Learning and memory are among the key cognitive functions that drive the human experience. As such, any defective condition associated with these cognitive domains could affect our navigation through everyday life. For years, researchers have been working toward having a clear understanding of how learning and memory work, as well as ways to improve them. Many advances have been made, as well as some challenges that have also been faced in the process. That notwithstanding, there are prospects with regards to the frontier of the enhancement of learning and memory in humans. This review article selectively highlights four broad areas of focus in research into the understanding and enhancement of learning and memory. Brain stimulation, effects of sleep, effects of stress and emotion, and synaptic plasticity are the main focal areas of this review, in terms of some pivotal research works, findings and theories.

RNA editing, the endogenous modification of nucleic acids, is known to be altered in genes with important neurological function in schizophrenia (SCZ). However, the global profile and molecular functions of disease-associated RNA editing remain unclear. Here, we analyzed RNA editing in postmortem brains of four SCZ cohorts and uncovered a significant and reproducible trend of hypoediting in patients of European descent. We report a set of SCZ-associated editing sites via WGCNA analysis, shared across cohorts. Using massively parallel reporter assays and bioinformatic analyses, we observed that differential 3′ untranslated region (3′UTR) editing sites affecting host gene expression were enriched for mitochondrial processes. Furthermore, we characterized the impact of two recoding sites in the mitofusin 1 ( MFN1 ) gene and showed their functional relevance to mitochondrial fusion and cellular apoptosis. Our study reveals a global reduction of editing in SCZ and a compelling link between editing and mitochondrial function in the disease.

Permanent pacemaker implantation (PPMI) reduction and optimal management of newly acquired conduction disturbances after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) are crucial. We sought to evaluate the relation between transcatheter heart valve (THV) implantation depth and baseline and newly acquired conduction disturbances on PPMI after TAVI. This study included 1,026 consecutive patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (mean age 79.7 ± 8.4 years; 47.4% female) who underwent TAVI with the newer-generation self-expanding THVs Primary outcomes were early and late PPMI defined as the need for PPMI during the index admission and between discharge and 30 days, respectively. Early and late PPMI was required for 115 (11.2%) and 21 patients (2.0%), respectively. Early PPMI rates decreased from 26.7% in 2015 and 2016 to 5.7% in 2021, and so did the mean THV depth from 4.4 ± 2.4 mm to 1.8 ± 1.6 mm. Receiver operator characteristics curve analyses showed THV depth had significant discriminatory value for early and late PPMI with cutoff values of 3.0 and 2.2 mm, respectively. Rates of early and late PPMI were significantly lower for patients with shallower compared with deeper implantations (5.1% vs 22.6% and 0.4% vs 4.1%, p 0.001 for both, respectively). Furthermore, rates of early PPMI were lower with shallower implantations in patients with new left bundle branch block after TAVI (2.4% vs 15.9%; p 0.001) and those with baseline right bundle branch block (7.5% vs 29.6%; p = 0.017). Lower rates of PPMI with shallower THV implantation were consistently observed, including in patients with baseline and newly acquired conduction disturbances. Our findings might help optimize the management of a temporary pacemaker after TAVI.

Alternative splicing is an RNA processing mechanism that affects most genes in human, contributing to disease mechanisms and phenotypic diversity. The regulation of splicing involves an intricate network of cis-regulatory elements and trans-acting factors. Due to their high sequence specificity, cis-regulation of splicing can be altered by genetic variants, significantly affecting splicing outcomes. Recently, multiple methods have been applied to understanding the regulatory effects of genetic variants on splicing. However, it is still challenging to go beyond apparent association to pinpoint functional variants. To fill in this gap, we utilized large-scale data sets of the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project to study genetically modulated alternative splicing (GMAS) via identification of allele-specific splicing events. We demonstrate that GMAS events are shared across tissues and individuals more often than expected by chance, consistent with their genetically driven nature. Moreover, although the allelic bias of GMAS exons varies across samples, the degree of variation is similar across tissues versus individuals. Thus, genetic background drives the GMAS pattern to a similar degree as tissue-specific splicing mechanisms. Leveraging the genetically driven nature of GMAS, we developed a new method to predict functional splicing-altering variants, built upon a genotype-phenotype concordance model across samples. Complemented by experimental validations, this method predicted >1000 functional variants, many of which may alter RNA-protein interactions. Lastly, 72% of GMAS-associated SNPs were in linkage disequilibrium with GWAS-reported SNPs, and such association was enriched in tissues of relevance for specific traits/diseases. Our study enables a comprehensive view of genetically driven splicing variations in human tissues.

