We report a comprehensive study on the origin of the enigmatic disordered ground state within the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, BaCe$_2$ZnS$_5$, at low temperatures. The magnetization and heat capacity data show a lack of magnetic ordering down to 73 mK. We deploy a localized spin dimer model which can accurately reproduce the dynamic structure factor of the neutron data, magnetization and heat capacity data. Remarkably, the intra-dimer exchange interaction shows strong XY-type anisotropy and the ground state of BaCe$_2$ZnS$_5$ is in an entangled state $(|\uparrow\uparrow> - |\downarrow\downarrow>)/\sqrt{2}$. This is in contrast to the singlet dimer state that is obtained for Heisenberg interactions. These results confirm that BaCe$_2$ZnS$_5$ is in a quantum paramagnet state consisting of entangled spin dimer states.

Since the initial discovery of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials, significant effort has been made to incorporate the three properties of magnetism, band structure topology, and strong electron correlations $-$ to leverage emergent quantum phenomena and expand their potential applications. However, the discovery of a single vdW material that intrinsically hosts all three ingredients has remained an outstanding challenge. Here we report the discovery of a Kondo-interacting topological antiferromagnet in the vdW 5$f$ electron system UOTe. It has a high antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature of 150 K, with a unique AFM configuration that breaks the combined parity and time reversal ($PT$) symmetry in an even number of layers while maintaining zero net magnetic moment. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal Dirac bands near the Fermi level, which combined with our theoretical calculations demonstrate UOTe as an AFM Dirac semimetal. Within the AFM order, we observed the presence of the Kondo interaction, as evidenced by the emergence of a 5$f$ flat band near the Fermi level below 100 K and hybridization between the Kondo band and the Dirac band. We describe the doping effects on a metallic breathing pyrochlore compound, Cr4PtGa17. Upon doping with Sb, i.e., Cr4Pt(Ga1-xSbx)17, it was found that a selective doping on one of the seven Ga sites occurs. With increasing dopant level, the ferromagnetism in the parent compound is gradually suppressed, along with a decrease in fitted Curie-Weiss temperature (from 61 (1) K to -1.8 (1) K) and effective moment (from ~2.26 muB/f.u. to ~0.68 muB/f.u.). Low-temperature heat capacity measurements confirm the absence of magnetic ordering above 0.4 K for the three most doped samples. Meanwhile, electrical resistivity measurements display a metal-semiconductor transition with increasing Sb contents, which is attributed to an increase of Fermi energy based on the calculations of electronic band structure and density of states. Moreover, we have speculated that the ferromagnetism in Cr4PtGa17 is governed by itinerant electrons according to our observations. This study of Sb-doping effect on Cr4PtGa17 provides deeper understanding of magnetism of this system and possibilities for future modifications., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables

Functionalities of solid-state materials are usually considered to be dependent on their crystal structures. The limited structural types observed in the emerged high-entropy oxides put constraints on exploration of their physical properties and potential applications. Herein, we synthesized the first high-entropy oxide in a trirutile structure, (Mn$_{0.2}$Fe$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$)Ta$_{1.92}$O$_{6-\delta}$, and investigated its magnetism. The phase purity and high-entropy nature were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated divalent Mn, Co, Ni and Cu along with trivalent Fe. Magnetic properties measurements showed antiferromagnetic coupling and potential short-range magnetic ordering below ~ 4 K. The temperature-dependent heat capacity data measured under zero and high magnetic field confirmed the lack of long-range magnetic ordering and a possible low-temperature phonon excitation. The discovery of the first trirutile high-entropy oxide opens a new way for studying the relationship between the highly disordered atomic arrangement and their magnetic interaction. Single crystals of U$_2$Mn$_3$Ge and and U$_2$Fe$_3$Ge with a Kagome lattice structure were synthesized using a high-temperature self-flux crystal growth method. The physical properties of these crystals were characterized through measurements of resistivity, magnetism, and specific heat. U$_2$Fe$_3$Ge exhibits ferromagnetic ground state and Anomalous Hall Effect, and U$_2$Mn$_3$Ge demonstrates a complex magnetic structure. Both compounds exhibit large Sommerfeld coefficient, indicating coexistence of heavy Fermion behavior with magnetism. Our results suggest that this U$_2$TM$_3$Ge (TM = Mn, Fe, Co) family is a promising platform to investigate the interplay of magnetism, Kondo physics and the Kagome lattice., Comment: Accepted to Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

Kondo lattice systems are recognized for potentially hosting a variety of rich topological phases. Several pioneering studies have demonstrated significant anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst effects in these systems, attributed to the Berry curvature of the hybridization bands. In this study, we investigate UBiTe, a ferromagnetic Kondo lattice system. Our findings reveal that the intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity is closely tied to the Kondo coherence temperature. Moreover, we demonstrate that slight shifts in the Fermi level across three different samples significantly influence this intrinsic contribution, in alignment with the Berry curvature localized within the narrow hybridization bands. This provides a stark contrast to the less pronounced sensitivity observed in weakly correlated Weyl semimetals, underscoring the distinctive electronic properties of Kondo lattice systems. The anomalous Hall conductivity of one samples ranks among the highest reported for topological magnetic materials.

