We have investigated the magnetic microstructure of two-phase Fe-Nb-B~based Nanoperm alloys using unpolarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Our SANS analysis reveals a significantly large magnetic scattering contribution due to spin misalignment, primarily originating from the substantial jump in the longitudinal magnetization at the interfaces between the particles and the matrix. The magnetic scattering exhibits an angular anisotropy that resembles a clover-leaf-type pattern, consistent with the predictions of micromagnetic SANS theory. Analysis of the one-dimensional SANS data yields values for the exchange-stiffness constant and the average anisotropy and magnetostatic fields. The micromagnetic correlation lengths for all three samples exhibit a similar field variation with sizes ranging between about 10-35 nm. We also find that the nuclear and magnetic residual scattering component of the SANS cross section exhibits a similar $q$ dependency as the SAXS data. These findings further validate the applicability of the micromagnetic SANS theory, and the mesoscopic information obtained is important for the advancement of the soft magnetic properties of this class of material.

We employ magnetic small-angle neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic interactions in $(Fe_{0.7}Ni_{0.3})_{86}B_{14}$ alloy, a HiB-NANOPERM-type soft magnetic nanocrystalline material, which exhibits an ultrafine microstructure with an average grain size below 10 nm. The neutron data reveal a significant spin-misalignment scattering, which is mainly related to the jump of the longitudinal magnetization at internal particle-matrix interfaces. The field dependence of the neutron data can be well described by the micromagnetic small-angle neutron scattering theory. In particular, the theory explains the 'clover-leaf-type' angular anisotropy observed in the purely magnetic neutron scattering cross section. The presented neutron-data analysis also provides access to the magnetic interaction parameters, such as the exchange-stiffness constant, which plays a crucial role towards the optimization of the magnetic softness of Fe-based nanocrystalline materials., Comment: 13 pages,6 figures, 1 table, 1 footnote

Ion irradiation provides a promising substitute to neutron tests for investigating the effects of radiation on materials for fission and fusion reactor plants. Here we show proton irradiation can quantitatively reproduce precipitation that leads to embrittlement in reactor pressure vessel steels, at dose rates 10,000 times greater than experienced in fission reactor operation. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is used to characterize precipitate size distributions in copper-containing steels irradiated to average doses of approx. 7 mdpa with 5 MeV protons. Comparing our results with the literature on reactor pressure vessel steels containing at least 1 at.% nickel, we find a power-law scaling of dose with exponent 0.25--0.30 accounts for the effects of dose rate on precipitate volume fraction over 6 orders of magnitude in dose rate. In conjunction with dose rate, carbon is identified as performing a leading role in determining precipitate sizes, adding to the known effects of nickel, manganese and irradiation temperature. Complex fluids containing low concentrations of slender colloidal rods can display a high viscosity, while little flow is needed to thin the fluid. This feature makes slender rods essential constituents in industrial applications and biology. Though this behaviour strongly depends on the rod-length, so far no direct relation could be identified. We employ a library of filamentous viruses to study the effect of rod size and flexibility on the zero-shear viscosity and shear-thinning behaviour. Rheology and small angle neutron scattering data are compared to a revised version of the standard theory for ideally stiff rods, which incorporates a complete shear-induced dilation of the confinement. While the earlier predicted length-independent pre-factor of the restricted rotational diffusion coefficient is confirmed by varying the length and concentration of the rods, the revised theory correctly predicts the shear thinning behaviour as well as the underlying orientational order. These results can be directly applied to understand the manifold systems based on rod-like colloids and design new materials.

