Search

Chirality is a distinct signature that characterizes triaxial shapes in nuclei. We report the first observation of chirality in the nucleus $^{135}$Pr using a high-statistics Gammasphere experiment with the $^{123}$Sb($^{16}$O,4n)$^{135}$Pr reaction. Two chiral-partner bands with the configuration $\pi(1h_{11/2})^1\otimes \nu(1h_{11/2})^{-2}$ have been identified in this nucleus. Angular distribution analyses of the $\Delta I = 1$ connecting transitions between the two chiral partners have revealed a dominant dipole character. Quasiparticle triaxial rotor model calculations are in good agreement with the experiment. Two 0$^{+}$ states at 1294.5 and 1774.0 keV, together with three 2$^{+}$ and one 4$^{+}$ levels, were identified or unambiguously spin-parity assigned for the first time in $^{100}$Zr utilizing $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy and $\gamma$-$\gamma$ angular correlation techniques with the Gammasphere spectrometer, following the $\beta^{-}$ decay of neutron-rich, mass separated $^{100,100m}$Y isotopes. Comparisons with recent Monte Carlo Shell-Model (MCSM) calculations indicate that these two states are candidates for the bandhead of a sequence in a shape-coexisting spherical minimum predicted to be located around $\approx$1500 keV. According to the measured relative B(E2)$_{relative}$ transition probabilities, the 0$_{5}^{+}$ state exhibits decay properties which more closely align with those predicted for a spherical shape, while the 0$_{4}^{+}$ level is suggested to be associated with a weakly-deformed shape similar to one related to the 0$_{2}^{+}$ state.

Isomer spectroscopy of heavy neutron-rich nuclei beyond the N=126 closed shell has been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. New millisecond isomers have been identified at low excitation energies, 985.3(19) keV in 213Tl and 874(5) keV in 215Tl. The measured half-lives of 1.34(5) ms in 213Tl and 3.0(3) ms in 215Tl suggest spins and parities 11/2- with the single proton-hole configuration h11/2 as leading component. They are populated via E1 transitions by the decay of higher-lying isomeric states with proposed spin and parity 17/2+, interpreted as arising from a single s1/2 proton hole coupled to the 8+ seniority isomer in the (A+1)Pb cores. The lowering of the 11/2- states is ascribed to an increase of the h11/2 proton effective single-particle energy as the second g9/2 orbital is filled by neutrons, owing to a significant reduction of the proton-neutron monopole interaction between the h11/2 and g9/2 orbitals. The new ms-isomers provide the first experimental observation of shell evolution in the almost unexplored N>126 nuclear region below doubly-magic 208Pb., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The nuclear two-photon or double-gamma ($2\gamma$) decay is a second-order electromagnetic process whereby a nucleus in an excited state emits two gamma rays simultaneously. To be able to directly measure the $2\gamma$ decay rate in the low-energy regime below the electron-positron pair-creation threshold, we combined the isochronous mode of a storage ring with Schottky resonant cavities. The newly developed technique can be applied to isomers with excitation energies down to $\sim100$\,keV and half-lives as short as $\sim10$\,ms. The half-life for the $2\gamma$ decay of the first-excited $0^+$ state in bare $^{72}\mathrm{Ge}$ ions was determined to be $23.9\left(6\right)$\,ms, which strongly deviates from expectations., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters, 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, 7 equations

We report precision mass measurements of $^{133}$Sb, $^{133g,m}$Te, and $^{133g,m}$I, produced at CARIBU at Argonne National Laboratory's ATLAS facility and measured using the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer. These masses clarify an anomaly in the $^{133}$Te $\beta$-decay. The masses reported in the 2020 Atomic Mass Evaluation (M. Wang et al., 2021) produce $Q_{\beta^-}(^{133}$Te)=2920(6) keV; however, the highest-lying $^{133}$I level populated in this decay is observed at $E_i=2935.83(15)$ keV, resulting in an anomalous $Q_{\beta^{-}}^{i}=-16(6)$~keV. Our new measurements give $Q_{\beta^-}(^{133}\text{Te})=2934.8(11)$ keV, a factor of five more precise, yielding $Q{_\beta^i}=-1.0(12)$~keV, a 3$\sigma$ shift from the previous results. This resolves the anomaly and indicates the possibility of an ultralow $Q$-value $\beta$ decay in this system., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Information on the $^{38}$S level scheme was expanded through experimental work utilizing a fusion-evaporation reaction and in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. Prompt $\gamma$-ray transitions were detected by the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETINA) and recoiling $^{38}$S residues were selected by the Fragment Mass Analayzer (FMA). Tools based on machine-learning techniques were developed and deployed for the first time in order to enhance the unique selection of $^{38}$S residues and identify any associated $\gamma$-ray transitions. The new level information, including the extension of the even-spin yrast sequence through $J^{\pi} = 8^{(+)}$, was interpreted in terms of a basic single-particle picture as well shell-model calculations which incorporated the empirically derived FSU interaction. A comparison between the properties of the yrast states in the even-$Z$ $N=22$ isotones from $Z=14$ to $20$, and for $^{36}$Si-$^{38}$S in particular, was also presented with an emphasis on the role and influence of the neutron $1p_{3/2}$ orbital on the structure in the region.

