7. Effect of quinazolinones derivates on greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella L.)

Abstract

of biological activities. Ten quinazolinones based Schiff bases, newly synthesized were tested for their insecticidal activities against greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella L.). Oral bioassay was conducted on last stage insect larvae, which were fed with the control diet or the diet containing 100 mg of tested compound per kg of diet. Mortality, change in behavior (orientation test), symptoms on cuticle (change in color, lesions and spots), and effects on molting were monitored after 24, 48 and 72 h. The compounds did not cause mortality in insects, or change in insect behavior. Larvae after turning on its back were able to return to upright position till pupation. After 24 h, eight compounds induced changes on insect cuticle. The greatest number of larvae exhibited change in cuticular color after 48 h. Compound SB17 caused brown and black spots on the cuticle in highest number of insects in each monitoring period. After 72 h, all compounds induced molting to pupa (min 3, 33% to max 60% larvae pupated), compared to the control where no pupae were observed. Compounds SB3, SB8, SB14, SB21, SB17, SB19 and SB25 induced earlier pupation in min 40% larvae. The highest and statistically significant effect on earlier pupation was observed for compound SB3, which induced molting to pupa in min 60% of larvae after 72 h. Molting starts after juvenile hormone secretion drops in the last larval instar. Compounds SB3, SB8, SB14, SB21, SB17, SB19 and SB25 should be further tested for their activity as insect growth regulators.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcomes of transcatheter closure of secundum atrial septal defects (ASDs) in elderly patients.Patients and methods: From a total of 488 patients with ASDs who underwent transcatheter closure, 75 patients aged over 60 years (45 female, 30 male) with a mean age of 65.3±15.7 (60–75) years were analyzed. All patients had an isolated secundum ASD with a mean pulmonary blood flow:systemic blood flow of 2.84±1.9 (1.5–3.9). Symptom-limited treadmill exercise tests with respiratory gas-exchange analysis and transthoracic color Doppler echocardiographic study, as well as quality of life measured using the Short Form (36) Health Survey (SF-36) were repeated in all patients before the procedure and after 12 months of follow-up.Results: The atrial septal device was successfully implanted in all patients (procedure time 37.7±4.5 [13–59] minutes, fluoroscopy time 11.2±9.9 [6–40] minutes). There were no major complications. The defect echo diameter was 17.7±15.8 (12–30) mm. The mean balloon-stretched diameter of ASDs was 22.4±7.9 (14–34) mm. The diameter of the implanted devices ranged from 16 to 34 mm. Significant improvement of exercise capacity was noted at 6 and 12 months after the procedure. Abstract

Background: Valvular heart disease (VHD) is an important cause of mortality and morbidity and has been subject to important changes in management. The VHD II survey was designed by the EURObservational Research Programme of the European Society of Cardiology to analyze actual management of VHD and to compare practice with guidelines. Methods: Patients with severe native VHD or previous valvular intervention were enrolled prospectively across 28 countries over a 3-month period in 2017. Indications for intervention were considered concordant if the intervention was performed or scheduled in symptomatic patients, corresponding to Class I recommendations specified in the 2012 European Society of Cardiology and in the 2014 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology VHD guidelines. Results: A total of 7247 patients (4483 hospitalized, 2764 outpatients) were included in 222 centers. Median age was 71 years (interquartile range, 62–80 years); 1917 patients (26.5%) were ≥80 years; and 3416 were female (47.1%). Severe native VHD was present in 5219 patients (72.0%): aortic stenosis in 2152 (41.2% of native VHD), aortic regurgitation in 279 (5.3%), mitral stenosis in 234 (4.5%), mitral regurgitation in 1114 (21.3%; primary in 746 and secondary in 368), multiple left-sided VHD in 1297 (24.9%), and right-sided VHD in 143 (2.7%). Two thousand twenty-eight patients (28.0%) had undergone previous valvular intervention. Intervention was performed in 37.0% and scheduled in 26.8% of patients with native VHD. The decision for intervention was concordant with Class I recommendations in symptomatic patients with severe single left-sided native VHD in 79.4% (95% CI, 77.1–81.6) for aortic stenosis, 77.6% (95% CI, 69.9–84.0) for aortic regurgitation, 68.5% (95% CI, 60.8–75.4) for mitral stenosis, and 71.0% (95% CI, 66.4–75.3) for primary mitral regurgitation. Valvular interventions were performed in 2150 patients during the survey; of them, 47.8% of patients with single left-sided native VHD were in New York Heart Association class III or IV. Transcatheter procedures were performed in 38.7% of patients with aortic stenosis and 16.7% of those with mitral regurgitation. Conclusions: Despite good concordance between Class I recommendations and practice in patients with aortic VHD, the suboptimal number in mitral VHD and late referral for valvular interventions suggest the need to improve further guideline implementation.

