Abstract

We analyzed the yield and fidelity of the quantum state transfer (QST) from a photon polarization qubit to an electron spin qubit in a spin-coherent photo detector consisting of a semiconductor quantum dot. We used a model consisting of the quantum dot, where the QST is carried out, coupled with a photonic cavity. We determined the optimal conditions that allow the realization of both high-yield and high-fidelity QST., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We demonstrate negative polarization created by light-hole exciton excitation in g-factor engineered GaAs quantum wells measured by time-resolved Kerr rotation and polarization-resolved photoluminescence. This negative polarization is a result of polarization transfer from a photon to an electron spin mediated by a light hole. This demonstration is an important step towards achieving quantum media conversion from a photonic qubit to an electron spin qubit required for building a quantum repeater., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

This study evaluated whether the lactic acid bacteriaLactococcus lactissubsp.cremorisstrain FC (FC) could ameliorate host defenses and cognitive ability and extend the lifespan ofCaenorhabditis elegans, a model of senescence. The lifespan and resistance to physical, chemical, and biological stressors were compared betweenC. elegansfed FC and those fedEscherichia coliOP50 (OP), an international standard food forC. elegans. Living FC successfully extended the health span, enhanced host defense, and ameliorated the cognitive ability of the nematodes; even the exopolysaccharides (EPSes) of FC could extend the lifespan ofC. elegans. The chemotaxis index, which was used to evaluate the senescence of sensory neurons, tended to decrease with aging; however, it was more stable in worms fed FC and was significantly higher than that of the control worms at 7 days of age. The worms fed FC were tolerant toSalmonella entericaserovar Enteritidis orStaphylococcus aureusinfection and had better survival than the control worms fed OP. FC showed beneficial effects inC. elegans daf-16andpmk-1mutants, but not inskn-1mutants. Since SKN-1 is theC. elegansortholog of Nrf2, we measured the transcription of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), which is regulated by Nrf2, in murine macrophages and found that HO-1 mRNA expression was increased >5 times by inoculation with either FC cells or heat-killed bacteria with EPSes. Thus, both FC and the EPSes can affect longevityviathe SKN-1/Nrf2 pathway in both nematodes and mammalian cells.IMPORTANCEAgeing is one of our greatest challenges. The World Health Organization proposed the concept of “Active Ageing” might encourage people to continue to work according to their capacities and preferences as they grow old and would prevent or delay disabilities and chronic diseases that are costly to both individuals and the society, considering that disease prevention is more economical than treatment. Probiotic bacteria such as lactobacilli are living microorganisms that exert beneficial effects on human health when ingested in sufficient amounts and can promote longevity. The significance of this study is that it revealed the anti-senescence and various beneficial effects of the probiotic representative bacteriumLactococcus lactissubsp.cremorisstrain FC and its exopolysaccharides in the nematodeCaenorhabditis elegans.

The time-delay in an actively-controlled SDOF system is the sum of the time spent in acquiring data and the time spent to create the necessary control force in the mechanical system. The control force come from actuator that operate based on certain dynamics. These dynamics can be modeled as a first-order representation up to the frequency of the 45 degree phase lag point.

The use of velocity and acceleration feedbacks for controlling a hysteretic system, although a novel approach, merely equates to a measurement convenience. The control law for Z feedback is viewed as a better approach for hysteretic system control since it has been extensively studied in different engineering fields and has the advantage of featuring the inverse optimal control problem. The control law for Z feedback also simplifies the design process.

Abstract

When l-arginine is depleted, neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) has been reported to generate superoxide. A flavoprotein module construct of nNOS has been demonstrated to be sufficient for superoxide production. In contrast, nNOS was reported not to be involved in superoxide formation, because such formation occurred with a mixture of the boiled enzyme and redox-active cofactors. We aimed to resolve these controversial issues by examining superoxide generation, without the addition of redox-active cofactors, by recombinant wild-type nNOS and by C415A-nNOS, which has a mutation in the haem proximal site. In a superoxide-sensitive adrenochrome assay, the initial lag period of C415A-nNOS was increased 2-fold compared with that of native nNOS. With ESR using the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide, prominent signals of the superoxide adduct were obtained with wild-type nNOS, whereas an enzyme preparation boiled for 5min did not produce superoxide. Higher concentrations of NaCN (10mM) decreased superoxide formation by 63%. Although the activity of the reductase domain was intact, superoxide generation from C415A-nNOS was decreased markedly, to only 10% of that of the wild-type enzyme. These results demonstrate that nNOS truly catalyses superoxide formation, that this involves the oxygenase domain, and that full-length nNOS hinders the reductase domain from producing superoxide.