We report on the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) Theory Alliance topical program "Nuclear Isomers in the Era of FRIB". We outline the many ways isomers influence and contribute to nuclear science and technology, especially in the four FRIB pillars: properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries, and applications for the nation and society. Excited-state spectroscopy from the first Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) experiment is reported. A 24(2)-$\mu$s isomer was observed with the FRIB Decay Station initiator (FDSi) through a cascade of 224- and 401-keV $\gamma$ rays in coincidence with $^{32}\textrm{Na}$ nuclei. This is the only known microsecond isomer ($1{\text{ }\mu\text{s}}\leq T_{1/2} < 1\text{ ms}$) in the region. This nucleus is at the heart of the $N=20$ island of shape inversion and is at the crossroads of spherical shell-model, deformed shell-model, and ab initio theories. It can be represented as the coupling of a proton hole and neutron particle to $^{32}\textrm{Mg}$, $^{32}\textrm{Mg}+\pi^{-1} + \nu^{+1}$. This odd-odd coupling and isomer formation provides a sensitive measure of the underlying shape degrees of freedom of $^{32}\textrm{Mg}$, where the onset of spherical-to-deformed shape inversion begins with a low-lying deformed $2^+$ state at 885 keV and a low-lying shape-coexisting $0_2^+$ state at 1058 keV. We suggest two possible explanations for the 625-keV isomer in $^{32}$Na: a $6^-$ spherical shape isomer that decays by $E2$ or a $0^+$ deformed spin isomer that decays by $M2$. Effort has been expended to assess the relative merits of undertaking further decay-data measurements of the main fission-product contributors to the decay heat of neutron-irradiated fissile fuel and related actinides by means of Total Absorption Gamma-ray Spectroscopy (TAGS/TAS) and Discrete Gamma-ray Spectroscopy (DGS). This review has been carried out following similar work performed under the auspices of OECD/WPEC-Subgroup 25 (2005-2007) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (2010, 2014), and various highly relevant TAGS measurements completed as a consequence of such assessments. We present our recommendations for new decay-data evaluations, along with possible requirements for total absorption and discrete high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy studies that cover approximately 120 fission products and various isomeric states., Comment: Submitted to European Physical Journal A

The collective structure of $^{106}$Cd is elucidated by multi-step Coulomb excitation of a 3.849 MeV/$A$ beam of $^{106}$Cd on a 1.1 mg/cm$^2$ $^{208}$Pb target using GRETINA-CHICO2 at ATLAS. Fourteen $E2$ matrix elements were obtained. The nucleus $^{106}$Cd is a prime example of emergent collectivity that possesses a simple structure: it is free of complexity caused by shape coexistence and has a small, but collectively active number of valence nucleons. This work follows in a long and currently active quest to answer the fundamental question of the origin of nuclear collectivity and deformation, notably in the cadmium isotopes. The results are discussed in terms of phenomenological models, the shell model, and Kumar-Cline sums of $E2$ matrix elements. The ${\langle 0_2^+ ||E2||2_1^+ \rangle}$ matrix element is determined for the first time, providing a total, converged measure of the electric quadrupole strength, $\langle Q^2 \rangle$, of the first-excited $2_1^+$ level relative to the $0_1^+$ ground state, which does not show an increase as expected of harmonic and anharmonic vibrations. Strong evidence for triaxial shapes in weakly collective nuclei is indicated; collective vibrations are excluded. This is contrary to the only other cadmium result of this kind in $^{114}$Cd by C. Fahlander et al., Nucl. Phys. A485, 327 (1988), which is complicated by low-lying shape coexistence near midshell., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Metastable states with T$_{1/2}$ = 8(2) ms in $^{205}$Bi and T$_{1/2}$ = 0.22(2) ms in $^{204}$Pb, with $\approx $ 8 MeV excitation energy and angular momentum $\ge $ 22 $\hbar $, have been established. These represent, by up to two orders of magnitude, the longest-lived nuclear states above an excitation energy of 7 MeV, ever identified in the nuclear chart. Additionally, the half-life of the 10.17 MeV state in $^{206}$Bi has been determined to be 0.027(2) ms, the next highest value in this highly excited regime. These observations indicate the emergence of an island of extreme nuclear isomerism arising from core-excited configurations at high excitation in the vicinity of the doubly closed-shell nucleus $^{208}$Pb. These results are expected to provide discriminating tests of the effective interactions used in current large-scale shell-model calculations., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

