In Feuchtwiesen des bayerischen Alpenvorlandes kam es in den vergangenen Jahren zur Zunahme des toxischen Wasser-Greiskrauts (Jacobaea aquatica). Ein 4-jähriger Parzellenversuch auf sieben verschiedenen Ökobetrieben mit je sechs Varianten sollte zeigen, wie sich unterschiedlich intensive Schnitt- , Düngungs- und Ausstechbehandlungen auf diese Problemart auswirken. Alle Varianten führten zu einem Rückgang der Individuendichte, wobei die Varianten mit 3-maligem Schnitt kurz vor der Blüte und 4- maligem Schnitt mit regelmäßigem Ausstechen wurden die besten Erfolge erzielten. Bei der extensivsten Variante mit Schnitt im Juli und Oktober wurde die Samenproduktion im Hochsommer kaum unterdrückt. Alle Behandlungen führten zu einem Rückgang zweikeimblättriger Arten. Der nur zögerliche Rückgang der Bodensamenvorräte zeigt den Bedarf an standort- und betriebsspezifischen Strategien an, um die langfristige Nutzung der Flächen sicherzustellen.

In einem vierjährigen Forschungsprojekt wurden 238 Wiesen und Weiden von 114 landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben im bayerischen Alpenvorland sowie in der Oberpfalz vegetationskundlich untersucht. Mit den Betriebsleitern von 103 dieser Betriebe wurden Befragungen zur landwirtschaftlichen Nutzung der Grünlandflächen durchgeführt. Um das Risiko für das Vorkommen von J. aquatica in Bayern einzuschätzen, wurde ein Habitat Suitability Model erstellt, das die aktuellen Vorkommen der Art auf Standortmerkmale (Wasser- und Bodenverhältnisse) und die aktuelle Bewirtschaftung zurückführt. Die Modellierung zeigte, dass das Auftreten von J. aquatica mit dem Vorkommen grund- und stauwasserbeeinflusster Böden korreliert ist. Ein weiterer wichtiger Faktor ist eine Niederschlagssumme im Zeitraum Juni–August von >380 mm. Bei Eintreffen beider Kriterien besteht in Bayern vor allem im westlichen Alpenvorland (Allgäu und westliches Oberbayern) ein hohes Risiko für das Vorkommen der Problemart. Auf Grünlandflächen, die wegen Nässe nur bedingt befahrbar sind, auf ebenen Schlägen oder solchen mit geringer Distanz zu einem Moor ist J. aquatica häufiger zu finden. Dagegen waren die Zusammenhänge mit der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzung deutlich schwächer. Der stärkere Befall von nassen Flächen mit Narbenschäden deutete darauf hin, dass eine unangepasste Bewirtschaftung, die offene Bodenstellen verursacht, das Vorkommen von Wasser-Greiskraut fördert. So könnte die in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten erhöhte Mahdfrequenz auf Feucht- und Nasswiesen die Zunahme der Art begünstigt haben.

Im Zeitraum von 2017 bis 2020 wurden auf sieben Standorten im Bayerischen Alpenvorland Feldversuche zur Regulierung von Jacobaea aquatica in Grünland unter konventioneller Bewirtschaftung durchgeführt. Die Versuche wurden als Case-Control-Studien angelegt. Die untersuchten Regulierungsmaßnahmen wurden hierbei an die Bedingungen der einzelnen Standorte angepasst. Als Kernmaßnahmen wurde eine Regulierung durch Herbizid-Einsatz, durch mechanische Bekämpfung bzw. Ausstechen und durch Ausdunkeln geprüft. Die Effizienz und Nachhaltigkeit der jeweiligen Maßnahmen variierten in Abhängigkeit von der spezifischen Kernmaßnahme und den einzelnen Versuchsorten. Die chemische Regulierung durch einen einmaligen Herbizideinsatz im Herbst 2017 zeigte an allen Versuchsorten eine sehr hohe direkte Bekämpfungsleistung. Die Wirksamkeit des im Grünland zur Bekämpfung von dikotylen Unkräutern zugelassenen Aminopyralid-haltigen Präparat Simplex und der Clopyralid-haltigen Prüfmittel Lontrel 600 und Vivendi 100 war hierbei gleichwertig. Eine Regeneration von J. aquatica wurde durch eine gezielte mechanische Einzelpflanzenbekämpfung am Ende der Versuchsperiode aufgehalten. Die standortspezifische Möglichkeit zur Regulierung von J. aquatica durch Ausdunkeln bzw. einen mehrjährigen Nutzungsverzicht und die effiziente Regulierungsleistung durch Ausstechen wurde mit den Versuchen bestätigt. Im Verhältnis zur Regulierungsleistung konnten die Pyrrolizidingehalte im Grünlandaufwuchs reduziert werden. Die Versuchsergebnisse belegen, dass durch standortangepasst und nachhaltig umgesetzte Regulierungsmaßnahmen ein erfolgreiches Management von J. aquatica im Grünland möglich ist (GEHRING & THYSSEN, 2016; GEHRING et al., 2021).

