Olfactory mucus contributes to the specific functions of the olfactory mucosa, but the composition and source of mucus proteins have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we used comprehensive proteome analysis and identified lipocalin 15 (LCN15), a human-specific lipocalin family protein, as an abundant component of the olfactory mucus. Western blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a newly generated anti-LCN15 antibody showed that LCN15 was concentrated in olfactory mucus samples, but not in respiratory mucus samples. Immunohistochemical staining using anti-LCN15 antibody revealed that LCN15 localized to the cytokeratin 18-positive Bowman's glands of the olfactory cleft mucosa. Quantitative image analysis revealed that the area of LCN15 immunoreactivity along the olfactory cleft mucosa significantly correlated with the area of neuron-specific Protein-Gene Product 9.5 (PGP9.5) immunoreactivity, suggesting that LCN15 is produced in non-degenerated areas of the olfactory neuroepithelium. ELISA demonstrated that the concentration of LCN15 in the mucus was lower in participants with normal olfaction (≥ 50 years) and also tended to be lower in patients with idiopathic olfactory loss (≥ 50 years) than in participants with normal olfaction (< 50 years). Background: Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by eosinophilic infiltration, T‐helper type 2 (Th2‐type) response, and olfactory dysfunction. A master regulator of Th2‐type inflammation, thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), is important for basophil activation. TSLP‐elicited basophils are a key factor in the pathogenesis of ECRS. Methods: In order to elucidate the mechanisms of ECRS in humans, we aimed to establish a murine model of ECRS based on TSLP production in response to the topical application of MC903 (a vitamin D3 analog) and the subsequent TSLP‐induced basophil activation. Histological analyses were performed to assess immune cell infiltration into the nasal mucosa and to explore the impact of eosinophilic inflammation on the olfactory epithelium. The status of Th2‐type inflammation was evaluated by quantitative real‐time PCR and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Eosinophils, basophils, and M2 macrophages increased significantly in the nasal mucosa of the mice treated with MC903 and ovalbumin (OVA), compared to those treated with OVA alone or the controls. Quantitative real‐time PCR and ELISA revealed elevated expression of interleukin (IL)‐4, IL‐5, IL‐13, TSLP, the chemokine CCL11, and CCL24 in the nasal mucosa of the ECRS mice. In parallel, thinned olfactory epithelium and decreased mature olfactory sensory neurons were observed in the ECRS mice. Conclusions: Our model of ECRS displayed Th2‐type inflammation in the sinonasal region, including both eosinophil infiltration and basophil infiltration. A rare case of intraosseous cavernous hemangioma was identified in the nasal root. Using a combination of endoscopic surgery and open rhinoplasty, an osteotomy was performed and resection of the hemangioma was successfully achieved with transcolumellar and infracartilaginous incisions and 2 stab incisions. No adverse side effects were observed after the procedure, no tumor recurrence was observed at the 16-month-postoperative follow-up. The preserved periosteum contributed to the osteogenesis and thus, a need for a reconstructive surgery was indicated. The favorable outcomes associated with this approach justify and authenticate the use of endoscopy-assisted open rhinoplasty in the treatment of intraosseous cavernous hemangiomas without leaving ventral surgical scarring. The effects of caloric restriction (CR) on cell dynamics and gene expression in the mouse olfactory neuroepithelium are evaluated. Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were fed either control pellets (104 kcal/week) or CR pellets (67 kcal/week). The cytoarchitecture of the olfactory neuroepithelium in the uninjured condition and its regeneration after injury by an olfactotoxic chemical, methimazole, were compared between mice fed with the control and CR diets. In the uninjured condition, there were significantly fewer olfactory marker protein (OMP)-positive olfactory receptor neurons and Ki67-positive proliferating basal cells at 3 months in the CR group than in the control group. The number of Ki67-positive basal cells increased after methimazole-induced mucosal injury in both the control and the CR groups, but the increase was less robust in the CR group. The recovery of the neuroepithelium at 2 months after methimazole administration was less complete in the CR group than in the control group. These histological changes were region-specific. The decrease in the OMP-positive neurons was prominent in the anterior region of the olfactory mucosa. Gene expression analysis using a DNA microarray and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that the expression levels of two inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-6 and chemokine ligand 1, were elevated in the olfactory mucosa of the CR group compared with the control group. The dynamics of mode transition from the electrostatic (E) to electromagnetic (H) mode of a radio-frequency argon inductively coupled plasma (ICP) in atmospheric pressure is investigated, both experimentally and theoretically. High-speed (4500 f/s) camera imaging is performed to investigate the dynamics of E–H discharge mode transition. The temporal plasma loading impedance of Ar inductive discharges at the E–H transition stage is also observed to investigate the transition dynamics. The experimental observations reveal that the formation of the multiple streamerlike electrostatic discharge paths followed by the strong ring-shaped azimuthal discharges leads to ignite the high-pressure (around 1 atm or more) ICPs. The time scale of E–H discharge mode transition is estimated by using proposed models and the estimated results are compared with that of the experimental one. Abstract Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) are useful to evaluate the compatibility of functional particles in a liquid phase. Until now, sedimentation velocity and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods have been used to measure the HSPs of particle surfaces. However, determination of HSPs of highly dense materials and large or non-spherical particles by these methods is difficult. In this study, we used a capillary penetration method to determine the HSPs of a fine particle surface. We confirmed the effectiveness of the capillary penetration method by measuring the HSPs of the surface of spherical silica particles with a diameter of 1 µm. The HSPs determined by the capillary penetration and DLS methods were similar. The capillary penetration method developed in this work will enable simple measurement of the HSPs of dense and large particles, which will facilitate future applications of such particles. Patients with neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) often experience functional dysphagia, which may involve dysfunction in a specific phase of swallowing or in the entire process. This review outlines the approach to dysphagia in the setting of NDDs. Distinguishing the etiology of dysphagia can be difficult, and it is important to always look out for signs pointing to NDD as the cause. Thorough diagnostic work-up is essential, and it includes a comprehensive history and