6. Data Cleansing for Deep Neural Networks with Storage-efficient Approximation of Influence Functions

Abstract

Identifying the influence of training data for data cleansing can improve the accuracy of deep learning. An approach with stochastic gradient descent (SGD) called SGD-influence to calculate the influence scores was proposed, but, the calculation costs are expensive. It is necessary to temporally store the parameters of the model during training phase for inference phase to calculate influence sores. In close connection with the previous method, we propose a method to reduce cache files to store the parameters in training phase for calculating inference score. We only adopt the final parameters in last epoch for influence functions calculation. In our experiments on classification, the cache size of training using MNIST dataset with our approach is 1.236 MB. On the other hand, the previous method used cache size of 1.932 GB in last epoch. It means that cache size has been reduced to 1/1,563. We also observed the accuracy improvement by data cleansing with removal of negatively influential data using our approach as well as the previous method. Moreover, our simple and general proposed method to calculate influence scores is available on our auto ML tool without programing, Neural Network Console. The source code is also available.

While there exist a plethora of deep learning tools and frameworks, the fast-growing complexity of the field brings new demands and challenges, such as more flexible network design, speedy computation on distributed setting, and compatibility between different tools. In this paper, we introduce Neural Network Libraries (https://nnabla.org), a deep learning framework designed from engineer's perspective, with emphasis on usability and compatibility as its core design principles. Abstract

Understanding past and current trends is crucial in the fashion industry to forecast future market demands. This study quantifies and reports the characteristics of the trendy walking styles of fashion models during real-world runway performances using three cutting-edge technologies: (a) publicly available video resources, (b) human pose detection technology, and (c) multivariate human-movement analysis techniques. The skeletal coordinates of the whole body during one gait cycle, extracted from publicly available video resources of 69 fashion models, underwent principal component analysis to reduce the dimensionality of the data. Then, hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify the data. The results revealed that (1) the gaits of the fashion models analyzed in this study could be classified into five clusters, (2) there were significant differences in the median years in which the shows were held between the clusters, and (3) reconstructed stick-figure animations representing the walking styles of each cluster indicate that an exaggerated leg-crossing gait has become less common over recent years. Accordingly, we concluded that the level of leg crossing while walking is one of the major changes in trendy walking styles, from the past to the present, directed by the world's leading brands. 43. Wearable Device and Algorithm for Fall Prevention: Monitoring Fall Risk Using Foot Motion Measured by an In-Shoe Motion Sensor

Abstract

Falls are a significant public health concern worldwide, particularly for older adults. In this study, we aim to create an effective quantitative indicator for long-term daily fall risk assessment suitable for use with in-shoe motion sensors (IMSs). We used the likelihood of an individual being a faller (ranging from 0 to 1) as a representation of the quantitative fall risk indicator. This indicator was constructed using data from 40 nonfallers and 24 fallers, all female older adults with distal radius fractures (DRFs) caused by falls within 6 months (denoted as 0 and 1, respectively). The indicator was determined using Fisher’s discriminant, naïve Bayesian, or logistic regression approaches. Predictors were derived from four types of gait parameters and four types of physical ability metrics, all of which can be measured or estimated using IMS-measured gait. To prevent overfitting, we performed principal component analysis (PCA) on the predictors. To validate our method, we assessed Pearson’s correlation between clinical experts-rated fall risk scores and the constructed fall risk indicator using a separate group of 19 older female adults. The Pearson’s correlation obtained was 0.766. We successfully developed a fall risk indicator using IMS-measured gait, demonstrating the potential for IMSs to achieve long-term daily fall risk assessment.
