OZONE layer depletion ,APPROXIMATION error ,OZONE ,ZONE melting ,INFORMATION measurement - Abstract
The strong Antarctic vortex plays a crucial role in forming an expansive region with significant stratospheric ozone depletion during austral spring, commonly referred to as the Antarctic "ozone hole". This study examines daily ozone column behavior during this phenomenon using ERA5 reanalysis data and ground-based observations from 10 Antarctic stations collected between September and December from 2008 to 2022. A preliminary analysis of these datasets revealed smoothly varying patterns with quasi-uniform gradients in the ozone distribution within the ozone hole. This observation led to the hypothesis that average ozone columns over zones, defined as concentric areas around the South Pole, can be estimated using mean values of the measurements derived from station observations. This study aims to evaluate the validity of this hypothesis. The results indicate that the mean ozone levels calculated from daily measurements at two stations—Belgrano and Dome Concordia, or Belgrano and Arrival Heights—provide a reliable approximation of the average ozone levels over the zone spanning 70°S to 90°S. Including additional stations extended the zone of reliable approximation northward to 58°S. The approximation error was estimated to range from 5% to 7% at 1σ and from 6% to 8% at the 10th–90th percentile levels. Furthermore, the geographical distribution of the stations enabled a schematic reconstruction of the ozone hole's position and shape. On the other hand, the high frequency of ground-based measurements contributed to studying the ozone hole variability in both the inner area and edges on an hourly time scale. These findings have practical implications for the near-real-time monitoring of ozone hole development, along with satellite observations, considering ground-based measurements as a source of information about ozone layer in the South Pole region. The results also suggest the possible role of observations from the ground in the analyses of pre-satellite-era hole behavior. Additionally, this study found a high degree of consistency between ground-based measurements and corresponding ERA5 reanalysis data, further supporting the reliability of the observations. Physics - General Physics - Abstract
Experimental evidence of superconductors with critical temperatures above $373\:K$ is presented. In a family of different compounds we demonstrate the superconductor state, the transition to normal state above $387\:K$, an intermediate $242\:K$ superconductor, susceptibility up to $350\:K$, $I-V$ curves at $4.2\:K$ in magnetic field of $12\:T$ and current up to $60\:A$, $300\:K$ Josephson Junctions and Shapiro steps with radiation of $5\:GHz$ to $21\:THz$, $300\:K$ tapes tests with high currents up to $3000\:A$ and many $THz$ images of coins and washers. Due to a pending patent, the exact chemical characterization and technological processes for these materials are temporarily withheld and will be presented elsewhere., Comment: 10 pages, 24 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity ,Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
For the first order Metal Insulator Transitions we show that together with the d.c conductance zero there is a second critical point, where the dielectric constant becomes zero and further turns negative. At this point the metallic reflectivity sharply increases. The two points can be separated by a Phase Separation State in a 3D disordered system, but may tend to merge in 2D. For illustration we evaluate the dielectric function in a simple effective medium approximation and show that at the second point it turns negative. We reproduce the experimental data on a typical Mott insulator like MnO, demonstrating the presence of the two points clearly. We discuss other experiments for studies of the phase separation state and a similar phase separation in superconductors with insulating inclusions., Comment: 4pages, 2 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
The quantum bit error rate is a key quantity in quantum communications. If the quantum channel is the atmosphere, the information is usually encoded in the polarization of a photon. A link budget is required, which takes into account the depolarization of the photon after its interaction with the atmosphere as well as absorption, scattering and atmospheric emissions. An experimental setup for the reproduction of a simple model of the atmosphere is used to evaluate the quantum bit error rate in a BB84 protocol and the results are presented. This result represents a first step toward the realization of an optical bench experiment where atmospheric effects are simulated and controlled for reproducing the effects on a quantum channel in different meteorological situations.