physical examination, alongside swallowing function tests, such as fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, videofluoroscopic swallowing study, and high-resolution manometry. Management requires a multidisciplinary approach with a treatment plan tailored to each patient. This involves dietary guidance, swallowing rehabilitation, and surgery in cases in which improvement with rehabilitation is inadequate. Surgery may involve altering certain pharyngolaryngeal structures to facilitate swallowing and reduce the risk of aspiration (swallowing improvement surgery) or separating the airway and digestive tract while sacrificing laryngeal function, with the main goal of preventing aspiration (aspiration prevention surgery). Recently, we have proposed quantum cross structure (QCS) devices that consist of two metal thin films deposited on organic films with edge-to-edge configuration like crossed fins for switching devices. In this paper, we propose a spin quantum cross structure (SQCS) device, which is a QCS device consisting of two magnetic thin films. We show theoretical and experimental results of electronic transport characteristics regarding SQCS devices. The calculation of the I-V characteristics has been performed for the SQCS devices with the Ni magnetic thin films for both the electrodes within the framework of the Anderson model. Then, we fabricated a SQCS device with the Ni magnetic thin films and measured the I-V characteristics by a four-terminal method. Also, the calculation of the magnetoresistance ratio has been done as a function of renormalized transfer matrices including magnetostriction effects and the other effects phenomenologically. Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) often results in decreased olfaction. In this study, we examined the relationship between nasal polyp location and olfactory airflow and odorant transport changes using virtual nasal polyp models at different locations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. We also compared olfactory airflow and olfaction between patients with nasal polyps at different locations using CFD analysis and an olfactory test. Methods: Nasal computed tomography images were used to generate a normal model and 4 virtual nasal polyp models based on polyp locations, including the olfactory region (all‐olfactory model), the region anterior to the olfactory region (preolfactory model), the middle meatus (middle‐meatus model), and the superior meatus (superior‐meatus model). Various airflow parameters were compared between these models and a normal model without polyps. We then performed a similar comparison between the 3‐dimensional (3D) reconstruction models of patients with nasal polyps, and retrospectively investigated the correlation between olfaction and nasal polyp location in those patients. Results: Virtual nasal polyp analysis revealed dispersion of olfactory airflow in the all‐olfactory model. Olfactory airflow and odorant transport showed maximum decrease in the preolfactory model and a slight decrease in the superior‐meatus model. Olfactory airflow by polyps was further decreased by blockade of the olfactory airflow inlet than of the outlet. The findings obtained by patients corresponded well to those of the virtual polyp analysis. Conclusion: Olfactory airflow and olfaction are differentially affected by nasal polyp location. Background/aims: This study aimed to examine variations in the location of the infraorbital nerve relative to postoperative maxillary cysts to assess the potential risk of nerve injury during endonasal marsupialization.Methods: Coronal computed tomography images of 130 patients (162 sides) with postoperative maxillary cysts who visited our clinic between 2003 and 2014 were reviewed from the viewpoint of the anatomical relationship between the infraorbital nerves and cysts.Results: The proportions of the six locations were as follows: upside 45.1% (n = 73), separate 13.0% (n = 21), medial 5.6% (n = 9), lateral 14.2% (n = 23), in-between 7.4% (n = 12), and unevaluable 14.8% (n = 24). The proportion of the cases with a potential risk of infraorbital nerve damage during endoscopic marsupialization, including medial, in-between, and unevaluable locations, was 27.8%. Retrospective chart review revealed that 2 patients with a postoperative maxillary cyst that were unevaluable complained of persistent postoperative hypoesthesia of the cheek.Conclusion: The anatomical relationship between the infraorbital nerve and postoperative maxillary cysts varied among patients, with approximately one-fourth of the patients being at risk of infraorbital nerve injury even during endoscopic procedures. Objective To investigate the clinical and electrophysiological features of facial nerve paralysis (FNP) due to benign temporal bone masses (TBMs) and elucidate its differences as compared with Bell’s palsy. Methods FNP assessed by the House–Brackmann (HB) grading system and by electroneurography (ENoG) were compared retrospectively. Results We reviewed 914 patient records and identified 31 patients with FNP due to benign TBMs. Moderate FNP (HB Grades II–IV) was dominant for facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) (n = 15), whereas severe FNP (Grades V and VI) was dominant for cholesteatomas (n = 8) and hemangiomas (n = 3). The average ENoG value was 19.8% for FNS, 15.6% for cholesteatoma, and 0% for hemangioma. Analysis of the correlation between HB grade and ENoG value for FNP due to TBMs and Bell’s palsy revealed that given the same ENoG value, the corresponding HB grade was better for FNS, followed by cholesteatoma, and worst in Bell’s palsy. Conclusions Facial nerve damage caused by benign TBMs could depend on the underlying pathology. Facial movement and ENoG values did not correlate when comparing TBMs and Bell’s palsy. When the HB grade is found to be unexpectedly better than the ENoG value, TBMs should be included in the differential diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives The relationship between a particular surgical technique in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and airflow changes in the post-operative olfactory region has not been assessed. The present study aimed to compare olfactory airflow after ESS between conventional ethmoidectomy and ethmoidectomy with superior meatus enlargement, using virtual ESS and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Study Design Prospective computational study. Materials and Methods Nasal computed tomography images of four adult subjects were used to generate models of the nasal airway. The original preoperative model was digitally edited as virtual ESS by performing uncinectomy, ethmoidectomy, antrostomy, and frontal sinusotomy. The following two post-operative models were prepared: conventional ethmoidectomy with normal superior meatus (ESS model) and ethmoidectomy with superior meatus enlargement (ESS-SM model). The calculated three-dimensional nasal geometries were confirmed using virtual endoscopy to ensure that they corresponded to the post-operative anatomy observed in the clinical setting. Steady-state, laminar, inspiratory airflow was simulated, and the velocity, streamline, and mass flow rate in the olfactory region were compared among the preoperative and two postoperative models. Results The mean velocity in the olfactory region, number of streamlines bound to the olfactory region, and mass flow rate were higher in the