- Abstract
For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D–T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D–T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D–T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D–T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D–T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D–T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfvèn eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems…) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D–T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D–T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

Confinement quality as good as ELM-free H-mode at densities substantially above die Greenwald density limit((n) over bar(e,0)/n(GW) = 1.4) has been obtained in discharges with a radiative boundary under quasistationary conditions for 20 times the energy confinement time. This is achieved by optimizing the gas-fueling rate of RI-mode discharges which tailors their favorable energy confinement and lends to discharges with beta values just below the operational limit beta(n) = 2 of TEXTOR-94, thereby effectively avoiding confinement back transitions or disruptions. In addition, this high-density regime is favorable for helium removal and results in figures of merit tau(p,He)(*)/tau(E) approximate to 10-15, relevant for a future fusion power reactor.

Co-injection (DO --> D+) applied to TEXTOR leads to a hot ion node regime with enhanced confinement. A synergistic increase of the beam effects is observed with the addition of ICRH at omega = 2omega(cD) = omega(cH) (H minority heating scenario) resulting, beside other reviewed effects, in a significant increase of the ion temperature and of the beam driven current (respectively larger than 30 % and 50 % for the addition of an RF power comparable to the NBI one). The large ion heating efficiency of ICRH also remains when ICRH is added to balanced injection and the hot ion mode regime remains up to the maximum achieved beta (=2/3 of the Troyan limit with more than 6MW of auxiliary heating). ICRH also leads to the formation of a more 'isotropic' tail. These results are interpreted with the help of a Fokker-Planck code which computes the beam distribution function in presence of RF and of TRANSP simulations. The amount of RF absorption by the H minority by the ion beam and die bulk plasma is theoretically evaluated. It is shown that a large part of the synergistic effects can be explained by the rise of the electron temperature due to the minority heating which increases the beam slowing down time and its critical energy. A smaller contribution to the effects is due to direct coupling of the RF power to the beam (less than 10 % of the total RF absorbed power) and to the decrease of the plasma toroidal rotation induced by the RF. ICRH has also been added to co-injection at omega = 3omega(CD). In this case no minority heating is present and the RF energy coupling to the beam is one of the dominant effects. It leads to the formation of a very energetic tail of the ion beam with a strong increase of the beam-target neutron reactivity.

JOREK 3D non-linear MHD simulations of a D2 Massive Gas Injection (MGI) triggered disruption in JET are presented and compared in detail to experimental data. The MGI creates an overdensity that rapidly expands in the direction parallel to the magnetic field. It also causes the growth of magnetic islands (m=n ¼ 2=1 and 3/2 mainly) and seeds the 1/1 internal kink mode. O-points of all island chains (including 1/1) are located in front of the MGI, consistently with experimental observations. A burst of MHD activity and a peak in plasma current take place at the same time as in the experiment. However, the magnitude of these two effects is much smaller than in the experiment. The simulated radiation is also much below the experimental level. As a consequence, the thermal quench is not fully reproduced. Directions for progress are identified. The existence of an inward momentum pinch in JET plasmas was reported in the last IAEA meeting. Since then, several parametric scans to study the size of the inward momentum pinch demonstrate very robustly that the pinch number Rνpinch/χφ in H-mode plasmas is between 3-5 at r/a=0.4-0.8. Only in plasmas with R/Ln > 3, larger Rνpinch/χφ > 5 are found while other parametric dependencies are weaker. The Prandtl number is not found to depend very strongly on any of the parameters scanned, the values being typically between 1.5 and 2 at mid-radius. In intrinsic rotation studies, toroidal magnetic field ripple was found to affect both the edge rotation by lowering it typically close to zero or to small counter-rotation values and also core rotation where it is counter-rotating. An experiment to study Mode Conversion Flow Drive was performed using He3 ICRH scheme. Large central counter-rotation up to νφ = - 30 km/s was observed at He3 concentration levels of 10-17%, the rotation being proportional to ICRH power. A strong toroidal rotation braking has been observed in plasmas with application of an n = 1 magnetic perturbation field. The inferred torque has a global profile and originates from non-resonant components. Two types of edge rotation sinks have been analysed using recent JET data. Firstly, ELMs have been found to consistently cause a larger drop in momentum in comparison with the energy loss. Secondly, a difference in the magnitude of momentum and energy losses created by multiple charge-exchange reactions between neutrals and ions is observed, and with a significantly larger reduction in momentum than in energy content. While it seems probable that rotation profiles will be peaked in ITER thanks to the robust pinch term, its absolute value is still very challenging to predict with the present knowledge of sources and sinks and also due to the uncertainties in the rotation around the plasma edge.

