In transition-metal compounds, the transition-metal d electrons play an important role in their physical properties; however, the effects of the electron correlation between the ligand p electrons have not been clear yet. In this Letter, the Ru 4d and O 2p partial density of states (PDOS) in transition-metal oxide SrRuO$_3$ involving Weyl fermions are investigated by resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The observations demonstrate that the O 2p PDOS is distorted from that predicted by first-principles calculations than the Ru 4d PDOS. The results indicate that the electron correlation in the ligand orbitals will be important to understand the electronic structure of the p-d hybridized state in strongly correlated electron systems, even with topological states., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

The burgeoning fields of spintronics and topological electronics require materials possessing a unique combination of properties: ferromagnetism, metallicity, and chemical stability. SrRuO3 (SRO) stands out as a compelling candidate due to its exceptional combination of these attributes. However, understanding its behavior under tensile strain, especially its thickness-dependent changes, remains elusive. This study employs machine-learning-assisted molecular beam epitaxy to investigate SRO films with thicknesses from 1 to 10 nm. This work complements the existing focus on compressive-strained SRO, opening a new avenue for exploring its hitherto concealed potential. Using soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we uncover an intriguing interplay between film thickness, electronic structure, and magnetic properties. Our key findings reveal an intensified localization of Ru 4d t2g-O 2p hybridized states at lower thicknesses, attributed to the weakened orbital hybridization. Furthermore, we find a progressive reduction of magnetic moments for both Ru and O ions as film thickness decreases. Notably, a non-ferromagnetic insulating state emerges at a critical thickness of 1 nm, marking a pivotal transition from the metallic ferromagnetic phase. These insights emphasize the importance of considering thickness-dependent properties when tailoring SRO for next-generation spintronic and topological electronic devices.

Recent studies have shown that the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic perovskite oxide La$_{2/3}$ Sr$_{1/3}$ MnO$_3$ (LSMO) grown on an SrTiO3 (STO) substrate, such as its magnetic moment and Curie temperature, can be improved by releasing the film from the substrate. However, the microscopic origin of this enhancement is not yet well understood. In this study, we use synchrotron radiation measurements to investigate the mechanism of ferromagnetism enhancement in an LSMO membrane released from an STO substrate by dissolving a water-soluble Sr$_4$Al$_2$O$_7$ buffer layer. Using resonant photoemission spectroscopy on the as-grown LSMO film and LSMO membrane, we elucidate that the strain release from the STO substrate enhances the itineracy of the Mn-3d electrons via p-d hybridization, and this strengthens the double-exchange interaction. The reinforcement of the double-exchange interaction, in turn, improves the ferromagnetism of LSMO.

Two-dimensional (2D) systems, such as high-temperature superconductors, surface states of topological insulators, and layered materials, have been intensively studied using vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In semiconductor films (heterostructures), quantum well (QW) states arise due to electron/hole accumulations at the surface (interface). The quantized states due to quantum confinement can be observed by VUV-ARPES, while the periodic intensity modulations along the surface normal (kz) direction of these quantized states are also observable by varying incident photon energy, resembling three-dimensional (3D) band dispersion. We have conducted soft X-ray (SX) ARPES measurements on thick and ultrathin III-V semiconductor InSb(001) films to investigate the electronic dimensionality reduction in semiconductor QWs. In addition to the dissipation of the kz dispersion, the SX-ARPES observations demonstrate the changes of the symmetry and periodicity of the Brillouin zone in the ultrathin film as 2D QW compared with these of the 3D bulk one, indicating the electronic dimensionality reduction of the 3D bulk band dispersion caused by the quantum confinement. The results provide a critical diagnosis using SX-ARPES for the dimensionality reduction in semiconductor QW structures.

