Abstract

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

Abstract

Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic.

7. Magnetic resonance imaging-negative myeloneuropathy and bilateral facial paresis unfurling systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune connective tissue disorder that can affect all the neuroaxes in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Myelopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus is one of the least common neuropsychiatric syndromes accounting for 1%-2% of cases. Myelopathy has long been diagnosed based on clinical findings, laboratory tests, and gold-standard gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI-negative myelopathy is a recently described subset of myelopathies. Here, we report the case of a young woman from rural West Bengal, India, who presented with overlapping features of white-matter and gray-matter myelopathy associated with peripheral neuropathy and bilateral asymmetric lower motor neuron-type facial paresis. The historical analysis yielded clues toward an etiological diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus, further substantiated by seropositivity of lupus-specific autoantibodies. Her neurological disabilities responded poorly to oral administration of hydroxychloroquine, bolus intravenous administration of methylprednisolone, and high-dose cyclophosphamide therapy but eventually responded remarkably well to cyclical rituximab therapy. This case adds to the tally of cases of MRI-negative lupus myelopathy. MRI-negative myelopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus can be easily missed if not meticulous attention is paid during clinical history taking and examinations.

Abstract

At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multinational data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar results were found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, and collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-neglible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Abstract

It is a challenging task to model the cognitive activity of the brain from electroencephalogram (EEG) data to find the learning interaction of the students in Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)-based traditional classroom. This study proposes a novel machine learning-based approach to represent the interaction in terms of EEG signal from a single channel device, and then, the research analyzes the collected data to find the novelty of mobile technology inside the classroom. The EEG signal from the student’s brain is captured, pre-processed, classified, and then analyzed to validate the learning interaction with and without mobile technology. Also, some statistical analysis such as Bayesian paired sample t-test along with some descriptive analysis was conducted to test the correctness of the objective and to support the research. Classroom is validated in terms of learning with and without BYOD-based smart devices by analyzing the attention, meditation, and other EEG states. The study investigates the use of smart technologies inside the traditional classroom by using single channel EEG device. Later, the study recommends the use of mobile technology inside the classroom for the betterment of quality education.

Abstract

Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors that associated with people reported adopting public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract

Today, mobile devices are cheap, affordable and are a part of our day to day life. It has paved its way into learning inside and outside the class. These devices have become a part of our body; it is with us $\mathbf{24\ x\ 7}$ . These smart devices provide us with learning beyond the classroom and textbooks. It has not only enhanced teacher-student interaction but has also solved many classroom related issues. With the advent of mobile devices MOOCs, m-learning, e-learning have grown exponentially in last few years. These pervasive devices are not only used for communication, but also for teaching, learning and development purpose. In this work we try to find the modalities which will be regulated by systematic inclusion of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) based classroom interaction. The system used task technology fit (TTF) model to find if this technology is fit for the educational aid. This study includes survey to find the cognitive behaviour of students towards mobile devices including laptop, tablet, and smart phones. The parametric data collected over survey have been analysed for finding out the variation in treatment group and control group using Bayesian paired sample t-test, which clearly shows the effective use of BYOD based interaction in classroom for enhancing teaching learning process.

Abstract

Real world problems are full of uncertainty. Probability theory can deal with uncertainty up to a certain limit. After Newtonian mechanics, physicists along with mathematicians were trying to formulate a wide variety of theories of probability. Today also there exist relative frequency theory and the personalistic or subjectivist theory which are among the most popular ones but probability theory demands equally likely and mutually exclusive outcomes as well. Actual real world problems like optimization of laser drilling time of circuit boards, cannot be solved by the theories of probability though having uncertainty. Uncertainty is in another way just the inverse of information we have about any system. The more complex a system becomes, the less certain we can be in proper analysis of that system, its formulation and solution. Imprecise human reasoning forms the basis of our initial understanding of most physical processes but computers should be provided with precise and quantified quantities of information. The efficacy of fuzzy logic can be judged in this criterion. This context is for analyzing and ascertaining the optimality of using fuzzy logic along with genetic algorithm, while minimizing the laser drilling time of circuit boards.

13. Losers Buy Beta

Abstract

Using trading data from Finland and the US, I empirically show that investors tend to buy riskier stocks following realized losses. The measure of risk that the investors seem to pay attention to is the market beta of a stock. This behavior of buying higher beta stocks after a realized loss is observed in institutional as well as individual investors, but is more pronounced among individual investors with lower expertise, who on an average buy a new stock with up to 15% higher beta than that of the old stock they were holding. For an agent with utility consistent with prospect theory, this behavior emerges as the optimal response to her problem of maximizing utility within a mental account. Furthermore, this behavior can aggregate up during market downturns and cause return predictability in high beta stocks. With this insight, I suggest a modification to the betting against beta trading strategy that can improve the Sharpe ratio more than twofold.

Abstract

This paper presents a modification to the testable Euler equation in the form of an adjustment term due to additive measurement error in consumption data. The error in consumption data has the potential to magnify the equity premium puzzle in a CRRA framework and including the adjustment term leads to a reduction in the estimated risk aversion coefficient. The paper also empirically estimates a ballpark figure for the variance of measurement error and demonstrates a significant resolution of the puzzle by including measurement error in the model.

Abstract

An interrogation technique for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is devised with customized in-line edge filtering single-multi-single mode fiber (SMS) component and optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR). The performance of the proposed SMS-OTDR interrogation is established by temperature and strain sensing analysis of a standard FBG. The temperature and strain sensitivity values which are verified by theoretical analysis are estimated as 1.01 × 10−2 dB/℃ and 3.9 × 10−4 dB/µɛ respectively. Furthermore, we have optimized and achieved controlled etching on FBG and tested it for hiking the sensitivity. Using the etched FBG, an enhanced temperature and strain sensitivity of 6.7 × 10−2 dB/℃ and 3.2 × 10−3 dB/µɛ covering the range of 20–200 °C and 100–2015 µɛ respectively are also recorded and analysed by this integration method. Eventually, the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the proposed method are compared with various reported techniques and presented here.
