Abstract

The Lr34/Yr18 adult plant resistance gene contributes significantly to durable leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks.) resistance. Simple and robust molecular markers that enable early detection of Lr34/Yr18 are a major advancement in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) breeding. An insertion/deletion size variant located at the csLV34 locus on chromosome 7D within an intron sequence of a sulfate transporter-like gene tightly linked to the Lr34/Yr18 dual rust resistance gene was used to examine a global collection of wheat cultivars, landraces, and D genome-containing diploid and polyploid species of wheat relatives. Two predominant allelic size variants, csLV34a and b, found among the wheat cultivars showed disparate variation in different wheat growing zones. A strong association was observed between the presence of Lr34/Yr18 and the csLV34b allele and wheat lines known to have Lr34/Yr18 that had the csLV34a allele were rare. All landraces with the exception of those from China were predominantly of the csLV34a type. Only one size variant, csLV34a, was detected among the diploid and polyploid D genome-containing species, indicating that csLV34b arose subsequent to hexaploid bread wheat synthesis. The lineage of the csLV34b allele associated with Lr34/Yr18 in modern wheat cultivars from North and South America, CIMMYT, Australia, and Russia was tracked back to the cultivars Mentana and Ardito developed in Italy by Nazareno Strampelli in the early 1900s. The robustness of the csLV34 marker in postulating the likely occurrence of Lr34/Yr18 across a wide range of wheat germplasm and its utility in wheat breeding was confirmed.

Abstract

The ClMMYT spring wheat Weebill 1 has near-immune levels of adult plant resistance (APR) to leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks. To determine the genetic basis of resistance in seedlings and adult plants Weebill 1 was crossed with two susceptible parents Jupateco 73S and 'Thatcher'. Advanced [F.sub.4:5], [F.sun.4:6], and [F.sub.5:7] recombinant inbred lines (RIL) populations from Jupateco 73S/Weebill 1 and [BC.sub.1][F.sub.2] populations from Thatcher/Weebill 1 were derived. The [F.sub.5:7] RILs and [BC.sub.1][F.sub.2 ]families were tested as seedlings with five races of P. triticina. The [F.sub.1] and [F.sub.4:5], [F.sub.4;6], and [F.sub.5:7] RILs of Jupateco 73S/ Weebill 1 were evaluated in plots in Mexico and St. Paul. The Jupateco 73S/Weebill 1 RILs and Thatcher * 2/Weebill 1 [F.sub.2] families segregated for Lr14b, an unknown seedling leaf rust resistance gene derived from Weebill 1 in both crosses, and Lr17a derived from Jupateco 73S in the RIL population. Lr17a was mapped to the distal end of chromosome 2AS and was linked to microsatellite maker Xgwm636 at a distance of 4.0 cM. The seedling genes did not condition effective resistance in the field plots with races used in the field trials. The segregation ratio in the RILs and [F.sub.2] families indicated the presence of three to four APR genes in Weebill 1. One of the APR genes was linked to the seedling gene Lr14b on chromosome 7BL and reduced leaf rust by 47% in St. Paul and 31% in Mexico. Based on the haplotypes of DNA markers, we do not believe that any of the APR genes is Lr34.

Abstract

'Hilliard' (Reg. no. CV-1163, PI 676271), a soft red winter (SRW) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) developed and tested as VA11W-108 by the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, was released in March 2015. Hilliard was derived from the cross '25R47'/'Jamestown'. Hilliard is widely adapted, from Texas to Ontario, Canada, and provides producers with a mid-season, medium height, awned, semi-dwarf (Rht2) cul tivar that has very high yield potential, good straw strength, and intermediate grain volume weight and quality. It expresses moderate to high levels of resistance to most diseases prevalent in the eastern United States and Ontario. In the 2016-2018 USDA-ARS Uniform SRW Wheat nurseries, Hilliard ranked first in grain yield in the southern nursery across all 3 yr (5,147-5,758 kg ha(-1)). In the uniform eastern nursery, it ranked first for grain yield in 2016 (6,159 kg ha(-1)) and 2017 (5,633 kg ha(-1)) and second in 2018 (5,515 kg ha(-1)). Grain volume weights of Hilliard were similar to overall trial averages in the uniform southern (73.4-75.2 kg hl(-1)) and eastern (70-75.8 kg hl(-1)) nurseries. Hilliard has soft grain texture with flour softness equivalent values varying from 58.1 to 61.7 g 100 g(-1). Straight grade flour yields on a Quadrumat Senior mill varied from 66.8 to 68.4 g kg(-1). Flour protein concentration varied from 7.0 to 9.1 g 100 g(-1) and gluten strength from 108 to 128 g 100 g(-1), as measured by lactic acid solvent retention capacity. Cookie spread diameter varied from 18.3 to 18.6 cm.

