A new and powerful probe of the origin and evolution of structures in the Universe has emerged and been actively developed over the last decade. In the coming decade, non-Gaussianity, i.e., the study of non-Gaussian contributions to the correlations of cosmological fluctuations, will become an important probe of both the early and the late Universe. Specifically, it will play a leading role in furthering our understanding of two fundamental aspects of cosmology and astrophysics: (i) the physics of the very early universe that created the primordial seeds for large-scale structures, and (ii) the subsequent growth of structures via gravitational instability and gas physics at later times. To date, observations of fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and the Large-Scale Structure of the Universe (LSS) have focused largely on the Gaussian contribution as measured by the two-point correlations (or the power spectrum) of density fluctuations. However, an even greater amount of information is contained in non-Gaussianity and a large discovery space therefore still remains to be explored. Many observational probes can be used to measure non-Gaussianity, including CMB, LSS, gravitational lensing, Lyman-alpha forest, 21-cm fluctuations, and the abundance of rare objects such as clusters of galaxies and high-redshift galaxies. Not only does the study of non-Gaussianity maximize the science return from a plethora of present and future cosmological experiments and observations, but it also carries great potential for important discoveries in the coming decade., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. The presence of Kaluza-Klein particles in the universe is a potential manifestation of string theory cosmology. In general, they can be present in the high temperature bath of the early universe. In particular examples, string theory inflation often ends with brane-antibrane annihilation followed by the energy cascading through massive closed string loops to KK modes which then decay into lighter standard model particles. However, massive KK modes in the early universe may become dangerous cosmological relics if the inner manifold contains warped throat(s) with approximate isometries. In the complimentary picture, in the AdS/CFT dual gauge theory with extra symmetries, massive glueballs of various spins become the dangerous cosmological relics. The decay of these angular KK modes/glueballs, located around the tip of the throat, is caused by isometry breaking which results from gluing the throat to the compact CY manifold. We address the problem of these angular KK particles/glueballs, studying their interactions and decay channels, from the theory side, and the resulting cosmological constraints on the warped compactification parameters, from the phenomenology side. The abundance and decay time of the long-lived non-relativistic angular KK modes depend strongly on the parameters of the warped geometry, so that observational constraints rule out a significant fraction of the parameter space. We study 2-field inflation models based on the ``large-volume'' flux compactification of type IIB string theory. The role of the inflaton is played by a K\"ahler modulus \tau corresponding to a 4-cycle volume and its axionic partner \theta. The freedom associated with the choice of Calabi Yau manifold and the non-perturbative effects defining the potential V(\tau, \theta) and kinetic parameters of the moduli bring an unavoidable statistical element to theory prior probabilities within the low energy landscape. The further randomness of (\tau, \theta) initial conditions allows for a large ensemble of trajectories. Features in the ensemble of histories include ``roulette tractories'', with long-lasting inflations in the direction of the rolling axion, enhanced in number of e-foldings over those restricted to lie in the \tau-trough. Asymptotic flatness of the potential makes possible an eternal stochastic self-reproducing inflation. A wide variety of potentials and inflaton trajectories agree with the cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data. We investigate the effects of bosonic trilinear interactions in preheating after chaotic inflation. A trilinear interaction term allows for the complete decay of the massive inflaton particles, which is necessary for the transition to radiation domination. We found that typically the trilinear term is subdominant during early stages of preheating, but it actually amplifies parametric resonance driven by the four-legs interaction. In cases where the trilinear term does dominate during preheating, the process occurs through periodic tachyonic amplifications with resonance effects, which is so effective that preheating completes within a few inflaton oscillations. We develop an analytic theory of this process, which we call tachyonic resonance. We also study numerically the influence of trilinear interactions on the dynamics after preheating. The trilinear term eventually comes to dominate after preheating, leading to faster rescattering and thermalization than could occur without it. Finally, we investigate the role of non-renormalizable interaction terms during preheating. We find that if they are present they generally dominate (while still in a controllable regime) in chaotic inflation models. We review the main theoretical aspects of the structure formation paradigm which impinge upon wide angle surveys: the early universe generation of gravitational metric fluctuations from quantum noise in scalar inflaton fields; the well understood and computed linear regime of CMB anisotropy and large scale