ESS-SM model than in the other models. Conclusion We successfully used an innovative approach involving virtual ESS, virtual endoscopy, and CFD to assess postoperative outcomes after ESS. It is hypothesized that the increased airflow to the olfactory fossa achieved with ESS-SM may lead to improved olfactory function; however, further studies are required. Level of Evidence NA. Background The posterior nasal nerve is the dominant source of the parasympathetic, sympathetic, and sensory fibers that innervate the nasal respiratory mucosa. Therefore, a posterior nasal neurectomy (PNN) induces denervation of the nasal mucosa and relieves the nasal symptoms of intractable rhinitis. PNN depletes nerve fibers, choline acetyltransferase, and neuropeptides in nasal respiratory mucosa, and reduces nasal secretion. However, the histological and symptomatic changes over an extended period after PNN remain unknown. Methods Using a rat model of PNN via the transorbital approach, we investigated chronological changes of nasal morphology, innervation, and secretion over a 48-week postoperative period after PNN. Results The respiratory nasal mucosa exhibited squamous metaplasia, lymphocyte and plasma cell infiltration, basement membrane thickening, loss of cilia, and hyperplasia of the mucus gland in thickened epithelium with increased connective tissue from 24 weeks after PNN. These changes resemble the characteristics of remodeling in chronic rhinosinusitis. DNA microarray and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that mucin 5ac, interleukin 13, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor messenger RNA (mRNA) were upregulated in PNN-treated mucosa compared to untreated mucosa. During this period, nerve fibers including sensory, sympathetic, and parasympathetic fibers gradually reinnervated the mucosa from 12 weeks after PNN. However, nasal secretion was decreased even at 48 weeks after PNN probably due to the prolonged absence of choline acetyltransferase. Conclusion Prolonged denervation induces remodeling of the nasal mucosa. Although the depleted nerves were partially reinnervated a few months after PNN, nasal secretion was still suppressed, partly due to a sustained deficiency of acetylcholine synthesis. Aim Pegylated interferon ( Peg IFN) therapies for hepatitis C virus ( HCV) infection often induce a depressive state. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for and clinical characteristics of Peg IFN-induced depressive state. Methods Sixty-nine subjects with HCV who received Peg IFN therapy were enrolled. Before beginning therapy, all subjects were evaluated using the Neuroticism- Extraversion- Openness Five- Factor Inventory and the List of Threatening Events Questionnaire. Beck Depression Inventory ( BDI) scores were also evaluated at baseline, 2-4 weeks after initiating therapy, and every 4 weeks thereafter. Results During the study, 18 subjects (24.3%) developed a depressive state ( BDI ≥ 10). A bimodal peak of onset was observed during the early (2-8 weeks) and late (after 20 weeks) therapy phases. Moreover, we observed that baseline BDI scores (odds ratio [ OR] = 1.40, P = 0.0104) and neuroticism ( OR = 1.14, P = 0.0275) were significant risk factors for developing a depressive state. To determine the specific characteristics of this condition, we compared the BDI subscales between the ' Peg IFN-induced' and 'general' depressive state reported previously. We found that the score at 'somatic symptoms' was higher in the ' Peg IFN-induced' group. Conclusion Our results indicate the following: (i) PegIFN-induced depressive state most frequently develops during the first 8 weeks of therapy; (ii) baseline BDI and neuroticism scores are risk factors for PegIFN-induced depressive state; and (iii) the core symptoms of PegIFN-induced depressive state are different from those of 'general' depression. The association between congenital facial paralysis and visual development has not been thoroughly studied. Of 27 pediatric cases of congenital facial paralysis, we identified 3 patients who developed amblyopia, a visual acuity decrease caused by abnormal visual development, as comorbidity. These 3 patients had facial paralysis in the periocular region and developed amblyopia on the paralyzed side. They started treatment by wearing an eye patch immediately after diagnosis and before the critical visual developmental period; all patients responded to the treatment. Our findings suggest that the incidence of amblyopia in the cases of congenital facial paralysis, particularly the paralysis in the periocular region, is higher than that in the general pediatric population. Interestingly, 2 of the 3 patients developed anisometropic amblyopia due to the hyperopia of the affected eye, implying that the periocular facial paralysis may have affected the refraction of the eye through yet unspecified mechanisms. Therefore, the physicians who manage facial paralysis should keep this pathology in mind, and when they see pediatric patients with congenital facial paralysis involving the periocular region, they should consult an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified a number of susceptibility genes for schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). However, the identification of risk genes for major depressive disorder (MDD) has been unsuccessful because the etiology of MDD is more influenced by environmental factors; thus, gene–environment (G×E) interactions are important, such as interplay with stressful life events (SLEs). We assessed the G×E interactions and main effects of genes targeting depressive symptoms. Using a case–control design, 922 hospital staff members were evaluated for depressive symptoms according to Beck Depressive Inventory (BDI; “depression” and “control” groups were classified by scores of 10 in the BDI test), SLEs, and personality. A total of sixty-three genetic variants were selected on the basis of previous GWASs of MDD, SCZ, and BD as well as candidate-gene (SLC6A4, BDNF, DBH, and FKBP5) studies. Logistic regression analysis revealed a marginally significant interaction (genetic variant × SLE) at rs4523957 (Puncorrected = 0.0034) with depression and a significant association of single nucleotide polymorphism identified from evidence of BD GWAS (rs7296288, downstream of DHH at 12q13.1) with depression as the main effect (Puncorrected = 9.4×10−4, Pcorrected = 0.0424). We also found that SLEs had a larger impact on depression (odds ratio∼3), as reported previously. These results suggest that DHH plays a possible role in depression etiology; however, variants from MDD or SCZ GWAS evidence or candidate genes showed no significant associations or minimal effects of interactions with SLEs on depression. The pathogenesis of postviral olfactory disorder (PVOD) has not been fully elucidated. We investigated morphological changes and innate immune responses in the mouse olfactory mucosa induced by intranasal administration of polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [Poly(I:C)], a synthetic analog of viral double-stranded RNA. Mice received three administrations of saline with or without Poly(I:C), once every 24 h. The olfactory mucosa was harvested at various intervals after the first administration (8 h, 3, 9 and 24 days). In the Poly(I:C) group, the number of apoptotic cells in the olfactory neuroepithelium had increased at 8 h. At 9 days, the olfactory neuroepithelium had severely