We investigated the effect of Ni doping in a recently proposed quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate Li$_4$CuTeO$_6$. We performed a comprehensive study on the structural and magnetic properties. We find that the anti-site disorder between Li$^+$ and Cu$^{2+}$ persists until 50\% Ni doping in which Ni and Cu occupy different crystallographic sites. As a result, while Cu sits in both triangular and honeycomb layers in Li$_4$CuTeO$_6$, Ni forms only honeycomb layer in Li$_4$NiTeO$_6$ and Li$_4$Cu$_{0.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$TeO$_6$. Our magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the Weiss temperature decreases from -145.68 K in Li$_4$CuTeO$_6$ to -6.15 K in Li$_4$NiTeO$_6$ as Ni doping increases, and find no hint of magnetic ordering or freezing down to 1.8 K. One-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials have emerged as an intriguing playground to explore novel electronic and optical effects. We report on inorganic one-dimensional SbPS4 nanotubes bundles obtained via mechanical exfoliation from bulk crystals. The ability to mechanically exfoliate SbPS4 nanobundles offers the possibility of applying modern 2D material fabrication techniques to create mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. We find that SbPS4 can readily be exfoliated to yield long (> 10 {\mu}m) nanobundles with thicknesses that range from of 1.3 - 200 nm. We investigated the optical response of semiconducting SbPS4 nanobundles and discovered that upon excitation with blue light, they emit bright and ultra-broadband red light with a quantum yield similar to that of hBN-encapsulated MoSe2. We discovered that the ultra-broadband red light emission is a result of a large ~1 eV exciton binding energy and a ~200 meV exciton self-trapping energy, unprecedented in previous material studies. Due to the bright and ultra-broadband light emission, we believe that this class of inorganic 1D van der Waals semiconductors has numerous potential applications including on-chip tunable nanolasers, and applications that require ultra-violet to visible light conversion such as lighting and sensing. Overall, our findings open avenues for harnessing the unique characteristics of these nanomaterials, advancing both fundamental research and practical optoelectronic applications.

Engineering surfaces and interfaces of materials promises great potential in the field of heterostructures and quantum matter designer, with the opportunity of driving new many-body phases that are absent in the bulk compounds. Here, we focus on the magnetic Weyl kagome system Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and show how for different sample's terminations the Weyl-points connect also differently, still preserving the bulk-boundary correspondence. Scanning-tunnelling microscopy has suggested such a scenario indirectly. Here, we demonstrate this directly for the fermiology of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, by linking it to the system real space surfaces distribution. By a combination of micro-ARPES and first-principles calculations, we measure the energy-momentum spectra and the Fermi surfaces of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ for different surface terminations and show the existence of topological features directly depending on the top-layer electronic environment. Our work helps to define a route to control bulk-derived topological properties by means of surface electrostatic potentials, creating a realistic and reliable methodology to use Weyl kagome metals in responsive magnetic spintronics.

Permanent magnets are of great importance due to their vast applications. MnBi has been proposed to be a potential permanent magnet that can be widely used while past efforts have been focused on optimizing the ferromagnetic low-temperature phase of MnBi. Herein, we report a series of new materials, CuxMn1-xBi, crystallizing in a quenched high-temperature-phase (QHTP) MnBi-related structure. We synthesized single crystals of CuxMn1-xBi and found that they crystallize in an unreported trigonal structure (P -31c). Magnetic properties measurements imply high-temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering and low-temperature ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic (FM/FiM) ordering. By analyzing the doping effect on crystal structure and magnetic properties, we established a magnetic phase diagram for Cu-doped MnBi and attributed the AFM and FM/FiM to two different atomic sites of Mn., Comment: 37 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables

Topological insulators are characterized by spin-momentum-locked massless surface states which are robust under various perturbations. Manipulating such surface states is a topic of vigorous research, as a possible route for the realization of emergent many-body physics in topological systems. Thus far, time-reversal symmetry breaking via Coulomb and magnetic perturbations has been a dominant approach for the tuning of topological states. However, the effect of the structural degrees of freedom on quasi-particle dynamics in topological materials remains elusive. In this work, we demonstrate a transition in HfTe5 between distinct topological phases as a function of either Te vacancy concentration or applied strain; these phases are characterized theoretically as a transition from strong to weak topological insulator and experimentally by a transition from sharp surface states and Dirac crossing to a Fermi-liquid-like quasiparticle state in which these surface-localized features are heavily suppressed. Although vacancies can result in various consequences such as scattering, doping, and structural distortions, we show that changes in the lattice constants play the foremost role in determining the electronic structure, self-energy, and topological states of HfTe5. Our results demonstrate the possibility of using both defect chemistry and strain as control parameters for topological phase transitions and associated many-body physics.

