifunctionality but this effect was dampened by nitrogen enrichment and enemy presence. Our study suggests that a shift towards fast-growing communities will not only alter ecosystem functioning but also the strength of biodiversity-functioning relationships.

Abstract

Grasslands, they are globally endangered ecosystems. In Green Infrastructure, for instance, river dikes and landfills, ecosystem services can be combined with biodiversity. Successful restoration of species-rich grasslands requires a suitable combination of seed mixtures and substrates. Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted with different seed–substrate combinations. Older river dikes were monitored over five years. Dike grasslands can reconcile biodiversity with ecosystem services like dike security, conservation, recreation, and biomass production., Wiesen sind ein weltweit gefährdetes Ökosystem. In der Grünen Infrastruktur können Ökosystemleistungen mit Biodiversität kombiniert werden. Die erfolgreiche Renaturierung von artenreichem Grünland erfordert eine geeignete Kombination von Saatgutmischungen und Substraten. Es wurden dazu Versuche mit verschiedenen Saatgut-Substrat-Kombinationen durchgeführt und ältere Flussdeiche wurden begutachtet. Deichgrünland kann die Biodiversität mit Ökosystemleistungen wie Deichsicherheit, Naturschutz, Erholung und Biomasseproduktion kombiniert werden.

40. iPhenology : Using open-access citizen science photos to track phenology at continental scale

Abstract

Photo observations are a highly valuable but rarely used source of citizen science (CS) data. Recently, the number of publicly available photo observations has increased strongly, for example, due to the use of smartphone applications for species identification. This has enabled the raising of ecological insights in poorly studied subjects. One of the fields with the highest potential to benefit from the use of photo observations is phenology. We propose a workflow for iPhenology, the use of publicly available photo observations to track phenological events at large scales. The workflow comprises data acquisition, cleaning of observations, phenological classification and modelling spatiotemporal patterns of phenology. We explore the suitability of iPhenology to observe key phenological stages in the plant reproductive cycle of a model species and discuss limitations and future prospects of the approach using the example of an invasive species in Europe. We show that iPhenology is suitable to track key phenological events of widespread species. However, the number and quality of available observations may differ among species and phenological stages. Overall, publicly available CS photo observations are suitable to track key phenological events and can thus significantly advance the knowledge on the timing and drivers of plant phenology. In future, integrating the workflow with automated image processing and analysis may enable real-time tracking of plant phenology.

Abstract

Experimental evidence shows that grassland plant diversity enhances ecosystem functioning. Yet, the transfer of results from controlled biodiversity experiments to naturally assembled ‘real world’ ecosystems remains challenging due to environmental variation among sites, confounding biodiversity ecosystem functioning relations in observational studies. To bridge the gap between classical biodiversity-ecosystem functioning experiments and observational studies of naturally assembled and managed ecosystems, we created regionally replicated, within-site gradients of species richness by seeding across agricultural grasslands differing in land-use intensity (LUI) and abiotic site conditions. Within each of 73 grassland sites, we established a full-factorial experiment with high-diversity seeding and topsoil disturbance and measured 12 ecosystem functions related to productivity, and carbon and nutrient cycling after 4 years. We then analysed the effects of plant diversity (seeded richness as well as realized richness), functional community composition, land use and abiotic conditions on the ecosystem functions within (local scale) as well as among grassland sites (landscape scale). Despite the successful creation of a within-site gradient in plant diversity (average increase in species richness in seeding treatments by 10%–35%), we found that only one to two of the 12 ecosystem functions responded to realized species richness, resulting in more closed nitrogen cycles in more diverse plant communities. Similar results were found when analysing the effect of the seeding treatment instead of realized species richness. Among sites, ecosystem functioning was mostly driven by environmental conditions and LUI. Also here, the only functions related to plant species richness were those associated with a more closed nitrogen cycle under increased diversity. Abstract

