A matrix representation is introduced for stationary beam-like light fields that allows for simultaneous treatment of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) and the second-order state of spatial coherence. This Coherence-OAM matrix is a counterpart of the 2 x 2 beam Coherence-polarization matrix in a Cartesian polarization basis or Coherence-spin angular momentum (SAM) matrix in a circular polarization basis. The general properties of the Coherence-OAM matrix are discussed and then the Coherence-SAM-OAM matrix is introduced as a unifying entity for treating beams with any coherence, spin and orbital angular momentum states., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

A theoretical framework is developed for scattering of scalar radiation from stationary, three-dimensional media with correlation functions of scattering potentials obeying $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. It is illustrated that unlike in scattering from deterministic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric media, its stationary generalization involves two mechanisms leading to symmetry breaking in the statistics of scattered radiation, one stemming from the complex-valued medium realizations and the other - from the complex-valued degree of medium's correlation., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

A generalization of the classic Gaussian random variable to the family of Multi- Gaussian (MG) random variables characterized by shape parameter M > 0, in addition to the mean and the standard deviation, is introduced. The probability density function of the MG family members is the alternating series of the Gaussian functions with the suitably chosen heights and widths. In particular, for the integer values of M the series has finite number of terms and leads to flattened profiles, while reducing to classic Gaussian density for M = 1. For non-integer, positive values of M a convergent infinite series of Gaussian functions is obtained that can be truncated in practical problems. While for all M > 1 the MG PDF has attened profiles, for 0 < M < 1 it leads to cusped profiles. Moreover, the multivariate extension of the MG random variable is obtained and the Log-Multi-Gaussian (LMG) random variable is introduced., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Light propagation in turbulent media is conventionally studied with the help of the spatio-temporal power spectra of the refractive index fluctuations. In particular, for natural water turbulence several models for the spatial power spectra have been developed based on the classic, Kolmogorov postulates. However, as currently widely accepted, non-Kolmogorov turbulent regime is also common in the stratified flow fields, as suggested by recent developments in atmospheric optics. Until now all the models developed for the non-Kolmogorov optical turbulence were pertinent to atmospheric research and, hence, involved only one advected scalar, e.g., temperature. We generalize the oceanic spatial power spectrum, based on two advected scalars, temperature and salinity concentration, to the non-Kolmogorov turbulence regime, with the help of the so-called "Upper-Bound Limitation" and by adopting the concept of spectral correlation of two advected scalars. The proposed power spectrum can handle general non-Kolmogorov, anisotropic turbulence but reduces to Kolmogorov, isotropic case if the power law exponents of temperature and salinity are set to 11/3 and anisotropy coefficient is set to unity. To show the application of the new spectrum, we derive the expression for the second-order mutual coherence function of a spherical wave and examine its coherence radius (in both scalar and vector forms) to characterize the turbulent disturbance. Our numerical calculations show that the statistics of the spherical wave vary substantially with temperature and salinity non-Kolmogorov power law exponents and temperature-salinity spectral correlation coefficient. The introduced spectrum is envisioned to become of significance for theoretical analysis and experimental measurements of non-classic natural water double-diffusion turbulent regimes.

The power spectrum of water optical turbulence is shown to vary with its average temperature $\left\langle T \right\rangle$ and average salinity concentration $\left\langle S \right\rangle$, as well as with light wavelength $\lambda$. This study explores such variations for $\left\langle T \right\rangle \in \left[ {0\ ^\circ\rm{C},30\ ^\circ\rm{C}} \right]$, $\left\langle S \right\rangle \in \left[ {0\ \rm{ppt},40\ \rm{ppt}} \right]$ covering most of the possible natural water conditions within the Earth's boundary layer and for visible electromagnetic spectrum, $\lambda \in \left[400\ nm, 700\ nm \right]$. For illustration of the effects of these parameters on propagating light we apply the developed power spectrum model for estimation of the scintillation index of a plane wave (the Rytov variance) and the threshold between weak and strong turbulence regimes., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We demonstrate that the orbital angular momentum flux density of a paraxial light beam can change on propagation in free space. These changes are entirely due to the spatial coherence state of the source, and the effect is analogous to correlation-induced changes in the intensity, spectrum and polarization of a beam. The use of the source coherence state to control the width, shape, and transverse shifts of the OAM flux density is demonstrated with numerical examples.

Optical turbulence occurring in the oceanic waters may be detrimental for light beams used in the short-link communication and sensing systems, and, in particular, in underwater LIDARs. We develop a theory capable of predicting the passage of light beams through the bi-static LIDAR systems, for a wide variety of optical waves, including partially coherent and partially polarized, and for a wide family of targets. Our theoretical framework is based on the Huygens-Fresnel integral adopted to random media and optical systems described by the $4\times4$ ABCD matrices. The treatment of oceanic turbulence relies on the recently introduced power spectrum model of the fluctuating refractive-index [Opt. Express 27, 27807 (2019)] capable of accounting for different average temperatures of water. We first analyze the evolution of the second-order beam statistics such as the spectral density and the degree of coherence of the beam on its single pass propagation and then incorporate this knowledge into the analysis of the bi-static LIDAR returns.

Light influenced by the turbulent ocean can be fully characterized with the help of the power spectrum of the water's refractive index fluctuations, resulting from the combined effect of two scalars, temperature and salinity concentration advected by the velocity field. The Nikishovs' model [ Fluid Mech. Res. 27, 8298 (2000)] frequently used in the analysis of light evolution through the turbulent ocean channels is the linear combination of the temperature spectrum, the salinity spectrum and their co-spectrum, each being described by an approximate expression developed by Hill [ J. Fluid Mech. 88, 541562 (1978)] in the first of his four suggested models. The fourth of the Hill's models provides much more precise power spectrum than the first one expressed via a non-linear differential equation that does not have a closed-form solution. We develop an accurate analytic approximation to the fourth Hill's model valid for Prandtl/Schmidt numbers in the interval [3, 3000] and use it for the development of a more precise oceanic power spectrum. To illustrate the advantage of our model, we include numerical examples relating to the spherical wave scintillation index evolving in the underwater turbulent channels with different average temperatures, and, hence, different Prandtl numbers for temperature and different Schmidt numbers for salinity. Since our model is valid for a large range of Prandtl number (or/and Schmidt number), it can be readily adjusted to oceanic waters with seasonal or extreme average temperature and/or salinity or any other turbulent fluid with one or several advected quantities.