Diamond-type structure allotrope {\alpha}-Sn is attracting much attention as a topological Dirac semimetal (TDS). In this study, we demonstrate that {\alpha}-Sn undergoes a phase transition to another allotrope {\beta}-Sn with superconductivity at low temperature by irradiating with a focused Ga ion beam (FIB). To clarify the transition mechanism, we performed X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements on an {\alpha}-Sn thin film irradiated with FIB and an as-grown {\alpha}-Sn thin film. The XPS results suggest that the local annealing, which is one of the side effects of FIB, causes the transformation from {\alpha}-Sn into {\beta}-Sn. Furthermore, the difference in the chemical states between {\alpha}-Sn and {\beta}-Sn can be quantitatively explained by the crystal structures rather than the degree of metallicity reflecting the conductivity. These results propose a new way of fabricating TDS/superconductor in-plane heterostructures based on {\alpha}-Sn and {\beta}-Sn., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

The origin of magnetic anisotropy in magnetic compounds is a longstanding issue in solid state physics and nonmagnetic ligand ions are considered to contribute little to magnetic anisotropy. Here, we introduce the concept of ligand driven magnetic anisotropy in a complex transition-metal oxide. We conducted X ray absorption and X ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopies at the Ru and O edges in the 4d ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3. Systematic variation of the sample thickness in the range below 10 nm allowed us to control the localization of Ru 4d t2g states, which affects the magnetic coupling between the Ru and O ions. We found that the orbital magnetization of the ligand induced via hybridization with the Ru 4d orbital determines the magnetic anisotropy in SrRuO3.

Superconductor/topological material heterostructures are intensively studied as a platform for topological superconductivity and Majorana physics. However, the high cost of nanofabrication and the difficulty of preparing high-quality interfaces between the two dissimilar materials are common obstacles that hinder the observation of intrinsic physics and the realisation of scalable topological devices and circuits. Here, we demonstrate an innovative method to directly draw nanoscale superconducting beta-tin (beta-Sn) patterns of any shape in the plane of a topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) alpha-tin (alpha-Sn) thin film by irradiating a focused ion beam (FIB). We utilise the property that alpha-Sn undergoes a phase transition to superconducting beta-Sn upon heating by FIB. In beta-Sn nanowires embedded in a TDS alpha-Sn thin film, we observe giant non-reciprocal superconducting transport, where the critical current changes by 69% upon reversing the current direction. The superconducting diode rectification ratio reaches a maximum when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the current, distinguishing itself from all the previous reports. Moreover, it oscillates between alternate signs with increasing magnetic field strength. The angular dependence of the rectification ratio on the magnetic field and current directions is similar to that of the chiral anomaly effect in TDS alpha-Sn, suggesting that the non-reciprocal superconducting transport may occur at the beta-Sn/alpha-Sn interfaces. The ion-beam patterned Sn-based superconductor/TDS planar structures thus show promise as a universal platform for investigating novel quantum physics and devices based on topological superconducting circuits of any shape., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

The existence of rich Fermiology in anomalous metal phase in exotic superconductors has attracted considerable interests, as exemplified in copper, iron-based, and intermetallic frustrated kagome-based compounds. A common feature in these cases is pseudo-gap opening or long-range lattice/electronic ordering above superconducting critical temperature Tc. As yet developed area is the potential existence of exotic Fermiology in superconducting transition metal oxides on a geometrically frustrated lattice. Here, we focus on the spinel oxide superconductor LiTi2O4, which can be viewed as the hole-doped side of the orbital ordered 3d1 Mott system on the Ti-derived pyrochlore frustrated network. By the in-situ combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and epitaxial thin film growth, we discovered the abrupt flattening of near Fermi energy dispersion below the characteristic temperature T* ~ 150 K. While the emergent negative thermal expansion below T* strongly supports a distinct phase at low-temperature, absence of energy gap opening, splitting/folding of bands, nor long-range lattice distortion are seen across T*. We propose that the competition between growing instability towards orbital ordering and its inherent geometric frustration in the Ti-pyrochlore network results in a new quantum state of matter with robust high entropic nature below T*. Our findings collectively point to a unique Fermiology in frustrated three-dimensional transition metal oxides, and its connection to superconductivity below Tc is open as an interesting future challenge. Also, a potential guideline is unexpectedly provided for designing zero thermal expansion metal to develop future solid-state devices.