Hot-deformed anisotropic Nd$-$Fe$-$B nanocrystalline magnets have been subjected to the grain-boundary diffusion process (GBDP) using a $\mathrm{Pr}_{70}\mathrm{Cu}_{30}$ eutectic alloy. The resulting grain microstructure, consisting of shape-anisotropic Nd$-$Fe$-$B nanocrystals surrounded by a Pr$-$Cu-rich intergranular grain-boundary phase, has been investigated using unpolarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and very small-angle neutron scattering (VSANS). The neutron data have been analyzed using the generalized Guinier-Porod model and by computing model-independently the distance distribution function. We find that the GBDP results in a change of the geometry of the scattering particles:~In the small-$q$ regime the scattering from the as-prepared sample exhibits a slope of about $2$, which is characteristic for the scattering from two-dimensional platelet-shaped objects, while the GBDP sample manifests a slope of about $1$, which is the scattering signature of one-dimensional elongated objects. The evolution of the Porod exponent indicates the smoothing of the grain surfaces due to the GBDP, which is accompanied by an increase of the coercivity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Suspensions of magnetic nanoplatelets in isotropic solvents are very interesting examples of ferrofluids. It has been shown that above a certain concentration {\Phi}NI such suspensions form a ferromagnetic nematic phase, which makes this system a unique example of a dipolar fluid. The formation of a nematic phase is driven by anisotropic electrostatic and long-range dipolar magnetic interactions. Here, we present studies of the evolution of short range positional and orientational magnetic order in the suspensions with volume fractions below and above {\Phi}NI, using small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The results show that in the absence of an external magnetic field, short range positional and orientational order already exist at relatively low volume fractions. Polarized SANS revealed that the contribution of ferromagnetic ordering to the formation of the nematic phase is significant. The ferromagnetic correlations can be qualitatively explained by a simple model, which takes into account anisotropic screened electrostatic and dipolar magnetic interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) plays a decisive role for the stabilization and control of chirality of skyrmion textures in various magnetic systems exhibiting a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. A less studied aspect of the DMI is that this interaction is believed to be operative in the vicinity of lattice imperfections in crystalline magnetic materials, due to the local structural inversion symmetry breaking. If this scenario leads to an effect of sizable magnitude, it implies that the DMI introduces chirality into a very large class of magnetic materials---defect-rich systems such as polycrystalline magnets. Here, we show experimentally that the microstructural-defect-induced DMI gives rise to a polarization-dependent asymmetric term in the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross section of polycrystalline ferromagnets with a centrosymmetric crystal structure. The results are supported by theoretical predictions using the continuum theory of micromagnetics. This effect, conjectured already by Arrott in 1963, is demonstrated for nanocrystalline terbium and holmium (with a large grain-boundary density), and for mechanically-deformed microcrystalline cobalt (with a large dislocation density). Analysis of the scattering asymmetry allows one to determine the defect-induced DMI constant, $D = 0.45 \pm 0.07 \, \mathrm{mJ/m^2}$ for Tb at $100 \, \mathrm{K}$. Our study proves the generic relevance of the DMI for the magnetic microstructure of defect-rich ferromagnets with vanishing intrinsic DMI. Polarized SANS is decisive for disclosing the signature of the defect-induced DMI, which is related to the unique dependence of the polarized SANS cross section on the chiral interactions. The findings open up the way to study defect-induced skyrmionic magnetization textures in disordered materials.

We report the results of a comparative study of the magnetic microstructure of textured and isotropic $\mathrm{Nd}_2\mathrm{Fe}_{14}\mathrm{B}/\alpha$-$\mathrm{Fe}$ nanocomposites using magnetometry, transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and, in particular, magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Analysis of the magnetic neutron data of the textured specimen and computation of the correlation function of the spin misalignment SANS cross section suggests the existence of inhomogeneously magnetized regions on an intraparticle nanometer length scale, about $40-50 \, \mathrm{nm}$ in the remanent state. Possible origins for this spin disorder are discussed: it may originate in thin grain-boundary layers (where the materials parameters are different than in the $\mathrm{Nd}_2\mathrm{Fe}_{14}\mathrm{B}$ grains), or it may reflect the presence of crystal defects (introduced via hot pressing), or the dispersion in the orientation distribution of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy axes of the $\mathrm{Nd}_2\mathrm{Fe}_{14}\mathrm{B}$ grains. X-ray powder diffraction data reveal a crystallographic texture in the direction perpendicular to the pressing direction -- a finding which might be related to the presence of a texture in the magnetization distribution, as inferred from the magnetic SANS data.

