Experiments show that perfluorochemical (PFC)-based solutions are potential blood substitutes. Fluosol, a composite of a PFC-based emulsion and two additive solutions, was studied for use as a synthetic hemoglobin substitute because of its oxygen-carrying property. Trials made on patients with acute anemia proved its safety. Furthermore, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of fluosol for intraprocedural ischemia in 1989. Fluosol is still being studied as a supplement to radiation therapy, chemotherapy and thrombolytic therapy in acute myocardial infarction.