Background: Ghana’s small scale mining subsector employs more, usually indigenous people, than the industrial large scale subsector. Despite the potential contributions of small scale mining, there exist wide disparaging variations in health, safety and environmental (HSE) conditions compared to their industrial large scale counterparts. The disparity in the HSE conditions of industrial large scale and small scale gold miners was assessed to (a) determine how these differences in the subsector systematically vary with socio-demographic and contextual characteristics of miners in Ghana and (b) establish if these differences are as a result of discrimination in the sector or due to differences in the productivity characteristics of the miners Methods: Four counterfactual decomposition methods were fitted to a cross-sectional survey data of 512 gold miners (207 industrial large scale, 305 small scale) to disaggregate the dissimilarities in mean scores of HSE conditions of industrial large scale and small scale gold miners in Ghana Results: Goldminers’ educational level, ability to self-protect at work, experiencing work related health problems and HSE conditions largely depended on the associated subsector of the goldminer. Discrimination accounted for the larger proportion of the dissimilarities in HSE conditions of the goldminers although work department (productivity characteristic) contributed marginally to the inequality. Conclusion: Subsector based discrimination is the main driver of the dissimilarities in HSE conditions between industrial large scale and small scale gold miners in Ghana. These differences could also arise from the effects of some productive features or subsector heterogeneities. To fill these gaps, relevant small scale specific HSE regulations should be developed and enforced in addition to a comprehensive and inclusive formalization of the subsector.

While research has not yet established the regional consequences of terrorism, its immediate effects on states that have been hit (i.e. Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Nigeria), and the spill over effects in neighbouring countries cannot be discounted. This paper analyses the challenge of violent extremism in Africa based on existing evidence from across the West African sub- region. It pays particular attention to the recruitment of young people in Africa into extremist causes on the continent and beyond and proffers measures for their curtailment. The paper argues that terrorism in contemporary Africa undermines democratization, good governance, peace and security and regional development. It also recommends three-pronged strategies for addressing the miasma of extremist radicalism and its associated violence in West Africa, namely, governance, development and security reforms. While it may be difficult to absolutely curtail the activities of terrorist organizations in West Africa. Countries with minimal vulnerabilities like Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and others should intensify efforts towards increased border and cyber security surveillance, sustained de-radicalization programmes and youth empowerment programmes to curb unemployment in earnest.

The use of mercury is a prevalent characteristic of Ghana's artisanal small and medium scale goldmining subsector. This however has deleterious effects on the environment and on human health. Considerable efforts have hitherto been made to shift artisanal small and medium scale gold miners' behavior towards more sustainable practices although with limited success. Therefore, understanding how knowledge mediates the connection between perception of danger and behavioral change is essential. To evaluate the knowledge gap in the environmental and health effects of mercury exposure using four counterfactual decomposition methods, a cross-sectional survey of 500 artisanal gold miners (300 small-scale and 200 medium-scale) in Ghana was conducted. The findings indicated that the distinction in productive features accounted for the bulk of the knowledge disparity between artisanal small scale and medium scale gold miners. Regardless of the decomposition technique used, level of education contributed the biggest part of the general explained knowledge gap. Artisanal medium scale gold miners (more educated) had relatively higher levels of knowledge indicating that the knowledge gap of mercury's environmental and health effect between artisanal small scale and medium scale gold mine workers was possibly as a result of compositional attributes instead of contextual factors. Notwithstanding the considerable level of knowledge exhibited by the highly educated cohort of the artisanal gold miners, this did not automatically result in adopting cleaner production behaviours. This means that the processes that reconcile the effect of knowledge on the production practice and behavior of artisanal small-scale and medium scale gold miners in the working environment are crucial.

