38. Dislocations in metals and alloys with the hexagonal close-packed structure

Abstract

Atomistic aspects of dislocations in hexagonal close-packed metals are reviewed. Computer simulation studies on the atomic structure of planar faults and dislocation cores have made essential contributions to understanding the wide variety of the plastic deformation behaviour of this class of materials. Stacking faults have been found to be the most important factor governing the core structure and the glide mechanism of dislocations; the preference for the glide plane, the magnitudes of flow stress and the deformation microstructure in various metals can be understood from the stability of the stacking faults in each material. A brief summary of the deformation behaviour of DO19 ordered alloys and intermetallic compounds is also given, focussing on Ti3Al.

46. Rapid Communication: MiR-92aas a housekeeping gene for analysis of bovine mastitis-related microRNA in milk1

Abstract

Our aim was to identify a suitable microRNA housekeeping gene for real-time PCR analysis of bovine mastitis-related microRNA in milk. We identified miR-92a, miR-375, and let-7gas housekeeping gene candidates on the basis of previous Solexa sequencing results. Threshold cycle (CT) values for miR-92a, miR-375, and let-7gdid not differ between milk from control cows and milk from mastitis-affected cows. NormFinder software identified miR-92aas the most stable single housekeeping gene. We evaluated the suitability of the housekeeping gene candidates by using them to assess expression levels of the inflammation-related gene miR-146a. Regardless of the housekeeping gene candidates used for normalization, relative expression levels of miR-146awere significantly higher in mastitis-affected samples than in control samples. However, of all the housekeeping genes and gene combinations investigated, normalization with miR-92aalone generated the difference in relative miR-146aexpression between mastitis-affected and control samples with the highest significance. These results suggest that miR-92ais suitable for use as a housekeeping gene for analysis of bovine mastitis-related microRNA in milk.

Abstract

The pathogenesis of delayed sequelae of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure is still unknown. We repeatedly examined a 55-year-old woman with the interval form of CO poisoning, using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). When the clinical picture was severe, MRS revealed markedly lowered N-acetyl-asparatate (NAA)/creatine and phosphocreatine (Cr) ratio and slightly increased choline containing compounds (Cho)/Cr ratio. Subsequently, NAA and Cho/Cr ratio tended to return to normal, reflecting clinical improvement. Proton MRS shows the previously unrecognised neuronal activity in CO poisoning and precisely reflects the severity of symptoms. We stress the superiority of proton MRS over the conventional radiological examinations in CO poisoning.