Photoemission spectroscopy, an experimental method based on the photoelectric effect, is now an indispensable technique used in various fields such as materials science, life science, medicine, and nanotechnology. However, part of the experimental process of photoemission spectroscopy relies on experience and intuition, which is difficult to understand for novice users. In particular, photoemission spectroscopy experiments using high-brilliance synchrotron radiation as a light source are not easy for novice users because the measurements must be performed quickly and accurately as scheduled within a limited experimental period. In addition, research on the application of information science methods to quantum data measurement, such as photoemission spectroscopy, is mainly aimed at the development of analysis methods, and few attempts have been made to clarify the problems faced by users who lack experience. In this study, we identified the problems faced by novice users of photoemission spectroscopy, implemented a native application with functions to solve these problems, and evaluated it qualitatively and quantitatively. Epitaxially strained SrRuO3 films have been a model system for understanding the magnetic anisotropy in metallic oxides. In this paper, we investigate the anisotropy of the Ru 4d and O 2p electronic structure and magnetic properties using high-quality epitaxially strained (compressive and tensile) SrRuO3 films grown by machine-learning-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The element-specific magnetic properties and the hybridization between the Ru 4d and O 2p orbitals were characterized by Ru M2,3-edge and O K-edge soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The magnetization curves for the Ru 4d and O 2p magnetic moments are identical, irrespective of the strain type, indicating the strong magnetic coupling between the Ru and O ions. The electronic structure and the orbital magnetic moment relative to the spin magnetic moment are isotropic despite the perpendicular and in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the compressive-strained and tensile-strained SrRuO3 films; i.e., the orbital magnetic moments have a negligibly small contribution to the magnetic anisotropy. This result contradicts Bruno model, where magnetic anisotropy arises from the difference in the orbital magnetic moment between the perpendicular and in-plane directions. Contributions of strain-induced electric quadrupole moments to the magnetic anisotropy are discussed, too.

Fe-doped III-V ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) (In,Fe)Sb is a promising material for spintronic device applications because of the n-type carrier conduction and the ferromagnetism with high Curie temperature (TC > 300 K). To clarify the mechanism of the high-TC ferromagnetism, we have investigated the electronic structure and magnetic properties of an (In,Fe)Sb thin film by performing x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L2,3 edges. The magnetic-field dependence of the XMCD spectra reveals that there are ferromagnetic-like Fe and paramagnetic-like Fe components in the (In,Fe)Sb thin film. The XAS and XMCD spectra of the ferromagnetic-like and paramagnetic-like Fe components resemble those of other Fe-doped FMSs and extrinsic oxides, respectively. The finite value of the ratio between the orbital and spin magnetic moments estimated by applying the XMCD sum rules indicates that the valence state of the Fe ions substituting for the In sites in (In,Fe)Sb is not purely ionic Fe3+, but intermediate between Fe3+ and Fe2+. The qualitative correspondence between the magnetic-field dependence of the visible-light magnetic circular dichroism intensity and that of the XMCD intensity demonstrates that the Zeeman splitting of the InSb band is proportional to the net magnetization of the doped Fe. These results suggest that the ferromagnetism of (In,Fe)Sb originates from the Fe 3d orbitals hybridized with the host InSb bands., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

We report chirality-induced current-in-plane magnetoresistance (CIP-MR) in chiral molecule/ferromagnetic metal bilayer at room temperature. The previously reported chiralityinduced current-perpendicular-to-plane magnetoresistance (CPP-MR) originates from the chiral induced spin-selectivity (CISS) effect that needs charge-current passing through the molecule. In contrast, the observed CIP-MR in the present study requires no bias charge current through the molecule. The temperature dependence of CIP-MR suggests thermally induced spin-polarization in the chiral molecules is the key for the observed MR., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Fe-doped III-V ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs) such as (In,Fe)As, (Ga,Fe)Sb, (In,Fe)Sb, and (Al,Fe)Sb are promising materials for spintronic device applications because of the availability of both n- and p-type materials and the high Curie temperatures. On the other hand, (Ga,Fe)As, which has the same zinc-blende crystal structure as the Fe-doped III-V FMSs, shows paramagnetism. The origin of the different magnetic properties in the Fe-doped III-V semiconductors remains to be elucidated. To address this issue, we use resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of the Fe ions in a paramagnetic (Ga$_{0.95}$,Fe$_{0.05}$)As thin film. The observed Fe 2$p$-3$d$ RPES spectra show that the Fe 3$d$ states are similar to those of ferromagnetic (Ga,Fe)Sb. The estimated Fermi level is located in the middle of the band gap in (Ga,Fe)As. The Fe $L_{2,3}$ XMCD spectra of (Ga$_{0.95}$,Fe$_{0.05}$)As show pre-edge structures, which are not observed in the Fe-doped FMSs, indicating that the minority-spin ($\downarrow$) $e_\downarrow$ states are vacant in (Ga$_{0.95}$,Fe$_{0.05}$)As. The XMCD results suggest that the carrier-induced ferromagnetic interaction in (Ga$_{0.95}$,Fe$_{0.05}$)As is short-ranged and weaker than that in the Fe-doped FMSs. The experimental findings suggest that the electron occupancy of the $e_\downarrow$ states contributes to the appearance of ferromagnetism in the Fe-doped III-V semiconductors, for p-type as well as n-type compounds.

