Efforts are made to identify the mechanism by which cell-derived cholesterol is esterified and converted to mature high-density lipoprotein (HDL) as part of reverse cholesterol transport (RCT). Cholesterol binding, esterification by lecithin/cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and transfer by cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) are measured using (super 3) H-cholesterol-labeled cell monolayers.

The psotpranial plasma levels of apolipoproteins (apo) representing chylomicrons (B-48) and very low density lipoproteins (B-100) were measured to determine the contributions of dietary and endogenous apolipoproteins to cardiovascular disease. The results showed that normal individuals both apo B-48 and apo B-100levels increased after fat feeding. These results indicate that increases in the concentration of triglyceride-rich particles containing apo B-100 and apo B-48 must be considered during evaluating the association of postprandial lipemia with atherogenic risk.
