Abstract

This edited volume offers an insightful theoretical conceptualization of issues central to 21st century foreign language learning and teaching. Drawing on research results obtained in the fields of pedagogy, social psychology and sociology of education, this book provides a comprehensive practical exploration of issues experienced by researchers in Poland and in Europe, and which can easily find far-reaching implications in other educational contexts. Part I, "Focus on the Teacher," includes seven texts discussing topics relevant to teacher initial and in-service education, as well as the functioning of foreign language instructors in educational systems. The eight contributions included in Part II, "Focus on the Learner," explore learner-internal and learner-external factors that affect the effectiveness of the language learning process. 4. The Effects of a Token Economy System to Improve Social and Academic Behavior with a Rural Primary Aged Child with Disabilities

Abstract

The purpose of the present case report was to evaluate the effects of an individual token economy with a young child with severe behavior disorders. Three behaviors were recorded; time to completion, the number of assignments completed, and the frequency of inappropriate behavior. These data were gathered for 30 minutes each morning. The overall outcomes indicated that the two different token systems were effective in improving the participant's academic and social behavior. The amount of work that was required could be increased without a large decrement in academic output or increases in inappropriate behavior. The program was enjoyed by both the teaching staff and the participant. Suggestions for future research and the maintenance of treatment gains were made. (Contains 3 figures.)

Abstract

This study reports on EFL student teachers' opinions, beliefs and their self-awareness of developing 21st century skills, particularly the 4Cs: critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, in the Polish educational context. A questionnaire designed for the purpose of this study was administered to 53 participants who were all student teachers of English enrolled in bachelor's and master's degree programmes. The survey results indicate that although the majority of the participants showed a low level of understanding of what 21st century skills are, they were fairly positive about integrating them into foreign language classroom instruction. At the same time, the teacher trainees tended to overrate their own abilities to develop the 4Cs in their future students. These findings suggest a greater need to raise FL teachers' awareness as to the implementation of particular 21st century skills in the classroom. It is also postulated that enhancing such skills among student teachers in the course of teacher training is a prerequisite for 21st century skills-oriented pedagogy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