Over the past decades, the rapid improvement of agricultural technology has caused a dramatic decrease of rare arable plants. This process has stimulated the development of various concepts to protect these species such as the field margin program or more recently the program ‘100 fields for biodiversity’. For fields with sandy or calcareous soils, management practices to conserve the specific arable flora are well explored. For occasionally wet sites, however, which may also harbour various threatened species, little is known about suitable site conditions and conservation management. Studying seven seasonally flooded field sites close to Parstein (Brandenburg) showed that the flooding regime and particularly the duration of flooding strongly affect the composition of the apparent plant communities. Effects of different arable farming practices on the populations of the two target species Myosurus minimus and Elatine alsinastrum were less pronounced. Another urgent problem of arable plant conservation is that rare species frequently grow at sites where they are threatened by current cultivation. As management is less intense under organic farming, this system could provide suitable conditions for the conservation of threatened species. However, locally extinct species need to be actively reintroduced to overcome dispersal limitations. How these plants can be successfully established in fields under organic farming was studied in a field trial at Gräfelfing (Bavaria). Preliminary results on the winter annuals Legousia speculum-veneris and Consolida regalis indicate that rare arable plants can be successfully introduced to organic fields. Early autumn sowing and a low crop competition provide the most favourable conditions for their establishment. At reduced sowing rates, winter spelt allowed a much better establishment than winter rye. If the idea of transferring rare arable plants to organic farmland establishes in practice, results of this study could substantially contribute to the conservation of rare species in arable landscapes.

Aims: Understanding the spatio‐temporal patterns of restoration outcomes is crucial to improve predictability of restoration. High beta diversity of species‐rich communities is sought because it increases overall biodiversity and improves ecosystem stability and multifunctionality. For predictive restoration, it is important to identify the significance of drivers like site characteristics but also uncontrolled factors such as spatial effects, historical factors, and year effects. Location: Dikes at river Danube, SE Germany. Methods: We studied dike grasslands 4–19 years after restoration over five years (2017–2021, 41 plots in 12 sites). We calculated beta diversity indices to describe spatial variation and temporal turnover, including their additive components 'replacement' and 'nestedness', or 'gains' and 'losses'. We analysed the main drivers of beta diversity like local site characteristics, landscape, and historical factors. Results: Spatial variation of the restored dike grasslands was dominated by the replacement component and showed no homogenisation despite a significant temporal turnover. The replacement drivers changed over time, although replacement was mainly affected by slope aspect and landscape factors. Historical factors were inconsistent over time, and no statistically clear drivers of nestedness were found. The dike grasslands exhibited a year‐to‐year turnover in species composition of 37 ± 11%. Gains and losses were balanced over time, although the ratio changed and was most pronounced on south‐facing slopes. Conclusions: The restored grasslands exhibited spatial variation by site characteristics but also by spatial factors which were not controlled by restorations. Moreover, high non‐directional temporal turnover occurred, caused most likely by weather fluctuations, slightly varying management, and stochastic biotic dynamics. Thus, flexible targets are recommended for restoration monitoring, by defining a set of desired states within a certain range. Furthermore, the dominance of the replacement component of spatial variation should move the focus from defining one precise restoration approach to defining a set of possible methods which together would foster beta diversity. Channel migration, furcation, and vegetation succession are characteristic processes of braided gravel rivers in Alpine regions. These are associated with a frequent turnover of large parts of the active floodplain. However, more than one century of river regulation has reduced or destroyed most of these ecosystem dynamics. More recently, there have been attempts to restore at least some sections of degraded rivers, while there is little monitoring of the biogeomorphological dynamics of such rivers. Thus, we did a four‐year analysis of four representative sections of the upper River Isar in Southern Germany differing in their degree of naturalness. Dynamics of channels, gravel bars, and vegetation were recorded by drone images, and braiding and gravel indices were calculated. When comparing the near‐natural, semi‐natural, degraded or restored sections, there was a gradient of decreasing channel migration, gravel bank expansion, and bank erosion due to a reduced turnover frequency. Biogeomorphological variation among years correlated with log peak discharge within the four sections. In addition, the cover and height growth of vegetation increased with river degradation, and channel migration was positively related to the braiding index. The total turnover of the active river corridor and of the vegetation were positively correlated with log peak discharge within the four sections. The floodplain dynamics of the restored section were improved compared to the degraded section but did not reach a near‐natural state. Thus, Alpine river sections with contrasting degrees of naturalness differ in terms of habitat turnover and vegetation succession, and these characteristics can only partially be restored by local measures.
