Abstract

The current status of measuring radiation using JAXA satellites is reviewed. Starting with Engineering Test Satellite-5 (ETS-5; KIKU-5 in Japanese) in 1987, efforts to conduct radiation measurements in space have continued using almost all Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA formerly NASDA) satellites (ETS-6 (Engineering Test Satellite-6: KIKU-6), ADEOS (ADvanced Earth Observing Satellite: Midori), ADEOS-2 (ADvanced Earth Observing Satellite-2: Midori-2), MDS-1 (Mission Demonstration test Satellite-1: Tsubasa), DRTS (Data Relay Test Satellite: KODAMA)(ongoing) and ETS-8 (Engineering Test Satellite-8: KIKU No.8)(ongoing), and ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite: Daichi)(ongoing)), in Geostationary Orbit (GEO), Geostationary-Transfer Orbit (GTO), and Low-Earth Orbit (LEO). Electrons, protons, alpha particles, and heavy ions have been the main objects of study. Abstract

Beam tests were performed for a Micro Pixel Chamber (m-PIC) with a detection volume of 10 x 10 x 10 cm3 to investigate the response to heavy ions. The three dimensional tracks of carbon, silicon, and iron beams were successfully observed and their track lengths were measured. Additionally, Linear Energy Transfer (LET) distributions of each ion were obtained, and the mean LET values were consistent with the theoretical calculation of mass stopping power within an error of ~10%. This detector is a candidate for an ideal dosimeter in space.

Abstract

JAXA published the 'JAXA Vision-JAXA 2025-' in March 2005, in which JAXA proposed to prepare for the establishment of a human lunar base. To follow the vision, JAXA started several studies. Recently, in order to contribute the studies, we calculated radiation exposure dose on the lunar surface by using a radiation transportation code, PHITS, developed by Koji Niita (Research organization for Information Science and Technology) et. al. As a result of the calculation, the effective dose equivalent under 10 g/sq cm shielding in the solar minimum condition is around 0.55 mSv/day and one in the solar flare worst day condition is around 70 mSv/day. On the other hand, the effective dose without shielding in the solar minimum condition is around 0.71 mSv/day and one in the solar flare worst day condition is around 4,000 mSv/day. 23. 人体ファントムを利用した組織/臓器線量の測定および実効線量当量の評価

Abstract

Tissue/organ doses were measured and the effective dose equivalents were evaluated by using a body phantom in the 9th Shuttle/Mir Mission (STS (Space Transportation System)-91). The absorbed doses and the dose equivalents were measured at 59 locations in the phantom by the combination of Thermoluminescence Dosimeters of Mg2SiO4:Tb (TDMS) and Plastic Nuclear Track Dosimeters (PNTD). The case using Radiophotoluminescent Glass (RPLG) was also compared with the one using the TDMS. The values of the accumulated absorbed dose in the Mission for about 9.8 days were from 1.6 mGy in colon to 2.6 mGy in bone surface (shoulder), while the values of the dose equivalents calculated on the basis of ICRP-1990 (International Commission on Radiological Protection-1990) Recommendation were from 3.1 mSv in colon to 5.1 mSv in gonad. The values of the effective quality factor were in the range between 1.7 and 2.7. These variations with organ and tissue had a large factor of about 1.6. The large values of the dose equivalents were found in organs with relatively high radiation sensitivity such as lung, stomach, red bone marrow and gonad. The value of the effective dose equivalent was 4.1 mSv which was similar to the value at skin. These results bring up important problems in radiation protection and urge, in particular, the necessitated reexamination of personal dosimetry for space pilots., シャトル/ミールミッション9号機(STS(スペースシャトル輸送システム)-91)において、人体ファントムを用いた臓器/組織線量の測定および実効線量当量の評価を行った。吸収線量と線量当量は、ファントム59カ所において、Mg2SiO4:Tbの熱ルミネッセンス線量計(TDMS)およびプラスチック飛跡検出器(PNTD)の組み合わせにより測定した。ガラス線量計(RPLG)とTDMSとの比較も行った。約9.8日間のミッションにおける集積吸収線量は、結腸での1.6mGyから骨表面(肩)での2.6mGyまでの値をとり、ICRP(国際放射線防護委員会)-1990年勧告に基づいて計算した線量当量は、結腸での3.1mSvから生殖線での5.1mSvまでの値となった。実効線質係数値は1.7から2.7の範囲となった。これらの値に見られる臓器/組織による変動はファクタ約1.6と大きい。高い線量当量値は放射線感受性の比較的高い肺、胃、赤色骨髄、生殖線などの臓器で見られた。実効線量当量は4.1mSvとなり、皮膚における値とほぼ同程度になった。これらの結果は放射線防護上重要な問題を提起しており、特に宇宙飛行士の個人線量の測定方法に関して再検討を促すものである。

第22回宇宙利用シンポジウム(2006年1月17日-19日, 日本学術会議6階会議室 六本木、東京), The Twenty-second Space Utilization Symposium (January 17-19, 2006: Science Council of Japan, Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan), We started to develop a new space dosimeter named "Position Sensitive Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (PS-TEPC) ". This detector is expected to have good properties of existing dosimeters such as TEPC by NASA and Real-time Radiation Monitoring Device-III (RRMD-III) based on Si telescopes. A novel technique named "Micro PIxel Chamber" (mu-PIC) makes it feasible. Heavy ions irradiation experiments were performed in HIMAC using the detector with the sensitive volume of 100 x 100 x 100 mm3.