degenerated and behavioral tests demonstrated that the mice showed signs of olfactory deterioration. At 24 days, the structure of the neuroepithelium had regenerated almost completely. Regarding the innate immune responses, many neutrophils had infiltrated the olfactory neuroepithelium at 8 h and had exuded into the nasal cavity by 3 days. Macrophages had also infiltrated the olfactory neuroepithelium at 8 h although to a lesser extent, but they still remained in the neuroepithelium at 24 days. Poly(I:C)-induced neuroepithelial damage was significantly inhibited by a neutrophil elastase inhibitor and was suppressed in neutropenic model mice. Background: Recent genome-wide association studies (GWASs) investigating bipolar disorder (BD) have detected a number of susceptibility genes. These studies have also provided novel insight into shared genetic components between BD and schizophrenia (SCZ), two major psychotic disorders. To examine the replication of the risk variants for BD and the pleiotropic effect of the variants associated with BD, we conducted a genetic association study of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were selected based upon previous BD GWASs, which targeted psychotic disorders (BD and SCZ) in the Japanese population. Methods: Forty-eight SNPs were selected based upon previous GWASs. A two-stage analysis was conducted using first-set screening (for all SNPs: BD = 1,012, SCZ = 1,032 and control = 993) and second-set replication samples (for significant SNPs in the screening analysis: BD = 821, SCZ = 1,808 and control = 2,149). We assessed allelic association between BD, SCZ, psychosis (BD+SCZ) and the SNPs selected for the analysis. Results: Eight SNPs revealed nominal association signals for all comparisons (Puncorrected<0.05). Among these SNPs, the top two SNPs (associated with psychosis: Pcorrected = 0.048 and 0.037 for rs2251219 and rs2709722, respectively) were further assessed in the second-set samples, and we replicated the signals from the initial screening analysis (associated with psychosis: Pcorrected = 0.0070 and 0.033 for rs2251219 and rs2709722, respectively). The meta-analysis between the current and previous GWAS results showed that rs2251219 in Polybromo1 (PBRM1) was significant on genome-wide association level (P = 5×10−8) only for BD (P = 9.4×10−9) and psychosis (P = 2.0×10−10). Although the association of rs2709722 in Sp8 transcription factor (SP8) was suggestive in the Asian population (P = 2.1×10−7 for psychosis), this signal weakened when the samples size was increased by including data from a Caucasian population (P = 4.3×10−3). Conclusions: We found 3p21.1 (including PBRM1, strong linkage disequilibrium made it difficult to pinpoint the risk genes) and SP8 as risk loci for BD, SCZ and psychosis. Developmental changes in responsiveness of rat spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) to neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were examined using an explant culture system. Spiral ganglion (SG) explants at embryonic Day 18 (E18), postnatal Day 0 (P0), P5, P10 and P20 were cultured with the addition of either NT-3 or BDNF at various concentrations (0.1-100 ng/ml) and analyzed the dose-response characteristics of three parameters: SGN survival, the number of neurites emanating from the explants and the length of neurite extension. In E18 cultures, SGN survival and neurite number were enhanced more strongly by NT-3 than by the BDNF. As the explants became more mature, the effects of NT-3 decreased, whereas those of BDNF increased, peaking at P0. Although the intrinsic capacity of SGNs to produce and extend neurites declined considerably by P20, they still retained the capacity to respond to both NT-3 and BDNF. These temporal patterns in responsiveness of SGNs to neurotrophins correspond well to the expression pattern of the two neurotrophins in cochlear sensory epithelium in vivo and also correlate with the time course of developmental events in SGNs such as cell death and the establishment of mature hair cell innervation patterns. The way that the development of the inner ear innervation is regulated by various neurotrophic factors and/or their combinations at different postnatal developmental stages remains largely unclear. Moreover, survival and neuritogenesis in deafferented adult neurons is important for cochlear implant function. To address these issues, developmental changes in the responsiveness of postnatal rat spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) to neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) were examined by using a dissociated cell culture system. SGNs at postnatal day (P) 0, P5 and P20 (young adult) were cultured with the addition of NT-3, BDNF, or LIF or of a combination of NT-3 and BDNF (N + B) or of NT-3, BDNF and LIF (ALL factors). SGNs were analyzed for three parameters: survival, longest neurite length (LNL) and neuronal morphology. At P0, SGNs required exposure to N + B or ALL factors for enhanced survival and the ALL factors combination showed a synergistic effect much greater than the sum of the individual factors. At P5, SGNs responded to a wider range of treatment conditions for enhanced survival and combinations showed only an additive improvement over individual factors. The survival percentage of untreated SGNs was highest at P20 but combinations of neurotrophic factors were no more effective than individual factors. LNL of each SGN was enhanced by LIF alone or ALL factors at P0 and P5 but was suppressed by NT-3, BDNF and N + B at P5 in a dose-dependent manner. The LNL at P20 was enhanced by ALL factors and suppressed by N + B. Treatment with ALL factors increased the proportion of SGNs that had two or more primary neurites in all age groups. These findings suggest that NT-3, BDNF, LIF and their combinations predominantly support different ontogenetic events at different developmental stages in the innervation of the inner ear. We investigated age-related changes in the mode of regeneration in the mouse peripheral olfactory system after olfactotoxic drug-induced damage. Mice at postnatal ages of 10 days, 3 months, and 16 months were given an intraperitoneal injection of methimazole to produce damage in the olfactory neuroepithelium. The olfactory neuroepithelia were harvested and analyzed immunohistochemically at various postlesion timepoints, from 1 day through to 94 days, to investigate neuroepithelial cell proliferation, the time course of neuronal differentiation, the reconstitution of neuroepithelium, and the innervation of the olfactory bulb. Functional recovery was assessed using the vanillin avoidance behavioral test. The chronological pattern in the expression of Ki67, beta III tubulin, and olfactory marker protein, molecular markers for neuronal cell proliferation and differentiation, changed similarly among the different age groups. In contrast, the extent of neuroepithelial cell proliferation after injury decreased with age, and the final histological recovery of the olfactory neuroepithelium and the innervation of the olfactory bulb were significantly smaller in the 16-month-old group compared to the younger age groups. These results suggest that the age-related decline in the capacity of olfactory neuroepithelium to reconstitute neuroepithelium is associated with its age-related decrease in proliferative activity after the neuroepithelial injury rather than changes in the process of neuronal