Single crystals of a new layered compound, Cr1.21Te2, was synthesized via a vapor transport method. The crystal structure and physical properties were characterized by single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, zero-field heat capacity and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Cr1.21Te2, containing two Cr sites, crystalizes in a trigonal structure with a space group P-3 (No. 147). The Cr site in the interstitial layer is partially occupied. Physical property characterizations indicate that Cr1.21Te2 is metallic with hole pockets at the Fermi energy and undergoes a ferromagnetic phase transition at ~173 K. The magnetic moments align along the c-axis in the ferromagnetic state. Based on low temperature magnetization, the spin stiffness constant D and spin excitation gap $\Delta$ were estimated according to Bloch's law to be D = 99 $\pm$ 24 meV $\r{A}^2$ and $\Delta$ = 0.46 $\pm$ 0.33 meV, suggesting its possible application as a low dimensional ferromagnet., Comment: 6 figures

The interaction between strong correlation and Berry curvature is an open territory of in the field of quantum materials. Here we report large anomalous Hall conductivity in a Kondo lattice ferromagnet USbTe which is dominated by intrinsic Berry curvature at low temperatures. However, the Berry curvature induced anomalous Hall effect does not follow the scaling relation derived from Fermi liquid theory. The onset of the Berry curvature contribution coincides with the Kondo coherent temperature. Combined with ARPES measurement and DMFT calculations, this strongly indicates that Berry curvature is hosted by the flat bands induced by Kondo hybridization at the Fermi level. Our results demonstrate that the Kondo coherence of the flat bands has a dramatic influence on the low temperature physical properties associated with the Berry curvature, calling for new theories of scaling relations of anomalous Hall effect to account for the interaction between strong correlation and Berry curvature., Comment: Accepted by Nature Communications

We report the growth and characterization of MnPd$_5$P, a ferromagnet with T$_C$ $\approx$ 295 K, and conduct a substitutional study with its antiferromagnetic analogue MnPt$_5$P. We grow single crystals of MnPd$_5$P and Mn(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_5$P by adding Mn into (Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$)-P based melts. All compounds in the family adopt the layered anti-CeCoIn$_5$ structure with space group P4/mmm, and EDS and XRD results indicate that MnPt$_5$P and MnPd$_5$P form a solid solution. Based on magnetization and resistance data, we construct a T-x phase diagram for Mn(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_5$P and demonstrate the antiferromagnetic order found in MnPt$_5$P is extraordinarily sensitive to Pd substitution. At low Pd fractions (x $<$ 0.010), the single antiferromagnetic transition in pure MnPt$_5$P splits into a higher temperature ferromagnetic transition followed on cooling by a lower temperature ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition and then by a re-entrant antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at lower temperatures. The antiferromagnetic region makes up a bubble that persists to x $\approx$ 0.009 for T $\approx$ 150 K, with all samples x $<$ 0.009 recovering their initial ferromagnetic state with further cooling to base temperature. Over the same low x range we find a non-monotonic change in the room temperature unit cell volume, further suggesting that pure MnPt$_5$P is close to an instability. Once x $>$ 0.010, Mn(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_5$P undergoes a single ferromagnetic transition. The Curie temperature increases rapidly with x, rising from T$_C$ $\approx$ 197 K at x = 0.013 to a maximum of T$_C$ $\approx$ 312 K for x $\approx$ 0.62, and then falls back to T$_C$ $\approx$ 295 K for pure MnPd$_5$P (x = 1). Given that Pt and Pd are isoelectronic, this work raises questions as to the origin of the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic ground state in MnPt$_5$P upon introducing Pd.

Single crystals of a Shastry-Sutherland magnetic semiconductor, BaNd2ZnS5, were synthesized through a high-temperature solution growth technique. Physical properties were characterized by powder and single crystal x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. BaNd2ZnS5 orders antiferromagnetically at 2.9 K, with magnetic moments primarily aligned within the ab-plane. Magnetic isothermal measurements show metamagnetic transitions at ~ 15 kOe for the [110] direction and ~ 21 kOe for the [100] direction. Estimated magnetic entropy suggests a double ground state for each Nd ion., Comment: 5 figures

