Abstract

Star formation rates (SFRs), gas-phase metallicities, and stellar masses are crucial for studying galaxy evolution. The different relations resulting from these properties give insights into the complex interplay of gas inside galaxies and their evolutionary trajectory and current characteristics. We aim to characterize these relations at $z\sim 0.3$, corresponding to a 3-4 Gyr lookback time. Abstract

Reaching high densities is a key step towards cold-collision experiments with polyatomic molecules. We use a cryofuge to load up to 2$\times10^7$ CH$_3$F molecules into a box-like electric trap, achieving densities up to 10$^7$/cm$^3$ at temperatures around 350 mK where the elastic dipolar cross-section exceeds 7$\times$10$^{-12}$cm$^2$. We measure inelastic rate constants below 4$\times$10$^{-8}$cm$^3$/s and control these by tuning a homogeneous electric field that covers a large fraction of the trap volume. Comparison to ab-initio calculations gives excellent agreement with dipolar relaxation. Abstract

Guidelines for Parenteral Nutrition were prepared by the German Society for Nutritional Medicine (http://www.dgem.de/), in collaboration with other medical associations to provide guidance for quality assurance for parenteral nutrition (PN) practice, and to promoting health and quality of life of patients concerned. A coordination team proposed topics, working group leaders who along with working group members performed systematic literatur searches and drafted recommendations in a nominal group process. Recommendations were discussed and agreed upon in a structured consensus conference process, followed by a Delphi consensus. The current English version of the guidelines was written and updated during the period between the last quarter of 2007 and the first quarter of 2009. The recommendations of the guidelines should be reviewed, and if necessary updated five years after publication.

Abstract

In this work, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based low-complexity approach for downlink (DL) channel estimation (CE) in frequency division duplex (FDD) systems. In contrast to existing work, we use training data which solely stems from the uplink (UL) domain. This allows to learn the CNN centralized at the base station (BS). After training, the network parameters are offloaded to mobile terminals (MTs) within the coverage area of the BS. The MTs can then obtain channel state information (CSI) of the MIMO channels with the low-complexity CNN estimator. This circumvents the necessity of an infeasible amount of feedback, i.e., acquisition of training data at the user, and the offline training phase at each MT. Numerical results show that the CNN which is trained solely based on UL data performs equally well as the network trained based on DL data. Furthermore, the approach is able to outperform state-of-the-art CE algorithms.

7. A Low-Complexity MIMO Channel Estimator with Implicit Structure of a Convolutional Neural Network

Abstract

A low-complexity convolutional neural network estimator which learns the minimum mean squared error channel estimator for single-antenna users was recently proposed. We generalize the architecture to the estimation of MIMO channels with multiple-antenna users and incorporate complexity-reducing assumptions based on the channel model. Learning is used in this context to combat the mismatch between the assumptions and real scenarios where the assumptions may not hold. We derive a high-level description of the estimator for arbitrary choices of the pilot sequence. It turns out that the proposed estimator has the implicit structure of a two-layered convolutional neural network, where the derived quantities can be relaxed to learnable parameters. We show that by using discrete Fourier transform based pilots the number of learnable network parameters decreases significantly and the online run time of the estimator is reduced considerably, where we can achieve linearithmic order of complexity in the number of antennas. Numerical results demonstrate performance gains compared to state-of-the-art algorithms from the field of compressive sensing or covariance estimation of the same or even higher computational complexity. An increasing number of lung cancer patients are receiving outpatient chemotherapy. However, little is known about gender aspects in the areas of impaired QoL in outpatient versus inpatient lung cancer patients. The aim of the study was to investigate this.Methods: We report from a prospective, multicenter study to analyze the EORTC QLQ-LC29, a new designed module to assess the QoL of lung cancer patients. The participants filled out the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the recently updated lung cancer module QLQ-LC29.Results: A total of 198 lung cancer patients (73 female and 125 male, mean 64.5 age years) during first-line therapy were enrolled in this study by completing the both questionnaires. Women showed higher symptom scores, when being inpatient. Significant results were found regarding nausea/vomiting (mean women = 17.6 and mean men = 9.3, p = 0.037) and hair loss (mean women = 40.0 and mean men = 21.7, p = 0.010), although women received fewer chemotherapy treatments than their male counterparts (women n = 47, 64.4% and men n = 86, 68.8%). When it comes to global QoL, men report a significant worse QoL than women (mean women = 57.5 and mean men = 46.1, p = 0.016), when being inpatient. As outpatients, men report significant results regarding sore mouth and tongue (mean women = 1.2 and mean men = 13.5, p = 0.012).Conclusion: This study adds to the literature in showing the typical gender difference effect on QoL, suggesting men suffer less than women, is not a universal phenomenon irrespective of being inpatient or outpatient. Abstract