differentiation. In spite of these incomplete anatomical recoveries, 16-month-old mice regained the ability to avoid vanillin solution by 1 month postlesion, suggesting that the extent of anatomical epithelial damage is not necessarily proportional to the threshold of olfactory perception. Age-related changes were examined in the distribution and severity of spontaneous lesions in the neuroepithelium and Bowman’s glands in mouse olfactory mucosa. The olfactory mucosa of female ICR mice at postnatal ages from 10 days to 16 months were investigated histologically by hematoxylin and eosin staining, high-iron diamine-Alcian blue (HID-AB) staining, and immunohistochemistry for olfactory marker protein (OMP), βIII tubulin (βIIIT), and Ki67. The lesions in the neuroepithelium and Bowman’s glands were quantitatively assessed by morphometric analyses of sections stained with anti-OMP antibody or HID-AB. The first appearance of neuroepithelial abnormality was observed in the dorsomedial portion of the olfactory mucosa in 5-month-old mice. The distribution and severity of lesions progressed with increasing age. In mildly affected epithelium in which OMP-positive olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) were present but in smaller amounts, the numbers of βIIIT-positive and Ki67-positive neuroepithelial cells tended to be increased, indicating that neurogenesis was upregulated in these areas. In contrast, severely affected epithelium in which OMP-positive ORNs were virtually absent showed high variability in the numbers of βIIIT- and Ki67-positive cells among the areas examined, probably reflecting differences in the capacity of the basal cells remaining in the affected area to generate new neuronal cells. Histological analysis with HID-AB revealed that spontaneous lesions in Bowman’s glands also occurred in aged mouse olfactory mucosa. Lesions in the neuroepithelium and underlying Bowman’s glands tended to be spatially co-localized, suggesting a close association between pathogeneses in these two structures. Moreover, lesions in Bowman’s glands were associated with changes in the biochemical composition of mucus on the olfactory mucosa. The year 2020 became the year of the outbreak of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which escalated into a worldwide pandemic and continued into 2021. One of the unique symptoms of the SARS-CoV-2 disease, COVID-19, is the loss of chemical senses, i.e., smell and taste. Smell training is one of the methods used in facilitating recovery of the olfactory sense, and it uses essential oils of lemon, rose, clove, and eucalyptus. These essential oils were not selected based on their chemical constituents. Although scientific studies have shown that they improve recovery, there may be better combinations for facilitating recovery. Many phytochemicals have bioactive properties with anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects. In this review, we describe the chemical compounds with anti- inflammatory and anti-viral effects, and we list the plants that contain these chemical compounds. We expand the review from terpenes to the less volatile flavonoids in order to propose a combination of essential oils and diets that can be used to develop a new taste training method, as there has been no taste training so far. Conclusions. Data about the recovery course of facial function after intratemporal facial nerve reconstruction using interposition nerve graft would provide useful information for clinicians to understand the regenerative process of the facial nerve after this type of surgery. It would also enable them to obtain informed consent from the patients by preoperatively explaining the predicted outcome of the postoperative facial paralysis. Objective. The purpose of this study was to describe the recovery course of facial movement and electrophysiological findings after intratemporal facial nerve reconstruction using interposition graft. Patients and methods. Five patients who underwent reconstruction of the facial nerve using interposition nerve graft immediately after facial nerve excision during surgery for temporal bone lesions were included in this study. Each patient was evaluated for facial movement (Yanagihara score), blink reflex (BR), and electroneurography (ENoG) preoperatively and postoperatively. Results. Improvement in facial movement began 8-10 months postoperatively. The score then gradually increased, and reached a plateau level by 2 years following surgery. The final score in four of the five patients ranged from 20 to 24 points, while the facial score of one patient only reached 12 points even at 3 years after surgery. All patients demonstrated moderate to severe synkinesis. The reappearance of R1 in BR occurred 7-10 months postoperatively, almost simultaneously with the beginning of recovery of facial movement. The latency of R1 on the operated side became shortened with increasing postoperative time, although it remained considerably longer than that on the unoperated side, even after 2 postoperative years. The onset of recovery of ENoG value (10-12 months postoperatively) was always delayed compared with the actual facial movement recovery and never returned to the level in the unoperated side. Conclusion. The present study demonstrated the age-related decrease in the axonal diameter of the olfactory nerve. Conclusion. This study suggested that nitric oxide (NO) takes part in the parasympathetic nerve control functions mainly through m3 receptors and subsequently through m1 receptors. Objectives. The regulation of glandular secretions and vasomotor tone in human nasal mucosa implicates muscarinic receptors. There are five recognized classes (m1-m5) of muscarinic receptor subtypes. NO is a free radical gas that has been found to be produced in neuronal cells by the action of enzyme neural nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). The aim of this study was to identify the colocalization of muscarinic receptor subtypes (m1-m5) and nNOS in the human inferior turbinate mucosa. Materials and methods. Human inferior turbinate mucosa was stained by using the antibody of muscarine receptor subtypes and nNOS in an immunohistochemical double-staining method. Results. The colocalization of m3 receptors and nNOS-immunoreactive nerve fibers was most extensively distributed on glands, vessels, and epithelium in all muscarinic receptor subtypes. These findings lead us to propose that NO also acts as a neurotransmitter in glands, vessels, and epithelium of the human nasal mucosa and can be assigned to parasympathetic nerve structures through m3 receptors mainly and m1 receptors subsequently. Abstract: We investigated age-related changes in the distribution and proliferation of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) in postnatal mouse olfactory mucosa. In contrast to reported data on other glial cell types in the peripheral and central nervous systems, OEC cell density in the olfactory nerve bundles in the lamina propria remained almost constant from 10 days through 16 months of age. Electron microscopy of the nerve bundles revealed that axon packing density also was constant during that period. These findings suggest that the ratio of the number of OECs to the unit length of the olfactory neuron axons ensheathed by them does not change markedly throughout the lifetime of mice in an undisturbed condition. By contrast, OEC proliferative density decreased rapidly in the 10-day to 1-month-old period, showing a significant difference, and for the rest of life remained at low level, similar to previous values reported for other glial cell types. In cold-blooded animals, lost sensory hair cells can be replaced via a process of regenerative cell proliferation of epithelial supporting cells. In contrast, in mammalian cochlea, receptor (hair) cells are believed to be produced only during embryogenesis; after maturity, sensory or supporting cell proliferation or regeneration are thought to occur neither under normal conditions nor after trauma. Using bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) as a proliferation marker, we have assessed cell proliferation activity in the mature organ of Corti in the cochlea of young guinea pigs following severe damage to the outer hair cells induced by kanamycin sulfate and ethacrynic acid. Although limited, we have found BrdU-labeled nuclei in the regions of Deiters cells when BrdU is given for 3 days or longer. When BrdU is given for 10 days, at least one labeled nucleus can be observed in the organ of Corti in approximately half of the ears; proliferating cells typically appear as paired daughters, with one nucleus being displaced away from the basement membrane to the position expected of the hair cells. Double-staining with antibodies to cytokeratin, vimentin, and p27 have shown that the BrdU-labeled nuclei are located in cells phenotypically similar to Deiters cells. Most of the uptake of BrdU occurs 3–5 days following ototoxic insult, and the number of BrdU-labeled cells does not decrease until 30 days following insult. These findings indicate that Deiters cells in the mature mammalian cochlea maintain a limited competence to re-enter the cell cycle and proliferate after hair cell injury, and that they can survive at least for 1 month. Pleomorphic adenoma, the most common type of tumor of the parotid gland, may transform into a malignant tumor. In the current study, we investigated whether the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 COX-2) is elevated in adenocarcinoma as compared to pleomorphic adenoma. Ten pleomorphic adenomas and 10 adenocarcinomas were examined. The tumor specimens were immunohistochemically stained with antibodies against COX-2 and Ki-67. The labeling indices of COX-2 in pleomorphic adenoma and adenocarcinoma were 6.0% ± 4. 1 % and 16.1% ± 4.6%, respectively, and those of Ki-67 in pleomorphic adenoma and adenocarcinoma were 0.77% ± 0.62% and 6.9% ± 6.6%, respectively. The labeling indices of both COX-2 urn! Ki-67 were significantly greater (p < .001) in adenocarcinoma than in pleomorphic adenoma. Together with the biological effects of (COX-2. these results suggest that overexpression of COX-2 plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of malignant transformation of pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland. Cell proliferation in the cochleae of guinea pigs and rats was investigated after systemic application of kanamycin sulfate (KM) and ethacrynic acid (EA). Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was injected daily for 10 days, after which the number of BrdU-positive cells was counted in paraffin sections of the cochlea. Only a few BrdU-positive cells were present in the spiral ligament and among the acoustic nerve fibers in the non-deafened control animals. Animals treated with KM and EA had profound hearing loss and significant increases in the number of BrdU-positive cells in the spiral ligament and among the acoustic nerve fibers. No BrdU-positive cells were found in the auditory sensory epithelium of any animal. These findings suggest that in the mature mammalian cochlea cell proliferation increases in nonsensory regions after ototoxic damage but may not occur in the auditory sensory epithelium. Abstract:We prospectively examined the effect of leukocytapheresis (LA) on the maintenance of remission in 7 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) who were initially refractory to corticosteroid therapy (steroid resistant or steroid dependent). The patients with refractory UC had been in remission due to LA (induction LA) in combination with the steroid therapy. They were then treated with LA once or twice a month for the purpose of maintaining remission (maintenance LA). The maintenance LA was performed by either a centrifuge method in 5 patients or a polyester adsorbent column method in 2 patients. Steroid dosage was gradually tapered as little as possible without recurrence based on clinical and/or colonoscopical judgments. Four patients were maintained in remission without steroids over 12 months. Recurrence was observed in 3 patients at 3, 3, and 6 months after the beginning of the maintenance LA, respectively. Two of the 3 patients were again conducted to remission by the second induction LA and maintained in remission by the second maintenance LA. Two patients finally underwent total colectomy because of recurrence of UC in a severe form. It is concluded that the maintenance LA therapy might be effective in some patients with steroid dependent or resistant UC for the maintenance of remission without steroids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Design, Patients and Mesurement Results Conclusions Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is considered a very aggressive carcinoma and has been difficult to treat with therapeutic strategies. This study examines the landscape of genomic alteration in ATC, including the BRAF V600E mutation, and its clinical implications.A retrospective observational study was conducted using collected at the Center for Cancer Genomics and Advanced Therapeutics (C‐CAT) in Japan, utilizing comprehensive genomic profiling data from 102 ATC cases. Additionally, AACR‐GENIE data from 267 cases were analysed for validation. Statistical methods, including the conditional Kendall tau statistic and χ2 tests, were employed for survival analysis and gene mutation comparisons.Among 102 ATCs, BRAF, RAS, and other driver mutations were found in 83 cases (81.2%). The prevalence of BRAF V600E mutations was as high as 60%. Co‐mutation analysis identified different genomic profiles in the BRAF, RAS, and wild‐type groups. Despite the diverse molecular backgrounds, no significant differences in clinical variables and overall survival were observed. The analysis considering left‐side amputation suggested that RAS mutations had a poorer prognosis. In the BRAF/RAS wild‐type group, FGFR1 and NF1 were identified as driver mutations, with an accumulation of copy number variations and less TERT promoter mutations. This molecular subgrouping was also supported by the AACR‐GENIE data.Comprehensive genomic analysis of ATC in Japan revealed distinct molecular subgroups, highlighting the importance of BRAF V600E mutations, particularly V600E, as potential therapeutic targets and suggest the relevance of tailor‐made therapeutic strategies based on genomic profiling. Purpose: To discuss the different swallowing improvement surgeries that address one or more dysfunctional pharyngolaryngeal structures causing dysphagia. These surgeries reduce the risk of aspiration without sacrificing vocal function. Methods: We searched the PubMed database and used Google Scholar search engine to find studies discussing the different swallowing improvement surgeries. A manual search of references in selected articles and reviews was done as well. No chronologic limitation was set for the studies; however, only articles written in English and Japanese were considered. Due to the nature of this article, no particular inclusion or exclusion criteria were set when searching for studies to be used as references; however, all relevant studies were reviewed and agreed upon by the authors for inclusion in this review article. Results/discussion: Surgeries to improve swallowing function can be categorized into those that reinforce nasopharyngeal closure or pharyngeal contraction, improve laryngeal elevation or pharyngoesophageal segment opening, and those that improve vocal fold closure to protect the airway during swallowing. They are an effective alternative treatment that may significantly improve these patients' quality of life. Swallowing rehabilitation with the altered pharyngolaryngeal structures is required post-operatively to significantly improve patients' dysphagia. Conclusions: Surgeries to improve swallowing function address specific dysfunctional sites involved in the swallowing mechanism. Vocal fold motion impairment (VFMI) is the inappropriate movement of the vocal folds during respiration, leading to vocal fold adduction and/or abduction problems and causing respiratory and vocal impairments. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are a wide range of disorders characterized by progressive loss of neurons and deposition of altered proteins in the brain and peripheral organs. VFMI may be unrecognized in patients with NDDs. VFMI in NDDs is caused by the following: laryngeal muscle weakness due to muscular atrophy, caused by brainstem and motor neuron degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; hyperactivity of laryngeal adductors in Parkinson's disease; and varying degrees of laryngeal adductor hypertonia and abductor paralysis in multiple system atrophy. Management of VFMI depends on whether there is a presence of glottic insufficiency or insufficient glottic opening with/without severe dysphagia. VFMI treatment options for glottic insufficiency range from surgical interventions, including injection laryngoplasty and medialization thyroplasty, to behavioral therapies; for insufficient glottic opening, various options are available based on the severity and underlying cause of the condition, including continuous positive airway pressure therapy, botulinum toxin injection, tracheostomy, vocal fold surgery, or a combination of interventions. In this review, we outline the mechanisms, clinical features, and management of VFMI in NDDs and provide a guide for physicians who may encounter these clinical features in their patients. NDDs are always progressive; hence, timely evaluation, proper diagnosis, and appropriate management of the patient will greatly affect their vocal, respiratory, and swallowing functions as well as their quality of life. Several epidemiological and genetic studies have suggested that the risk of type II diabetes (T2D) is likely to overlap with the susceptibility to psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). In this study, we aimed to examine the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) detected in previous T2D genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with SCZ, BD and psychosis (SCZ plus BD). A total of 37 SNPs were selected from the literature. A two-stage analysis was conducted using a first set of screening samples (total N=3037) and a second set of replication samples (N=4950). None of the SNPs showed a significant association to the screening samples after correction for multiple testing. To avoid type II error, we genotyped the top three SNPs in BCL11A, HMG20A and HNF4A showing associations with any of the phenotypes (Puncorrected <0.01) using independent samples to replicate the nominal associations. However, we were unable to find any significant associations based on the screening results (Puncorrected>0.05). Our findings did not support the shared genetic risk between T2D and psychotic disorders in the Japanese population. However, further replication using a larger sample size is required. Abstract: Previous studies have suggested that the severity of facial paralysis after superselective intra-arterial chemotherapy (SSIAC) is usually mild. Here we present two cases of facial paralysis after SSIAC via the middle meningeal artery (MMA). In case 1, the patient completely recovered from his facial paralysis (to H-B grade I) in 6 months after the onset of paralysis. However, in case 2, his facial movement remained at House-Brackmann (H-B) grade IV with severe synkinesis. • The skyrmion Hall effect is investigated using two different methods. • Two different methods are the LLG equation and the Thiele equation. • Two different methods give the different dependence of the Gilbert damping constant. • Distortion of skyrmions are strongly related with off-diagonal components of dissipative tensor. We investigate the skyrmion Hall effect using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation and the Thiele equation, respectively. Then, we find that these methods give different values for the ratio of in-plane skyrmion velocity components when the Gilbert damping constant is relatively small. Since the Thiele equation is derived from the LLG equation by assuming that the skyrmion structure does not change and behaves like a rigid body, the above result suggests that this assumption does not hold when the Gilbert damping constant is relatively small. Therefore, we conclude that the Thiele equation can not describe the systems precisely under the relatively small Gilbert damping constant due to the distortion of the skyrmion structure and that it is mandatory to solve the LLG equation numerically in order to investigate the skyrmion Hall effect accurately. We have investigated the spin transport in ferromagnet (FM)/semiconductor (SC)/ferromagnet (FM) structures with a central SC barrier region exhibiting cubic Dresselhaus spin-orbit-interaction (SOI). The energy profile of the barrier is assumed to be a square with height V and thickness d along z-direction. The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio has been calculated for three different barriers, GaAs, GaSb, and GaAs without SOI as a function of barrier thickness. We have found that the MR ratio has a negative value for GaAs barrier with SOI except for very thin barrier thickness. In the case of GaSb barrier, the MR ratio changes sign from negative to positive with increasing the barrier thickness. Also, we have calculated the MR ratio with changing the spin coupling constant. To determine if tokishakuyakusan (TSS) is effective for treating post-infectious olfactory dysfunction (PIOD) compared with vitamin B 12 (mecobalamin). We conducted a randomized, nonblinded clinical trial. Patients with PIOD enrolled in 17 hospitals and clinics from 2016 to 2020 were randomly divided into two groups, and we administered TSS or mecobalamin for 24 weeks. Their olfactory function was examined using interviews and T&T olfactometry. The improvement of olfactory dysfunction was assessed following the criteria of the Japanese Rhinologic Society. Overall, 82 patients with PIOD were enrolled in this study. In the TSS and mecobalamin groups, 39 patients completed the medication regimen. In the TSS and mecobalamin groups, olfactory dysfunction was significantly improved based on self-reports and olfactory test results. The improvement rate of olfactory dysfunction was 56% in the TSS group and 59% in the mecobalamin group. Early intervention within 3 months produced a better prognosis than the treatment initiated after 4 months. Furthermore, age and sex differences were not observed. Objectives: A diagnostic indicator for the differentiation of inverted papillomas (IPs) from inflammatory nasal polyps (NPs) has not been established. This study aimed to evaluate whether CT attenuation values relative to those of the brainstem (relative CT number) could be useful for differentiating IPs from NPs.Material and Methods: Consecutive patients who were pathologically diagnosed with IP or NP between 2005 and 2019 were retrospectively identified. Relative CT numbers were compared between the two patient groups. The factors with predictive power for differentiating IPs from NPs were identified by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.Results: One hundred and twenty-two sinonasal masses were finally analysed (IP, 51 cases; NP, 71 cases). Relative CT numbers were significantly higher in IP than in NP (P < 0.001). Univariate logistic regression analysis showed relative CT number, bone erosion and bone thickening to have predictive value for differentiating IPs from NPs (relative CT number, P < 0.001; bone erosion, p = 0.04; bone thickening, P < 0.001). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, relative CT number and bone thickening had predictive value for distinguishing IP from NP (relative CT number, p < 0.001; bone thickening, p = 0.02). The optimum cut off value calculation from the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve indicated that a relative CT number >1.3 was significantly associated with IP (sensitivity, 72.6%; specificity, 87.3%). Introduction: Proper management of aspirated material above the tracheostomy tube cuff is crucial to prevent complications, such as aspiration pneumonia. This study aimed to thoroughly examine the effects of aspirated liquid viscosity, suction port positioning, and tube tilt angle on residual volume above the cuff (RVAC). Methods: Five types of tracheostomy tubes (approximately 9 mm outer diameter) were placed through a transparent cylinder with an inner diameter of 18 mm. The cuff was inflated to completely seal the interior of the cylinder. Four liquids with different viscosities were poured onto the cuff, and the liquid above the cuff was suctioned from the side port. The cylinder was angled at 90° and 20°, and each test was performed thrice to determine the average RVAC. Results: After side-port suctioning, some liquid residue was observed on the cuff of all tracheostomy tubes. The RVAC increased with higher liquid viscosity. The tubes with a longer distance from the suction port opening to the cuff top exhibited more RVAC. Moreover, the RVAC was almost the same regardless of the cylinder angle for tubes with a suction port on the lateral side. However, tubes with backside ports showed a decreased RVAC with cylinder tilt. Conclusions: This study underscores the persistence of residual material on cuffed tracheostomy tubes even with regular subglottic secretion drainage. This emphasizes the need for specialized tracheostomy tube development aimed at reducing post-suction RVAC. Objective: To investigate whether machine learning (ML)‐based algorithms, namely logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), k‐nearest neighbor (k‐NN), and gradient‐boosting decision tree (GBDT), utilizing early post‐onset parameters can predict facial synkinesis resulting from Bell's palsy or Ramsay Hunt syndrome more accurately than the conventional statistics‐based LR. Methods: This retrospective study included 362 patients who presented to a facial palsy outpatient clinic. Median follow‐up of synkinesis‐positive and ‐negative patients was 388 (range, 177–1922) and 198 (range, 190–3021) days, respectively. Electrophysiological examinations were performed, and the rate of synkinesis in Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome was evaluated. Sensitivity and specificity were assessed using statistics‐based LR; and electroneurography (ENoG) value, the difference in the nerve excitability test (NET), and scores of the subjective Yanagihara scaling system were evaluated using early post‐onset parameters with ML‐based LR, RF, k‐NN, and GBDT. Results: Synkinesis rate in Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome was 20.2% (53/262) and 40.0% (40/100), respectively. Sensitivity and specificity obtained with statistics‐based LR were 0.796 and 0.806, respectively, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.87. AUCs measured using ML‐based LR of "ENoG," "difference in NET," "Yanagihara," and all three components ("all") were 0.910, 0.834, 0.711, and 0.901, respectively. Conclusion: ML‐based LR model shows potential in predicting facial synkinesis probability resulting from Bell's palsy or Ramsay Hunt syndrome and has comparable reliability to the conventional statistics‐based LR. Cholesterol granulomas (CGs) are frequently found in the temporal bone, but their presence in the facial nerve has not been reported. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with left facial palsy caused by a CG that appeared to have originated in the facial nerve. Temporal bone computed tomography (CT) revealed soft tissue masses in the left middle ear spaces, and the facial canal was dilated from the genu to the vertical portion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed high signal intensity on T1-weighted images and partially high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, although no significant enhancement was observed on gadolinium-enhanced MRI. Surgical findings revealed CG in the middle ear spaces, but the facial canal remained intact and lacked continuity with the internal mass. Histopathological analysis verified the mass as a CG accompanied by cholesterol crystals. The mass was located within and continuous with the epineurium. These findings indicate that hemorrhage in the facial canal may have triggered the formation of the CG, causing left facial palsy due to increased pressure in the facial canal. Objective: To investigate the clinical and electrophysiological features of facial nerve paralysis (FNP) due to benign temporal bone masses (TBMs) and elucidate its differences as compared with Bell's palsy.Methods: FNP assessed by the House-Brackmann (HB) grading system and by electroneurography (ENoG) were compared retrospectively.Results: We reviewed 914 patient records and identified 31 patients with FNP due to benign TBMs. Moderate FNP (HB Grades II-IV) was dominant for facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) (n=15), whereas severe FNP (Grades V and VI) was dominant for cholesteatomas (n=8) and hemangiomas (n=3). The average ENoG value was 19.8% for FNS, 15.6% for cholesteatoma, and 0% for hemangioma. Analysis of the correlation between HB grade and ENoG value for FNP due to TBMs and Bell's palsy revealed that given the same ENoG value, the corresponding HB grade was better for FNS, followed by cholesteatoma, and worst in Bell's palsy.Conclusions: Facial nerve damage caused by benign TBMs could depend on the underlying pathology. Facial movement and ENoG values did not correlate when comparing TBMs and Bell's palsy. When the HB grade is found to be unexpectedly better than the ENoG value, TBMs should be included in the differential diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