A 2-Q antiferromagnetic order of the ferromagnetic dimers was found below TN = 2.9 K in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice BaNd2ZnS5 by single crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic order can be understood by the orthogonal arrangement of local Ising Nd spins, identified by polarized neutrons. A field was applied along [1 -1 0] to probe the observed metamagnetic transition in the magnetization measurement. The field decouples two magnetic sublattices corresponding to the propagation vectors q1= (0.5, 0.5, 0) and q2= (-0.5, 0.5, 0), respectively. Each sublattice shows a stripe order with a Neel-type arrangement in each single layer. The stripe order with q1 remains nearly intact up to 6 T, while the other one with q2 is suppressed at a critical field Hc ~1.7 T, indicating a partial disorder. The Hc varies with temperature and is manifested in the H-T phase diagram constructed by measuring the magnetization in BaNd2ZnS5., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

Layered ferromagnets are thrilling materials from both a fundamental and technological point of view. VI3 is an interesting example, with a complex magnetism that differentiates it from the first reported Cr based layered ferromagnets. Here, we show in an indirect way through Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, the importance of spin-orbit coupling setting the electronic properties of this material. Our light polarized photoemission measurements point to a ground state with a half-filled e'_+- doublet, where a gap opening is triggered by spin-orbit coupling enhanced by electronic correlations.

We report the magnetic changes from canted antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic orderings in anti-115-type MnPt$_{5-x}$Pd$_x$P ($x$ = 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5) and the discovery of a new rare-earth-free ferromagnet, MnPd$_5$P by both theoretical prediction and experimental investigation. The family compounds were synthesized using high temperature solid state method and characterized to crystalize in the anti-CeCoIn$_5$ type with the space group P4/mmm exhibiting a two-dimensional layered structural feature. The magnetic property measurements indicate that the compounds ordered from canted A-type antiferromagnet in MnPt$_5$P to ferromagnet above the room temperature with varying degrees of coercivity and magnetic moments in MnPd$_5$P by reducing the spin orbital coupling. The results of the MnPt$_{5-x}$Pd$_x$P have been analyzed in comparison to the other candidates of the 151 family of Mn(Pt/Pd)$_5$(P/As) to understand the complex structure-magnetism relationships.

Low temperature magnetization of CrI3, CrSiTe3 and CrGeTe3 single crystals were systematically studied. Based on the temperature dependence of extrapolated spontaneous magnetization from magnetic isotherms measured at different temperatures, the spin stiffness constant (D) and spin excitation gap ($\Delta$) were extracted according to Bloch's law. For spin stiffness, D is estimated to be 27${\pm}$6 meV $\r{A}^2$, 20${\pm}$3 meV $\r{A}^2$ and 38${\pm}$7 meV $\r{A}^2$ for CrI3, CrSiTe3 and CrGeTe3 respectively. Spin excitation gaps determined via Bloch's formulation have larger error bars yielding 0.59${\pm}$0.34 meV (CrI3), 0.37${\pm}$0.22 meV (CrSiTe3) and 0.28${\pm}$0.19 meV (CrGeTe3). Among all three studied compounds, larger spin stiffness value leads to higher ferromagnetic transition temperature., Comment: 5 figures

Single crystals of monoclinic La$_{5}$Co$_{2}$Ge$_{3}$ were grown using a self-flux method and were characterized by room-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, anisotropic temperature and field dependent magnetization, temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, and muon spin rotation. La$_{5}$Co$_{2}$Ge$_{3}$ has a Curie temperature ($T_\mathrm{C}$) of 3.8~K and clear signatures of ferromagnetism in magnetization and $\mu SR$ data, as well as a clear loss of spin disorder scattering in resistivity data and a sharp specific heat anomaly. The magnetism associated with La$_{5}$Co$_{2}$Ge$_{3}$ is itinerant, has a change in the entropy at $T_\mathrm {C}$ of $\simeq$0.05 R ln2 per mol-Co, and has a low-field saturated moment of $\sim 0.1 \mu_\mathrm B$/Co, making it a rare, itinerant, small moment, low $T_\mathrm C$ compound.