- Abstract
This paper attempts to give an overview on the study of the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) and the related velocity oscillation of the zonal flow (ZF) at TEXTOR. The reported results are obtained from poloidal cross correlation reflectometry. The advantages of the diagnostic combined with a multi-antenna set-up, as it is installed at TEXTOR, are shortly reviewed and compared with other diagnostics used in experiments on GAMs. Furthermore, the GAM properties in ohmic discharges are reported as frequency scaling with local temperature, poloidal structure and radial distribution. GAM induced density fluctuations and related velocity oscillations are measured for a large radial range. In the context of the latter the collisionality on the GAMs at the plasma edge is investigated. The measurement of the GAM related velocity fluctuations shows that the ZF occurs in two rings at least, separated by a rational surface. The velocity oscillation allows us to estimate the effect of GAMs on the shearing rate. The influence on the shearing rate is quantitatively investigated. The GAM induced shearing rate is not able to overcome the decorrelation rate of the ambient turbulence (AT). Also the relation between AT and GAMs is analyzed. Therefore the AT is characterized and the turbulence driving the GAMs is discussed. A relation between the density scale length and the pronounced occurrence of GAMs is obtained. This is related to a narrow region of k (perpendicular to) rho(s) values, which is characteristic for drift ballooning modes. The spectrum of the AT is analyzed in both ZF rings. A significant change in the shape of the low frequency turbulence is obtained. This may be connected with a transition from drift ballooning modes to ITG modes. The latter seems to drive the GAMs less effectively.

Since ergodic divertors are proposed to control the impurity concentration in tokamak plasmas the influence of a resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) from the dynamic ergodic divertor (DED) in the m/n = 3/1 mode on argon impurity transport is studied at the tokamak TEXTOR. Although the application of a DED current below the threshold for m/n = 3/1 tearing mode excitation in an NBI-heated L-mode plasma does not change the argon transport coefficients in r/a < 0.8, an additional transport mechanism within an error of 34% cannot be excluded. Observed changes of the iron ion density distribution for r/a < 0.6 can only be explained by a change of the transport. In addition the argon injection experiments show that an RMP reduces the inflow of particles into r/a < 0.8 and that a tearing mode seems to increase the local transport although at first view the experimental data indicate a reduction of the transport.

Clear observations of early triggering of neo-classical tearing modes by sawteeth with long quiescent periods have motivated recent efforts to control, and in particular destabilize, sawteeth. One successful approach explored in TCV utilizes electron cyclotron heating in order to locally increase the current penetration time in the core. The latter is also achieved in various machines by depositing electron cyclotron current drive or ion cyclotron current drive close to the 9 = 1 rational surface. Crucially, localized current drive also succeeds in destabilizing sawteeth which are otherwise stabilized by a co-existing population of energetic trapped ions in the core. In addition, a recent reversed toroidal field campaign at JET demonstrates that counter-neutral beam injection (NBI) results in shorter sawtooth periods than in the Ohmic regime. The clear dependence of the sawtooth period on the NBI heating power and the direction of injection also manifests itself in terms of the toroidal plasma rotation, which consequently requires consideration in the theoretical interpretation of the experiments. Another feature of NBI, expected to be especially evident in the negative ion based neutral beam injection (NNBI) heating planned for ITER, is the parallel velocity asymmetry of the fast ion population. It is predicted that a finite orbit effect of asymmetrically distributed circulating ions could strongly modify sawtooth stability. Furthermore, NNBI driven current with non-monotonic profile could significantly slow down the evolution of the safety factor in the core, thereby delaying sawteeth.

- Abstract
With the dynamic ergodic divertor in TEXTOR fundamental effects of the coupling of external magnetic field perturbations to the confined plasma have been studied. The non-linear coupling between external (m/n = 12/4) and internal modes (m/n = 3/1) has been investigated. The critical perturbation field (m/n = 3/1) for the excitation of an m/n = 2/1 tearing mode depends not only on the magnitude but also on the direction of the toroidal angular momentum input by neutral beam injection (NBI). Below the excitation threshold of this mode a toroidal spin-up of the plasma has been observed, which only depends on the strength of the perturbation field. It is independent of both the rotation direction of the external perturbation field and the toroidal angular momentum supplied by the NBI.