The complete orientational ordering tensor of quasi-ideal colloidal rods is obtained as a function of shear rate by performing rheo-SANS (rheology with small angle neutron scattering) measurements on isotropic fd-virus suspensions in the two relevant scattering planes, the flow-gradient (1-2) and the flow-vorticity (1-3) plane. Microscopic ordering can be identified as the origin of the observed shear thinning. A qualitative description of the rheological response by Smoluchowski, as well as Doi--Edwards--Kuzuu theory is possible, as we obtain a master curve for different concentrations, scaling the shear rate with the apparent collective rotational diffusion coefficient. However, the observation suggests that the interdependence of ordering and shear thinning at small shear rates is stronger than predicted. The extracted zero-shear viscosity matches the concentration dependence of the self-diffusion of rods in semi-dilute solutions, while the director tilts close towards the flow direction already at very low shear rates. In contrast, we observe a smaller dependence on the shear rate in the overall ordering at high shear rates, as well as an ever-increasing biaxiality.

The study of magnetic correlations in dipolar-coupled nanomagnet systems with synchrotron x-ray scattering provides a means to uncover emergent phenomena and exotic phases, in particular in systems with thermally active magnetic moments. From the diffuse signal of soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering, we have measured magnetic correlations in a highly dynamic artificial kagome spin ice with sub-70-nm Permalloy nanomagnets. On comparing experimental scattering patterns with Monte Carlo simulations based on a needle-dipole model, we conclude that kagome ice I phase correlations exist in our experimental system even in the presence of moment fluctuations, which is analogous to bulk spin ice and spin liquid behavior. In addition, we describe the emergence of quasi-pinch-points in the magnetic diffuse scattering in the kagome ice I phase. These quasi-pinch-points bear similarities to the fully developed pinch points with singularities of a magnetic Coulomb phase, and continually evolve into the latter on lowering the temperature. Small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering experiments are used in many fields of the life sciences and condensed matter research to obtain answers to questions about the shape and size of nano-sized structures, typically in the range of 1 to 100 nm. It provides good statistics for large numbers of structural units for short measurement times. With the ever-increasing quantity and quality of data acquisition, the value of appropriate tools that are able to extract valuable information is steadily increasing. SASfit has been one of the mature programs for small-angle scattering data analysis available for many years. We describe the basic data processing and analysis work-flow along with recent developments in the SASfit program package (version 0.94.6). They include (i) advanced algorithms for reduction of oversampled data sets (ii) improved confidence assessment in the optimized model parameters and (iii) a flexible plug-in system for custom user-provided models. A scattering function of a mass fractal model of branched polymers in solution is provided as an example for implementing a plug-in. The new SASfit release is available for major platforms such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. To facilitate documentation, it includes improved indexed user documentation as well as a web-based wiki for peer collaboration and online videos for introduction of basic usage. The usage of SASfit is illustrated by interpretation of the small-angle X-ray scattering curves of monomodal gold nanoparticles (NIST reference material 8011) and bimodal silica nanoparticles (EU reference material ERM-FD-102)., Comment: 7 figures, 24 pages. Frustrated systems exhibit remarkable properties due to the high degeneracy of their ground states. Stabilised by competing interactions, a rich diversity of typically nanometre-sized phase structures appear in polymer and colloidal systems, while the surface of ice pre-melts due to geometrically frustrated interactions. Atomic spin systems where magnetic interactions are frustrated by lattice geometry provide a fruitful source of emergent phenomena, such as fractionalised excitations analogous to magnetic monopoles. The degeneracy inherent in frustrated systems may prevail all the way down to absolute zero temperature, or it may be lifted by small perturbations or entropic effects. In the geometrically frustrated Ising--like magnet Ca3Co2O6, we follow the temporal and spatial evolution of nanoscale magnetic fluctuations firmly embedded inside the spin--density--wave magnetic structure. These fluctuations are a signature of a competing ferrimagnetic phase with an incommensurability that is different from, but determined by the host. As the temperature is lowered, the fluctuations slow down into a super-paramagnetic regime of stable spatiotemporal nano-structures.

We discuss the applicability of holographically patterned polymers, polymer dispersed liquid crystals, and nanoparticle-polymer composites as optical elements for cold neutrons. Requirements concerning the spacing, thickness or strength of the grating for certain types of neutron optical elements, e.g., 2-port or 3-port beamsplitters, are discussed in the framework of a rigorous coupled-wave analysis.