We investigated the Ru 4d and O 2p electronic structure and magnetic properties of an ultra-high-quality SrRuO3 film on SrTiO3 grown by machine-learning-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The high itinerancy and long quantum lifetimes of the quasiparticles in the Ru 4d t2g-O 2p hybridized valence band are confirmed by observing the prominent well-screened peak in the Ru 3d core-level photoemission spectrum, the coherent peak near the Fermi energy in the valence band spectrum, and quantum oscillations in the resistivity. The element-specific magnetic properties and the hybridization between the Ru 4d and O 2p orbitals were characterized by Ru M2,3-edge and O K-edge soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The ultra-high-quality SrRuO3 film with the residual resistivity ratio of 86 shows the large orbital magnetic moment of oxygen ions induced by the strong orbital hybridization of the O 2p states with the spin-polarized Ru 4d t2g states. The film also shows single-domain perpendicular magnetization with an almost ideal remanent magnetization ratio of 0.97. These results provide detailed insights into the relevance between orbital hybridization and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in SrRuO3/SrTiO3 systems.

Inter-valence charge transfer (IVCT) is electron transfer between two metal $M$ sites differing in oxidation states through a bridging ligand: $M^{n+1} + M'^{m} \rightarrow M^{n} + M'^{m+1}$. It is considered that IVCT is related to the hopping probability of electron (or the electron mobility) in solids. Since controlling the conductivity of ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs) is a key subject for the development of spintronic device applications, the manipulation of the conductivity through IVCT may become a new approach of band engineering in FMSs. In Ru-doped cobalt ferrite CoFe$_2$O$_4$ (CFO) that shows ferrimagnetism and semiconducting transport properties, the reduction of the electric resistivity is attributed to both the carrier doping caused by the Ru substitution for Co and the increase of the carrier mobility due to hybridization between the wide Ru $4d$ and the Fe $3d$ orbitals. The latter is the so-called IVCT mechanism that is charge transfer between the mixed valence Fe$^{2+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ states facilitated by bridging Ru $4d$ orbital: Fe$^{2+}$ + Ru$^{4+}$ $\leftrightarrow$ Fe$^{3+}$ + Ru$^{3+}$. To elucidate the emergence of the IVCT state, we have conducted x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) measurements on non-doped CFO and Co$_{0.5}$Ru$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$O$_4$ (CRFO) thin films. The observations of the XAS and RPES spectra indicate that the presence of the mixed valence Fe$^{2+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ state and the hybridization between the Fe $3d$ and Ru $4d$ states in the valence band. These results provide experimental evidence for the IVCT state in CRFO, demonstrating a novel mechanism that controls the electron mobility through hybridization between the $3d$ transition-metal cations with intervening $4d$ states., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Fundamental understanding of interfacial magnetic properties in ferromagnetic heterostructures is essential to utilize ferromagnetic materials for spintronic device applications. In this paper, we investigate the interfacial magnetic and electronic structures of epitaxial single-crystalline LaAlO$_3$ (LAO)/La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO)/Nb:SrTiO$_3$ (Nb:STO) heterostructures with varying LSMO-layer thickness, in which the magnetic anisotropy strongly changes depending on the LSMO thickness due to the delicate balance between the strains originating from both the Nb:STO and LAO layers, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES). We successfully detect the clear change of the magnetic behavior of the Mn ions concomitant with the thickness-dependent metal-insulator transition (MIT). Our results suggest that double-exchange interaction induces the ferromagnetism in the metallic LSMO film under tensile strain caused by the SrTiO$_3$ substrate, while superexchange interaction determines the magnetic behavior in the insulating LSMO film under compressive strain originating from the top LAO layer. Based on those findings, the formation of a magnetic dead layer near the LAO/LSMO interface is attributed to competition between the superexchange interaction via Mn 3$d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals under compressive strain and the double-exchange interaction via the 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Fully understanding the properties of n-type ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs), complementary to the mainstream p-type ones, is a challenging goal in semiconductor spintronics because ferromagnetism in n-type FMSs is theoretically non-trivial. Soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) is a powerful approach to examine the mechanism of carrier-induced ferromagnetism in FMSs. Here our SX-ARPES study on the prototypical n-type FMS (In,Fe)As reveals the entire band structure including the Fe-3d impurity bands (IBs) and the host InAs ones, and provides direct evidence for electron occupation of the InAs-derived conduction band (CB). A minority-spin Fe-3d IB is found to be located just below the conduction-band minimum (CBM). The IB is formed by the hybridization of the unoccupied Fe-3d states with the occupied CBM of InAs in a spin-dependent way, resulting in the large spin polarization of CB. The band structure with the IB is varied with band filling, which cannot be explained by the rigid-band picture, suggesting a unified picture for realization of carrier-induced ferromagnetism in FMS materials., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

