The northwestern Turkey is a tectonically active belt in with paleogeographical evolution related to the collusion and the escape tectonics accompanied by development of the strike-slip North Anatolian Fault (NAF). In this tectonic setting, the significance the Western Black Sea fault (WBF) and its influence of on the modification of coastal and morphological features are relatively unknown and underappreciated.

Iskenderun Bay is a major shallow embayment in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, where the African and Anatolian Plates converge. This tectonically active basin was investigated for oceanographic, sedimentological, geochemical, and foraminiferal parameters. On the basis of the data acquired, the distribution of living and fossil foraminifera in 284 grab and 54 gravity core samples was determined, the basin floor bathymetry of the bay constructed, radiocarbon ages of sediments and fossils ascertained, and depositional environments reconstructed. It has been discovered that for the last 13.5 k.y., water masses were stratified and sedimentation was discontinuous within the basin, which is characterized by irregular sea bottom morphology. The sedimentation rate was very slow, varying in time and space from 0 to 0.012 cm yr-1. The foraminiferal distributions were spatially varied and discontinuous and indicate a reversal from deep to shallow marine conditions in the cores. These irregularities were attributed to active tectonics in the bay and a major tectonic uplift of the bay since the late Pleistocene. © 2006 Geological Society of America.

The bronchoprotective effect of bioequivalent doses of theophylline (TH; 234 mg) and a combination of TH, proxyphylline (PPH) and diprophylline (DPH) in the proportion 2:3:3 (Neo-Biphyllin, NB; 600 mg) against carbachol-induced bronchoconstriction was studied in 10 healthy non-smokers in a randomised controlled double-blind cross-over trial. The subjects were on a methylxanthine-free diet 4 days prior to and during each study day. Bronchial provocation tests were conducted in the morning and afternoon of the three separate study days--control and two medication days--using a standardised technique. On the control day, the dose of carbachol required to reduce the partial expiratory flow volume at 25% of vital capacity (V25p) by at least 25% was established. A significant protective effect was achieved with both TH (p less than 0.05) and NB (p less than 0.001) as measured by V25p. Bronchoprotection was achieved with low maintenance serum levels of TH.

A quantitative study of benthic foraminifera, sediment texture and composition from two cores was performed to unravel the environmental evolution of the Iskenderun Bay (eastern Turkey) in the Holocene. Core 29 (NE Iskenderun Bay) consists of clay and silt from the top of the core down to 35 cm with dominant bioclasts (coral Cladocora caespitosa) from 35 cm down to the bottom of the core. Core 92, located near an ancient Ceyhan River mouth (Yumurtalik), consists of sandy and silty sediment passing to homogeneous clay and silt at about 48 cm from the top. Several grab samples show very coarse biogenic detritus covered by a centimetric veneer of sandy silt and clay. Radiocarbon dating of corals, molluscs and algae from core 29 and five selected grab samples, the sediment and foraminiferal study indicate that at least three pulses of muddy sedimentation occurred in the bay. (1) An older pulse (about 3700 yrs BP) related to the large-scale forest clearing (Beysheir Occupation Phase). (2) Another pulse coincides with a major delta progradation of the Ceyhan River at about 2140 years BP. (3) A younger pulse follows the diversion of the Ceyhan River mouth toward Yumurtalik, from the Middle Age to 1935.Species interpreted as tolerant of low salinity indicate that the influence of the Ceyhan was minor when the river drained directly into the Mediterranean Sea (approximately 2000 years BP) and progressively increased when the river diverted towards Yumurtalik.
