Chiral metasurfaces provide invaluable tools capable of controlling structured light required for biosensing, photochemistry, holography, and quantum photonics. Here we suggest and realize a universal strategy for controlling the chiral response of resonant metasurfaces via the interplay of meta-atom geometry and lattice arrangements within all five possible planar Bravais symmetries. By introducing chiral gradient metasurfaces, we illustrate how our approach allows producing a predictable chiral response tunable by simple parameter variations. We highlight that symmetry-controlled chiral response provides an additional degree of freedom in optical signal processing, and showcase this with simultaneous mid-IR image encoding in two fundamental quantities, transmission and circular dichroism. Our proposed concept represents a universal toolkit for on-demand design and control of chiral metastructures that has potential for numerous applications in life sciences, quantum optics and more.

Laser-based displays are highly sought after for their superior brightness and color performance, especially in advanced applications like augmented reality (AR). However, their broader adoption has been hindered by bulky projector designs and complex optical module assemblies. Here, we introduce a new laser display architecture enabled by large-scale visible photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to address these challenges. Unlike previous projector-style laser displays, this architecture features an ultra-thin, flat-panel form factor, replacing bulky free-space illumination modules with a single, high-performance photonic chip. Centimeter-scale PIC devices, which integrate thousands of distinct optical components on-chip, are carefully tailored to achieve high display uniformity, contrast, and efficiency. We demonstrate a 2 mm-thick flat-panel laser display combining the PIC with a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) panel, achieving 211% of the color gamut and more than 80% volume reduction compared to traditional LCoS displays. We further showcase its application in a see-through AR system. Our work represents a major advancement in the integration of nanophotonics with display technology, enabling a range of new display concepts, from high-performance immersive displays to slim-panel 3D holography.

To deepen our understanding of Quantum Gravity and its connections with black holes and cosmology, building a common language and exchanging ideas across different approaches is crucial. The Nordita Program "Quantum Gravity: from gravitational effective field theories to ultraviolet complete approaches" created a platform for extensive discussions, aimed at pinpointing both common grounds and sources of disagreements, with the hope of generating ideas and driving progress in the field. Non-pertrubative quantum gravity formulated as a unitary four-dimensional theory suggests that certain amount of non-locality, such as infinite-derivative operators, can be present in the action, in both cases of Analytic Infinite Derivative gravity and Asymptotically Safe gravity. Such operators lead to the emergence of Background Induced States on top of any background deviating from the flat spacetime. Quasi-normal modes (QNMs) corresponding to these excitations are analyzed in the present paper with the use of an example of a static nearly Schwarzschild black hole. We mainly target micro-Black Holes, given that they are strongly affected by the details of UV completion for gravity, while real astrophysical black holes can be well described in EFT framework. We find that frequencies of QNMs are deviating from those in a General Relativity setup and, moreover, that the unstable QNMs are also possible. This leads to the necessity of constraints on gravity modifications or lower bounds on masses of the stable micro-Black Holes or both., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

Van Hove singularities (vHs) located close to the Fermi level in Kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) have profound influence on their electronic and transport characteristics. Specifically, magneto-transport and susceptibility measurements on CsV3Sb5 reveal an anomalous temperature dependence of the upper critical field H_c2 (T), characterized by a pronounced upward curvature for both in-plane and c-axis magnetic fields, with zero-temperature H_c2 values of ~6.0 T and ~1.2 T, respectively. Our theoretical analysis, using a newly developed single-band model incorporating vHs and gap anisotropy, suggests that the observed upper critical field behavior is predominantly driven by the anisotropy of the Fermi velocity originating from vHs, instead of multi-band effects or gap anisotropy. Increased electron scattering introduced by proton irradiation defects smears out the vHs, reduces anisotropy, and recovers the conventional H_c2 (T) behavior, corroborating our proposed model., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures

Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPMs) have been recently utilized to deal with various blind image restoration (IR) tasks, where they have demonstrated outstanding performance in terms of perceptual quality. However, the task-specific nature of existing solutions and the excessive computational costs related to their training, make such models impractical and challenging to use for different IR tasks than those that were initially trained for. This hinders their wider adoption, especially by those who lack access to powerful computational resources and vast amount of training data. In this work we aim to address the above issues and enable the successful adoption of DPMs in practical IR-related applications. Towards this goal, we propose a modular diffusion probabilistic IR framework (DP-IR), which allows us to combine the performance benefits of existing pre-trained state-of-the-art IR networks and generative DPMs, while it requires only the additional training of a relatively small module (0.7M params) related to the particular IR task of interest. Moreover, the architecture of the proposed framework allows for a sampling strategy that leads to at least four times reduction of neural function evaluations without suffering any performance loss, while it can also be combined with existing acceleration techniques such as DDIM. We evaluate our model on four benchmarks for the tasks of burst JDD-SR, dynamic scene deblurring, and super-resolution. Our method outperforms existing approaches in terms of perceptual quality while it retains a competitive performance with respect to fidelity metrics.

We present a novel two-view geometry estimation framework which is based on a differentiable robust loss function fitting. We propose to treat the robust fundamental matrix estimation as an implicit layer, which allows us to avoid backpropagation through time and significantly improves the numerical stability. To take full advantage of the information from the feature matching stage we incorporate learnable weights that depend on the matching confidences. In this way our solution brings together feature extraction, matching and two-view geometry estimation in a unified end-to-end trainable pipeline. We evaluate our approach on the camera pose estimation task in both outdoor and indoor scenarios. The experiments on several datasets show that the proposed method outperforms both classic and learning-based state-of-the-art methods by a large margin. We show how infinite derivative modifications of gravity impact on the stochastic background of Gravitational Waves from early Universe. The generic property of the ghost-free theory fixed on Minkowski space-time is the emergence of an infinite number of complex mass states when other classical backgrounds are considered. These additional states are shown to enhance the power spectrum of scalar perturbations generated during inflation. Current and future space-based and terrestrial interferometers offer indirect testing methods for the infinite derivative gravity action, enabling the exploration of new parameter spaces. Multiple anomalous features in electronic spectra of metals with kagome lattice structure -- van Hove singularities, Dirac points, and flat bands -- imply that materials containing this structural motif may lie at a nexus of topological and correlated electron physics. Due to the prospects of such exceptional electronic behavior, the recent discovery of superconductivity coexisting with charge-density wave (CDW) order in the layered kagome metals AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ (A=K,Rb,Cs) has attracted considerable attention. Notably, these kagome metals express unconventional magnetotransport behavior, including a linear-in-H diagonal resistivity at low fields, and an even more peculiar, nonmonotonic sign-changing behavior of the Hall resistivity, which has been speculated to arise from a chiral CDW. We argue here that this unusual magnetotransport derives not from such unconventional phenomena, but rather from the unique fermiology of the AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ materials. Specifically, it is caused by a large, concave hexagonal Fermi surface sheet formed in the close proximity to the van Hove singularities, which is backfolded into a small hexagonal sheet and two large triangular sheets in the CDW state. We introduce a model of the electronic structure of these Fermi surface sheets that allows for a full analytical treatment within Boltzmann kinetic theory and that enables semi-quantitative fits of our transport data. Specifically, we find that the anomalous magnetotransport behavior is caused by the confluence of strong reduction of the Fermi velocity near the van Hove singularities located near the vertices of the hexagonal sheet and sharp corners in Fermi surface generated by the CDW reconstruction., Comment: 36 pages, 15 figures, Subm. We demonstrate that chiral response can be achieved in resonant metasurfaces with a monoclinic lattice symmetry (the so-called Bravais oblique lattices) where the mirror symmetry is broken by the lattice asymmetry and also by a substrate, whereas each individual meta-atom remains fully achiral. We describe the underlying physics by introducing a mode chirality parameter as a quantitative measure of the lattice chiral eigenmodes. Nonlinear chiral photonics explores nonlinear response of chiral structures, and it offers a pathway to novel optical functionalities not accessible through linear or achiral systems. Here we present the first application of nanostructured van der Waals materials to nonlinear chiral photonics. We demonstrate the three orders of magnitude enhancement of the third-harmonic generation from hBN metasurfaces driven by quasi-bound states in the continuum and accompanied by strong nonlinear circular dichroism at the resonances. This novel platform for chiral metaphotonics can be employed for achieving large circular dichroism combined with high-efficiency harmonic generation in a broad frequency range.