(Ga$_{1-x}$,Fe$_x$)Sb is one of the promising ferromagnetic semiconductors for spintronic device applications because its Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$) is above 300 K when the Fe concentration $x$ is equal to or higher than ~0.20. However, the origin of the high $T_{\rm C}$ in (Ga,Fe)Sb remains to be elucidated. To address this issue, we use resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and first-principles calculations to investigate the $x$ dependence of the Fe 3$d$ states in (Ga$_{1-x}$,Fe$_x$)Sb ($x$ = 0.05, 0.15, and 0.25) thin films. The observed Fe 2$p$-3$d$ RPES spectra reveal that the Fe-3$d$ impurity band (IB) crossing the Fermi level becomes broader with increasing $x$, which is qualitatively consistent with the picture of double-exchange interaction. Comparison between the obtained Fe-3$d$ partial density of states and the first-principles calculations suggests that the Fe-3$d$ IB originates from the minority-spin ($\downarrow$) $e$ states. The results indicate that enhancement of the interaction between $e_\downarrow$ electrons with increasing $x$ is the origin of the high $T_{\rm C}$ in (Ga,Fe)Sb.

We build a system for worldwide COVID-19 information aggregation containing reliable articles from 10 regions in 7 languages sorted by topics. Our reliable COVID-19 related website dataset collected through crowdsourcing ensures the quality of the articles. A neural machine translation module translates articles in other languages into Japanese and English. Material structures containing tetrahedral FeAs bonds, depending on their density and geometrical distribution, can host several competing quantum ground states ranging from superconductivity to ferromagnetism. Here we examine structures of quasi two-dimensional (2D) layers of tetrahedral Fe-As bonds embedded with a regular interval in a semiconductor InAs matrix, which resembles the crystal structure of Fe-based superconductors. Contrary to the case of Fe-based pnictides, these FeAs/InAs superlattices (SLs) exhibit ferromagnetism, whose Curie temperature (Tc) increases rapidly with decreasing the InAs interval thickness t_InAs (Tc ~ t_InAs^-3), and an extremely large magnetoresistance up to 500% that is tunable by a gate voltage. Our first principles calculations reveal the important role of disordered positions of Fe atoms in the establishment of ferromagnetism in these quasi-2D FeAs-based SLs. These unique features mark the FeAs/InAs SLs as promising structures for spintronic applications.

SmO thin film is a new Kondo system showing a resistivity upturn around 10 K and was theoretically proposed to have a topologically nontrivial band structure. We have performed hard x-ray and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to elucidate the electronic structure of SmO. From the Sm 3$d$ core-level spectra, we have estimated the valence of Sm to be $\sim$2.96, proving that the Sm has a mixed valence. The valence-band photoemission spectra exhibit a clear Fermi edge originating from the Sm 5$d$-derived band. The present finding is consistent with the theory suggesting a possible topological state in SmO and show that rare-earth monoxides or their heterostructures can be a new playground for the interplay of strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling.
