The nasal septum is a key component of the nasal structure, affecting proper airflow and providing support for the nasal structures. A deviated septum (DSN) can lead to breathing disorders, impaired nasal patency, recurrent nosebleeds, olfactory disorders and frequent upper respiratory tract infections. In competitive sports, where ventilation performance is critical, septal deviation can adversely affect athletic performance. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of septoplasty on patients' physical performance. Methodes This article is based on the available literature found in the Google Scholar, PubMed database with the use of key words such as ,,septoplasty'', ,,nasal septal deviation'', ,,septoplasty quality of life'', ,,nasal septal deviation athletes'', ,,septoplasty sport'', ,,nasal obstruction sport''. Results Conducted studies show that surgical correction of a deviated nasal septum improves physical performance as well as respiratory and cardiovascular functions. Restoring proper airflow through the nose after surgery leads to a noticeable improvement in physical performance, highlighting the significance of septoplasty in enhancing patient comfort and improving athletic outcomes.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the 8th most common condition in the modern world. Unfortunately, it becomes more and more frequent and constitutes a significant global health problem, affecting millions of people worldwide. Therefore, its treatment is an important topic among researchers all over the world. It has been the subject of many trials, so it will eventually be as effective, secure, and comfortable for patients as it possibly can be. That is why updating and assembling current knowledge is the key to organizing information. This paper focuses on pharmacological treatment and nutritional guidelines for CKD pre-dialysis patients, as well as physical activity outcomes. It aims to summarize this knowledge, educate, and help doctors in their daily clinical work.

Introduction: Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological condition that continues to pose therapeutic challenges. Despite the availability of various antiepileptic medications, up to one-third of patients still experience insufficient control of their seizures. One approach to managing epilepsy, particularly in drug-resistant cases, is the ketogenic diet. This diet, along with its variations, has shown effectiveness in reducing seizures across all age groups, with additional improvements in behavior. However, despite numerous studies, the exact mechanisms behind its therapeutic effects and potential risks to the body remain unclear. This review of the current literature outlines the fundamental principles and variations of the ketogenic diet, evaluates its safety and effectiveness in treating epilepsy, and explores the possible mechanisms underlying its success. Materials and methods: This article is based on the literature found in the PubMed database with the use of keywords like: "drug resistance epilepsy", "ketogenic diet", "epilepsy treatment". Conclusion: The ketogenic diet is an effective treatment for epilepsy, especially drug-resistant forms. It reduces the number of seizures and it also has a positive effect on patients' sleep and cognitive functions. Despite many years of using the diet and observing its effects we still do not fully understand its mechanisms of action.

Migraine is a common and debilitating neurological disorder. It is crucial to realize that migraines are distinguished from other types of headaches. People suffering from migraine are often unable to function normally, neglecting work and daily duties. The associated costs burden not only the patients but also their family and social life. What is more, many psychiatric comorbidities are common in migraine patients. Because of all these factors, preventive treatment is essential because it can decrease migraine frequency and improve quality of life. There are many preventative medications but satisfactory improvement in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks may not be achieved without modification of lifestyle including taking care of physical activity and supplementation. Many studies have shown that moderate physical activity and supplementation of vitamins B2, D, coenzyme Q10 and magnesium has a positive effect on reducing duration and frequency of the migraine attack.

Introduction Sodium butyrate is an organic chemical compound belonging to sodium salts, which has the potential to be used in anticancer therapy. It reduces inflammation of the intestinal mucosa and promotes the development of beneficial intestinal flora, thanks to which it helps maintain homeostasis. Therefore, butyrate reduces the risk of developing colon cancer or reverses pathological changes occurring under the influence of this cancer. Scientific studies have also shown a beneficial effect of butyrate on the side effects of anticancer treatment - chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A proper diet also has a beneficial effect on the production of endogenous butyrate and reduces the risk of developing colon cancer. It is recommended to use a Mediterranean diet, rich in dietary fiber, highly unsaturated fatty acids and fresh vegetables and fruits. It is recommended to avoid highly processed products, rich in simple sugars and saturated fatty acids, and to limit the consumption of red meat. Materials and methods This article is based on the literature found in the PubMed and other scientific databases from the period of 1978-2023 with the use of key words such as “butyrate” “sodium butyrate” “colon cancer” “anticancer treatment” “intestinal microbiota” “Mediterranean diet” Conclusion Sodium butyrate is a potential substance that, through its properties, may support the treatment of colorectal cancer. Additionally, the use of an appropriate diet has a positive effect on the intestinal microflora, allowing the action of sodium butyrate and reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