We report an unusual anisotropic paramagnetic peak effect observed in reversible magnetization of a single crystalline nodal superconductor $\text{Rh}_{17}\text{S}_{15}$. Both temperature- and field-dependent magnetization measurements reveal a distinct novel vortex state above approximately 1 T. This peak effect is most pronounced when the magnetic field, $H$, is applied parallel to the $\left[111\right]$ direction, whereas it diminishes for $H\parallel\left[110\right]$. Intriguingly, for $H\parallel\left[100\right]$, instead of a peak, we observe a step-like decrease in $M(T)$, with the step amplitude increasing in larger applied magnetic fields. This behavior is opposite to the expectations of conventional Meissner expulsion. The magnitude of the peak effect, expressed in terms of dimensionless volume susceptibility, is on the order of $\Delta\chi=10^{-5}$ (with full diamagnetic screening corresponding to $\chi=-1$). The observed anisotropic paramagnetic vortex response is unusual considering the cubic symmetry of $\text{Rh}_{17}\text{S}_{15}$. We propose that in this distinct vortex phase, a small but finite attractive interaction between vortices below $H_{c2}$ may be responsible for this unusual phenomenon. Furthermore, the vortices seem to prefer aligning along the $\left[111\right]$ direction, rotating toward it when the magnetic field is applied in other directions. Our findings add another item to the list of unusual properties of $\text{Rh}_{17}\text{S}_{15}$ that attracted recent attention as the first unconventional superconductor that has a mineral analog, miassite, found in nature.

Automatic ribs segmentation and numeration can increase computed tomography assessment speed and reduce radiologists mistakes. We introduce a model for multilabel ribs segmentation with hierarchical loss function, which enable to improve multilabel segmentation quality. Also we propose postprocessing technique to further increase labeling quality. Although General Relativity predicts the presence of a singularity inside of a Black Hole, it is not a complete theory of gravity. A real structure of a Black Hole interior near an expected singularity depends on the UV completion of gravity. In this paper, we establish that the question whether singular spherically symmetric solutions are absent is governed by the functional form of a non-perturbative graviton propagator. We explicitly show in a framework of a ghost-free infinite derivative gravity that for the graviton propagator of an exponential form favored by the unitarity a singularity is not possible unless an unphysical situation when the total mass of the Black Hole is infinite is considered.

Generation of even-order optical harmonics requires noncentrosymmetric structures being conventionally observed in crystals lacking the center of inversion. In centrosymmetric systems, even-order harmonics may arise, e.g., at surfaces but such effects are usually very weak. Here we observe optical harmonics up to 4-th order generated under the normal incidence from centrosymmetric dielectric metasurfaces empowered by resonances. We design silicon metasurfaces supporting optical quasibound states in the continuum and guided-mode resonances, and demonstrate the enhancement of second-harmonic signals by over three orders of magnitude compared to nonresonant thin films. Under the optimal conditions, the brightness of the second harmonic approaches that of the third harmonic, and the 4th-order harmonic becomes detectable.

Understanding the magnetoresistance (MR) of a magnetic material forms the basis for uncovering the orbital mechanisms and charge-spin interactions in the system. Although the parent state of iron-based high-temperature superconductors, including $BaFe_2As_2$, exhibits unusual electron transport properties resulting from spin and charge correlations, there is still valuable insight to be gained by understanding the in-plane MR effect due to twin domains in the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic (AF) ordered state. Here, we study the in-plane magnetoresistance anisotropy in detwinned $BaFe_2As_2$ and compare the results to the non-magnetic Ni-doped sample. We find that in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, $BaFe_2As_2$ exhibits anisotropic MR that becomes large at low temperatures and high fields. Both transverse and longitudinal MRs are highly anisotropic and dependent on the field and current orientations. These results cannot be fully explained by calculations considering only the anisotropic Fermi surface. Instead, the spin orientation of the ordered moment also affects the MR effect, suggesting the presence of a large charge-spin interaction in $BaFe_2As_2$ that is not present in the Ni-doped material.