Biodiversity typically increases multiple ecosystem functions simultaneously (multifunctionality) but variation in the strength and direction of biodiversity effects between studies suggests context dependency. To determine how different factors modulate the diversity effect on multifunctionality, we established a large grassland experiment manipulating plant species richness, resource addition, functional composition (exploitative vs. conservative species), functional diversity and enemy abundance. We measured ten above‐ and belowground functions and calculated ecosystem multifunctionality. Species richness and functional diversity both increased multifunctionality, but their effects were context dependent. Richness increased multifunctionality when communities were assembled with fast‐growing species. This was because slow species were more redundant in their functional effects, whereas different fast species promoted different functions. Functional diversity also increased multifunctionality but this effect was dampened by nitrogen enrichment and enemy presence. Our study suggests that a shift towards fast‐growing communities will not only alter ecosystem functioning but also the strength of biodiversity‐functioning relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In northwest Germany, over 2,000 km² of peatland area have been destroyed or significantly degraded through drainage and subsequent agricultural use or peat extraction. This loss of habitat has been accompanied by the decline of many rare and highly specialized animal and plant species. Additionally, peatlands serve as long-term carbon sinks or, in a degraded state, as significant sources of greenhouse gases, making the restoration of peatlands increasingly important for climate protection. In the past 30 years, rewetting measures have been carried out on over 10,000 hectares of drained peatlands. Furthermore, in the coming years, over one-third of the 26,000 hectares of industrial peat extraction areas in Lower Saxony will be taken out of use and rewetted. However, there is currently no up-to-date guideline for restoration practices in northwest Germany, and the approach strongly depends on the knowledge of the individuals involved. Moreover, the current restoration practice relies on relatively short-term success monitoring. On more than 50 rewetting sites in northwest Germany, as part of final theses and study projects, preliminary investigations have shown that most typical peatland plant species, especially Bulttorf mosses, are almost completely absent. Especially on previously agriculturally used areas, there are often dominant stands of common reed. Besides partially unsuitable or not yet stable site conditions (hydrology, nutrient supply), this is primarily due to a lack of dispersal. The medium- to long-term goal of this project is to overcome this limitation and actively introduce typical peatland plant species, especially the Bulttorf mosses that are important for peat formation, into rewetting areas. This aims to promote these often rare species and accelerate the development of the areas towards living and peat-forming peatlands. This is a joint project of Gramoflor GmbH & Co. Abstract

Restoration of floodplain meadows remains a challenge, as many degraded sites suffer from seed limitation. The transfer of seed-containing plant material from species-rich donor sites is a widely used method to restore semi-natural grasslands. However, most studies on the success of such restoration projects comprise limited time frames. As factors determining restoration success may only become evident after many years, long-term observations are crucial. We re-investigated 20 restored grassland sites in the floodplain of the Northern Upper Rhine 13–16 years after plant material transfer with different soil preparation treatments. To this end, we carried out vegetation surveys on 254 permanent plots and studied the potential influence of soil preparation, soil nutrients, and hydrology on plant species composition, diversity, and transfer of target species. Since sustainable agricultural use is important to ensure the long-term stability of restored semi-natural grasslands, we further investigated biomass productivity and feeding value. While most target species increased in frequency or remained stable over time, we found no positive long-term effect of soil preparation on vegetation development and target species establishment. Instead, increased biomass yield and flooding frequency led to reduced restoration success, while higher soil C/N ratios had a positive effect. Overall, restoration measures did not affect the agricultural value of the restored grasslands, which had higher dry matter biomass yields compared with the donor sites. Our results indicate that the positive effect of soil preparation on the number and cover of target species, which is regularly reported in short-term studies, diminishes over time, and other factors such as site conditions become increasingly important. Furthermore, additional plant material transfer or manual seeding may be necessary to support target species establishment. Concerning agricultural usability, the integration of restored floodplain meadows in farming systems is possible and can ensure long-term management and thus stability of these ecosystems. Our study shows that long-term monitoring of restoration projects is necessary, as factors determining restoration success may only become evident in the long-term.
