The purpose of this paper is two-fold: (1) to assess the extent to which adolescent girls' sex role expectations reflect traditional or egalitarian concepts of marriage and career roles as evidenced in a longitudinal design; and (2) to compare both the adolescents' role projections and their subsequent enactment to the educational attainment and life style of the subjects' mothers. A three-part self-administered questionnaire was administered to two sample populations consisting of (a) 113 twelfth grade girls, designated as being the female population in the upper one-half of their l967 graduating class; and (b) 80 of the original 113, eight years later. The findings support the contention that familial sex roles are perceived as egalitarian and that a social trend is in progress toward more egalitarian role definitions. The longitudinal data indicated that adolescents who in 1967 projected egalitarian roles were consistent with their pridictions. When the subjects' role projections were compared with the educational level and occupational status of their mothers, a correlation was revealed which suggested that the subjects not only perceived marital and career roles as egalitarian, but also were living egalitarian lives.
