Abstract

Magnets, with topologically-nontrivial Dirac/Weyl points, have recently attracted significant attention owing to the unconventional physical properties, such as large anomalous Hall effects. However, they typically have a high carrier density and complicated band structure near the Fermi energy. In this study, we report degenerate magnetic semiconductor EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$, which exhibits a single valley at the $\Gamma$ point, where the field-tunable Weyl points form via the magnetic exchange interaction with the local Eu spins. By the high-field measurements on high-quality single crystals, we observed the quantum oscillations in resistivity, elastic constant, and surface impedance, which enabled us to determine the position of the Fermi energy. In combination with the first-principles calculation, we revealed that the Weyl points are located in the vicinity of the Fermi energy when the Eu spins are fully polarized. Furthermore, we observed large anomalous Hall effect (Hall angle $\Theta_{\mathrm{AH}}\sim0.07$) in the forced ferromagnetic phase, which is consistent with this field variation of band structure., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

10. Thermally assisted Pauli spin blockade in double quantum dots

Abstract

We investigate the influence of thermal energy on the current flow and electron spin states in double quantum dots in series. The quadruplet Pauli spin blockade, which is caused by the quadruplet and doublet states, occurs at low temperatures affecting the transport properties. As the temperature increases, the quadruplet Pauli spin blockade occurs as a result of the thermal energy, even in regions where it does not occur at low temperatures. This is because the triplet state is formed in one dot as a result of the gradual change of the Fermi distribution function of the electrodes with increasing temperature. Moreover, the thermally assisted Pauli spin blockade results in coexistence of the Coulomb and Pauli spin blockades. Conversely, for the standard triplet Pauli spin blockade, which occurs as a result of the triplet and singlet states, the current through the double dots monotonously smears out as the temperature increases. Therefore, the thermally assisted Pauli spin blockade is not clearly observed. However, the coexistence of the Coulomb and triplet Pauli spin blockades as a result of the thermal energy is clearly obtained in the calculation of the probability of the spin state in the double dots., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Abstract

Unconventional features of relativistic Dirac/Weyl quasi-particles in topological materials are most evidently manifested in the 2D quantum Hall effect (QHE), whose variety is further enriched by their spin and/or valley polarization. Although its extension to three dimensions has been long-sought and inspired theoretical proposals, material candidates have been lacking. Here we have discovered valley-contrasting spin-polarized Dirac fermions in a multilayer form in bulk antiferromagnet BaMnSb$_2$, where the out-of-plane Zeeman-type spin splitting is induced by the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the distorted Sb square net. Furthermore, we have observed well-defined quantized Hall plateaus together with vanishing interlayer conductivity at low temperatures as a hallmark of the half-integer QHE in a bulk form. The Hall conductance of each layer is found to be nearly quantized to $2(N+1/2)e^2/h$ with $N$ being the Landau index, which is consistent with two spin-polarized Dirac valleys protected by the strong spin-valley coupling., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) will carry out a sensitive dark matter search by measuring low-energy ($\mathrm{E} < 0.25 \mathrm{GeV/nucleon}$) cosmic ray antinuclei. The primary targets are low-energy antideuterons produced in the annihilation or decay of dark matter. At these energies antideuterons from secondary/tertiary interactions are expected to have very low fluxes, significantly below those predicted by well-motivated, beyond the standard model theories. GAPS will also conduct low-energy antiproton and antihelium searches. Combined, these observations will provide a powerful search for dark matter and provide the best observations to date on primordial black hole evaporation on Galactic length scales. The GAPS instrument detects antinuclei using the novel exotic atom technique. It consists of a central tracker with a surrounding time-of-flight (TOF) system. The tracker is a one cubic meter volume containing 10 cm-diameter lithium-drifted silicon (Si(Li)) detectors. The TOF is a plastic scintillator system that will both trigger the Si(Li) tracker and enable better reconstruction of particle tracks. After coming to rest in the tracker, antinuclei will form an excited exotic atom. This will then de-excite via characteristic X-ray transitions before producing a pion/proton star when the antiparticle annihilates with the nucleus. This unique event topology will give GAPS the nearly background-free detection capability required for a rare-event search. Patients were recruited if they had received anti-VEGF agents for BRVO-ME treatment and included 30 patients (30 eyes) without glaucoma (G[-] group) and 27 patients (27 eyes) with glaucoma (G[+] group). The central retinal thickness (CRT) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 3 months after a single injection of anti-VEGF agents were compared between the two groups.Results: Before treatment, the mean±standard deviation of the CRT was 514.2± 117.3 μm for the G[-] group, which was not significantly different from that for the G[+] group (533.4± 171.4 μm). The CRT in the G[-] and G[+] groups significantly reduced to 321.1± 114.6 μm and 347.8± 134.7 μm, respectively, at 1 month after the injection and to 360.4± 159.5 μm and 352.4± 151.9 μm, respectively, at 3 months after the injection (P< 0.01 for each group). The difference in the degree of CRT reduction between the two groups was not significant. Before treatment, the BCVA was 0.42± 0.32 logMAR units in the G[-] group and 0.57± 0.33 logMAR units in the G[+] group, showing no significant difference. The BCVA in the G[-] and G[+] groups improved significantly to 0.27± 0.26 logMAR units and 0.34± 0.42 logMAR units, respectively, at 1 month, and to 0.18± 0.20 logMAR units and 0.39± 0.34 logMAR units, respectively, at 3 months (P< 0.01). The survey included sociodemographic questions and validated tools to measure depressive symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS]), medical students’ empathy for patients (Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Student version [JSE]), ADHD traits (ADHD Self-Report Scale Screener [ASRS Screener]), and ASD traits (Autism-Spectrum Quotient Japanese version-21 [AQ-J-21]).Results: A total of 151 students (response rate: 74.7%) participated in the survey. Of these, 41 (27.2%) reported a total score of ≥ 20 on the HADS and were categorized as depressed. Depressed students reported significantly lower and higher rates of having a part-time job and a history of enrolment in other faculties, respectively, than non-depressed students. According to the cutoff criteria of the ASRS Screener and AQ-J-21, 31 (20.5%) and 42 (27.8%) students reported ADHD and ASD traits, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis, controlling for age and sex, reported that higher age, ASRS Screener scores, and AQ-J-21 scores were significant predictors of higher HADS total scores. Additionally, higher AQ-J-21 scores significantly predicted lower JSE scores.Conclusion: The degree of ADHD and ASD traits was significantly associated with depression. Moreover, the degree of ASD traits was significantly associated with lower empathy for their patients. It is important to consider that about 20– 30% of medical students have these neurodevelopmental traits and to develop intervention strategies for improving depression and empathy.Keywords: medical education, neurodevelopmental traits, mental health, empathetic attitudes

