Dental caries and periodontal disease are typical oral diseases frequently observed in patients with renal diseases. Tooth loss is an outcome of dental caries and periodontal disease, and the number of existing teeth is an indicator of oral health status. However, the association between the number of existing teeth and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) has not been investigated in detail. This study aimed to investigate the association between oral health status, expressed by the number of existing teeth, and ESKD. We analyzed data from the second survey of the Longitudinal Evaluation of Multi-phasic, Odontological, and Nutritional Associations in Dentists, a cohort study conducted among members of the Japan Dental Association. From August 2016 to July 2017, self-administered questionnaires were mailed to 16,128 male dentists and 8,722 responded. Among them, 7,479 men with complete data on age, number of existing teeth, and ESKD were included in the analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted, with ESKD as the dependent variable and the number of existing teeth (≥23 teeth and <23 teeth) as the independent variable. Subgroup analysis by age (<65 years and ≥65 years) was also conducted. The <23 teeth group had a significantly higher rate of ESKD than did the ≥23 teeth group. After adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking habits, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus, there was no significant association between having <23 teeth and ESKD in all participants. However, the subgroup analysis revealed a significant association after adjustment for covariates in participants aged <65 years but not in those aged ≥65 years. In conclusion, having <23 teeth was associated with the risk of requiring maintenance dialysis therapy among Japanese men aged <65 years. The crystal structures and crystallisation behaviours of MII–TbIII–MII heterotrinuclear complexes, [(L)MTbM(L)]NO3 (M = Mn and Zn; L3− stands for a conjugated base of H3L = 1,1,1-tris[(3-methoxysalicylideneamino)methyl]ethane), obtained from various organic solvents (MeOH, EtOH, CH2Cl2 and CHCl3) were investigated. The trinuclear complex cation has two asymmetric centres (Δ or Λ) at two MII sites as a result of the twisted tripodal arms of L3−. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all the analysed Zn–Tb–Zn complexes had homochiral structures (Δ,Δ- or Λ,Λ-enantiomers) in each single crystal; however, the type of crystallisation behaviour showed clear differences depending on the type of solvent molecule. Specifically, crystallisation from MeOH or CH2Cl2 resulted in the exclusive formation of the Λ-conglomerates with the Λ,Λ-enantiomers—a phenomenon we recently termed 'absolute spontaneous resolution'. The analogous Mn–Tb–Mn complex crystallised from MeOH also resulted in the same phenomenon as that of Zn–Tb–Zn. In contrast, the meso-type (Δ,Λ) achiral isomer of the Mn–Tb–Mn complex was deposited for the first time in a series of MII–LnIII–MII trinuclear complexes from a CH2Cl2 or EtOH solution. Density functional theory calculations were performed to compare the thermodynamic stability of homochiral (Λ,Λ) and meso-type (Δ,Λ) complex cations of [(L)MnTbMn(L)]+ in MeOH and EtOH. A 2D layered spin crossover complex, [Fe(super II)H3L(super Me)]Cl.I3, is synthesized from the reaction of Fe(super III)Cl3, a tripod ligand (H3L(super ME) = tris[2-(((2-methylimidazoyl-4-yl)methylidene)amino)ethyl]amine), and Nal in methanol. The compound has shown an abrupt spin transition between the HS (s = 2) and LS (S = 0) states at T(sub 1/2) = 110 K without hysteresis.

(VO-(Xsalton)), with a C=C double bond in the five-membered chelate ring moiety, was formed from the dehydrogenation of Schiff base-oxovanadium(IV) complexes upon heating at 210 degrees Centigrade for three to 15 hours in the solid state in the air. X-ray structure analyses showed the structure of (VO(3-EtOsal-meso-stien)) to adopt a distorted square pyramid with the oxo atom at the apical position, while the vanadium atom of (VO(3-EtOsalton)) takes on a distorted octahedron conformation.

The preparation and characterization of new tetradentate Schiff base-oxovanadium(IV) complexes (VO-(3-Xsal-(R,R)-2,4-ptn)) containing the H2(3-Xsal-(R,R)-2,4-ptn) N,N'-di-3-Xsalicylidene-(R,R)-2,4-pentanediamine where X = EtO,MeO,H were performed. Consequently, the conversion of the 3-ethoxy substituted complex from an orange polymeric crystal to a green monomeric crystal was achieved after heating for 10 mins. at 170 degrees Celsius. Likewise, its conversion to orange upon suspension in water-acetonitrile solution was carried out.

A series of optically active silatrane derivatives (Si(N(CHRCH2O)(CH2CH2O)2)X) (R=Me, i-Pr; X=Ph, OMe) was synthesized. The compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 29Si NMR and X-ray structural analysis. The 29Si chemical shifts and the lengths of Si-N determined by X-ray analysis were sensitive to the bulkiness of the substituent (R). The MM2 computations showed that the substituent exists in the equatorial position. Findings were in agreement with those of X-ray analysis and 1H NMR in solution.

The two axial phenyl groups present on the diamine motif in (Mn(7-Phsal-(SS)-stein)Cl).Ch2Cl2 decreases the oxidation capacity of these Mn(III) complexes. The 7-phsal-(SS)-stein dianion is formed during the condensation of 2-hydroxybenzophenone and (S,S)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The coordination polyhedron of the complex exhibits distorted square pyramid with the Schiff base ligand present on the basal sites. The central chelating ring of the Schiff base ligand forms a lambda gauche conformation.

An analysis of the factors controlling reversible dioxygen binding in lacunar Co(II) cyclidene complexes reveal that steric and electronic methods control dioxygen affinity. The Co-O-O bond angle is sensitive to the atmosphere and reveals complex variations that depend upon ligand substituents. ESR and simulation methods characterize the dioxygen complexes.

The synthesis and characterization of cobalt(II) cyclidene complexes with long polymethylene bridges and their reactions with dioxygen were described. The crystal structure of the bis(isothiocyanate) undecamethylene-bridged cobalt(III) complex has been solved, and the effects of coordination of a small molecule within the cavity on the conformation of the ligand were examined. Moreover, the dioxygen affinities and autoxidation reactions of the long-bridged cobalt(II) complexes are compared with those of the shorter bridged cobalt(II) cyclidene complexes.