De-excitation $\gamma $ rays associated with an isomeric state of $^{186}$Ta were investigated. The isomers were produced in multinucleon transfer reactions between a $^{136}$Xe beam and a natural W target, and were collected and separated by the KEK Isotope Separation System. Two $\gamma $ transitions with energies of 161.1(2) and 186.8(1) keV associated with an isomeric decay were observed for the first time. The half-life of the isomeric state of the neutral atom $^{186 \rm m}$Ta was deduced as 17(2) s. Based on the comparison with the previous measurements of the isomeric state using the ESR storage ring at GSI Darmstadt and the coupling of angular momenta of individual particle orbitals in odd-odd nuclei, a decay scheme of $^{186 \rm m}$Ta was proposed.

Evaluated nuclear structure and decay data for all nuclei with mass number A=201 (201Os, 201Ir, 201Pt, 201Au, 201Hg, 201Tl, 201Pb, 201Bi, 201Po, 201At, 201Rn, 201Fr, 201Ra) are presented. All available experimental data are compiled and evaluated, and best values for level and gamma-ray energies, quantum numbers, lifetimes, gamma-ray intensities and transition probabilities, as well as other nuclear properties, are recommended. Inconsistencies and discrepancies that exist in the literature are discussed. A number of computer codes (https://wwwnds. iaea.org/public/ensdf pgm/index.htm) developed by members of the NSDD network were used during the evaluation process. For example, the reported absolute gamma-ray emission probabilities and their uncertainties in various decay data sets were determined using the GABS code. The gamma-ray transition probabilities were determined using the RULER code and the corresponding uncertainties were determined using a Monte-Carlo approach. This work supersedes the earlier evaluation by F.G. Kondev (2007Ko06), published in Nuclear Data Sheets 108, 365 (2007).

Isomers with three- and five-nucleon-hole configurations have been established in $^{203}$Tl. These include newly identified levels with a three-nucleon structure: {\it I}$^{\pi }$ = (15/2$^{-}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 7.9(5) ns, and {\it I}$^{\pi }$ = (35/2$^{-}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 4.0(5) ns. In addition, five-quasiparticle states: {\it I}$^{\pi }$ = (39/2$^{-}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 1.9(2) ns, and {\it I}$^{\pi }$ = (49/2$^{+}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 3.4(4) ns have also been established. The previously determined long-lived decay [{\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 6.6(3) $\mu $s from this work] is associated with isomerism of the {\it I}$^{\pi }$ = (29/2$^{+}$) state. Levels above this long-lived isomer have been identified through a delayed-prompt coincidence measurement. Five-nucleon-hole states with excitation energies {\it E}$_{x}$ $\approx $ 7 MeV have been established as well as possible octupole excitations of the $^{208}$Pb core built on these levels. The level scheme of $^{203}$Tl is extended up to {\it E}$_{x}$ $\approx $ 11 MeV with the inclusion of 25 new transitions. Empirical and shell-model calculations have been performed to aid in the description of the observed states which are found to be predominantly of intrinsic character., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

The ground-state properties of neutron-rich 106Nb and its beta decay into 106Mo have been studied using the CARIBU radioactive-ion-beam facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Niobium-106 ions were extracted from a 252Cf fission source and mass separated before being delivered as low-energy beams to the Canadian Penning Trap, as well as the X-Array and SATURN beta-decay-spectroscopy station. The measured 106Nb ground-state mass excess of -66202.0(13) keV is consistent with a recent measurement but has three times better precision; this work also rules out the existence of a second long-lived, beta-decaying state in 106Nb above 5 keV in excitation energy. The decay half-life of 106Nb was measured to be 1.097(21) s, which is 8% longer than the adopted value. The level scheme of the decay progeny, 106Mo, has been expanded up to approximately 4 MeV. The distribution of decay strength and considerable population of excited states in 106Mo of J >= 3 emphasises the need to revise the adopted Jpi = 1- ground-state spin-parity assignment of 106Nb; it is more likely to be J => 3., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted in Physical Review C (02/02/2021)