Introduction: The field of Paralympic medicine examines the healthcare issues that are specific to athletes with disabilities. This article presents a historical phenomenon in which the introduction of further activities for patients with neurological conditions led to the hosting of the Paralympic Games. The article describes the complexity of inclusivity in disability health research and outlines the historical context of the emergence of this field of sports medicine. It also presents the main challenges posed by the developing parasport. One of the most significant issues is to guarantee that competition is conducted with the greatest degree of equity possible. This entails ensuring the precision of classification, preventing the over-medicalisation of athletes. It is also imperative that athletes with special requirements are provided with the appropriate support and equipment. The creation of adequate care pathways requires a challenging process, largely due to the inconclusive nature of research findings over the years. Further investigation is necessary to gain a more nuanced understanding of this relatively new area of study. Purpose of work: The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the broader challenges that paramedicine is facing in relation to the rapid development of this branch of sports medicine. Materials and methods: This article is based on the literature found in Pubmed database and other scientific databases. References were researched using following keywords: paralympic games, persons with disabilities, paramedicine, para-athletes, Conclusions: The advancement of Paralympic medicine is markedly expedited by a synthesis of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. The integration of these two approaches yields invaluable insights into the personal perspectives of athletes on their health, while also facilitating statistically significant, evidence-based results on the analysis of large groups of athletes.

Introduction Rhodiola rosea L. is an adaptogen with an international reach, widely used in modern medicine. Scientific studies indicate that extracts obtained from Rhodiola rosea L. have a beneficial effect on various pathological conditions, including circulatory system diseases, neurological disorders and metabolic ailments. The wide range of applications of these compounds, combined with potentially low toxicity, makes Rhodiola rosea L. a promising candidate for integration in therapies supporting the treatment of diseases affecting various body systems. The aim of this review is to analyze contemporary research on the potential properties of Rhodiola rosea L., as well as to establish the foundation for further research and development of preparations based on this plant. Materials and Methods The review was conducted by searching PubMed and other scientific databases focusing on currently available publications. The literature available in the PubMed database was reviewed using the following keywords: “rhodiola rosea”, “adaptogen”, "cardiovascular diseases”, “neurological diseases”, “diabetes”. The analysis of 45 articles published between 1998-2023 was used to write the paper.

Introduction: Dermatoses are a common problem among athletes due to exposure to various chemical substances, close skin contact with other individuals and higher risk of abrasions and skin trauma. Dermatoses affecting athletes may be divided to inflammatory, infectious and mechanical dermatoses. Due to various presentations, athletes should not neglect any lesions on their skin and should seek medical help. Physicians must remember about thorough examination including skin, to check if athletes can exercise and participate in sport events. Purpose of work: The aim of this article is to emphasize the association between dermatoses and sport activities, including the necessity of their proper diagnosis and treatment. Materials and methods: Articles in Pubmed database were researched using following keywords: dermatoses among athletes, sport dermatoses, infections among athletes, exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Conclusions: Skin diseases may affect athletes’ performance and require them to cease professional training and close contact with other athletes. Physicians must remember the necessity of an accurate diagnosis and prompt initiation of the treatment to avoid delay in practice, team training and competitions.