Although many efforts have been made in time past in demonstrating that women are similar to men, there still appear to be a widespread persistent belief that women are indeed inferior to men even until today. What is even worrying is the theological backing that this sociocultural belief of society enjoys. One notices in the literature that God ordains, sanctions, and upholds the spiritual authority of women today as he did in time past as his official spokespersons and leaders of his people. However, the evidence and discussion presented in this paper demonstrate that problems with women being accepted as leaders by congregations, gender differences in pay and promotions, and the experiences and dissatisfaction of women clergy who feel constrained by these gender discrimination is widespread. The paper discusses this phenomenon and presents an often neglected perspective in the discourse – the sociocultural perspective. It interrogates the various stands on women and leadership in congregations. In doing this, the paper explores the position of women in the Old Testament through to the New Testament and the centuries following.

Max Weber, one of the pioneers in bureaucratic organisational studies believes in the ultimate triumph of bureaucracy over the collegial culture of universities. This paper argues that rather than ultimate triumph of bureaucracy over the collegial culture of universities (Weber 1947), the interests of universities would be better served when the bureaucratic culture is designed to accommodate some core socio-cultural expectations of organizational members, without compromising productivity. The research examined the implications of some selected sociocultural factors for bureaucratic practices in selected universities in Ghana through a mix method approach. The findings show that, the authority structures of the two universities typify the Weberian Ideal type bureaucracy with hierarchical culture and standardized rules and procedures for carrying out every task. This notwithstanding, the societal culture was found to be influential in shaping the bureaucratic behaviour and conducts of organizations’ members. The paper aims at bringing to the fore the strength of the informal structures in reshaping bureaucratic culture and work behaviour, and the need to consider socio-cultural contexts in designing bureaucratic organizations.

This study examined the social mobilisation functions of chiefs as partners in socio-economic development. Data were sourced from Juaben Traditional Area in the Ashanti region of Ghana. A qualitative research method was mainly utilized in this study to have a deeper comprehension of the role of chiefs in social mobilisation in the midst of social change. Fifteen participants were purposively sampled and interviewed. A series of interviews and follow-up semi-structured interviews were conducted. The study revealed among other things that by providing the requisite leadership, the paramount chief and his Traditional Council mobilise labour, finances and natural resources in partnership with individuals, local government agencies and private organisations to embark on a number of projects that benefit people in the Traditional Area tremendously. The paper argues that despite their immense developmental roles, chiefs are relegated to the background in the decentralization process. It therefore calls for a greater integration and collaboration between chiefs and local government officials in the planning, execution and monitoring of projects in their communities. It is unsatisfactory to find that in the literature on employee performance appraisal management, enough attention has not been paid to the important factors in the socio-cultural context of the society in which organizations concerned are sited. Employing both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, the study explored the influence of certain socio-cultural values on performance appraisal practices in selected institutions in Ghana. Thus, the paper assesses some of the often neglected sociocultural factors and how they serve to moderate employee performance appraisal management in work organisations. It specifically discusses the relational orientation of the African and how it influences performance appraisal practices in organisations. Our hope is to enhance the understanding of researchers and human resource management practitioners of the realities of performance appraisal management within specific sociocultural contexts. The results reveal that in spite of the existence of established formal systems of performance appraisal in the universities studied, most of the officials in charge of appraisal face the challenge of objectivity and fairness due to their relational orientation. Virtually all the factors that pose this challenge to the officials are socio-cultural in nature. The express desire to maintain a good relation with subordinates and colleagues makes officials compromise on fairness and objectivity in appraising their subordinates. According to the study results, some managers believe that it is prudent to overrate one’s cordial relation with colleagues and subordinates over a strict adherence to institutional provisions provided one does not break any serious rule.