Mass-separated 187Ta in a high-spin isomeric state has been produced for the first time by multi-nucleon transfer reactions, employing an argon gas stopping cell and laser ionisation. Internal gamma rays revealed a 7.3 s isomer at 1778 keV, which decays through a rotational band with perturbations associated with the approach to a prolate-oblate shape transition. Model calculations show less influence from triaxiality compared to heavier elements in the same mass region. The isomer decay reduced E2 hindrance factor of 27 supports the interpretation that axial symmetry is approximately conserved., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

The exact nature of the lowest $K^\pi =2_\gamma ^+$ rotational bands in all deformed nuclei remains obscure. Traditionally they are assumed to be collective vibrations of the nuclear shape in the $\gamma$ degree of freedom perpendicular to the nuclear symmetry axis. Very few such $\gamma$-bands have been traced past the usual back-bending rotational alignments of high-j nucleons. We have investigated the structure of positive-parity bands in the N=90 nucleus 156Dy, using the 148Nd(12C,4n)156Dy reaction at 65 MeV, observing the resulting ${\gamma}$-ray transitions with the Gammasphere array. The even- and odd-spin members of the $K^\pi =2_\gamma^+$ $\gamma$-band are observed to 32+ and 31+ respectively. This rotational band faithfully tracks the ground-state configuration to the highest spins. The members of a possible $\gamma$-vibration built on the aligned yrast S-band are observed to spins 28+ and 27+. An even-spin positive-parity band, observed to spin 24+, is a candidate for an aligned S-band built on the seniority-zero configuration of the $0_2^+$ state at 676 keV. The crossing of this band with the $0_2^+$ band is at $\hbar\omega$= 0.28(1) MeV and is consistent with the configuration of the $0_2^+$ band not producing any blocking of the monopole pairing., Comment: Published in Physics Review C

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd({\alpha},2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C, 5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a K{\pi}= 2+ {\gamma} vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital, in both odd-A 155, 157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called \b{eta} vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2- orbital, to produce a K{\pi}=11/2- band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed., Comment: Published in Physical Rev C

An extensive, model-independent analysis of the nature of triaxial deformation in $^{76}$Ge, a candidate for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay, was carried out following multi-step Coulomb excitation. Shape parameters deduced on the basis of a rotational-invariant sum-rule analysis provided considerable insight into the underlying collectivity of the ground-state and $\gamma$ bands. Both sequences were determined to be characterized by the same $\beta$ and $\gamma$ deformation parameter values. In addition, compelling evidence for low-spin, rigid triaxial deformation in $^{76}$Ge was obtained for the first time from the analysis of the statistical fluctuations of the quadrupole asymmetry deduced from the measured $E2$ matrix elements. These newly determined shape parameters are important input and constraints for calculations aimed at providing, with suitable accuracy, the nuclear matrix elements relevant to $0\nu\beta\beta$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The rare phenomenon of nuclear wobbling motion has been investigated for the nucleus $^{187}$Au. A longitudinal wobbling-bands pair has been identified and clearly distinguished from the associated signature-partner band on the basis of angular distribution measurements. Theoretical calculations in the framework of the Particle Rotor Model (PRM) are found to agree well with the experimental observations. This is the first experimental evidence for longitudinal wobbling bands where the expected signature partner band has also been identified, and establishes this exotic collective mode as a general phenomenon over the nuclear chart., Comment: Revised version. The Workshop on Nuclear Data Needs and Capabilities for Basic Science was held at the University of Notre Dame on 10-11 August 2016. The purpose of this targeted workshop was to assemble and prioritize the needs of the nuclear physics research community for data sets, services and capabilities in areas including nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, neutrino physics and nuclear theory. The beta decays of $^{86}$Br and $^{91}$Rb have been studied using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. The radioactive nuclei were produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyv\"askyl\"a and further purified using the JYFLTRAP. $^{86}$Br and $^{91}$Rb are considered to be major contributors to the decay heat in reactors. In addition $^{91}$Rb was used as a normalization point in direct measurements of mean gamma energies released in the beta decay of fission products by Rudstam {\it et al.} assuming that this decay was well known from high-resolution measurements. Our results show that both decays were suffering from the {\it Pandemonium} effect and that the results of Rudstam {\it et al.} should be renormalized. The relative impact of the studied decays in the prediction of the decay heat and antineutrino spectrum from reactors has been evaluated., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