Abstract

‘Matterhorn’ (Reg. No. CV-1151, PI 687896) hard white winter waxy wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed cooperatively by the USDA-ARS and the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 2018. Matterhorn, a sibling of the hard red waxy cultivar Mattern, has white grain color and waxy (amylose-free) endosperm starch. It was released primarily for its unique end-use quality attributes and for grain yield competitiveness with currently grown Nebraskaadapted cultivars. The waxy starch is conditioned by the presence of three naturally occurring mutations that eliminate production of the enzyme granule-bound starch synthase. Granule-bound starch synthase synthesizes amylose in typical wheats and other cereal crops. Matterhorn (tested as NX04Y2107W) was selected from the heterogeneous red/ white-seeded experimental line NX04Y2107 derived from the cross NW98S061/99Y1442.

Abstract

‘MN‐Washburn’ (Reg. no. CV‐1184, PI 694049) hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) was released by the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2019 because of its high grain yield, good lodging resistance, and end‐use quality characteristics. MN‐Washburn also had good disease resistance, including resistance to Barley yellow dwarf virus(BYDV) and field resistance to the Ug99 race group of stem rust. The BYDV resistance of MN‐Washburn results from the introgression of a chromosome 7D translocation containing Thinopyrum intermediumresistance gene bdv2from the introgression line TC14. MN‐Washburn is a mid‐late maturity cultivar with below‐average plant height due to the semi‐dwarfing genes Rht‐B1and Rht24. MN‐Washburn has good resistance to prevalent races of pathogens causing leaf rust, stripe rust, and stem rust and is well‐adapted to the north central United States.

Abstract

'KS Dallas' (Reg. no. CV‐1173, PI 693934) hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed by the wheat breeding program at the Agricultural Research Center–Hays, Kansas State University, and released by the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station in 2019. KS Dallas was selected from a three‐way cross KS08HW112‐6//TX03A0148/Danby TR made in 2009 at Hays, KS. The objective of this cross was to develop a hard winter wheat cultivar with adaptation to dryland production in western Kansas. KS Dallas was developed using a modified bulk breeding method. KS Dallas is an F6‐derived line and was tested in yield trials across Kansas for 4 yr. KS Dallas has medium maturity, medium height, and a medium‐long coleoptile. It has high grain yield potential in western Kansas and good resistance to the prevalent diseases including Wheat streak mosaic virus and leaf rust. It also has good bread‐making quality. Abstract

'KS Western Star' (Reg. no. CV‐1174, PI 693935) hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed by the wheat breeding program at the Agricultural Research Center–Hays, Kansas State University, and released by the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station in 2019. KS Western Star was developed with the objectives to further improve drought tolerance, straw strength, and multiple disease resistance of currently available cultivars for western Kansas. KS Western Star was selected from a single cross 'Byrd'/KS05HW121‐2 made in 2009. KS Western Star was developed as an F6–derived line using a modified bulk breeding method and was evaluated in yield trials from 2014 to 2019. It has medium maturity, medium height, and high grain volume weight, as well as high flour yield and good bread‐making quality. KS Western Star has good adaption to semi‐arid areas in western Kansas with its drought tolerance, stripe rust and leaf rust resistance, and improved lodging resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