31. Clinical classification of rare cardiac arrhythmogenic and conduction disorders, and rare arrhythmias

Abstract

INTRODUCTION Rare cardiovascular diseases and disorders (RCDDs) constitute an important clinical problem, and their proper classification is crucial for expanding knowledge in the field of RCDDs. OBJECTIVES The aim of this paper is to provide an updated classification of rare arrhythmogenic and conduction disorders, and rare arrhythmias (RACDRAs). METHODS We performed a search for RACDRAs using the Orphanet inventory of rare diseases, which includes diseases with a prevalence of no more than 5 per 10 000 in the general population. We supplemented this with a search of PubMed and Scopus databases according to a wider definition proposed by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. RESULTS RACDRAs are categorized into 2 groups, primary electrical disorders of the heart and arrhythmias in specific clinical settings. The first group is further divided into subgroups of major clinical presentation: disorders predisposing to supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, ventricular tachyarrhythmias, bradyarrhythmias, and others. The second group includes iatrogenic arrhythmias or heart rhythm disturbances related to medical treatment, arrhythmias associated with metabolic disorders, and others. We provide a classification of RACDRAs and supplement them with respective RCDDs codes. CONCLUSION The clinical classification of RACDRAs may form a basis to facilitate research and progress in clinical practice, both in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

43. Agro-economic models: a review and directions for research

Abstract

The article is devoted to reviewing of main 8 models, which are used to analyze the agriculture sector, medium, and long-term forecasts, as well as policy making. The review is based on comparative analysis of models conducted by the authors according to a number of criteria. On its basis, formed the distinctive features of modeling, which are realized in these models. The first distinctive feature is the problem of choosing the level of aggregation in models. This feature generates the direction of research about the effectiveness of the application of one or another aggregation level in modeling. The second distinctive feature of modeling is structurization models into two types: partial equilibrium and computable general equilibrium models. The method of choosing the type of model is one of the actual problems. The third distinctive feature is dominance of deterministic approaches in the construction of models. The use of stochastic analysis in models, in the opinion of the authors, does not yet have a system analysis. Based on the carried out analysis, the authors tried to form directions for the development of the agriculture sector modeling.

Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases, and in particular coronary artery disease (CAD), are the leading causes of death in Europe and represent around 50% of overall mortality. Numerous cardiovascular markers have been proposed in relation to cardiovascular risk prediction, in relation to cardiac and vascular and cerebral events. Chemokines which regulate immune cell vascular chemotaxis, including CCL5/RANTES are points of great interest. We hypothesized that chemokine RANTES level measured in peripheral blood may be associated with severity of atherosclerosis in patients with stable angina undergoing coronary angiography. RANTES and interleukin 18 (IL-18) levels were measured by ELISA. Classical and novel cardiovascular risk factors like brachial flow mediated dilation and intima-media thickness were analyzed in the context of chemokine levels and severity of atherosclerosis. Study included 62 consecutive patients with coronary atherosclerosis demonstrated by coronary angiography, (mean age 59.3 years (S.D. = 7.4)), divided into two groups: group I with lower severity of atherosclerosis, (n = 45) and group 2 with severe CAD (n = 17) based on coronary angiography. Groups were well balanced for classic risk factors for atherosclerosis. Mean RANTES level were significantly higher in patients in group I (67.9 ng/ml, S.E.M. = 3.97) than in group II (50.5 ng/ml, S.E.M. = 7.49; P = 0.03). In contrast, IL-18 levels were similar in both groups (255 pg/ml in group I and 315 pg/ml, S.E.M. = 40.91 in group I, P = 0.12), as well as hsCRP concentration (3.45 S.E.M. = 2.66 ng/ml and 4.69 ng/ml S.E.M.= 1.64 ng/ml respectively; P = 0.47). Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) values have been significantly lower in group II than in group I (6.31; S.E.M. = 0.61; vs 4.41; S.E.M. = 0,56, respectively, P = 0.026), while nitroglycerine-mediated dilatation (NMD) did not differ, indicating more pronounced endothelial dysfunction. No significant correlations between chemokine RANTES levels and intima-media thickness (IMT), FMD measurements have been found in the total population studied. Chemokine RANTES level could become a useful marker of severity of coronary artery disease. Its lower levels were observed in patients with more diffuse disease. Elevated level of chemokine RANTES in patients with stable angina pectoris may evaluate patients to high risk group in plaque formation at early stages of atherosclerosis.