This study explores four methods of generating paraphrases in Malayalam, utilizing resources available for English paraphrasing and pre-trained Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models. We evaluate the resulting paraphrases using both automated metrics, such as BLEU, METEOR, and cosine similarity, as well as human annotation. Our findings suggest that automated evaluation measures may not be fully appropriate for Malayalam, as they do not consistently align with human judgment. This discrepancy underscores the need for more nuanced paraphrase evaluation approaches especially for highly agglutinative languages.

Advancing resonant nanophotonics requires novel building blocks. Recently, cavities in high-index dielectrics have been shown to resonantly confine light inside a lower-index region. These so-called Mie voids represent a counterpart to solid high-index dielectric Mie resonators, offering novel functionality such as resonant behavior in the ultraviolet spectral region. However, the well-known and highly useful Babinet's principle, which relates the scattering of solid and inverse structures, is not strictly applicable for this dielectric case as it is only valid for infinitesimally thin perfect electric conductors. Here, we show that Babinet's principle can be generalized to dielectric systems within certain boundaries, which we refer to as the quasi-Babinet principle and demonstrate for spherical and more generically shaped Mie resonators. Limitations arise due to geometry-dependent terms as well as material frequency dispersion and losses. Thus, our work not only offers deeper physical insight into the working mechanism of these systems but also establishes simple design rules for constructing dielectric resonators with complex functionalities from their complementary counterparts., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We use transport measurements to determine the in-plane anisotropy of the upper critical field Hc2 in detwinned superconducting Ba(Fe1-xMx)2As2 (M = Co, Ni) single crystals. In previous measurements on twinned single crystals, the charge carrier doping dependence (x) of the upper critical field anisotropy for fields along the inter-planar (c-axis) and in-plane field directions was found to increase in the overdoped regime. For underdoped samples, which exhibit a spin nematic phase below the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition temperature Ts , we find that Hc2 along the a-axis is considerably lower than that along the b-axis. The upper critical field anisotropy disappears in the over-doped regime when the system becomes tetragonal. By combining these results with inelastic neutron scattering studies of spin excitations, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we conclude that superconductivity in under-doped iron pnictides is orbital selective - with a dominant contribution from electrons with the dyz orbital character and being intimately associated with spin excitations.