Endometriosis is common chronic condition that can cause acute and chronic pain. It affects 5-10 % of women in their reproductive years. It is characterized by the presence of endometrial- like tissue outside the uterus and it is associated with pelvic pain and infertility. Diagnosis of endometriosis requires laparotomy or laparoscopy. Therefore, there is often a delay from initial symptoms to diagnosis and treatment. There is no effective treatment. Current therapeutic methods aim to reduce pain and treat infertility. It include surgery, hormonal treatments and analgesics in case of a pain. Additionally, this methods have their limitations in form of side effects and unsatisfactory therapeutic effect. [1,2] Wherefore physical activity (PA) and exercise have been suggested as alternative treatments.[3] In this study authors perform a systematic review to evaluate the effect of PA and exercise on endometriosis-related symptoms.

Eating disorders are a significant health problem among athletes, affecting both physical performance and mental well-being. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the existing scientific literature on the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of eating disorders in athletes. By synthesizing the results of the research, this article aims to show the unique challenges that athletes face in terms of eating behavior and to propose directions for future research and intervention strategies.

Background Research has found that news media exposure may have both positive and negative consequences for well-being in times of crisis. However, the internal mechanisms underlying that relationship need further investigation. The pur-pose of the research presented in the paper was to explore the role of COVID-19 fear and worries and users’ gender in the relationship between news media exposure and life satisfaction. Participants and procedure Three hundred seventy-one media users aged 19 to 65 (M = 28.88, SD = 10.25) were surveyed with news media ex-posure, COVID-19 fear and worries, and life satisfaction scales. Correlation analyses and moderated mediation anal-yses were performed. Results The study demonstrated a significant positive association between news media exposure and life satisfaction, and an indirect effect of news exposure on life satisfaction via COVID-19 fear moderated by gender: elevated COVID-19 fear decreases the positive association between news exposure and life satisfaction, and this effect is stronger for women. Conclusions The present study expands our understanding of the role that news media can play in shaping the user’s well-being in a time of a health crisis. It demonstrates that the effects of exposure to news media during a crisis are twofold. On the one hand, the use of news media is associated with a more positive evaluation of one’s life, which may indicate that media use is a way to cope with a crisis. On the other hand, frequent use of news media leads to an elevated level of fear related to COVID-19, which, in turn, lowers the user’s well-being.

Background Given the stress that we feel in various parts of our lives, it seems important to concentrate on identifying inner resources that assist employees in coping with problems of the modern world and functioning better in it. This study evaluates two types of internal resources – the manner of approaching successes and failures (growth mindset) and self-efficacy – and their influence on life and job satisfaction. Both these resources are negatively related to the perceived stress; however, they have not been considered in a single study to date. Participants and procedure The aim was to examine the relation between growth mindset and life and job satisfaction with the mediatory role of per-ceived stress and self-efficacy among white-collar workers. The present study concerned 283 employees who completed self-report questionnaires. Results A substantial relationship was found between growth mindset and life and job satisfaction. However, when perceived stress was included in the model, the relation between these two variables became weaker but was still significant, which consti-tutes evidence of partial mediation. The relationship between focus on development and life and job satisfaction became statistically significant when self-efficacy was considered. Conclusions Shaping a growth mindset and strengthening self-efficacy can positively affect life and job satisfaction, especially in stressful situations.