We investigate the decay of 87Br, 88Br and 94Rb using total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy. These important fission products are beta-delayed neutron emitters. Our data show considerable gamma-intensity, so far unobserved in high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy, from states at high excitation energy. We also find significant differences with the beta intensity that can be deduced from existing measurements of the beta spectrum. We evaluate the impact of the present data on reactor decay heat using summation calculations. Although the effect is relatively small it helps to reduce the discrepancy between calculations and integral measurements of the photon component for 235U fission at cooling times in the range 1 to 100 s. We also use summation calculations to evaluate the impact of present data on reactor antineutrino spectra. We find a significant effect at antineutrino energies in the range of 5 to 9 MeV. In addition, we observe an unexpected strong probability for gamma emission from neutron unbound states populated in the daughter nucleus. The gamma branching is compared to Hauser-Feshbach calculations which allow one to explain the large value for bromine isotopes as due to nuclear structure. However the branching for 94Rb, although much smaller, hints of the need to increase the radiative width by one order-of-magnitude. This leads to a similar increase in the calculated (n,gamma) cross section for this very neutron-rich nucleus with a potential impact on r-process abundance calculations.

{\bf Background:} Level sequences of rotational character have been observed in several nuclei in the $A=60$ mass region. The importance of the deformation-driving $\pi f_{7/2}$ and $\nu g_{9/2}$ orbitals on the onset of nuclear deformation is stressed.\\ {\bf Purpose:} A measurement was performed in order to identify collective rotational structures in the relatively neutron-rich $^{62}$Ni isotope. \\ {\bf Method:} The $^{26}$Mg($^{48}$Ca,2$\alpha$4$n\gamma$)$^{62}$Ni complex reaction at beam energies between 275 and 320~MeV was utilized. Reaction products were identified in mass ($A$) and charge ($Z$) with the Fragment Mass Analyzer (FMA) and $\gamma$ rays were detected with the Gammasphere array. \\ {\bf Results:} Two collective bands, built upon states of single-particle character, were identified and sizable deformation was assigned to both sequences based on the measured transitional quadrupole moments, herewith quantifying the deformation at high spin. \\ {\bf Conclusions:} Based on Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations and comparisons with deformed bands in the $A=60$ mass region, the two rotational bands are understood as being associated with configurations involving multiple $f_{7/2}$ protons and $g_{9/2}$ neutrons, driving the nucleus to sizable prolate deformation.

Medium and high-spin states in $^{133}$Ce were investigated using the $^{116}$Cd($^{22}$Ne, $5n$) reaction and the Gammasphere array. The level scheme was extended up to an excitation energy of $\sim22.8$ MeV and spin 93/2 . Eleven bands of quadrupole transitions and two new dipole bands are identified. The connections to low-lying states of the previously known, high-spin triaxial bands were firmly established, thus fixing the excitation energy and, in many cases, the spin parity of the levels. Based on comparisons with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory, it is shown that all observed bands are characterized by pronounced triaxiality. Competing multiquasiparticle configurations are found to contribute to a rich variety of collective phenomena in this nucleus., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

The neutron-rich nucleus $^{144}$Ba ($t_{1/2}$=11.5 s) is expected to exhibit some of the strongest octupole correlations among nuclei with mass numbers $A$ less than 200. Until now, indirect evidence for such strong correlations has been inferred from observations such as enhanced $E1$ transitions and interleaving positive- and negative-parity levels in the ground-state band. In this experiment, the octupole strength was measured directly by sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation of a post-accelerated 650-MeV $^{144}$Ba beam on a 1.0-mg/cm$^2$ $^{208}$Pb target. The measured value of the matrix element, $\langle 3_1^- \| \mathcal{M}(E3) \| 0_1^+ \rangle=0.65(^{+17}_{-23})$ $e$b$^{3/2}$, corresponds to a reduced $B(E3)$ transition probability of 48($^{+25}_{-34}$) W.u. This result represents an unambiguous determination of the octupole collectivity, is larger than any available theoretical prediction, and is consistent with octupole deformation., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, Physical Review Letters 2016