The application of the copper bromide (CuBr) laser as an attractive tool in the micro-machining of different materials has been demonstrated. High-quality drilling by trepanning and precision cutting was established on several materials with a negligible heat-affected zone (HAZ). That good performance was a result of the combination of high power visible radiation, short pulses, and close to the diffraction-limited laser beam quality with high-speed galvo scanner beam steering., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Regional anaesthesia techniques in ophthalmology are usually utilized for day case surgery. During various procedures, profound akinesia of the eye and anaesthesia of the surgical site are required, both of which are achieved with retrobulbar block. Due to the anatomy of the eye, life-threatening complications are possible. An 82-year-old female with secondary post-herpetic uveitic glaucoma of the right eye presented at the Department of Ophthalmology for an elective trans-scleral laser cyclophotocoagulation. She was given a retrobulbar block to the right eye with 2 mL of 0.5% levobupivacaine and 2 mL of 2% lidocaine. The procedure was technically performed without any issues. 2-3 minutes after the injection she became lethargic and 5 minutes later she lost consciousness and developed severe hypotension with bradycardia and respiratory arrest. She was successfully intubated and resuscitated, using mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, fluid therapy and intravenous lipid emulsion. There are three mechanisms for local anaesthetic (LA) to reach the central nervous system after a retrobulbar block: systemic absorption of LA, direct intra-arterial injection and retrograde flow into the cerebral circulation, and injecting LA into the subdural space via puncturing the dural optic nerve sheath, the latter being most common. The clinical picture of our patient was very consistent with subdural anaesthesia after exposure of the pons, midbrain and cranial nerves to LA, i.e. brainstem anaesthesia. Following appropriate life support measures taken in our case, there was a successful outcome. To minimize the chance for brainstem anaesthesia after retrobulbar block, we recommend low volume with low concentration of LA and block performance by an experienced ophthalmologist or anaesthesiologist with proper technique. Patients receiving retrobulbar anaesthesia should be carefully monitored at least 20 minutes after the block. Life support equipment should be available before performing retrobulbar block.

Despite a lot has already been done in the field of safety improvement during anesthesia, medication errors still occur during everyday practice. Syringe or ampule swaps are usually the most frequent type of medication error. Recent studies prove that nearly 80% of these errors are preventable. In our case, 30 mg (3 ml) of dopamine (Dopamin Fresenius 10 mg/ml) was injected to the patient's intravenous line instead of 3 mg (3 ml) midazolam (Midazolam Accord 1 mg/ml) during the preparation for the carotid artery stenting procedure in nonoperating room environment. The error was realized immediately after the application. Besides temporary fulminant hypertensive reaction, tachycardia, restlessness, skin rush, troponin leak, and temporary ST-segment depression, there were no permanent consequences to the patient's health. The team was able to perform the planned procedure 30 min after the event. This medication error of ampule swap, packages of which were stored in the medication cupboard one above the other, was caused by alignment of the latent vulnerable layers of the safety system (Swiss Cheese Model of System Error and Hot Cheese Model) plus the influence of the environmental factors and active failures done by the anesthesia staff. After this event, new safety measures were established by introducing color-coded ISO 26825:2020 syringe labeling, new anesthesia trolleys with color-coded medication compartments, and color-coded medication storage cupboards. Besides this safety committee was formed for the promotion of medication safety education programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a methodology for the retrieval of the vertical profile of atmospheric gas pollutants in the boundary layer from ground-based remote sensing measurements. Nitrogen dioxide (N[O.sub.2]) and ozone ([O.sub.3]) slant column amounts were obtained with the differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) technique used in the multiple-axis configuration (referred to as multiaxis DOAS). The measurements were carried out in the Presidential Estate at Castel Porziano (near Rome) from September to November 2006, within a program started in 1994 fbr studying and monitoring the Estate's environment. The retrieval of information on trace gas vertical profiles from the slant column amounts requires as follows: 1) the simulation of the radiative transfer in the atmosphere for air mass factor calculation and 2) the application of inversion schemes. This paper illustrates and discusses the vertical profiles of N[O.sub.2] and [O.sub.3] obtained from multiaxis DOAS measurements and their daily evolution on October 29, 2006. Index Terms--Air mass factor (AMF), Chahine algorithm, multiple axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS), trace gas vertical profile.