High‐mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nucleoprotein with proinflammatory functions following cellular release during tissue damage. Moreover, antibody‐mediated HMGB1 neutralization alleviates lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced shock, suggesting a role for HMGB1 as a superordinate therapeutic target for inflammatory and infectious diseases. Recent genetic studies have indicated cell‐intrinsic functions of HMGB1 in phagocytes as critical elements of immune responses to infections, yet the role of extracellular HMGB1 signaling in this context remains elusive. We performed antibody‐mediated and genetic HMGB1 deletion studies accompanied by in vitro experiments to discern context‐dependent cellular sources and functions of extracellular HMGB1 during murine bloodstream infection with Listeria monocytogenes. Antibody‐mediated neutralization of extracellular HMGB1 favors bacterial dissemination and hepatic inflammation in mice. Hepatocyte HMGB1, a key driver of postnecrotic inflammation in the liver, does not affect Listeria‐induced inflammation or mortality. While we confirm that leukocyte HMGB1 deficiency effectuates disseminated listeriosis, we observed no evidence of dysfunctional autophagy, xenophagy, intracellular bacterial degradation, or inflammatory gene induction in primary HMGB1‐deficient phagocytes or altered immune responses to LPS administration. Instead, we demonstrate that mice devoid of leukocyte HMGB1 exhibit impaired hepatic recruitment of inflammatory monocytes early during listeriosis, resulting in alterations of the transcriptional hepatic immune response and insufficient control of bacterial dissemination. Bone marrow chimera indicate that HMGB1 from both liver‐resident and circulating immune cells contributes to effective pathogen control. Conclusion: Leukocyte‐derived extracellular HMGB1 is a critical cofactor in the immunologic control of bloodstream listeriosis. HMGB1 neutralization strategies preclude an efficient host immune response against Listeria.

Introduction The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between performing remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic and the level of job and life satisfaction, as well as the assumed, intermediary role of the level of perceived stress and such resources as self-efficacy and self-esteem. Material and methods The study, implemented with the use of an internet application, included 283 employees. Data were gathered using a job and life satisfaction scale, the Short Scale for Measuring General Self-Efficacy Beliefs, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Perceived Stress Scale PSS-4 and a demographic information form. Results The results showed the existence of a relationship between performing remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic and job and life satisfaction, and that the level of perceived stress, self-efficiency and self-esteem plays an intermediary role in this relationship. Remote working is associated with life and job satisfaction, and this relationship is mediated by levels of experienced stress, self-efficacy and self-esteem. Conclusions Findings indicate that remote working is associated with higher levels of job and work satisfaction. This relationship is mediated by levels of perceived stress, self-efficacy and self-esteem.

A memory effect is the ability to restore the original, lamellar layered double hydroxide structure. Herein, we have described 1) the changes in the structural and basic properties of ZnAl mixed oxides during their transformation into ZnAl-reconstructed LDHs (RE-LDHs); 2) the extraordinary properties of ZnAl RE-LDHs compared to the original ZnAl LDHs; and 3) the changes of basic properties during the interaction of ZnAl RE-LDHs with atmospheric CO2. Aldol condensation was selected as probe reaction to prove the catalytic potential of ZnAl RE-LDHs. We have described a target method for preparing ZnAl RE-LDHs with a large number of basic sites. ZnAl RE-LDHs possess significantly higher furfural conversion in the aldol condensation of furfural than MOs. The structural, textural, and basic properties of the studied materials were described by temperature-programmed analysis, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, temperature-programmed desorption of CO2, and in-situ diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

Novel carbon nanomaterials such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphene oxide (GO) can be easily incorporated into the undergraduate curriculum to discuss basic chemistry and nanotechnology concepts. This paper describes a laboratory experiment designed to study the differences between GO and rGO regarding their physicochemical properties (e.g., color, hydrophobicity, type of functional groups, electrical conductivity, etc.). In this course, students carry out the chemical reduction of GO using ascorbic acid, a mild and environmentally friendly reducing agent. The differences between GO and rGO can be spotted by the naked eye and can be further evaluated by spectroscopic methods, as Fourier transform infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Simple and applicable in all laboratories, use of the multimeter to measure resistance was proposed to reveal the different electrical properties of GO and rGO. Moreover, the proposed laboratory experiment is an ideal pretext to discuss the definition of graphene in the context of the overuse of this term in the literature.