We present a combined study of zero-field $^{51}$V and $^{127}$I NMR at ambient pressure and specific heat and magnetization measurements under pressure up to 2.08 GPa on bulk single crystals of the van-der-Waals ferromagnet VI$_3$. At ambient pressure, our results consistently demonstrate that VI$_3$ undergoes a structural transition at $T_s \approx $78 K, followed by two subsequent ferromagnetic transitions at $T_{FM1} \approx $50 K and $T_{FM2} \approx $36 K upon cooling. At lowest temperature ($T < T_{FM2}$), two magnetically-ordered V sites exist, whereas only one magnetically-ordered V site is observed for $T_{FM1} < T\,< T_{FM2}$. Whereas $T_{FM1}$ is almost unaffected by external pressure, $T_{FM2}$ is highly responsive to pressure and merges with the $T_{FM1}$ line at $p \approx 0.6 $GPa. At even higher pressures ($p \approx $1.25\,GPa), the $T_{FM2}$ line merges with the structural transition at $T_s$ which becomes moderately suppressed with $p$ for $p < 1.25$ GPa. The change of a material's electrical resistance (R) in response to an external magnetic field (B) provides subtle information for the characterization of its electronic properties and has found applications in sensor and storage related technologies. In good metals, Boltzmann's theory predicts a quadratic growth in magnetoresistance (MR) at low B, and saturation at high fields. On the other hand, a number of nonmagnetic materials with weak electronic correlation and low carrier concentration for metallicity, such as inhomogeneous conductors, semimetals, narrow gap semiconductors and topological insulators, two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) show positive, non-saturating linear magnetoresistance (LMR). However, observation of LMR in single crystals of a good metal is rare. Here we present low-temperature, angle dependent magnetotransport in single crystals of the antiferromagnetic metal, TmB4. We observe large, positive and anisotropic MR(B), which can be tuned from quadratic to linear by changing the direction of the applied field. In view of the fact that isotropic, single crystalline metals with large Fermi surface (FS) are not expected to exhibit LMR, we attribute our observations to the anisotropic FS topology of TmB4. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for next-generation electronic devices. In this regime, insulating 2D ferromagnets, which remain rare, are of special importance due to their potential for enabling new device architectures. Here we report the discovery of ferromagnetism in a layered van der Waals semiconductor, VI3, which is based on honeycomb vanadium layers separated by an iodine-iodine van der Waals gap. It has a BiI3-type structure (R-3, No.148) at room temperature, and our experimental evidence suggests that it may undergo a subtle structural phase transition at 78 K. VI3 becomes ferromagnetic at 49 K, below which magneto-optical Kerr effect imaging clearly shows ferromagnetic domains, which can be manipulated by the applied external magnetic field. The optical band gap determined by reflectance measurements is 0.6 eV, and the material is highly resistive.

The 1/8 fractional plateau phase (1/8-FPP) in Shastry-Sutherland Lattice (SSL) spin systems has been viewed an exemplar of emergence on an Archimedean lattice. Here we explore this phase in the Ising magnet TmB4 using high-resolution specific heat (C) and magnetization (M) in the field-temperature plane. We show that the 1/8-FPP is smoothly connected to the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase on ramping the field from H= 0. Thus, the 1/8-FPP is not a distinct ground state of TmB4. Ba4NbMn3O12 is reported, synthesized by a solid state method in air. The crystal structure, determined by performing refinements on room temperature powder X-ray diffraction data by the Rietveld method, consists of Mn3O12 trimers in the configuration of three face-sharing MnO6 octahedra, with the trimers arranged in triangular planes. An effective moment of 4.82 {\mu}B/f.u is observed and competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions between Mn ions are inferred from the Weiss temperature of -4 K and the ferrimagnetic ordering transition of approximately 42 K. Ba4NbMn3O12 is a semiconductor with a transport activation energy of 0.37 eV., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

We present the electrical resistivity data under application of pressures up to $\sim$ 26 GPa and down to 50 mK temperatures on YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$. We find a pressure induced magnetic phase transition with an onset at $p_c$=18.2$\pm$0.8 GPa. At ambient pressure, YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ manifests a heavy fermion, nonmagnetic ground state and the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. As pressure is increased, the power law exponent in resistivity, $n$, deviates significantly from Fermi liquid behavior and tends to saturate with $n$ = 1 near $p_c$. A pronounced resistivity maximum, $T_\text{max}$, which scales with Kondo temperature is observed. $T_\text{max}$ decreases with increasing pressure and flattened out near $p_c$ indicating the suppression of Kondo exchange interaction. For $p>p_c$, $T_\text{max}$ shows a sudden upward shift, most likely becoming associated with crystal electric field scattering. Application of magnetic field for $p>p_c$ broadens the transition and shifts it toward the higher temperature, which is a typical behavior of the ferromagnetic transition. The magnetic transition appears to abruptly develop above $p_c$, suggesting probable first-order (with changing pressure) nature of the transition; once stabilized, the ordering temperature does not depend on pressure up to $\sim$ 26 GPa. Taken as a whole, these data suggest that YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ has a quantum phase transition at $p_c$ = 18.2 GPa associated with the avoided quantum criticality in metallic ferromagnets.

