In the H2020 project 'Satellite-borne and INsitu Observations to Predict The Initiation of Convection for ATM' (SINOPTICA), an air traffic controller support system was extended to organize approaching traffic even under severe weather conditions. During project runtime, traffic days with extreme weather events in the Po Valley were analyzed, an arrival manager was extended with a module for 4D diversion trajectory calculation, two display variants for severe weather conditions in an air traffic controller primary display were developed, and the airport Milano Malpensa was modelled for an air traffic simulation. On the meteorological side, three new forecasting techniques were developed to better nowcast weather events affecting tactical air traffic operations and used to automatically organize arrival traffic. Additionally, short-range weather forecasts with high spatial resolution were elaborated using radar-based nowcasting and a numerical weather prediction model with data assimilation. This nowcast information was integrated into the extended arrival manager for the sequencing and guiding of approaching aircraft even in adverse weather situations. The combination of fast and reliable weather nowcasts with a guidance support system enables severe weather diversion coordination in combination with a visualization of its dynamics on traffic situation displays.

We fabricated a simple sensor system for qualitative analysis of glycan-mediated interactions. Our main aim was to establish a ronbbust system that allowes drop-tests without complex fluidics. The test system should be usable in routine analytics in the future and bear sufficient sensitivity to detect binding events in the nanomolar range. For this, we employed optical ring resonators and coated them with high avidity glycopolymers based on N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). These hydrophilic polymers are also very feasible in preventing unspecific protein adsorption. Drop-on binding studies with suitable lectins showed that glycopolymers were specifically recognized by a lectin with GlcNAc-specificity and prevented unspecific protein interactions very well. The system could be elaborated in the future for detection of glycan-mediated interactions in the biomedical field and is promising in means of multiplexed analysis and usage in routine analysis.

Blending on-chip ultrathin-film elements, nonlinear crystals, polymer interposers, and single-photon detectors, the UNIQORN project aims to develop a quantum system-on-chip methodology that brings low-cost assembly to the field of quantum optics.

In air traffic control rooms around the world paper flight strips are replaced through different digital solutions. This enables other systems to access the instructed air traffic controller (ATCo) commands and use them for other purposes. Digital flight strip solutions, however, require manual input from the ATCo and, therefore, increase the workload. Recently the AcListant® project has validated that Assistant Based Speech Recognition (ABSR, which integrates a speech recognizer with an assistant system) could be a solution to avoid this increase of workload. However, adaptation of ABSR to new environments usually requires a lot of data, time and expertise, which makes the process expensive. The MALORCA project used machine learning (ML) algorithms to provide a generic, cheap and effective approach for adaptation. Therefore, ABSR was divided into conceptual modules that contain generic parts (building blocks) and domain specific models. As first show case ABSR was auto-matically adapted with radar data and voice recordings from Prague and Vienna approach. The fully trained system reaches command recognition rates (RR) of 92% (Prague) resp. 83% (Vienna) and command recognition error rates (ER) of 0.6% (Prague) resp. 3.2% (Vienna). The building blocks and models and their effect on RR and ER are presented in this paper.

Microtubular optical resonators are monolithically integrated on photonic chips to demonstrate optofluidic functionality. Due to the compact subwavelength-thin tube wall and a well-defined nanogap between polymer photonic waveguides and the microtube, excellent optical coupling with extinction ratios up to 32 dB are observed in the telecommunication relevant wavelength range. For the first time, optofluidic applications of fully on-chip integrated microtubular systems are investigated both by filling the core of the microtube and by the microtube being covered by a liquid droplet. Total shifts over the full free spectral range are observed in response to the presence of the liquid medium in the vicinity of the microtube resonators. This work provides a vertical coupling scheme for optofluidic applications in monolithically integrated so-called "lab-ina- tube" systems.

We present a fiber-coupled transceiver for THz time-domain spectroscopy, which combines an emitter and a receiver on a single photoconductive chip. With a bandwidth of 4.5 THz and a peak dynamic range larger than 70 dB, it allows for THz reflection measurements under normal incidence. This THz reflection head is a promising device for applications in such fields as material inspection and nondestructive testing.

Recently developed photonic components for next-generation datacenter systems based on HHI´s PolyBoard integration platform are reviewed. Hybrid-integrated transmitters and receivers, including optical functionalities such as tunable lasers, polarization manipulators, 1x2 switches and variable optical attenuators, are presented. The flexibility of those devices provides the possibility of generating, routing and detecting multiple optical data flows, offering the potential of aggregating traffics of 1 Tb/s and beyond. In addition, vertically-stacked polymer waveguide structures are presented, opening the way towards the third dimension in photonic integration and allowing increasing the transmission capacity beyond the physical limit of standard single mode fibers. The freedom in the arrangement of the polymer waveguides allow for the matching to different multi-core fiber types, providing the possibility of processing in parallel the different optical flows. By means of micro-machining 45° mirrors on the different stack levels, the 3D stacked waveguide structure can act as an interface between multi-core fibers and planar optoelectronic devices such as photodiodes and laser diodes. Furthermore, a novel concept for a 4x4 three-dimensional optical switch based on 3D multi-mode interferometers is presented and numerically proven, showing potential for its application as interface between multi-core fibers and planar optoelectronic devices, as well as offering the possibility of reconfigurable NxN switching matrices.

A novel method of converting lignin and lignin-rich residues by hydro-deoxygenation in a formic acid/alcohol reaction medium has been further investigated in terms of fuel properties. Results from upscaling from 5 mL lab scale reactors to a 1 L reactor show positive results in terms of gas composition and transferability to a larger scale. Minor changes in the molecular weight distribution are found in ESI-MS spectra of the products from the two reactors, but the major products are in both cases within the boiling point range of gasoline and diesel. Fuel quality parameters also show positive results relative to motor fuel use.