Nursing is an independent medical profession, the essence of which is providing health services as well as teaching, conducting research, managing nurses and midwife teams, and working in other capacities related to health care. Nurses, in addition to taking care of their patients, have to also pay attention to their patients’ families, living and socio-economic conditions, work environment, their local community, as well as religion and cultural values. The aim of the article is to draw attention to a nurse’s responsibilities in working with people after a stroke within the context of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation model. The interdisciplinary model of care and rehabilitation of a patient after stroke requires close cooperation and interaction between different specialists, constant flow of information within the team, as well as providing consistent information to the patient. Ignorance of the type of work conducted by some members of the team members by others may undermine the effectiveness of rehabilitation. Comprehensive care and therapy carried out by an interdisciplinary team should aim towards mutual support and the work of each member should complement the actions taken by others.

Liver steatosis is a common health problem associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and an important risk factor for the development of liver fibrosis and cancer. Steatosis is caused by triglycerides (TG) accumulating in lipid droplets (LDs), cellular organelles composed of neutral lipids surrounded by a monolayer of phospholipids. The HCV nucleocapsid core localizes to the surface of LDs and induces steatosis in cultured cells and mouse livers by decreasing intracellular TG degradation (lipolysis). Here we report that core at the surface of LDs interferes with the activity of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), the key lipolytic enzyme in the first step of TG breakdown. Expressing core in livers or mouse embryonic fibroblasts of ATGL(-/-) mice no longer decreases TG degradation as observed in LDs from wild-type mice, supporting the model that core reduces lipolysis by engaging ATGL. Core must localize at LDs to inhibit lipolysis, as ex vivo TG hydrolysis is impaired in purified LDs coated with core but not when free core is added to LDs. Coimmunoprecipitation experiments revealed that core does not directly interact with the ATGL complex but, unexpectedly, increased the interaction between ATGL and its activator CGI-58 as well as the recruitment of both proteins to LDs. These data link the anti-lipolytic activity of the HCV core protein with altered ATGL binding to CGI-58 and the enhanced association of both proteins with LDs.

The study evaluated the influence of the tillage system no-till (RT), strip-till (ST-OP), conventional till on the stability and distribution of soil aggregates as well as the relation- ship between the size-classes of soil aggregates and the content and quality of organic matter. The soil was sampled in a field experiment from the depth of 0-10 and 10-20 cm. The analyses concerned determination of carbon and nitrogen content, humus fractions, and soil aggregate size distribution. The obtained fractions of aggregates were analyzed for total organic carbon and total nitrogen content and stability. The results demonstrated that, regardless of the cultivation method, the contribution of particular size-classes of aggregates in the analyzed Luvisol was similar – large macroaggregates (>2 mm) 43-49%, small macroaggregates (2-0.75 mm) 7-8%, and the fraction <0.75 mm 44-49%. The soil aggregates from the 0-10 cm layer of ST-OP and RT were characterized by higher total organic carbon content in comparison to conventional till. Reduced tillage is beneficial for creating more stable structures of soil aggregates, especially in the top soil lay- er. The stability of soil aggregates positively correlate with total organic carbon content in the soil and parameters describing soil fertility, organic matter stability, and carbon sequestration. Background High-mobility group box protein 1 [HMGB1] is a ubiquitous nucleoprotein with immune-regulatory properties following cellular secretion or release in sterile and in infectious inflammation. Stool and serum HMGB1 levels correlate with colitis severity and colorectal cancer [CRC] progression, yet recent reports indicate that HMGB1 mainly operates as an intracellular determinant of enterocyte fate during colitis, and investigations into the roles of HMGB1 in CRC are lacking. Methods Using mice with conditional HMGB1-knockout in enterocytes [ Hmgb1 ΔIEC] and myeloid cells [ Hmgb1 ΔLysM], respectively, we explored functions of HMGB1 in pathogenetically diverse contexts of colitis and colitis-associated CRC. Results HMGB1 is overexpressed in human inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal cancers, and HMGB1 protein localises in enterocytes and stromal cells in colitis and CRC specimens from humans and rodents. As previously described, enterocyte HMGB1 deficiency aggravates severe chemical-induced intestinal injury, but not Citrobacter rodentium or T cell transfer colitis in mice. HMGB1 - deficient enterocytes and organoids do not exhibit deviant apoptotic or autophagic activity, altered proliferative or migratory capacity, abnormal intestinal permeability, or aberrant DSS-induced organoid inflammation in vitro. Instead, we observed altered in vivo reprogramming of both intestinal epithelia and infiltrating myeloid cells in Hmgb1 ΔIEC early during colitis, suggesting HMGB1-mediated paracrine injury signalling. Hmgb1 ΔIEC had higher CRC burden than wild types in the Apc +/min model, whereas inflammatory CRC was attenuated in Hmgb1 ΔLysM. Cellular and molecular phenotyping of Hmgb1 ΔIEC and Hmgb1 ΔLysM cancers indicates context-dependent transcriptional modulation of immune signalling and extracellular matrix remodelling via HMGB1. Conclusion Enterocytes and myeloid cells context-dependently regulate host responses to severe colitis and maladaptive intestinal wound healing via HMGB1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Depressive disorders are a growing problem worldwide. They are also characterized by high comorbidity, including from the circle of dermatological diseases. Autoimmune diseases seem to be particularly correlated with depressive comorbidity, raising the question of their possible common pathomechanism. The PubMed database was searched, focusing on results published after 2016. A particular reciprocal correlation of depressive disorders with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, impetigo, lupus and systemic scleroderma was found. One possible explanation for the co-occurrence of the above diseases is that the inflammatory theory may be applicable to depression, the various elements of which also apply to autoimmune diseases. The quality of chilled and frozen African catfish fillets was compared. The experiment was performed on 20 individuals of Clarias gariepinus aged < 1 year, with estimated body weight of 1 kg. A total of 40 right and left fillets were subjected to pre-treatment. Chilled right fillets (20) and left fillets (20) stored for 8 months in the freezer were subjected to quantitative and qualitative laboratory analyses. Chilled African catfish fillets had a lower of moisture content, higher of total protein, fat and crude ash, and higher energy value than frozen samples. Chilled fillets had also higher water-holding capacity, lower cooking loss and higher tenderness.