Low-spin states in the neutron-rich, N = 90 nuclide $^{146}$Ba were populated following $\beta$-decay of $^{146}$Cs, with the goal of clarifying the development of deformation in Ba isotopes through delineation of their non-yrast structures. Fission fragments of $^{146}$Cs were extracted from a 1.7-Ci $^{252}$Cf source and mass-selected using the CARIBU facility. Low-energy ions were deposited at the center of a box of thin $\beta$ detectors, surrounded by a high-efficiency HPGe array. The new $^{146}$Ba decay scheme now contains 31 excited levels extending up to ~2.5 MeV excitation energy, double what was previously known. These data are compared to predictions from the Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) model. It appears that the abrupt shape change found at N = 90 in Sm and Gd is much more gradual in Ba and Ce, due to an enhanced role of the $\gamma$ degree of freedom., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to Physical Review C

A new decay-spectroscopy station has been commissioned for experiments with low-energy, fission-fragment radioactive beams from the CARIBU ion source. Total absorption spectroscopy was used to investigate the beta-decay intensity to states above the neutron separation energy followed by gamma-ray emission in 87,88Br and 94Rb. Accurate results were obtained thanks to a careful control of systematic errors. An unexpectedly large gamma intensity was observed in all three cases extending well beyond the excitation energy region where neutron penetration is hindered by low neutron energy. The gamma branching as a function of excitation energy was compared to Hauser-Feshbach model calculations. For 87Br and 88Br the gamma branching reaches 57% and 20% respectively, and could be explained as a nuclear structure effect. Some of the states populated in the daughter can only decay through the emission of a large orbital angular momentum neutron with a strongly reduced barrier penetrability. In the case of neutron-rich 94Rb the observed 4.5% branching is much larger than the calculations performed with standard nuclear statistical model parameters, even after proper correction for fluctuation effects on individual transition widths. The difference can be reconciled introducing an enhancement of one order-of-magnitude in the photon strength to neutron strength ratio. An increase in the photon strength function of such magnitude for very neutron-rich nuclei, if it proved to be correct, leads to a similar increase in the (n,gamma) cross section that would have an impact on r-process abundance calculations.

An extensive study of the level structure of 61Co has been performed following the complex 26Mg(48Ca, 2a4npg)61Co reaction at beam energies of 275, 290 and 320 MeV using Gammasphere and the Fragment Mass Analyzer (FMA). The low-spin structure is discussed within the framework of shell-model calculations using the GXPF1A effective interaction. Two quasi-rotational bands consisting of stretched-E2 transitions have been established up to spins I = 41/2 and (43/2), and excitation energies of 17 and 20 MeV, respectively. These are interpreted as signature partners built on a neutron {\nu}(g9/2)2 configuration coupled to a proton {\pi}p3/2 state, based on Cranked Shell Model (CSM) calculations and comparisons with observations in neighboring nuclei. In addition, four I = 1 bands were populated to high spin, with the yrast dipole band interpreted as a possible candidate for the shears mechanism, a process seldom observed thus far in this mass region.

The antineutrino spectra measured in recent experiments at reactors are inconsistent with calculations based on the conversion of integral beta spectra recorded at the ILL reactor. $^{92}$Rb makes the dominant contribution to the reactor spectrum in the 5-8 MeV range but its decay properties are in question. We have studied $^{92}$Rb decay with total absorption spectroscopy. Previously unobserved beta feeding was seen in the 4.5-5.5 region and the GS to GS feeding was found to be 87.5(25)%. The impact on the reactor antineutrino spectra calculated with the summation method is shown and discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

A pair of transverse wobbling bands has been observed in the nucleus $^{135}$Pr. The wobbling is characterized by $\Delta I$ =1, E2 transitions between the bands, and a decrease in the wobbling energy confirms its transverse nature. Additionally, a transition from transverse wobbling to a three-quasiparticle band comprised of strong magnetic dipole transitions is observed. These observations conform well to results from calculations with the Tilted Axis Cranking (TAC) model and the Quasiparticle Triaxial Rotor (QTR) Model., Comment: 6 pages; 5 figures; accepted for publication in the Physical Review Letters

New positive-parity states, having a band-like structure, were observed in 105Ru. The nucleus was produced in induced fission reaction and the prompt gamma-rays, emitted from the fragments, were detected by the EUROBALL III multi-detector array. The partial scheme of excited 105Ru levels is analyzed within the Triaxial-Rotor-plus-Particle approach.