The aim of the present work was the development of laser systems for ablation of biological tissues with a programmable control over the lasing pulse repetition rate in a wide range. A two-stage laser system consisting of a master oscillator and a power amplifier based on strontium vapor laser has been developed. The operation of the laser system in a single-pulse mode operation, multipulse mode operation, and with a pulse repetition rate up to 20 kHz has been technically implemented. The possibility of a bone tissue ablation with no visible thermal damage is shown.

An airborne UV-visible spectrometer, the Gas Analyzer Spectrometer Correlating Optical Differences, airborne version (GASCOD/A4[pi]) was successfully operated during the Airborne Polar Experiment, Geophysica Aircraft in Antarctica airborne campaign from Ushuaia (54[degrees]49'S, 68[degrees]18'W), Argentina in southern spring 1999. The instrument measured scattered solar radiation through three optical windows with a narrow field of view (FOV), one from the zenith, two from the horizontal, as well as actinic fluxes through 2[pi] FOV radiometric heads. Only a few airborne measurements of scattered solar radiation at different angles from the zenith are available in the literature. With our configuration we attempted to obtain the average line-of-sight concentrations of detectable trace gases. The retrieval method, based on differential optical absorption spectroscopy, is described and results for ozone are shown and compared with measurements from an in situ instrument as the first method of validation.

The aim of this research is to study the efficiency of laser removal of chlorine-containing corrosion products from three different metal surfaces: copper, brass, and steel. We use two laser sources at various operating regimes: Q-switched Nd:YAG laser generating nanosecond pulses (8 ns) at 1064 nm and 532 nm and pulse repetition rate 1 Hz; copper bromide vapor laser (CuBrVL) generating nanosecond pulses (30 ns) at 510.6 nm and pulse repetition rate 20 kHz. The cleaning is performed in dry and wet conditions. The results are evaluated through optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[SDU] Sciences of the Universe [physics] ,[SDU]Sciences of the Universe [physics] - Abstract
International audience; Launched on March 1st, 2002 on-board the polar orbiting ENVISAT satellite, the MIPAS (Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding) mid-infrared FT spectrometer performed limb emission measurements at high spectral resolution (0.025 cm-1) for about two years. Due to too frequent anomalies observed in the Interferometer Drive Unit, operations were suspended in March 2004 and finally resumed, in January 2005, in a new reduced resolution (0.01 cm-1) mode. Operational level 2 products for the complete set of target species (i.e. geo-located vertical profiles of Temperature and volume mixing ratio of H2O, O3, HNO3, CH4, N2O and NO2) were obtained during MIPAS full resolution mission, from July 6th, 2002 to March 26th, 2004. In this timeframe, several research groups involved in the ESA programme for geophysical validation of the ENVISAT Atmospheric Chemistry Instruments and in related national activities, carried out a variety of ground-based observations (ozone soundings, FT-IR, microwave radiometers, lidars) of the ozone vertical distribution and of in situ and remote sensing measurements from high altitude platforms, in close spatial and temporal coincidence with MIPAS overpasses. As a result, a comprehensive database of correlative measurements became available for a first inter-comparison of MIPAS O3 profiles with various datasets from coincident observations. A co-ordinated effort was finally conducted to bring together the individual outcomes of the different validation activities and to better exploit their redundant and complementary information. In the latter phase, special attention was paid to rigorous selection and use of correlative data, by adopting stringent coincidence criteria and by giving top priority to homogeneous and reliable validation data sources. Here we report a brief overview of the validation of MIPAS O3 data versions 4.61 and 4.62 (fully equivalent for validation purposes) by ground-based, balloon/aircraft and satellite measurements and discuss in details the resulting quality assessment of MIPAS O3 retrieved profiles.