The aim of this laboratory experiment is to utilize graphene oxide (GO) material to introduce undergraduate students to many well-known concepts of general chemistry. GO is a new nanomaterial that has generated worldwide interest and can be easily produced in every well-equipped undergraduate chemical laboratory. An in-depth examination of GO synthesis, as well as a study of its structure and properties, allows students to familiarize themselves with the concepts of redox reactions, dispersity, and polarity, along with the basic concepts of spectroscopic methods. The inclusion of this carbonaceous nanomaterial within a basic chemistry curriculum can stimulate students' interest and introduce them to the modern field of nanotechnology. Students are tasked to prepare GO using the well-known improved Hummers' method. Then they study the dispersion behavior of GO and carry out Fourier transform infrared and UV-vis spectroscopic measurements to characterize the material. The experiments are designed to be accomplished in five 3-h sessions and have been successfully incorporated into the second-year undergraduate course at Gdan´sk University of Technology over a three-year period.

Subject and purpose of work: The subject of the study is to show that the method of managing a municipality, taking into account the marketing philosophy, creates additional values for a given municipality. The purpose of the work is to show that Dobra Szczecińska Municipality, being a territorial unit, has developed a certain manner of managing and directing local resources, which, using territorial marketing, has created a unique and inimitable character of the location. Materials and methods: Scientific literature, source materials from the Municipal Office of Dobra Szczecińska as well as all statistics and studies available online were used. Literature review and analysis, as well as deductive and inductive methods were applied as research tools. Results: It has been proved that Dobra Szczecińska is a municipality with its own identity, possesses its own unique image, cares about the municipality’s product and satisfies the needs of its residents and entrepreneurs. Conclusions: The municipality was justifiably ranked 23rd in the 2016 Ranking, because the local authorities make every effort to ensure that the residents and entrepreneurs believe that they live and operate in the best place in West Pomeranian Province. The analysis of the collected material confirmed that Dobra Szczecińska municipality is rightly called a good one because it develops in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
