7. A Heterogeneous RRAM In-Memory and SRAM Near-Memory SoC for Fused Frame and Event-Based Target Identification and Tracking

Abstract

Accurate identification of the target and tracking it at high speeds using drone-mounted cameras and compute hardware finds military and commercial applications. Conventional frame-based cameras and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) extract detailed spatial information to show high accuracy but suffer from lower throughput caused by large models. Alternatively, event cameras capture the motion information as an asynchronous event stream with high temporal resolution. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) can be used to process these data at high speed, but the sparse sensing and difficulty in training SNN limit the accuracy. Fusing the complementary spatial and temporal advantages of the frame and event-based pipelines allows high-speed identification and tracking while preserving accuracy. The SNN processes the event stream continuously to provide high-speed target estimates with lower accuracy, while periodic anchors provided by the reliable CNN restore the accuracy. In this work, we present a heterogeneous programmable ARM Cortex-based system-on-a-chip (SoC) in 40-nm Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) ultra low power (ULP) technology with power-efficient RRAM compute-in-memory (CIM) for CNN and high-speed SRAM compute-near-memory (CNM) for SNN for the modality-matched acceleration of the hybrid vision. Our SoC incorporates: 1) two levels of power gating to save 91.8% of total chip power with non-volatile RRAM-CIM; 2) embedded triple error correction (TEC) within RRAM CIM macro to suppress the raw bit errors in reading by >5 orders of magnitude; and 3) parallelly operating CNN and SNN modules to provide >100 outputs/s. Such cross-layer hybrid approaches can mitigate fundamental tradeoffs in sensing and processing.

21. RA09.06: LONG-TERM OUTCOMES OF 650 ESOPHAGEAL CANCER PATIENTS WITH THORACOSCOPIC ESOPHAGECTOMY.

Abstract

Background In 1996 Akaishi et al. reported the first thoracoscopic esophagectomy (TE) in Japan. Total 650 TEs for esophageal cancer have been performed in our institute by October 2016. There are many reports about the short-term outcomes of TE compared with open esophagectomy (OE), but the long-term outcomes of TE have been under debate. The aim of this study is to investigate the survival benefits of TE and to compare with OE and long-term outcomes which other previous reports showed. Methods A total 750 cases who underwent TE (N = 650) or OE (N = 100) between 1994 and 2015 in our hospital were included in this study. They were divided into four groups; surgery without any preoperative treatments (group S, N = 414), surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (Group NAC, clinical stage II or III, N = 116), surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (Group NACRT, clinical stage II or III, N = 68) and salvage surgery after definitive chemoradiotherapy (Group SALV, N = 76). In group S, 100 patients received OE and 314 received TE. The other 3 groups (Group NAC, NACRT and SALV) received only TE. 3-year, 5-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) rates for each group were analyzed and compared. Results In group S, the 5-year OS rate of TE was 63.4% and that of OE was 68.3%, there was no significant difference (Log-Rank test P  = 0.41). Stage-specific OS rates of TE and OE were also compared and there was no significant difference. PFS rates of OE and TE showed the same tendency of OS. 5-year OS rate of group NAC was 63.5%. 3-year OS of group NACRT was 61.4%. 3-year and 5-year OS of group SALV were 41.4% and 34.0%. These results were the same or better than what the previous reports showed. The TE procedure resulted in similar or potentially better long-term outcomes in case of NAC, NACRT and SALV. It's acceptable to say thoracoscopic approach is the standard of esophagectomy. Abstract

This book is the comprehensive volume of the TAIGA (“a great river ” in Japanese) project. Supported by the Japanese government, the project examined the hypothesis that the subseafloor fluid advection system (subseafloor TAIGA) can be categorized into four types, TAIGAs of sulfur, hydrogen, carbon (methane), and iron, according to the most dominant reducing substance, and the chemolithoautotrophic bacteria/archaea that are inextricably associated with respective types of TAIGAs which are strongly affected by their geological background such as surrounding host rocks and tectonic settings. Sub-seafloor ecosystems are sustained by hydrothermal circulation or TAIGA that carry chemical energy to the chemosynthetic microbes living in an extreme environment. The results of the project have been summarized comprehensively in 50 chapters, and this book provides an overall introduction and relevant topics on the mid-ocean ridge system of the Indian Ocean and on the arc-backarc systems ofthe Southern Mariana Trough and Okinawa Trough.