We generalize the concept of optical scattering matrix ($S$-matrix) to characterize harmonic generation and frequency mixing in planar metasurfaces in the limit of undepleted pump approximation. We show that the symmetry properties of such nonlinear $S$-matrix are determined by the microscopic and macroscopic symmetries of the metasurface. We demonstrate that for description of degenerate frequency mixing processes such as optical harmonic generation, the multidimensional $S$-matrix can be replaced with a reduced two-dimensional $S$-matrix. We show that for metasurfaces possessing specific point group symmetries, the selection rules determining the transformation of the reduced nonlinear $S$-matrix are simplified substantially and can be expressed in a compact form. We apply the developed approach to analyse chiral harmonic generation in nonlinear metasurfaces with various symmetries including rotational, in-plane mirror, and out-of-plane mirror symmetries. For each of those symmetries, we confirm the results of the developed analysis by full-wave numerical calculations. In this paper, we present Toloka Visual Question Answering, a new crowdsourced dataset allowing comparing performance of machine learning systems against human level of expertise in the grounding visual question answering task. In this task, given an image and a textual question, one has to draw the bounding box around the object correctly responding to that question. Every image-question pair contains the response, with only one correct response per image. Our dataset contains 45,199 pairs of images and questions in English, provided with ground truth bounding boxes, split into train and two test subsets. Besides describing the dataset and releasing it under a CC BY license, we conducted a series of experiments on open source zero-shot baseline models and organized a multi-phase competition at WSDM Cup that attracted 48 participants worldwide. We review the physics and some applications of photonic structures designed for the realisation of strong $\textit{nonlinear chiroptical response}$. We pay much attention to the recent strategy of utilizing different types of $\textit{optical resonances}$ in metallic and dielectric subwavelength structures and metasurfaces, including surface plasmon resonances, Mie resonances, lattice guided modes, and bound states in the continuum. In this work we present a novel optimization strategy for image reconstruction tasks under analysis-based image regularization, which promotes sparse and/or low-rank solutions in some learned transform domain. We parameterize such regularizers using potential functions that correspond to weighted extensions of the $\ell_p^p$-vector and $\mathcal{S}_p^p$ Schatten-matrix quasi-norms with $0 < p \le 1$. Our proposed minimization strategy extends the Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares (IRLS) method, typically used for synthesis-based $\ell_p$ and $\mathcal{S}_p$ norm and analysis-based $\ell_1$ and nuclear norm regularization. We prove that under mild conditions our minimization algorithm converges linearly to a stationary point, and we provide an upper bound for its convergence rate. Further, to select the parameters of the regularizers that deliver the best results for the problem at hand, we propose to learn them from training data by formulating the supervised learning process as a stochastic bilevel optimization problem. We show that thanks to the convergence guarantees of our proposed minimization strategy, such optimization can be successfully performed with a memory-efficient implicit back-propagation scheme. We implement our learned IRLS variants as recurrent networks and assess their performance on the challenging image reconstruction tasks of non-blind deblurring, super-resolution and demosaicking. In this paper, we propose a new procedure for unconditional and conditional forecasting in agent-based models. The proposed algorithm is based on the application of amortized neural networks and consists of two steps. The first step simulates artificial datasets from the model. In the second step, a neural network is trained to predict the future values of the variables using the history of observations. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm is its speed. This is due to the fact that, after the training procedure, it can be used to yield predictions for almost any data without additional simulations or the re-estimation of the neural network

In this chapter we review the recent developments of realizing $R^2$-like inflation in the framework of a most general UV nonlocal extension of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR). It is a well-motivated robust approach towards quantum gravity. In the past decades, nonlocal gravitational theories which are quadratic in curvature have been understood to be ghost-free and super-renormalizable around maximally symmetric spacetimes. However, in the context of early Universe cosmology we show that one must go beyond the quadratic curvature nonlocal gravity in order to achieve a consistent ghost-free framework of Universe evolution from quasi de Sitter to Minkowski spacetime. In this regard, we discuss a construction of a most general nonlocal gravity action that leads to $R^2$-like inflation and discuss the corresponding observational predictions for the scalar and tensor spectral tilts, tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the primordial non-Gaussianities. We present an analysis of how the nonlocal inflationary cosmology goes beyond the established notions of effective field theories of inflation. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) are building a new High Field Vertical Magnet Test Facility (HFVMTF) for testing superconducting cables in high magnetic field. The background magnetic field of 15 T in the HFVMTF will be produced by a magnet provided by LBNL. The HFVMTF is jointly funded by the US DOE Offices of Science, High Energy Physics (HEP), and Fusion Energy Sciences (FES), and will serve as a superconducting cable test facility in high magnetic fields and a wide range of temperatures for HEP and FES communities. This facility will also be used to test high-field superconducting magnet models and demonstrators, including hybrid magnets, produced by the US Magnet Development Program (MDP). The paper describes the status of the facility, including construction, cryostat designs, top and lambda plates, and systems for powering, and quench protection and monitoring.

Gravity can be embedded into a renormalizable theory by means of adding quadratic in curvature terms. However, this at first leads to the presence of the Weyl ghost. It is possible to get rid of this ghost if the locality assumption is weakened and the propagator of the graviton is represented by an entire function of the d'Alembertian operator without new poles and zeros. Models of this type admit a cosmological solution describing the $R^2$, or Starobinsky, inflation.