We describe three previously unreported superconductors, BaPb3, Ba0.89Sr0.11Pb3 and Ba0.5Sr0.5Pb3. These three materials, together with SrPb3, form a distinctive isoelectronic family of intermetallic superconductors based on the stacking of Pb planes, with crystal structures that display a hexagonal to cubic perovskite-like progression, as rarely seen in metals. The superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) are similar for all - 2.2 K for BaPb3, 2.7 K for Ba0.89Sr0.11Pb3 and 2.6 K for Ba0.5Sr0.5Pb3, and the previously reported Tc of SrPb3, ~ 2 K, is confirmed. The materials are moderate coupling superconductors, and calculations show that the electronic densities of states at the Fermi energy are primarily contributed by Pb. The observations suggest that the Pb-stacking variation has only a minor effect on the superconductivity., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

The crystal structure of Ba4NbRu3O12 is based on triangular planes of elongated Ru3O12 trimers oriented perpendicular to the plane. We report that it is semiconducting, that its Weiss temperature and effective magnetic moment are -155 K and 2.59 {\mu}B/f.u. respectively, and that magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data indicate that it exhibits magnetic ordering near 4 K. The presence of a high density of low energy states is evidenced by a substantial Sommerfeld-like T-linear term (gamma = 31(2) mJ/mole-K^2) in the specific heat. Electronic structure calculations reveal that the electronic states at the Fermi Energy reside on the Ru3O12 trimers and that the calculated density of electronic states is high and continuous around the Fermi Energy - in other words density functional theory calculates the material to be a metal. Our results imply that Ba4NbRu3O12 is a geometrically frustrated trimer-based Mott insulator., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures "to be published in Physical Review Materials"

Previously known to form only under high pressure synthetic conditions, here we report that the T'-type 214-structure cuprate based on the rare earth atom Tb is stabilized for ambient pressure synthesis through partial substitution of Pd for Cu. The new material is obtained in purest form for mixtures of nominal composition $Tb_{1.96}Cu_{0.80}Pd_{0.20}O_{4}$. The refined formula, in orthorhombic space group Pbca, with a = 5.5117(1) {\AA}, b = 5.5088(1) {\AA}, and c = 11.8818(1) {\AA}, is $Tb_{2}Cu_{0.83}Pd_{0.17}O_{4}$. An incommensurate structural modulation is seen along the a axis by electron diffraction and high resolution imaging. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal long range antiferromagnetic ordering at 7.9 K, with a less pronounced feature at 95 K; a magnetic moment reorientation transition is observed to onset at a field of approximately 1.1 Tesla at 3 K. Nodal-line semimetals (NLSs) represent a new type of topological semimetallic beyond Weyl and Dirac semimetals in the sense that they host closed loops or open curves of band degeneracies in the Brillouin zone. Parallel to the classification of type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals, there are two types of NLSs. The conventional NLS phase, in which the two bands forming the nodal line have opposite signs for their slopes along any direction perpendicular to the nodal line, has been proposed and realized in many compounds, whereas the exotic type-II NLS is very rare. Our first-principles calculations show that Mg$_3$Bi$_2$ is a material candidate that hosts a single type-II nodal loop around $\Gamma$. The band crossing is close to the Fermi level and the two crossing bands have the same sign in their slopes along the radial direction of the loop, indicating the type-II nature of the nodal line. Spin-orbit coupling generates only a small energy gap ($\sim$35 meV) at the nodal points and does not negate the band dispersion of Mg$_3$Bi$_2$ that yields the type-II nodal line. Based on this prediction we have synthesized Mg$_3$Bi$_2$ single crystals and confirmed the presence of the type-II nodal lines in the material. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements agree well with our first-principles results and thus establish Mg$_3$Bi$_2$ as an ideal materials platform for studying the exotic properties of type-II nodal line semimetals.

Single crystals of CrSbSe$_3$, a structurally pseudo-one-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor, were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by x-ray diffraction, anisotropic, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, temperature-dependent resistivity and optical absorption measurements. A band gap of 0.7 eV was determined from both resistivity and optical measurements. At high temperatures, CrSbSe$_3$ is paramagnetic and isotropic with a Curie-Weiss temperature of $\sim$145 K and an effective moment of $\sim$4.1 $\mu_B$/Cr. A ferromagnetic transition occurs at $T_c$ = 71 K. The $a$-axis, perpendicular to the chains in the structure, is the magnetic easy axis, while the chain axis direction, along $b$, is the hard axis. Magnetic isotherms measured around $T_c$ do not follow the behavior predicted by simple mean field critical exponents for a second order phase transition. A tentative set of critical exponents is estimated based on a modified Arrott plot analysis, giving $\beta\sim$0.25, $\gamma\sim$1.38 and $\delta\sim$6.6., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

The crystal growth, structure, and basic magnetic properties of TmMgGaO4 are reported. The Tm ions are located in a planar triangular lattice consisting of distorted TmO6 octahedra, while the Mg and Ga atoms randomly occupy intermediary bilayers of M-O triangular bipyramids. The Tm ions are positionally disordered. The material displays an antiferromagnetic Curie Weiss theta of ~ -20 -25 K, with no clear ordering visible in the magnetic susceptibility down to 1.8 K; the structure and magnetic properties suggest that ordering of the magnetic moments is frustrated by both structural disorder and the triangular magnetic motif. Single crystal magnetization measurements indicate that the magnetic properties are highly anisotropic, with large moments measured perpendicular to the triangular planes. At 2 K, a broad step-like feature is seen in the field-dependent magnetization perpendicular to the plane on applied field near 2 Tesla., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, supplementary info