We report two-photon resonance fluorescence of an individual semiconductor artificial atom. By non-linearly driving a single quantum dot via a two-photon transition, we probe the linewidth of the two-photon processes and show that, similar to their single-photon counterparts, they are close to being Fourier limited at low temperatures. The evolution of the population of excitonic states with the Rabi frequency exhibits a clear s-shaped behavior, indicative of the non-linear response via the two-photon excitation process. We model the non-linear response using a 4-level atomic system representing the manifold of excitonic and biexcitonic states of the quantum dot and show that quantitative agreement is obtained only by including the interaction with LA-phonons in the solid state environment. Finally, we demonstrate the formation of dressed states emerging from a two-photon interaction between the artificial atom and the excitation field. The non-linear optical dressing induces a mixing of all four excitonic states that facilitates the tuning of the polarization selection rules of the artificial atom.

Abstract

Achieving circularity in materials requires fundamental changes in the polymers we use today and the way they are produced. Functional polymeric materials from renewable feedstocks that do not conflict with food and animal feed, and their renewal through biodegradation under diverse environmental conditions as the desired end-of-life option indeed constitute a paradigm shift for today’s plastics industry. Considering the ever-increasing environmental problems associated with the disposal or incineration of fossil plastics, the increasing microplastic formation, food contamination, and rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations, have made it clear that the time is ripe for alternative, innovative, and sustainable polymers with plastic-like properties. In this nexus, the present review shines new light on the benefits of biobased and, at the same time, biodegradable microbial polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolyesters. Special emphasis is dedicated to carbon recyclability through biodegradability and compostability of these fascinating natural materials, which are slowly but surely being commercialized as replacement for fossil plastics that are produced and disposed of in multi-million-ton scale annually, resulting in a growing environmental threat. This review highlights that end-of-life options of PHA are analogous or even superior to another well-known polymer from nature, cellulose, while PHA offer the additional attributes of plastics in use with tailor-made properties. Finally, the review demonstrates how PHA biopolyesters can contribute to reaching many of the heavily discussed and desired UN Sustainable Development Goals. Abstract

Background Colonization of near-patient surfaces in hospitals plays an important role as a source of healthcare-associated infections. Routine disinfection methods only result in short-term elimination of pathogens. Aim To investigate the efficiency of a newly developed antimicrobial coating containing nanosilver in long-term reduction of bacterial burden in hospital surfaces to close the gap between routine disinfection cycles. Methods In this prospective, double-blinded trial, frequently touched surfaces of a routinely used treatment room in an emergency unit of a level-I hospital were treated with a surface coating (nanosilver/DCOIT-coated surface, NCS) containing nanosilver particles and another organic biocidal agent (4,5-dichloro-2-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, DCOIT), whereas surfaces of another room were treated with a coating missing both the nanosilver- and DCOIT-containing ingredient and served as control. Bacterial contamination of the surfaces was examined using contact plates and liquid-based swabs daily for a total trial duration of 90 days. After incubation, total microbial counts and species were assessed. Findings In a total of 2880 antimicrobial samples, a significant reduction of the overall bacterial load was observed in the NCS room (median: 0.31 cfu/cm2; interquartile range: 0.00–1.13) compared with the control coated surfaces (0.69 cfu/cm2; 0.06–2.00; P < 0.001). The nanosilver- and DCOIT-containing surface coating reduced the relative risk of a critical bacterial load (defined as >5 cfu/cm2) by 60% (odds ratio 0.38, P < 0.001). No significant difference in species distribution was detected between NCS and control group. Conclusion Nanosilver-/DCOIT-containing surface coating has shown efficiency for sustainable reduction of bacterial load of frequently touched surfaces in a clinical setting.

The participants filled in the EORTC QLQ-C30, the recently updated lung cancer module QLQ-LC29 and the Hornheide questionnaire (HSI).Results: A total of 81 patients (32 female and 49 male, mean age 65.2 years, SD = 9.7) were enrolled in this study by completing the questionnaires. Fatigue (mean 55.4, SD = 26.3) and dyspnea (mean 46.3, SD = 36.2) were the most prominent symptoms. Thirty-nine patients (48.1%) according to the HSI needed psychosocial support. When using the EORTC questionnaires as screening instrument with 50 as cut-off in contrast only 29.5% of our patients needed psychosocial support. The need for psychosocial support according to the HSI correlated most with the EORTC scales “fatigue” (38.3% overlap between the two questionnaires), “existential fear” (38.3% overlap between the two questionnaires) and worse “global quality of life” (27.2% overlap between the two questionnaires).Conclusion: If psychosocial distress is at the core, the HSI is a suitable instrument for quick screening. The EORTC measures help to specify impaired quality of life areas and also cover somatic symptoms that are specific for cancer patients. Once psychosocial distress has been ascertained, clinicians should be particularly aware of specific problems regarding “fatigue”, “existential fear” and diminished “global quality of life”.Trial Registration: clinicaltrials.gov, reference number NCT02745691.