Excited states in the neutron-rich N=38,36 nuclei \nuc{60}{Ti} and \nuc{58}{Ti} were populated in nucleon-removal reactions from \nuc{61}{V} projectiles at 90~MeV/nucleon. The \gamma-ray transitions from such states in these Ti isotopes were detected with the advanced \gamma-ray tracking array GRETINA and were corrected event-by-event for large Doppler shifts (v/c \sim 0.4) using the \gamma-ray interaction points deduced from online signal decomposition. The new data indicate that a steep decrease in quadrupole collectivity occurs when moving from neutron-rich N=36,38 Fe and Cr toward the Ti and Ca isotones. In fact, \nuc{58,60}{Ti} provide some of the most neutron-rich benchmarks accessible today for calculations attempting to determine the structure of the potentially doubly-magic nucleus \nuc{60}{Ca}., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review letters

The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes, $^{184,186}$Hg, were studied with the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method using the Gammasphere array and the K\"oln Plunger device. The Differential Decay Curve Method (DDCM) was employed to determine the lifetimes of the yrast states in $^{184,186}$Hg. An improvement on previously measured values of yrast states up to $8^{+}$ is presented as well as first values for the $9_{3}$ state in $^{184}$Hg and $10^{+}$ state in $^{186}$Hg. $B(E2)$ values are calculated and compared to a two-state mixing model which utilizes the variable moment of inertia (VMI) model, allowing for extraction of spin-dependent mixing strengths and amplitudes., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

Two distinct sets of chiral-partner bands have been identified in the nucleus $^{133}$Ce. They constitute a multiple chiral doublet (M$\chi$D), a phenomenon predicted by relativistic mean field (RMF) calculations and observed experimentally here for the first time. The properties of these chiral bands are in good agreement with results of calculations based on a combination of the constrained triaxial RMF theory and the particle-rotor model., Comment: Minor changes based on referee reviews and corrections of some typos

Low-lying collective excitations in even-even vibrational and transitional nuclei may be described semi-classically as quadrupole running waves on the surface of the nucleus ("tidal waves"), and the observed vibrational-rotational behavior can be thought of as resulting from a rotating condensate of interacting $d$ bosons. These concepts have been investigated by measuring lifetimes of the levels in the yrast band of the $^{102}$Pd nucleus with the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The extracted $B(E2)$ reduced transition probabilities for the yrast band display a monotonic increase with spin, in agreement with the interpretation based on rotation-induced condensation of aligned $d$ bosons., Comment: Minor modifications; addition of a reference. High-spin states in the odd-odd nucleus $^{168}$Ta have been populated in the $^{120}$Sn($^{51}$V,3n) reaction. Two multi-quasiparticle structures have been extended significantly from spin $\sim{20\hbar}$ to above ${40\hbar}$. As a result, the first rotational alignment has been fully delineated and a second band crossing has been observed for the first time in this nucleus. Configurations for these strongly-coupled rotational bands are proposed based on signature splitting, $B(M1)/B(E2)$ ratio information, and observed rotation-alignment behavior. Properties of the observed bands in $^{168}$Ta are compared to related structures in the neighboring odd-$Z$, odd-$N$, and odd-odd nuclei and are discussed within the framework of the cranked shell model., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, Gammasphere experiment

The transition quadrupole moments, $Q_{\rm t}$, of four weakly populated collective bands up to spin $\sim$ $65\hbar$ in $^{157,158}$Er have been measured to be ${\sim}11 {\rm eb}$ demonstrating that these sequences are associated with large deformations. However, the data are inconsistent with calculated values from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations that predict the lowest energy triaxial shape to be associated with rotation about the short principal axis. The data appear to favor either a stable triaxial shape rotating about the intermediate axis or, alternatively, a triaxial shape with larger deformation rotating about the short axis. The expanded level structure of $^{240}$Pu available from the present study highlights the role of strong octupole correlations in this nucleus. Besides a delayed alignment in the yrast band, the observations include the presence of both $I^{+}{\to}(I-1)^{-}$ and $I^{-}{\to}(I-1)^{+}$ E1 transitions linking states of the yrast and negative-parity bands at high spin and the presence of an additional even-spin, positive-parity band deexciting exclusively to the negative parity sequence.