structure (LSS) generation; the weakly nonlinear regime, where higher order perturbation theory works well, and where the cosmic web picture operates, describing an interconnected LSS of clusters bridged by filaments, with membranes as the intrafilament webbing. Current CMB+LSS data favour the simplest inflation-based $\Lambda$CDM models, with a primordial spectral index within about 5% of scale invariant and $\Omega_\Lambda \approx 2/3$, similar to that inferred from SNIa observations, and with open CDM models strongly disfavoured. The attack on the nonlinear regime with a variety of N-body and gas codes is described, as are the excursion set and peak-patch semianalytic approaches to object collapse. Simple analytic arguments are used to understand the predominantly filamentary web in the large-scale distribution of galaxies. We perform a weak lensing and photometric study of the z=0.42 supercluster MS0302+17 using deep I and V band images taken with the UH8K CCD mosaic camera at the CFHT. We use archival ROSAT HRI data to estimate fluxes, gas masses and, in one case, the binding mass of the three major clusters. We then use our CCD data to determine the optical richness and luminosities of the clusters and to map out the spatial distribution of the early type galaxies in the supercluster and in other foreground and background structures. We measure the gravitational shear from a sample of \simeq 30,000 faint background galaxies in the range 22 < m_I < 26 and find this correlates strongly with that predicted from the early type galaxies if they trace the mass with M/L_B \simeq 250 h. We make 2-dimensional reconstructions of the mass surface density. These recover all of the major concentrations of galaxies and indicate that most of the supercluster mass, like the early type galaxies, is concentrated in the three X-ray clusters, and we obtain mean mass-to-light ratios for the clusters of M/L_B \simeq 260 h. Cross-correlation of the measured mass surface density with that predicted from the early type galaxy distribution shows a strong peak at zero lag (significant at the \simeq 9-sigma level), and that at separations \gsim 200 h^{-1}$kpc the early galaxies trace the mass very accurately. This conclusion is supported by cross-correlation in Fourier space; we see little evidence for any variation of M/L or `bias' with scale, and from the longest wavelength modes with \lambda = 1.5-6 h^{-1}Mpc we find M/L \simeq (280 \pm 40)h, quite similar to that obtained for the cluster centers. We investigate nonthermal phase transitions that may occur after post-inflationary preheating in a simple model of a two-component scalar field with the effective potential $\lambda (\phi_i^2 - {\rm v}^2)^2/4$, where $\phi_1$ is identified with the inflaton field. We use three-dimensional lattice simulations to investigate the full nonlinear dynamics of the model. Fluctuations of the fields generated during and after preheating temporarily make the effective potential convex in the $\phi_1$ direction. The subsequent nonthermal phase transition with symmetry breaking leads to formation of cosmic strings even for ${\rm v} \gg 10^{16}$ GeV. This mechanism of string formation, in a modulated (by the oscillating field $\phi_{1}$) phase transition, is different from the usual Kibble mechanism., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, revtex. During preheating after inflation, parametric resonance rapidly generates very large fluctuations of scalar fields. In models where the inflaton field $\phi$ oscillates in a double-well potential and interacts with another scalar field $X$, fluctuations of X can keep the \phi to -\phi symmetry temporarily restored. If the coupling of \phi to X is much stronger than the inflaton self-coupling, the subsequent symmetry breaking is a first-order phase transition. We demonstrate the existence of this nonthermal phase transition with lattice simulations of the full nonlinear dynamics of the interacting fields. The properties of the probability distribution function of the cosmological continuous density field are studied. We present further developments and compare dynamically motivated methods to derive the PDF. One of them is based on the Zel'dovich approximation (ZA). We extend this method for arbitrary initial conditions, regardless of whether they are Gaussian or not. The other approach is based on perturbation theory with Gaussian initial fluctuations. We include the smoothing effects in the PDFs. We examine the relationships between the shapes of the PDFs and the moments. It is found that formally there are no moments in the ZA, but a way to resolve this issue is proposed, based on the regularization of integrals. A closed form for the generating function of the moments in the ZA is also presented, including the smoothing effects. We suggest the methods to build PDFs out of the whole series of the moments, or out of a limited number of moments -- the Edgeworth expansion. The last approach gives us an alternative method to evaluate the skewness and kurtosis by measuring the PDF around its peak. We note a general connection between the generating function of moments for small r.m.s $\sigma$ and the non-linear evolution of the overdense spherical fluctuation in the dynamical models. All these approaches have been applied in 1D case where the ZA is exact, and simple analytical results are obtained. The 3D case is analyzed in the same manner and we found a mutual agreement in the PDFs derived by different methods in the the quasi-linear regime. Numerical CDM simulation was used to validate the accuracy of considered approximations.