We show that the previously unreported ternary $\sigma$-phase material Nb$_{20.4}$Ru$_{5.7}$Ge$_{3.9}$ is a superconductor with a critical temperature of 2.2 K. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, resistance, and specific heat measurements were used to characterize the superconducting transition. The Sommerfeld constant $\gamma$ for Nb$_{20.4}$Ru$_{5.7}$Ge$_{3.9}$ is 91 mJ mol-f.u.$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ and the specific heat anomaly at the superconducting transition, $\Delta$C/$\gamma$T$_c$, is approximately 1.38. The zero-temperature upper critical field ($\mu_0$H$_{c2}$(0)) was estimated to be 2 T by resistance data. Field-dependent magnetization data analysis estimated $\mu_0$H$_{c1}$(0) to be 5.5 mT. Thus, the characterization shows Nb$_{20.4}$Ru$_{5.7}$Ge$_{3.9}$ to be a type II BCS superconductor. This material appears to be the first reported ternary phase in the Nb-Ru-Ge system, and the fact that there are no previously reported binary Nb-Ru, Nb-Ge, or Ru-Ge $\sigma$-phases shows that all three elements are necessary to stabilize the material. A $\sigma$-phase in the Ta-Ru-Ge system was synthesized but did not display superconductivity above 1.7 K, which suggests that electron count cannot govern the superconductivity observed. A new series of cubic double perovskites Ba$_2R_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ ($R$ = Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm-Lu) was synthesized via solid state reaction. The $R^{3+}$ and Te$^{6+}$ ions are ordered on alternating octahedral sites, with the rare earth sites 2/3 occupied to balance the charge. The lattice parameters decrease monotonically from a = 8.5533(3) {\AA} for Ba$_2$La$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ to a = 8.3310(4) {\AA} for Ba$_2$Lu$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$. The lattice parameter for $R$ = Y is close to that of Ho. Analysis of the resulting bond lengths indicates a structural relaxation around the $R$ ion site. Ba$_2$La$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$, Ba$_2$Y$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$Lu$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ show primarily temperature-independent magnetic susceptibility due to the lack of a local rare earth moment. For Ba$_2$Sm$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$Eu$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$, the susceptibilities are influenced by Van Vleck-like contributions from excited state multiplets. For the remaining members, the Curie-Weiss law is followed with low-temperature deviations that can be associated with various degrees of crystalline electric field splitting. No magnetic ordering was observed down to 1.8 K in any of the compounds., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

We report the growth, structure and characterization of BaZnGa, identifying it as the sole known ternary compound in the Ba-Zn-Ga system. Single crystals of BaZnGa can be grown out of excess Ba-Zn and adopt a tI36 structure type. There are three unique Ba sites and three M\,=\,Zn/Ga sites. Using DFT calculations we can argue that whereas one of these three M sites is probably solely occupied by Ga, the other two M sites, most likely, have mixed Zn/Ga occupancy. Temperature dependent resistivity and magnetization measurements suggest that BaZnGa is a poor metal with no electronic or magnetic phase transitions between 2\,K and 300\,K.

The growth and characterization of CePtIn4, stabilized by 10% Zn substitution for In, is reported. The new material is orthorhombic, space group Cmcm (No. 63), with lattice parameters a = 4.51751(4) {\AA}, b = 16.7570(2) {\AA}, and c = 7.36682(8) {\AA}, and the refined crystal composition has 10% of Zn substituted for In, i.e. the crystals are CePt(In3.6Zn0.1)4. Crystals were grown using a self-flux method: only growths containing Zn yielded CePtIn4 crystals, while Ce3Pt4In13 crystals formed when Zn was not present. Anisotropic temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities for single crystals show that Zn-stabilized CePtIn4 orders magnetically at ~1.9 K. High-temperature Curie-Weiss fits indicate an effective moment of ~2.30 muB/ Ce and a directionally averaged Weiss-temperature of approximately - 9 K. Specific heat data shows a peak consistent with the ordering temperature seen in the magnetic susceptibility data. Zn-stabilized CePtIn4 is metallic and displays no superconducting transition down to 0.14 K., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We use high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and electronic structure calculations to study the electronic properties of rare-earth monoantimonides RSb (R = Y, Ce, Gd, Dy, Ho, Tm, Lu). The experimentally measured Fermi surface (FS) of RSb consists of at least two concentric hole pockets at the $\Gamma$ point and two intersecting electron pockets at the $X$ point. These data agree relatively well with the electronic structure calculations. Detailed photon energy dependence measurements using both synchrotron and laser ARPES systems indicate that there is at least one Fermi surface sheet with strong three-dimensionality centered at the $\Gamma$ point. Due to the "lanthanide contraction", the unit cell of different rare-earth monoantimonides shrinks when changing rare-earth ion from CeSb to LuSb. This results in the differences in the chemical potentials in these compounds, which is demonstrated by both ARPES measurements and electronic structure calculations. Interestingly, in CeSb, the intersecting electron pockets at the $X$ point seem to be touching the valence bands, forming a four-fold degenerate Dirac-like feature. On the other hand, the remaining rare-earth monoantimonides show significant gaps between the upper and lower bands at the $X$ point. Furthermore, similar to the previously reported results of LaBi, a Dirac-like structure was observed at the $\Gamma$ point in YSb, CeSb, and GdSb, compounds showing relatively high magnetoresistance. This Dirac-like structure may contribute to the unusually large magnetoresistance in these compounds., Comment: 8 figures