Three patients with inflamed conjunctival nevus were examined by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and the findings before and after the treatments were compared.Results: All three patients had a slightly pigmented and edematous conjunctival tumor at the corneal limbal area. The tumors were hyperemic, and papillae and follicles were present on the superior conjunctiva in all patients. All of the patients had an allergic predisposition. The antiallergic treatment not only resolved the hyperemia and edema of the palpebral conjunctiva, but also reduced the tumor size. In one case, the topical antiallergic agent alone led to a reduction of the tumor size. 20. Regional carbon fluxes from land use and land cover change in Asia, 1980-2009

Abstract

We present a synthesis of the land-atmosphere carbon flux from land use and land cover change (LULCC) in Asia using multiple data sources and paying particular attention to deforestation and forest regrowth fluxes. The data sources are quasi-independent and include the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization-Forest Resource Assessment (FAO-FRA 2015; country-level inventory estimates), the Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGARv4.3), the 'Houghton' bookkeeping model that incorporates FAO-FRA data, an ensemble of 8 state-of-the-art Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVM), and 2 recently published independent studies using primarily remote sensing techniques. The estimates are aggregated spatially to Southeast, East, and South Asia and temporally for three decades, 1980-1989, 1990-1999 and 2000-2009. Since 1980, net carbon emissions from LULCC in Asia were responsible for 20%-40% of global LULCC emissions, with emissions from Southeast Asia alone accounting for 15%-25% of global LULCC emissions during the same period. In the 2000s and for all Asia, three estimates (FAO-FRA, DGVM, Houghton) were in agreement of a net source of carbon to the atmosphere, with mean estimates ranging between 0.24 to 0.41 Pg C yr-1, whereas EDGARv4.3 suggested a net carbon sink of -0.17 Pg C yr-1. Three of 4 estimates suggest that LULCC carbon emissions declined by at least 34% in the preceding decade (1990-2000). Spread in the estimates is due to the inclusion of different flux components and their treatments, showing the importance to include emissions from carbon rich peatlands and land management, such as shifting cultivation and wood harvesting, which appear to be consistently underreported.

A recent study in Japanese patients with dysmenorrhea (NCT01892904) reported a significant reduction in the number of days with menstrual pain after treatment with a flexible extended regimen of ethinylestradiol (EE)/drospirenone (DRSP) compared with a cyclic regimen. However, individual patients’ menstrual pain patterns and intensities were not indicated. Heatmapping was used to visualize menstrual pain patterns and intensities by re-evaluating the previously published data from NCT01892904.Patients and Methods: NCT01892904 was a Phase III, multicenter, randomized, open-label, active-control study of 212 women aged ≥ 20 years randomized 1:1 to receive flexible extended or 28-day cyclic EE/DRSP treatment. Daily pain levels were recorded in patient diaries, and menstrual pain patterns and intensities were visualized using heatmapping. Patients were stratified by baseline dysmenorrhea scores and primary or secondary dysmenorrhea.Results: The heatmap data demonstrated that EE/DRSP reduced the degree of menstrual pain. Regular peaks of menstrual pain were alleviated in the extended regimen group but were still observed in the cyclic regimen group. While a decrease in the days with menstrual pain was observed in patients with higher baseline dysmenorrhea scores (5– 6), those with lower baseline scores (3– 4) were more likely to experience lower intensities of menstrual pain. Although pain relief was less likely in patients with secondary dysmenorrhea, those who had lower baseline dysmenorrhea scores (3– 4) and received the flexible extended regimen experienced a greater reduction in the number of days with menstrual pain than those who received the cyclic regimen.Conclusion: Heatmapping effectively visualized the daily burden of menstrual pain in Japanese patients with dysmenorrhea. Abstract

The forward η mesons production has been observed by the Large Hadron Collider forward (LHCf) experiment in proton-proton collision at √s=13 TeV. This paper presents the measurement of the inclusive production rate of η in pT < 1.1 GeV/c, expressed as a function of the Feynman-x variable. These results are compared with the predictions of several hadronic interaction models commonly used for the modelling of the air showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. This is both the first measurement of η mesons from LHCf and the first time a particle containing strange quarks has been observed in the forward region for high-energy collisions. These results will provide a powerful constraint on hadronic interaction models for the purpose of improving the understanding of the processes underlying the air showers produced in the Earth’s atmosphere by ultra-energetic cosmic rays. Abstract

The Aguas Zarcas meteorite is a new CM2 chondrite which fell on 23 April 2019 (local time) in Costa Rica. Aguas Zarcas is brecciated and contains several different lithologies, e.g., metal-rich lithology and CI-like lithology. This fresh CM2 chondrite gives us good op-portunities for analyses of organic matter (OM) without terrestrial contamination and weathering, particularly some stones which were collected before rain fell over the fall site. We also aim to characterize local hetero-geneities and associations of organic and mineral phases using state-of-the-art microscopic techniques to con-strain the origin and evolutionally processes of OM during pre- and post-accretion.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to improve these broad dimensions of psychopathology in addition to PD symptoms. However, little is known about the predictors of treatment response in comorbid psychiatric symptoms after CBT for PD. Recent studies suggest that anxiety sensitivity (AS) may be a key vulnerability for PD. This study aimed to examine AS as a predictor of broad dimensions of psychopathology after CBT for PD. Materials and methods: In total, 118 patients with PD were treated with manualized group CBT. We used multiple regression analysis to examine the associations between 3 Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) factors (physical concerns, mental incapacitation concerns, and social concerns) at baseline and the subscales of the Symptom Checklist-90 Revised (SCL-90-R) at endpoint. Results: Low levels of social concerns at baseline predicted low levels on 5 SCL-90-R subscales after CBT: interpersonal sensitivity, depression, hostility, paranoid ideation, and psychosis. High levels of mental incapacitation concerns significantly predicted low levels on 3 SCL-90-R subscales after treatment: interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, and paranoid ideation. Physical concerns at baseline did not predict broad dimensions of psychopathology. Conclusion: This study suggested that the social concerns and mental incapacitation concerns subscales of the ASI at baseline predicted several dimensions of psychopathology after CBT for PD. To improve comorbid psychopathology, it may be useful to direct more attention to these ASI subscales. Low-dose estrogen/progestin combined oral contraceptives have been shown to reduce the severity of dysmenorrhea symptoms, and a 28-day cyclic regimen of ethinylestradiol/drospirenone (28d regimen) is approved for this indication in Japan. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of a flexible extended regimen of ethinylestradiol/drospirenone (flexible regimen) in Japanese women with dysmenorrhea. Methods: This multicenter, open-label study was performed in Japanese women with dysmenorrhea who, after a baseline observational phase, were randomized to receive ethinylestradiol 20 µg/drospirenone 3 mg in a flexible regimen (one tablet each day for 24–120 days followed by a 4-day tablet-free interval) or in the standard 28d regimen (one tablet each day for 24 days, followed by 4 days of placebo tablets for six cycles). The primary endpoint was the number of days with dysmenorrhea of at least mild intensity over a 140-day evaluation period. Dysmenorrhea scores, bleeding patterns, and other pain-related parameters were also assessed. Results: A total of 216 women (mean age 29.7 years) were randomized to the flexible regimen (n=108) or 28d regimen (n=108) and 212 were included in the full analysis sets (flexible regimen, n=105; 28d regimen, n=107). Women in the flexible-regimen group reported a mean of 3.4 fewer days with dysmenorrheic pain than women in the 28d-regimen group, with similar decreases in disease severity reported in both treatment groups. According to the investigators, 64.8% and 59.4% of women in the flexible-regimen and 28d-regimen treatment groups had “very much improved” or “much improved” disease, while 54.3% and 50.9% of patients reported being “very much satisfied” or “much satisfied” with their treatment, respectively. Conclusion: In Japanese women with dysmenorrhea, a flexible extended regimen of ethinylestradiol/drospirenone decreased the number of days with dysmenorrheic pain versus the traditional 28d regimen.
