Insecticide resistance is a major problem in food production, environmental sustainability, and human health. The cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera is a globally distributed crop pest affecting over 300 crop species. H. armigera has rapidly evolved insecticide resistance, making it one of the most damaging pests worldwide. Understanding the genetic basis of insecticide resistance provides insights to develop tools, such as molecular markers, that can be used to slow or prevent the evolution of resistance. We explore the genetic architecture of H. armigera resistance to a widely used insecticide, flubendiamide, using two complementary approaches: genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in wild-caught samples and quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping in a controlled cross of susceptible and resistant laboratory strains. Both approaches identified one locus on chromosome 2, revealing two SNPs within 976 bp that can be used to monitor field resistance to flubendiamide. This was the only region identified using linkage mapping, though GWAS revealed additional sites associated with resistance. Other loci identified by GWAS in field populations contained known insecticide detoxification genes from the ATP-binding cassette family, ABCA1, ABCA3, ABCF2 and MDR1. Our findings revealed an oligogenic genetic architecture, contrasting previous reports of monogenic resistance associated with the ryanodine receptor. Inversions are thought to play a key role in adaptation and speciation, suppressing recombination between diverging populations. Genes influencing adaptive traits cluster in inversions, and changes in inversion frequencies are associated with environmental differences. However, in many organisms, it is unclear if inversions are geographically and taxonomically widespread. The intertidal snail, Littorina saxatilis, is one such example. Strong associations between putative polymorphic inversions and phenotypic differences have been demonstrated between two ecotypes of L. saxatilis in Sweden and inferred elsewhere, but no direct evidence for inversion polymorphism currently exists across the species range. Using whole genome data from 107 snails, most inversion polymorphisms were found to be widespread across the species range. The frequencies of some inversion arrangements were significantly different among ecotypes, suggesting a parallel adaptive role. Many inversions were also polymorphic in the sister species, L. arcana, hinting at an ancient origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sexual antagonism is a common hypothesis for driving the evolution of sex chromosomes, whereby recombination suppression is favored between sexually antagonistic loci and the sex‐determining locus to maintain beneficial combinations of alleles. This results in the formation of a sex‐determining region. Chromosomal inversions may contribute to recombination suppression but their precise role in sex chromosome evolution remains unclear. Because local adaptation is frequently facilitated through the suppression of recombination between adaptive loci by chromosomal inversions, there is potential for inversions that cover sex‐determining regions to be involved in local adaptation as well, particularly if habitat variation creates environment‐dependent sexual antagonism. With these processes in mind, we investigated sex determination in a well‐studied example of local adaptation within a species: the intertidal snail, Littorina saxatilis. Using SNP data from a Swedish hybrid zone, we find novel evidence for a female‐heterogametic sex determination system that is restricted to one ecotype. Our results suggest that four putative chromosomal inversions, two previously described and two newly discovered, span the putative sex chromosome pair. We determine their differing associations with sex, which suggest distinct strata of differing ages. The same inversions are found in the second ecotype but do not show any sex association. The striking disparity in inversion‐sex associations between ecotypes that are connected by gene flow across a habitat transition that is just a few meters wide indicates a difference in selective regime that has produced a distinct barrier to the spread of the newly discovered sex‐determining region between ecotypes. Such sex chromosome‐environment interactions have not previously been uncovered in L. saxatilis and are known in few other organisms. We studied the door‐snail genus Alopia in the Southern Carpathians in Romania to better understand non‐adaptive radiations and the processes that determine their course. Alopia in the Bucegi Mountains offers the opportunity to study all stages of a radiation within a few kilometres. The species (as defined by the differential fitness species concept) in the most advanced stage of the radiation differs from other species in the genitalia and co‐occurs with other species. The least advanced stages are genetically differentiated clusters of populations that are geographically separated from other clusters but are not yet morphologically differentiated. Differentiation does not increase with a constant rate as shown by a lineage that was separated early in the evolution of the genus but fused with other taxa upon secondary contact. Since non‐adaptive radiation cannot be accelerated by divergent natural selection beyond the slow pace of speciation that is possible by genetic drift alone, sexual selection plays a crucial role in non‐adaptive radiations. This is supported by the differences in the genitalia found in the most advanced stage of the speciation which indicate that the speciation process was accelerated by a co‐evolutionary arms race resulting in the elongation of spermatophore‐producing and spermatophore‐receiving organs. Another process that facilitates non‐adaptive radiation is long‐distance dispersal that results in geographically isolated populations that can differentiate without gene flow and that have a higher likelihood of speciation due to the founder event. Variability in warning signals is common but remains puzzling since deviations from the most common form should result in a higher number of predator attacks. One explanation may lie in constraints due to genetic correlations between warning colour and other traits under selection. To explore the relationship between variation in warning colour and different life-history traits, we used an extensive data set comprising 64,741 individuals from a Finnish and an Estonian population of the wood tiger moths, Arctia plantaginis, that have been maintained in captivity over 25 generations. This species exhibits variable warning coloration in larval and adult stages. Measuring these traits alongside several fitness components allowed us to set colour variation into context and obtain a better understanding of selection and constraints. Complete pedigree information enabled us to estimate genetic variances and covariances, which revealed several complex interplays between fitness components: Selection for faster development led to a significantly reduced fecundity. Fecundity was also constrained by negative correlations between direct genetic and maternal effects.