We report the temperature-pressure phase diagram of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ established using high pressure electrical resistivity, magnetization and high energy x-ray diffraction measurements up to 6 GPa. With increasing pressure, both resistivity and magnetization data show that the bulk superconducting transition of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is suppressed and then disappears at $p$ $\gtrsim$ 4 GPa. High pressure x-ray data clearly indicate a phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ under pressure that coincides with the abrupt loss of bulk superconductivity near 4 GPa. The x-ray data, combined with resistivity data, indicate that the collapsed tetragonal transition line is essentially vertical, occuring at 4.0(5) GPa for temperatures below 150 K. Band structure calculations also find a sudden transition to a collapsed tetragonal state near 4 GPa, as As-As bonding takes place across the Ca-layer. Bonding across the K-layer only occurs for $p$ $\geq$ 12 GPa. These findings demonstrate a new type of collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$: a half-collapsed-tetragonal phase.

$^{57}$Fe M\"ossbauer spectra at different temperatures between $\sim 5$ K and $\sim 300$ K were measured on an oriented mosaic of single crystals of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ . The data indicate that CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is a well formed compound with narrow spectral lines, no traces of other, Fe - containing, secondary phases in the spectra and no static magnetic order. There is no discernible feature at the superconducting transition temperature in any of the hyperfine parameters. The temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting approximately follows the empirical "$T^{3/2}$ law". The hyperfine parameters of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ are compared with those for KFe$_2$As$_2$ measured in this work, and the literature data for CaFe$_2$As$_2$, and were found to be in between those for these two, ordered, 122 compounds, in agreement with the gross view of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ as a structural analog of KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CaFe$_2$As$_2$ that has alternating Ca - and K - layers in the structure.

We study the evolution of the Kondo effect in heavy fermion compounds, Yb(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (0$\leqslant$ x $\leqslant$ 1), by means of temperature-dependent electric resistivity and specific heat. The ground state of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ can be well described by a Kondo model with degeneracy $N$ = 8 and a $T_K\sim$30 K. In the presence of a very similar total CEF splitting with YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$, the ground state of YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is close to a Kondo state with degeneracy $N$ = 2 and a much lower $T_K\sim$ 2 K. Upon Co substitution, the coherence temperature of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is suppressed, accompanied by an emerging Schottky-like feature in specific heat associated with the thermal depopulation of CEF levels upon cooling. For 0.4$\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.9, the ground state remains roughly the same which can be qualitatively understood by Kondo effect in the presence of CEF splitting. There is no clear indication of Kondo coherence observable in resistivity within this substitution range down to 500 mK. The coherence re-appears at around x$\gtrsim$ 0.9 and the coherence temperature increases with higher Co concentration levels., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Single crystals of $R$Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ ($R$=Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by measurements of room-temperature x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent specific heat and temperature-, field-dependent resistivity and anisotropic magnetization. YMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ is a non-local-moment-bearing metal with an electronic specific heat coefficient, $\gamma \sim$ 15 mJ/mol K$^2$. Yb is divalent and basically non-moment bearing in YbMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Ce is trivalent in CeMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ with two magnetic transitions being observed at 2.1 K and 1.5 K. PrMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ does not exhibit any magnetic phase transition down to 0.5 K. The other members being studied ($R$=Nd, Gd-Dy) all exhibits antiferromagnetic transitions at low-temperatures ranging from 3.2 K for NdMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ to 11.9 K for TbMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Whereas GdMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ is isotropic in its paramagnetic state due to zero angular momentum ($L$=0), all the other local-moment-bearing members manifest an anisotropic, planar magnetization in their paramagnetic states. To further study this planar anisotropy, detailed angular-dependent magnetization was carried out on magnetically diluted (Y$_{0.99}$Tb$_{0.01}$)Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ and (Y$_{0.99}$Dy$_{0.01}$)Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Despite the strong, planar magnetization anisotropy, the in-plane magnetic anisotropy is weak and field-dependent. A set of crystal electric field parameters are proposed to explain the observed magnetic anisotropy., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures
